The potential for essential oils (EOs) to act as a natural alternative for controlling mosquito populations has aroused extensive interest in recent years. Four EOs ( Thymus vulgaris (thyme), Foeniculum vulgare (fennel), Citrus medica (lime), and Camellia sinensis (green tea)) were selected in our previous larvicidal screening assays against Aedes albopictus . In this study, the active constituents of each EO were identified. Next, their acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity was evaluated, and the binding mode was studied by molecular docking. To improve EO stability and duration of activity, nanoemulsions were prepared and characterized. Thirteen constituents of the four EOs at the 100 ppm level led to 100% mortality of the larvae, the four most active constituents being α -hexyl cinnamaldehyde (LC 50 = 24.0 ± 0.3 ppm), limonene (LC 50 = 34.1 ± 0.7 ppm), α -terpinene (LC 50 = 50.0 ± 0.5 ppm), and carvacrol (LC 50 = 54.7 ± 0.6 ppm). These compounds, with the exception of α -hexyl cinnamaldehyde, also showed potent AChE inhibitory activity. Nanoemulsions with droplet size of 56.8–224.9 nm were prepared by emulsification at a 1:1 (v/v) ratio of EO and Tween 80. These EO nanoemulsions showed equally potent larvicidal activity as EOs themselves; moreover, they showed better stability and were active for longer time. These results suggest that natural EOs and their constituents have potential as larvicides for mosquito vector control and that nanoemulsification is an effective method for improving their physicochemical properties and efficacy.

Aroma is a comprehensive sensory effect formed by the complex interaction of various volatile molecules, but there is still lack of effective methods for revealing the interactions of aroma compounds. In this study, totally 24 aroma-active compounds were identified from essential oils of Magnolia biondii , and were classified into spicy/woody and floral/fruity groups. Cluster analysis of molecular docking energies suggested the presence of distinct binding patterns. Ten key aroma compounds were identified through ROAV analysis and omission tests. Sensory interaction analyses indicated that the cross-category combinations exhibited mainly additive (50%) or masking effects (45.8%), and only β-pinene and linalool showed strong synergistic effect. It was found that structural complementarity was highly associated with interaction effects, and spicy/woody and floral/fruity compounds tended to bind to the TM3-TM5-TM6 and TM2-TM3 regions of OR1A1, respectively. A novel proposed method, binding energy ratio (RBE), was established to predict sensory interactions from dual-ligand docking data. Controlling secondary building units (SBUs) in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) provides a powerful strategy for tuning their photophysical properties and enhancing photocatalytic performances, particularly in singlet oxygen-mediated reactions. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of lanthanide–porphyrin frameworks (QPF-3, QPF-4, and QPF-5) via a modulator-induced approach, yielding diverse SBUs that range from dinuclear cluster to a one-dimensional rod SBU. Among these, QPF-5(Yb) with rod SBU exhibits the highest 1O2 generation efficiency and remarkably improved photocatalytic activity in oxidizing 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene to juglone, achieving up to a 6.1-fold increase compared with QPF-4(Yb). Spectroscopic and electrochemical analyses reveal that this superior performance arises from synergistic effects between the Ln-SBUs and porphyrin ligands, which collectively facilitate improved visible-light conversion efficiency and enhanced 1O2 generation efficiency. This work underscores the significance of modulator selection in achieving specific structural features and optimizing photocatalytic performance in Ln–porphyrin MOFs. The insights gained here contribute to the broader design principles for creating advanced photocatalytic systems capable of efficient reactive oxygen species production and selective oxidative transformations.

A combined dispersed liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) and chromatography (GC) method was developed for the determination of 24 aromatic substances in rosemary hydrosol in this work. The pretreatment method of DLLME was optimized by carefully selecting the appropriate extraction agents, dispersants, and their respective amounts. With carbon tetrachloride as the extractant and acetone as the dispersant, the enrichment factor of DLLME is 13.3, and the 24 target substances such as eucalyptol, camphor and verbenone can be separated within 31 min and quantified by an external standard method using gas chromatography (GC). The correlation coefficient r2of the linear regression equation is within the range of 0.9983 to 0.9991. The detection limit of the method was 0.02 mg/L, the recovery rate of the spiked solution was 76.4–118.4%, the relative standard deviation was 0.4–6.9% and the method was used to detect the semi-finished products of rosemary hydrosol and the finished rosemary hydrosol sold on the market. This method also provides a reference for the qualitative and quantitative determination of aromatic substances in other hydrosols.

