In this work, a series of h -BN/ α -SnWO 4 (BN/SW) nanocomposites with different h -BN concentrations (0.3–1.0 wt%) were prepared through a hydrothermal method. The composition, structure and morphology of BN/SW nanocomposites were systematically investigated. The formation of BN/SW heterojunction was evidenced by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The BN/SW composites showed plate-to-plate structure consisting α -SnWO 4 and h -BN nanoplates. The optical and photoelectrochemical studies revealed that the decorating of h -BN can significantly facilitate the separation of the photo-created charge carries due to the formation of heterostructure. As a result, BN/SW hetero-structure exhibited the superior photocatalytic performance under visible light, which was confirmed by the photo-degradation of methyl orange (MO) and tetracycline (TC). Especially, the BN/SW-0.5 sample has the best rate constant of 0.0323 min −1 , which is 4.6 times larger than that of α -SnWO 4 . Based on trapping experiment, the h + radical was identified as the dominant reactive species, and ·O 2 − and ·OH also made contribution to the photocatalysis. In addition, the photocatalytic enhancement mechanism of BN/SW heterojunction was proposed. This study shed light on the roles of h -BN in the design of photocatalysts with high-performance.

Oxide-based photoelectrodes for solar water splitting have gained growing attention because of their decent stability and cost-effectiveness. Particularly, α-SnWO 4 has been regarded as a potential next-generation light absorbing material due to the predicted favorable bandgap of 1.9 eV. Herein, the investigation and amelioration of the crystallinity as a performance dominating factor to the α-SnWO 4 -based photoanode are demonstrated. The improvement is attributed to a unique crystallization process induced by the formation of oxygen vacancies in the reductive atmosphere at 500 °C. The sample exhibits notably enhanced visible-light absorption and an improved charge transport property. Electrochemical measurements reveal a cathodic shift of the flat-band potential, corresponding to the impacted band position. The photocurrent is enhanced from 0.03 to 0.42 mA cm −2 (AM1.5, 1.23 V RHE ). Such a new treatment can be used as an effective tool for developing α-SnWO 4 into efficient photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) materials.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems provide a cost-effective strategy to harvest solar power into green fuels and valuable chemicals. Among various candidate materials for the light-absorbing layer in PEC photoanodes, n-type α-SnWO4 is quite attractive owing to its favorable band positions and decent visible light absorption. Although thin films are the most widely reported type of PEC photoelectrodes, up to now, only very few physical deposition techniques were realized for α-SnWO4 PEC structures. Herein, we demonstrate a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) strategy for high-quality α-SnWO4 thin films for PEC applications. This route features unsophisticated instrumentation, and, more importantly, a chemical process uniformly reacting vaporized SnCl2 with a predeposited WO3 layer on substrates. Homogeneous and phase-pure thin films can be obtained with controllable thickness (260–560 nm) and excellent visible light absorption. The nanoscale film was confirmed with decent intrinsic structural durability, as confirmed by a stable PEC photocurrent output. We also tentatively demonstrated the successful surface modification of a catalytic overlayer on this nanoscale film, which is desired for the efficient extraction of charge carriers. This CVD route first demonstrates a paradigm for preparing metastable oxide thin films, which are of particular interest for PEC and other optoelectronic applications.

Piezo-photocatalytic processes based on heterogeneous catalysts, by establishing electronic fast track to realize electronic storage and conversion, are proved to be effective ways to improve the efficiency of PMS activation. Herein, α-SnWO 4 /ZnO catalyst with p-n heterojunction was constructed to testify the piezo-photocatalytic effect on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for pollution control. The decomposition rate of carbamazepine (CBZ) in the piezo-photocatalytic PMS activation process by α-SnWO 4 /ZnO heterojunction was 12.6 and 5.2 times to that by ZnO and α-SnWO 4 processes, respectively. In addition, the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate of CBZ reached 89%, and TOC in the actual water body was also effectively removed. Free radical quenching and detection experiments showed that nonradicals ( 1 O 2 ) and free radicals (O 2 − , OH) were the mainly active species of the process, by which the toxicity of the intermediates of CBZ was significantly reduced by the combination of the radical and nonradical pathways through hydroxylation and singlet oxygen oxidation . Furthermore, the influences of the experimental factors, including the initial pH, PMS concentration, temperature and reuse of catalysts on CBZ degradation were evaluated. Notably, the activation energy (Ea) in this work was calculated as 34.2 kJ mol −1 , which was lower than that of other reported systems. Overall, this work can scientifically guide the design of high-performance piezo-photocatalysts to use common metals for efficient activation of PMS as economical alternatives over expensive rare metal catalysts for water purification.
