Low-cost shape-control synthesis of porous carbon film on β″-alumina ceramics for Na-based battery application

Yingying Hu,Zhaoyin Wen,Xiangwei Wu,Jun Jin

Porous carbon films with tunable pore structure to modify the β″-alumina electrolyte surface are fabricated through a low-cost and direct wet chemistry method with glucose and poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA) as precursors. FTIR analysis confirms the effective connection between the carbohydrate and the pore-forming agent PMMA through hydrogen bonds . The experimental results indicate that the structural parameters of the porous carbon films, including mean pore size and film thickness, can be tuned simply by adjusting the amount of PMMA in the glucose/PMMA composite. This soft-template-assisted method could be readily extended to modify any other ceramic surfaces. The porous carbon films are demonstrated to greatly improve the wettability of the β″-alumina ceramics by molten sodium . Na/β″-alumina/Na cells are used to investigate the interfacial properties between sodium and the β″-alumina electrolyte. The results obtained at 350 °C reveal that the polarization behavior of the cell is alleviated by the porous coating . This work represents a successful method to coat ceramics with porous carbon and offers a promising solution to overcome the polarization problems of the sodium/β″-alumina interface in Na-based batteries .

Nickel nanowire network coating to alleviate interfacial polarization for Na-beta battery applications

Yingying Hu,Zhaoyin Wen,Xiangwei Wu,Yan Lu

Polarization problem caused by the incomplete wetting of sodium on β″-alumina has been considered as one of the most difficult issues in Na-beta batteries . Here, nickel nanowire network coatings have been designed and fabricated directly on the β″-alumina electrolyte surface to effectively alleviate this problem. The coating consists of interconnecting nickel nanowires with diameter of about ∼100 nm, forming a highly porous morphology. The structural parameters of the nickel network coatings can be tuned mainly by the amount of the poly(methyl-methacrylate) soft template in the precursors. The nickel nanowire network coatings are demonstrated to greatly improve the wettability of the β″-alumina ceramics by molten sodium. Moreover, the nickel coating displays low sheet resistance of ca. 1 Ω sq −1 . The results of Na/β″-alumina/Na symmetric cells at 350 °C reveal that the polarization and the interfacial resistance of the cell is alleviated intensively by the nickel coating, mainly due to the greatly improved wetting performance of the β″-alumina ceramics. This modification design and the soft-template-assisted synthetic method could be readily extended to any other substrate surfaces with arbitrary shape.

Promoted ion conductivity of sodium salt–poly(ethylene oxide) polymer electrolyte induced by adding conductive beta-alumina and application in all-solid-state sodium batteries

Yao Yiwei,Liu Zehua,Wang Xinxin,Chen Jingjing,Wang Xiaotong,Wang Dajian,Mao Zhiyong

Solid polymer electrolytes can significantly improve the safety and energy density of sodium-ion batteries compared with the liquid electrolytes. However, the low ionic conductivity and poor mechanical properties inhibit the practical application. In this paper, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solid polymer electrolytes with enhanced ion conductivity are demonstrated by introducing inorganic solid electrolyte (beta-alumina) filler. With the presence of conductive beta-alumina filler, the ion conductivity of the resultant PEO polymer electrolyte is enhanced from 2.5*10 –4 to 3.95*10 –4 S cm −1 . Applied in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), the cell delivers an initial discharge capacity of 93.1 mAh g −1 and acceptable cycling performance (77.8 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles), which are significantly superior to that of the PEO solid polymer electrolyte without beta-alumina filler modification. The presented results prove that the ion conductivity of PEO polymer electrolyte can be enhanced by adding conductive beta-alumina, promoting its practical application in Na-ion all-solid-state batteries or other electrochemical energy storage systems.

