Rapid synthesis of sea urchin-like Ni(OH)2@Ni(Fe)OOH electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Fang Wu,Yuhong Jiao,Jinlong Ge,Yujun Zhu,chao feng,Zhong Wu,Chang-Peng Lv

Exploring highly active, low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance but still a major challenge. Here, we synthesized Ni(OH)2@Ni(Fe)OOH with a sea urchin structure on nickel foam via a simple hydrothermal and subsequent soaking process. Experimental results indicate that incorporation of Fe into Ni(OH)2 is favorable for modulate the electronic structure, faster electron transfer and improved intrinsic activity, thereby leading to excellent OER activity. The optimized Ni(OH)2@Ni(Fe)OOH exhibits superior OER activity with overpotentials of 245 and 310 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, and a small Tafel slope of 40.7 mV dec-1, and along with high stability over 100 h, which is more active than benchmark RuO2 and sever control samples without introduction of Fe. More importantly, the overall water splitting system by using Ni(OH)2@Ni(Fe)OOH-100 as anode and Pt/C as the cathode only requires a cell voltage of 1.54 V to afford 10 mA cm-2. This work not only demonstrate the key factor of Fe doping, but also offers a new path for the development of NiFe-based OER catalysts.

Ultrafast and Facile Synthesis of (Ni/Fe/Mo)OOH on Ni Foam for Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Seawater Electrolysis

Li Xu,Yuxuan Dong,Wei Xu,Wen Zhang

Preparing high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER)s with high durability for seawater electrolysis is of great significance. Herein, reported a one-step solution-immersion synthesis strategy to prepare a (Ni/Fe/Mo)OOH catalyst on a nickel foam substrate that can be accomplished in 5 min under ambient temperature and pressure. The unique cluster morphology of the catalyst on the surface of electrodes effectively increases the number of active sites, and the presence of Mo, Ni, and Fe in the catalyst enhances the activity of the OER. In the electrolyte solution (1 mol/L NaOH), the electrode exhibited low OER overpotentials of 265 mV, 286 mV, and 332 mV at currents of 100 mA·cm−2, 400 mA·cm−2, and 1000 mA·cm−2, respectively. This electrode also demonstrated excellent performance in seawater splitting, and the overpotentials at currents of 100 mA·cm−2, 400 mA·cm−2, and 1000 mA·cm−2in alkaline seawater environments were 330 mV, 416 mV, and 514 mV, respectively. In the 72 h durability test, the voltage increase was within 10 mV, exhibiting the excellent durability of the (Ni/Fe/Mo)OOH electrocatalyst. Therefore, the electrode developed here shows potential in the application of seawater electrolysis for hydrogen generation. Keywords:oxygen evolution reaction;(Ni/Fe/Mo)OOH catalyst;ultrafast and facile synthesis;alkaline seawater electrolysis

Catalytic peroxone process for low-temperature denitration with enhanced Ti-OOH formation on P-TiO2: Experimental, DFT, and semi-in-situ UV–vis studies

Mingjia Zhang,Shule Zhang,Fanyu Meng,Mengjie Hu,Zhongyu Wang,Yiqing Zeng,Qin Zhong

Promoting the formation of Ti-OOH in the TiO 2 -based-catalyst/H 2 O 2 /O 3 system is critical to further develop the catalytic peroxone process for low-temperature flue gas denitration. In this study, a series of phosphorus-doped TiO 2 with rich Lewis acid sites and high stability was designed and established, achieving 94 % NO oxidation efficiency with less oxidant (373 K, H 2 O 2 /NO = 1.2, O 3 /NO = 0.5) and high GHSV (1.2 × 10 5 h −1 ). Combining characterizations and DFT results, a possible mechanism was proposed: phosphorus-doping enhanced the Lewis acidity, which was conducive to the adsorption and activation of H 2 O 2 . Moreover, P-TiO 2 significantly promoted the H 2 O dissociation and Ti-OOH formation process by reducing the energy barrier, thereby promoting the synergistic effect between O 3 and Ti-OOH. The semi-in-situ UV–vis DRS demonstrated that the catalytic peroxone process occurs at the solid–liquid interface and the Ti-OOH is consumed in the catalytic process. We hope this work provide a new investigation method and insight into the catalyst design.