Qianghuo (the rhizomes and radixes of Notopterygium incisum Ting ex H.T. chang) is a traditional Chinese medicine, and widely used as an anti-inflammatory, anodyne, antifebrile agent. Qianghuo volatile oil also exhibits the same properties, and the effects are probably related to the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX), but its bioactive components are not clear yet. To figure out the bioactive components of Qianghuo volatile oil target to cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), a ligand fishing method using immobilized COX-2 magnetic beads (COX-2-MB S ) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) were developed to identify the compounds that act on COX-2. Nine ligands, including 3-carene, β-caryophyllene, eucalyptol, α-terpinene, Limonene, δ-terpinene, α-pinene, β-pinene and γ-terpinene, were specifically captured by COX-2-MB S . Among them, 3-carene, β-caryophyllene, and eucalyptol in Qianghuo volatile oil were isolated and confirmed by in vitro inhibition and in vivo anti-inflammatory activity assays as selective inhibitor against COX-2. The IC 50 values were 13.5, 10.1, and 7.6 μM, respectively. Compared with the model, 3-carene, β-caryophyllene, and eucalyptol considerably reduced ear swelling and paw edema. Moreover, 3-carene and eucalyptol significantly decreased the changes of COX-2 expression in RAW264.7 cells activated by LPS. Our study validated that the developed ligand-fishing method using COX-2-MBs coupled with GC–MS can be applied to recognize COX-2 inhibitors in Qianghuo volatile oil. In vitro/vivo assay showed 3-carene and eucalyptol in Qianghuo volatile oil had strong inhibition against COX-2. This study may provide novel methods for discovering active components for volatile oil–based drug development or aromatherapy.

Platycladus orientalis plants in China are experiencing a serious problem with wood-boring beetles, but conventional physical detection methods cannot perform well due to hidden larvae and less obvious symptoms in the early infestation. In this study, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of P. orientalis were investigated using gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) to identify its internal infestation. An image-based evaluation method of the degree of internal wood damage was proposed, the principal component analysis (PCA) based on specific markers was applied for natural clustering of samples, and unsupervised learning approaches based on specific markers and automatically located peaks were used to create predictive models for sample classification. The results showed that the herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) of P. orientalis samples had two main characteristics compared with undamaged plants. One was the emergence of several compounds such as C 3 -C 6 ketones, aldehydes, and alcohols, while the other was the obvious content variation of several monoterpenes and their derivatives. The classification models based on specific markers and automatically located peaks could correctly classify at least 89.5% and 87.9% of the samples, respectively. In a word, these results proved that GC-IMS based approaches combined with different feature extraction methods have the potential to identify the internal infestation of wood-boring beetles in P. orientalis .

The step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction shows the merits of controlling the directional transfer of photogenerated charge carriers and realizing a strong redox potential for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and carbon dioxide reduction. In this paper, a zero/two-dimensional (0D/2D) S-scheme heterojunction composed of cadmium selenide quantum dots and covalent triazine frameworks (CdSe/CTF) is designed and fabricated by an electrostatic self-assembly approach. Compared with pristine CTF and CdSe quantum dots, the photocatalytic activities of CdSe/CTF composites for hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction and terpene oxidation are significantly enhanced. The hydrogen evolution rate of CdSe/CTF hybrid photocatalyst immobilized with platinum nanoparticles as cocatalyst reached 19.0 mmol g −1 h −1 under visible-light irradiation, and the apparent quantum yield is 9.8 % at 420 nm. The CdSe/CTF hybrid also exhibited more superior photocatalytic activity in carbon dioxide reduction with a carbon monoxide evolution rate of 1.48 mmol g −1 h −1 , and presented higher photocatalytic reactivity in the selective oxidation of α -terpinene to p -cymene. The remarkable enhancement of photocatalytic performance for CdSe/CTF composite is mainly attributed to the facilitated separation and transfer of photoexcited charge carriers of 0D/2D S-scheme heterojunction. This work provides an in-depth insight of utilizing semiconducting polymers as a suitable platform to sustainably transform inexhaustive solar energy to storable chemical energy.

1,8-Cineole has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and physiological properties and its high purity is important to application. However, 1,8-cineole usually mixes with monoterpene hydrocarbons in plant essential oils and they are difficult to separate via distillation due to their close boiling points. In this study, a series of lactic acid (LA) based deep eutectic solvents (LaDESs) were formed and used in liquid–liquid separation of 1,8-cineole and monoterpene hydrocarbons. LaDES formed by LA and tyrosine (Tyr) showed 24.8 selectivity of 1,8-cineole to γ-terpinene at 25 ℃. Synergists or auxiliary extractant such as tert -butanol can improve the distribution coefficient but reduce the selectivity. Some effect factors to the extraction were investigated and 99% purity of 1,8-cineole was achieved in the final product. The extraction thermodynamic parameters and kinetic process were studied. The re-extraction and the LaDES recovery were carried out satisfactorily. It further proved that the separation of 1,8-cineole from α-pinene, α-terpinene and ρ-cymene could be performed well with the LaDES respectively. Liquid-liquid extraction separation of 1,8-cineole and γ-terpinene has the advantages of low energy consumption, high selectivity and safety. It would provide an alternative strategy for separating 1,8-cineole and monoterpene hydrocarbons whose boiling points are close.

