|生化机理||Lithium carbonate has been used in psychiatry since the 1950’s to treat mania and depressive disorders. It is an element with a positive charge similar to sodium and potassium. In cells, lithium interferes with other positively charged atoms important to many cellular functions. It interferes with neurotransmitter production and uptake. Current biological studies are looking into lithium treatment for additional CNS disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.|

Lithium Treatment Moderate-Dose Use Study (LiTMUS) for Bipolar Disorder: A Randomized Comparative Effectiveness Trial of Optimized Personalized Treatment With and Without Lithium.
OBJECTIVE Lithium salts, once the mainstay of therapy for bipolar disorder, have tolerability issues at a higher dosage that often limit adherence. The authors investigated the comparative effectivene...Read More
Acute antidepressive efficacy of lithium monotherapy, not citalopram, depends on recurrent course of depression.
Studies of the 1970s and 1980s showed lithium monotherapy to be an effective treatment of acute unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) and hence as a potential alternative to monoaminergic antidepre...Read More
Emotional regulation, dissociation, and the self-induced dermatoses: clinical features and implications for treatment with mood stabilizers.
The self-induced dermatoses (such as trichotillomania, pathologic skin picking or neurotic excoriations, dermatitis artefacta, onychophagia and onychotillomania), which are caused as a result of exces...Read More
Adjunctive oral ziprasidone in patients with acute mania treated with lithium or divalproex, part 2: influence of protocol-specific eligibility criteria on signal detection.
High failure rates of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are well recognized but poorly understood. We report exploratory analyses from an adjunctive ziprasidone double-blind RCT in adults with bipol...Read More
In 1963 it was first demonstrated that long-term lithium administration exerts a "mood-stabilising" effect, preventing recurrences of mania and depression in bipolar affective disorder. Desp...Read More

Antipsychotic drugs, mood stabilizers, and risk of pneumonia in bipolar disorder: a nationwide case-control study.
Like mood stabilizers, most second-generation antipsychotics are widely used to treat patients with bipolar disorder, yet their safety is still a concern. This study explored the association between a...Read More
A simple question answered: adding moderate-dosage lithium does not help patients with bipolar disorder.
