The mechanism of bensulfuron-methyl complexation with β-cyclodextrin and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and effect on soil adsorption and bio-activity

Geng Qianqian,Li Tian,Wang Xin,Chu Weijing,Cai Mengling,Xie Jingchan,Ni Hanwen

In this work, the inclusion complexes of hydrophobic herbicide bensulfuron-methyl (BSM) with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-CD (2-HP-β-CD) were prepared and characterized. Phase solubility study showed that both β-CD and 2-HP-β-CD increased the solubility of BSM. Three-dimensional structures of the inclusion complexes were simulated by the molecular docking method. The docking results indicated that guest BSM could enter into the cavities of host CDs, folded, and centrally aligned inside the inclusion complexes. The benzene ring of the guest molecule was close to the wide rim of the host molecules; the pyrimidine ring and side chains of the guest molecule were oriented toward the narrow rim of the host molecule. The inclusion complexes were successfully prepared by the coprecipitation method. The physiochemical characterization data of 1 H NMR, FT-IR, XRD, and DSC showed that the guest and host molecules were well included. BSM had lower soil adsorption and higher herbicidal activity in the complexation form with β-CD or 2-HP-β-CD than in the pure form. The present study provides an approach to develop a novel CDs-based formulation for hydrophobic herbicides.

Molecular simulation and experimental study on the inclusion of rutin with β-cyclodextrin and its derivative

Jingya Liu,Sidian Zhang,Xiuying Zhao,Yi Lu,Meng Song,Sizhu Wu

Rutin is a natural flavonoid compound with various biological activities, but its low water solubility limits its applications in the food and pharmaceutical fields. Complexation with cyclodextrins (CDs) is a powerful method to improve the poorly solubility of rutin, whereas the mechanism for the inclusion still needs to be explored. This study investigated the characteristic and mechanism for inclusion of rutin with  β -cyclodextrin ( β -CD) and 2,6 dimethyl- β -cyclodextrin (DM- β -CD). The molecular simulation provided the possible inclusion structure and revealed that the combination of rutin and CDs is a thermodynamically good process. It also indicated that the complex formed with DM- β -CD had better stability and water solubility compared with  β -CD. Then the complexes of rutin with  β -CD and DM- β -CD were prepared and characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and DSC analysis. Phase solubility studies demonstrated that the solubility of rutin was significantly enhanced by forming 1:1 stoichiometric inclusion complexes. The effect of DM- β -CD in improving the water solubility of rutin is 146% higher than that of  β -CD, which was in accordance with the simulation predictions.

Investigating the oxyresveratrol β-cyclodextrin and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin complexes: The effects on oxyresveratrol solution, stability, and antibrowning ability on fresh grape juice

Jianfei He,Fengxian Guo,Luan Lin,Hongbin Chen,Jie Chen,Yongqiang Cheng,Zong-Ping Zheng

The inclusion complexes of oxyresveratrol (Oxy) with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) were prepared and characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD , TG-DTG and SEM . Based on the optimal formulation, 222.23 ± 1.52 μg and 232.65 ± 2.64 μg of Oxy was included in 1.00 mg of the Oxy-β-CD and Oxy-HP-β-CD dried powder with the water solubility up to 14.44 ± 0.83 mg/mL and 47.33 ± 0.78 mg/mL, yielding about 30 and 100-fold increase in Oxy solubility (about 0.47 mg/mL), respectively. The physical stability and dissolution rate study showed that the formation of inclusion complexes significant enhanced the storage stability of Oxy and its dissolution rate. These results indicated that β-CD and HP-β-CD may be suitable delivery systems of Oxy. Furthermore, as illustrated in this study, inclusion complexes exhibited strong antibrowning effects on fresh grape juice in 24 h, showing its great potential application in the food industry.

Inclusion complexes of cannabidiol with β-cyclodextrin and its derivative: Physicochemical properties, water solubility, and antioxidant activity

Hang Li,Sen-Lin Chang,Tan-Ran Chang,Ying You,Xiao-Dong Wang,Li-Wei Wang,Xiao-Fan Yuan,Ming-Hui Tan,Pei-Dong Wang,Peng-Wei Xu,Wei-Bo Gao,Qing-Sheng Zhao,Bing Zhao

Cannabidiol (CBD), which has a wide variety of biological activities, is one of the phytocannabinoids from Cannabis sativa L. However, due to the poor aqueous solubility, its applications in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical fields are limited. Moreover, the previous researches on the improvement in the solubility of CBD are rare. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are useful materials to improve the solubility of poorly water-soluble molecules. Therefore, this work was aimed to study the physicochemical properties, water solubility, and dissolution rate of the inclusion complexes of CBD with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and 2, 6-di-O-methyl-β-cyclodextrin (DM-β-CD), and to determine the influence of complexation on the antioxidant activity of CBD. Job’s plot and phase solubility study revealed that CBD formed inclusion complexes with β-CD and DM-β-CD at a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. The thermodynamics analysis demonstrated that the inclusion process was spontaneous and endothermic. Then, the inclusion complexes of CBD with β-CD or DM-β-CD were prepared and characterized by PXRD, FT-IR, DSC, SEM, and 1 H NMR. The loading efficiency (LE) of the two inclusion complexes was 20.4% and 17.7% respectively, while the complexation efficiency (CE) was 92.4% and 90.8% respectively. Moreover, the results of molecular docking further showed that CBD was encapsulated successfully. The results also displayed that the water solubility of CBD in CBD/β-CD inclusion complex (IC) and CBD/DM-β-CD IC was significantly increased to 0.395 and 14.118 μg/mL, which was enhanced by 17-fold and 614-fold respectively at such a high LE, and the in vitro dissolution rate of CBD was also promoted after complexation. Besides, the antioxidant activity of CBD was improved after encapsulation with β-CD and DM-β-CD. Significantly, the ABTS free radical scavenging ability of the two inclusion complexes was better than that of Vitamin C (Vc).