Platycladus orientalis (L.) is a typical urban greening tree in Asia, but the young leaves of P. orientalis are vulnerable to pathogenic fungi with hidden early signs. In this study, we investigated the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions of the Alternaria alternate infected P. orientalis plants, for the first time, using the gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) combined with chemometric approaches. Results showed that the A. alternate infection could reduce the VOCs release of P. orientalis leaves. The α-pinene and β-pinene emissions were down to 70% and 55% of controls on day 10, respectively. The destructive inoculated plants responded more to the A. alternate , both in the VOCs emissions and the fungal growth. The (Z)-3-hexenol, n-hexanol, α-pinene, and β-pinene can serve as potential markers for infection discrimination, and their IMS signal intensities were calibrated with corresponding volume concentrations ranging from 0 to 250 μg/L. The PLS-DA model based on GC-IMS fingerprints can correctly classify at least 83% of samples in infection durations after fungal inoculation for the first 10 days. The PLSR model can predict the fungal colony counts in the P. orientalis needles (R c 2 >0.97 and R p 2 >0.92) with good robustness, whose RMSEP was lower than 0.68 (×10 6 CFU g −1 ) in predict set. In a word, the GC-IMS-based approach had the potential to evaluate A. alternate infection in P. orientalis , and the variation of potential markers can provide reference to its fungal infection monitor with millisecond response in the forest.

To reflect the volatile differences of dried citrus peel as affected by cultivars and drying methods, the volatile compounds of dried citrus peel of two cultivars (Citrus reticulata“Chachi” andCitrus reticulata“Ponkan”), prepared under three drying methods (sun-drying (SD), hot-air-drying (AD), and freeze-drying (FD)), were analyzed by GC-MS, odor activity values (OAVs), and GC-IMS. GC-MS data indicated that SD was favorable to preserve terpenic alcohols (linalool, α-terpineol and terpinene-4-ol), β-cymene, methyl methanthranilate, and monoterpenes; while AD was favorable to preserve aliphatic aldehydes and sesquiterpenes; and SD was more similar with AD in GC-MS analysis of volatile profile (of higher MW) for both cultivars from the PCA outcome. Furthermore, significant difference in volatile isomeric composition of different samples was also clearly demonstrated through extracted ion chromatogram (EIC) by GC-MS analysis. GC-IMS analysis showed the favorability of FD to preserve ketones, phenols, esters, and aromatic aldehydes; and SD was more similar with FD in GC-IMS analysis of volatile profile (of smaller MW) for both cultivars from the PCA outcome. Moreover, the OAVs indicate that 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol contributed much to the flavor of dried Ponkan peel, while 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, methyl methanthranilate, and methyl anthranilate played an important role in the flavor of dried Chachi peel; and the highest OAVs for monoterpenes were observed at SD for both cultivars. Thus, the combination of GC-MS and GC-IMS analyses with PCA in this paper suggested the superiority of SD to preserve volatiles and characteristic aroma in dried citrus peel, and that SD contributed much to the quality of dried Chachi peel. Keywords:citrus peel;volatile compounds;sun-drying (SD);hot-air-drying (AD);freeze-drying (FD);GC-MS;GC-IMS

Accurate, stable, and reproducible photocatalytic reaction systems remain a major challenge when performing photocatalytic mechanism studies. In this paper, we designed and built a standard photocatalytic reactor to realize the precise adjustment of each parameter related to the photoreaction to meet the demand for the accurate study of photochemical reaction mechanisms and can realize the personalized settings for different photochemical reactions. Based on this standard reactor, the influence of each independent parameter on the conversion rate of the reaction was studied based on the model reaction of 9,10-diphenylanthracene oxidation, and a mathematical model of the coupling influence of multiple factors to the photochemical reaction was obtained using the dimensionless data processing method. The mathematical model can help to carry out the coordinated selection of various parameters of photochemical reactions, reduce the reaction cost, and improve the reaction efficiency. Furthermore, we demonstrate the simplicity and accuracy of this reactor in measuring and calculating the quantum efficiency of photochemical reactions. This work is of great guidance to exploring the basic principles of photochemical reactions, the selection of reaction parameters, and the construction of photochemical reactors.