Tuning the Formation Kinetics of *OOH Intermediate with Hollow Bowl-Like Carbon by Pulsed Electroreduction for Enhanced H2O2 Production

Ruoxuan Sun,Minghui Zhu,Jie Chen,Lei Yan,Liyi Bai,Jiqiang Ning,Yijun Zhong,Yong Hu

The electrochemical synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e– ORR) is a promising alternative to the conventional anthraquinone method. However, due to local alkalinization near the catalyst surface, the restricted oxygen replenishment and insufficient activated water molecule supply limit the formation of the key *OOH intermediate. Herein, a pulsed electrocatalysis approach based on a structurally optimized S/N/O tridoped hollow carbon bowl catalyst has been proposed to overcome this challenge. In an H-type electrolytic cell, the pulsed method achieves a superior H2O2 yield rate of 55.6 mg h–1 mgcat.–1, approximately 1.6 times higher than the conventional potentiostatic method (34.2 mg h–1 mgcat.–1), while maintaining the Faradaic efficiency above 94.6%. In situ characterizations, finite element simulations, and density functional theory analyses unveil that the application of pulsed potentials mitigates the local OH– concentration, enhances the water activation and proton generation, and facilitates oxygen production within the hollow bowl-like carbon structure. These effects synergistically accelerate the formation kinetics of the *OOH intermediate by the efficient generation of *O2 and *H2O intermediates, leading to superior H2O2 yields. This work develops a strategy to tune catalytic environments for diverse catalytic applications.

α-(Fe, Cu)OOH/RGO nanocomposites for heterogeneous photo-Fenton-like degradation of ciprofloxacin under visible light irradiation

Xu Junge,Hu Die,Wang Yingmu,Zhang Ziwei

Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is a third-generation fluoroquinolones (FQs) antibiotic, and the occurrence of CIP in the water environment has raised growing concerns owning to its environmental toxicity. In this paper, a novel α-(Fe, Cu)OOH/RGO nanocomposite was synthesized via a one-step reflux method for CIP degradation through a photo-Fenton-like process. When the RGO content was 1 wt%, CIP degradation ratio by the α-(Fe, Cu)OOH/RGO nanocomposite reached 100% under visible light irradiation within 120 min, and total organic carbon (TOC) removal ratio reached 60% within 180 min. The result of molecular fluorescence spectra highlighted that the loading of RGO on the α-(Fe, Cu)OOH significantly increased the content of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton-like system and simultaneously inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electron and hole, which played critical roles in the enhancement of CIP degradation. In addition, 11 main intermediates were identified as the degradation products of CIP in the α-(Fe, Cu)OOH/RGO/H 2 O 2 /visible light reaction systems using liquid chromatograph–mass spectrometer (LC-MS) analyses. The results demonstrated that three degradation pathways for CIP removal by α-(Fe, Cu)OOH/RGO nanocomposite occurred, including (i) oxidation on the piperazine ring and dealkylation, (ii) defluorination and decarboxylation, and (iii) hydroxylation on the quinolone ring. This work would provide a novel insight of CIP degradation pathways in photo-Fenton-like processes. Graphical abstract

Simultaneous voltammetric determination of epinephrine and acetaminophen using a highly sensitive CoAl-OOH/reduced graphene oxide sensor in pharmaceutical samples and biological fluids

Chengke Wu,Jing Li,Xiaoya Liu,Huijie Zhang,Ruifeng Li,Gongke Wang,Zhenhui Wang,Quanmin Li,Enbo Shangguan

For this study, three novel types of sensors comprised of CoAl-layered double oxyhydroxide (CoAl-LDH), CoAl-LDH/reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and CoAl-OOH/rGO nanosheets were successfully fabricated on glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) and employed for the electrochemical detection of epinephrine (EP) and acetaminophen (AC). Interestingly, we found that the CoAl-OOH/rGO/GCE was more suitable for the determination of EP and AC in contrast to the CoAl-LDH and CoAl-OOH/rGO sensors. Differential pulse voltammetry results revealed that the CoAl-OOH/rGO/GCE delivered excellent electrocatalytic activity. The sensitivities and detection limits for the simultaneous measurement of EP and AC were 12.2 μA μM −1  cm −2 , 0.023 μM L −1 , and 4.87 μA μM −1  cm −2 , 0.058 μM L −1 , respectively. Especially, the as-obtained CoAl-OOH/rGO/GCE was successfully utilized for the detection in pharmaceutical samples and biological fluids with satisfactory results. Owing to its outstanding electrocatalytic activity and superior sensitivity, the CoAl-OOH/rGO/GCE could be beneficial to construct a promising electrochemical sensor for the detection of EP and AC.