High ionic conductive sodium β-alumina (SBA) and SBA-NaPF6 composite solid electrolytes prepared by cold sintering process

Yuchen Li,Qi Wang,Xuetong Zhao,Binlang He,Yongjian Xiao,Jing Guo,Lijun Yang,Ruijin Liao

Sodium β- alumina (SBA) electrolytes are among the most excellent candidates for all-solid-state batteries due to their high electrochemical performances and low cost of sodium resources. However, thermally sintering at above 1400 °C is required to fabricate high dense SBA electrolytes, thus giving rise to a huge energy consumption. Here, dense SBA electrolytes and (1- x )SBA- x NaPF 6 ( x  = 5, 10, 15, 20 wt%) composites were fabricated using cold sintering process (CSP) below 300 °C with 2 mol/L NaOH solution as transient chemistry. The ionic conductivity of SBA electrolytes is significantly enhanced from 5.53×10 -6  S cm -1 to 5.91 × 10 −4  S cm −1 as 15 wt% NaPF 6 was introduced to the composite, which is comparable with the SBA sintered above 1400 °C. CSP may provide a promising approach for the fabrication of solid-state electrolytes by avoiding the detrimental impact of high temperature heat treatment.

Designing a sustainable interphases for high-performance All-solid-state sodium batteries

Waquar Ahmed Khokhar,Muhammad Khurram Tufail,Faheem Mushtaq,Ning Zhao,Xiangxin Guo

Sodium batteries are emerging as a good option for scaling up energy storage systems because of their abundance and low cost. The development of a high-performance all-solid-state sodium battery alongside a suitable electrolyte-anode interface remains unresolved. In this study, we demonstrate a computation-guided experimental approach to design a sodiophilic interlayer as a sustainable interphase to deal with the large impedance of Alumina solid electrolytes. The alloying reaction and sustainable interphase enhance the interfacial wettability of sodium (Na) on β′′-Alumina solid electrolyte and showed interfacial stability of the Na-Au/β′′-Alumina/Au-Na symmetric cell over 100 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the Na-Au/β′′-Alumina/Au-Na cell offered a reduced interfacial resistance of 370 Ω cm 2 , which could benefit from minimized redox decomposition of the solid electrolyte (SE), ensuring more durable intimate contact. Na/βʺ-Alumina/P2-Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 (NNMO) full solid battery delivered initial discharge capacity of 59 mA h g −1 and 61 % capacity retention over 100 cycles at 0.1 C (60°C). The Na-Au/βʺ-Alumina/NNMO battery presented an initial discharge capacity of 95 mA h g −1 and 90 % capacity retention over 100 cycles. Finite element simulations were also performed, which reveal that the sustainable Na-Au interphase promotes uniform potential distribution and suppresses interfacial points with an intensified electric field, effectively supporting the experimentally observed improvements in interfacial contact and electrochemical stability. Furthermore, the Na-Au/βʺ-Alumina/NNMO cell exhibits a slight modification in areal-specific resistance, increasing from 700 to 900 Ω cm 2 after 100 cycles. This research presented a sodium metal’s chemical and electrochemical stability with solid electrolytes for all-solid-state sodium batteries.

Cross-linked beta alumina nanowires with compact gel polymer electrolyte coating for ultra-stable sodium metal battery

Lei Danni,He Yan-Bing,Huang Huijuan,Yuan Yifei,Zhong Guiming,Zhao Qiang,Hao Xiaoge,Zhang Danfeng,Lai Chen,Zhang Siwei,Ma Jiabin,Wei Yinping,Yu Qipeng,Lv Wei,Yu Yan,Li Baohua,Yang Quan-Hong,Yang Yong,Lu Jun,Kang Feiyu

Sodium metal batteries have potentially high energy densities, but severe sodium-dendrite growth and side reactions prevent their practical applications, especially at high temperatures. Herein, we design an inorganic ionic conductor/gel polymer electrolyte composite, where uniformly cross-linked beta alumina nanowires are compactly coated by a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)-based gel polymer electrolyte through their strong molecular interactions. These  beta alumina nanowires combined with the gel polymer layer create dense and homogeneous solid-liquid hybrid sodium-ion transportation channels through and along the nanowires, which promote uniform sodium deposition and formation of a stable and flat solid electrolyte interface on the sodium metal anode. Side reactions between the sodium metal and liquid electrolyte, as well as sodium dendrite formation, are successfully suppressed, especially at 60 °C. The sodium vanadium phosphate/sodium full cells with composite electrolyte exhibit 95.3% and 78.8% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1 C at 25 °C and 60 °C, respectively.