A new type of SnO2@β-Fe(Zr)OOH hollow nanosphere as a bifunctional adsorbent for removing nitrate from water: kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies

Weng Mingmei,Zhu Qi,Wang Aiwen,Liu Guanjin,Huang Honghao

Abstract A SnO 2 @β-Fe(Zr)OOH nanocomposite, β-FeOOH doped with Zr on SnO 2 hollow spheres, was synthesized by two-step hydrothermal method to solve the problem of nitrate pollution in sewage. The structure and properties of samples which synthesized in this work were analyzed by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, BET and Zeta potential systematically. Moreover, the effects of initial nitrate concentration, pH, time and temperature on nitrate removal were also investigated. The amount of nitrate nitrogen adsorbed by the SnO 2 @β-Fe(Zr)OOH nanocomposite was 14.0 mg/g in the first 30 min. Based on the analysis of the nitrate adsorption kinetic model of SnO 2 @β-Fe(Zr)OOH nanocomposite in water, the adsorption was in line with the second-order kinetic model and belonged to chemical adsorption. It showed that the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model fitting results are superior to the Freundlich isothermal adsorption model through fitting the adsorption isotherm. With the increase of temperature, the maximum adsorption capacity showed the same trend, which indicated that the adsorption process is an endothermic process. In addition, adsorption thermodynamic studies were carried out to prove that the reaction process is a spontaneous reaction. After six adsorption–desorption cycles, the composite still has an adsorption capacity of 80%. Graphic abstract

Tailoring *OOH Adsorption Microenvironment for Efficient Hydrogen Peroxide Electrosynthesis

Zhuqing Chen,Yijiang Ge,Guihua Liu,Xiaoxiang Wang,Xiaohang Du

Electrosynthesis of H2O2 through the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e– ORR) is limited by the trade-off between catalytic activity and H2O2 selectivity. We overcome this by constructing a CeO2-anchored nitrogen–oxygen codoped carbon nanotube hybrid (CeO2/NOCNT) to tailor the *OOH adsorption microenvironment. Operando infrared spectroscopy captures the strongest *OOH absorption and equilibrated *OOH/*HOOH coadsorption on CeO2/NOCNT, signaling dominant 2e– kinetics. Density functional theory uncovers interfacial electron transfer from CeO2 to neighboring carbon atoms, shifting *OOH binding energy toward the volcanic apex and reducing the kinetic barrier. The CeO2/NOCNT catalyst achieves a H2O2 production rate of 6.69 mol gcat–1 h–1 with 82.9% Faradaic efficiency (FE) and retains performance over 110 h in a flow reactor. Integrating cathodic 2e– ORR with anodic methanol oxidation yields formate (95.6% FE) and H2O2 (84.2% FE) while reducing cell voltage. This interfacial engineering approach provides a scalable route to selective H2O2 generation and coupled production of chemical feedstocks.

Surface oxygen coverage-mediated *OOH modulation enables highly selective H2O2 electrosynthesis

Jinchao Xu,Wanying Wang,Yuang Shi,Huan Li,Tengyao Sun,Xiang Wan,Chunning Zhao,Ruiting Hao,Weichao Wang

The electrochemical synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) suffers from low selectivity toward the 2e − oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway over the competing 4e − pathway. The key to this selectivity lies in precisely controlling the adsorption strength of the critical intermediate *OOH. In this work, we address this challenge through a local micro-environment engineering approach that modulates the surface coverage of active oxygen species (*O) to optimize *OOH adsorption behavior through cobalt-doped zinc oxide catalyst post-treated by ozone (Co-ZnO-O 3 ). The incorporation of Co improves the ratio of oxygen vacancies and enhances the concentration of *O from 28.1 % in pristine ZnO to 39.4 %, and then ozone treatment further increases the surface *O concentration to 52.6 %. The regulatory mechanism via ozone activation on the *O concentration of ZnO and Co-ZnO and further demonstrate that high *O concentration is more favorable for the 2e − ORR. As a result, Co-ZnO-O 3 achieves a remarkable H 2 O 2 selectivity of up to 96 % due to the moderate *OOH adsorption determined optimized by Co-doping and ozone activation. A flow-cell electrolyzer equipped with Co-ZnO-O 3 can deliver an industrial-scale current density of over 300 mA cm −2 at 0.2 V and a record-high H 2 O 2 yield rate of 58.56 mol g −1  h −1 , maintaining a Faradaic efficiency of over 90 % for 50 h. Furthermore, its practical applicability is demonstrated in the degradation of organic pollutants, such as methylene blue and rhodamine B, highlighting its potential application in various fields.

Catalytic cross-coupling of aniline by pyrite and dissolved oxygen under alkaline conditions

Yi-Ying Lin,Bao-Dong Song,Xiang-Ming Wang,Cong-Cong Zhang,Xiao-Cong Zhang,Shi-Wei Sun,Song-Hai Wu,Hai-Tao Ren,Shao-Yi Jia,Yong Liu,Xu Han

Pyrite catalyzes oxidation of various organic contaminants by dissolved oxygen (DO) under acidic conditions; however, the catalytic mechanism under alkaline conditions is still not clear. In this study, we observe increased oxidation rates of aniline with increasing pHs (7.0–11.0). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching experiments rule out contributions of •OH, O 2 •− , 1 O 2 and Fe (IV) to aniline oxidation and suggest that the Fe (III)–OOH peroxo and/or H 2 O 2 are the primary oxidative species in the oxidation of aniline at pH 11.0. In addition, 200 mg L −1 H 2 O 2 does not apparently increase the oxidation rate of aniline, which also rules out the predominant contribution of the produced H 2 O 2 to aniline oxidation. We therefore suggest that the Fe (III)–OOH peroxo is indeed the primary oxidative species in the pyrite–DO system under alkaline conditions. Analyses of solid total organic carbon (TOC), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy further reveal that more than 83.3% aniline has been polymerized to polyaniline, instead of being mineralized into CO 2 and H 2 O, indicating that H-abstraction from aniline by the Fe (III)–OOH peroxo is an important step in the oxidation of aniline under alkaline conditions. This study provides new insight into the oxidative species in the pyrite–DO system, and opens a new door for organic degradations under alkaline conditions.

Unveiling Role of Sulfate Ion in Nickel-Iron (oxy)Hydroxide with Enhanced Oxygen-Evolving Performance

Hanxiao Liao,Tao Luo,Pengfei Tan,Kejun Chen,Lili Lu,Yong Liu,Min Liu,Jun Pan

The rational design of effective catalysts for sluggish oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) is desired but challenging. Nickel-iron (NiFe) (oxy)hydroxides are promising pre-electrocatalysts for alkaline OER. However, OER performances are limited by the slow reconstruction process to generate active species of high-valance NiFe oxyhydroxides. In this work, a sulfate ion (SO 4 2− ) modulated strategy is developed to boost the OER activity of NiFe (oxy)hydroxide by accelerating the electrochemical reconstruction of pre-catalyst and stabilizing the reaction intermediate of OOH* during OER. The SO 4 2− decorated NiFe (oxy)hydroxide catalyst (NF-S0.15) is fabricated via scalable anodization of NiFe foam in a thiourea-dissolved electrolyte. The experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate the dual effect of SO 4 2− on improving OER performances. SO 4 2− leaching is favorable for the electrochemical reconstruction to form active NiFeOOH under OER condition. Simultaneously, the residual SO 4 2− adsorbed on surface can stabilize the intermediate of OOH*, and thus enhance the OER performances. As expected, NF-S0.15 delivers an ultralow overpotential of 234 mV to reach the current density of 50 mA cm −2 , a fast OER kinetics (27.7 mV dec −1 ), and a high stability for more than 100 h. This unique insights into anionic modification could inspire the development of advanced electrocatalysts for efficient OER.

Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity Steering OH-to-OOH Conversion for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Zhiang Hou,Rui Hu,Yitong Chen,Jinnan Wang,Aimin Li

The spin state of oxygen intermediates constitutes a fundamental limitation to the four-electron oxygen evolution reaction (OER), impeding efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting. Herein, guided by the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect, we design a chiral L-Co (3−x) Ni x O 4 /BiVO 4 photoanode that employs a chiral co-catalyst layer to accelerate the evolution of oxidative intermediates. Kinetic isotope experiments, in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that aligning the spin states of charge carriers via chiral molecules facilitates the rapid conversion of * OH to * OOH. Meanwhile, this process effectively suppresses the formation of hydrogen peroxide (Faradaic efficiency < 10%) and improves photoanode stability. Consequently, the L-Co (3−x) Ni x O 4 /BiVO 4 photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 5.41 mA·cm −2 at a potential of 1.23 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode, and maintains stable operation for over 100 h at the working voltage. This work unravels the underlying mechanism by which the CISS effect governs the OER pathway and mediates the formation of key reaction intermediates and provides a viable spin-engineering route to efficient and stable photoanodes.