Physicochemical properties and fungicidal activity of inclusion complexes of fungicide chlorothalonil with β-cyclodextrin and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin

Shuang Gao,Yanyan Liu,Jingyu Jiang,Qiuyu Ji,Ying Fu,Lixia Zhao,Chunyan Li,Fei Ye

Chlorothalonil (CHT) suffered from its poor water solubility, which limited the application of CHT and might cause environmental pollution due to the use of organic solvents. In our research, inclusion complexes of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with CHT were formed to investigate the effect of β-CD and HPβCD on the water solubility, antifungal activity and thermal stability of CHT. The structure and characteristics of the two inclusion complexes were systematically evaluated by nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermal gravity analysis (TGA). The results of 1 H NMR, FT-IR, SEM and XRD indicated that CHT successfully entered the cavity of β-CD and HPβCD. TGA results proved that the thermal stability of CHT was significantly improved. Molecular modelling demonstrated that cyclodextrin could effectively complex with CHT. In addition, the biological activity test showed that the complexes had better antifungal activity than original CHT. Our research can provide useful information for the more reasonable use of CHT, and cyclodextrin can be more used in agriculture to improve the characteristics of pesticides.

Synthesis of a β-cyclodextrin-modified Ag film by the galvanic displacement on copper foil for SERS detection of PCBs

Jingpeng Yuan,Yongchao Lai,Junling Duan,Quanqin Zhao,Jinhua Zhan

A mono-6-thio-β-cyclodextrin-modified silver film was synthesized via galvanic displacement on copper foil. The prepared silver films could enrich non-polar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) molecules from hydrophilic phase using thiolate β-cyclodextrins (SH-β-CDs) as receptors. The components of as-prepared Ag-coated-Cu (Ag–Cu) film were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Both surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) measurements gave strong evidences that the thiolated β-cyclodextrins (SH-β-CDs) had been immobilized on the surface of silver film. Compared to the substrates prepared in the absence of SH-β-CD, the surface morphology of the CD-modified Ag films was obviously changed. The interfacial enrichment and the capability of substrates to form inclusion complexes with PCBs molecules were tested by using PCB-15 (4,4′-dichlorobiphenyl) as the probe molecules via SERS technique. The measured SERS spectra could distinguish the PCB-15 molecules at micro-molar level according to the most intense CCC bending in-plane mode of PCBs. The enhancement factor (EF) of the SERS substrates for PCB-15 was 1.2   ×   10 5 , which was comparable with a number of previous reports.

Enhancing effect of β-cyclodextrin on carbonation properties of steel slag

Jinglong Huang,Yilian Li,Yunhua Zhang

In order to improve the carbonation properties of steel slag, the carbonation reaction process of steel slag and the formation of carbonation products were regulated by the interaction between multiple hydroxyl groups within β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) molecule and calcium ions leached from steel slag. Through a meticulous experimental design, varying contents of β-CD, from 0.0 % to 5.0 %, were mixed with steel slag to investigate their impact on carbonation kinetics, mechanical strength, and microstructural evolution. The results indicate that β-CD significantly accelerates the carbonation process of steel slag, with a particular boost to the carbonation of β-dicalcium silicate (β-C 2 S), a key mineral contributing to the carbonation activity. At an optimal β-CD concentration of 2.5 %, the compressive strength of the treated slag reached a peak of 138.5 MPa, marking a 13.4 % improvement over the control sample. Similarly, the CO 2 uptake was optimized at 17.9 %, increasing by 21.8 %. Mechanism analysis reveals that β-CD not only facilitates carbonation but also refines the resulting carbonation products, leading to a denser microstructure and enhanced mechanical properties. However, at a β-CD content of 5.0 %, the carbonation process was hindered by excessive viscosity. These pivotal findings propose an innovative strategy to augment the efficiency of carbonation and the inherent material properties of steel slag, thereby fostering a more sustainable approach to the utilization of industrial byproducts.

Synthesis of novel high-performance all-biobased wood flame retardant materials using phytic acid and β-cyclodextrin

Shutong Fan,Xun Gao,Yuan Liu,Layun Deng,Yong Wang,Xiazhen Li,Xianjun Li

This research synthesized a novel all-biobased, highly flame-retardant and smoke-suppressing flame retardant through the reaction of ammonium phytate (PAAn) and succinic acid-modified β-cyclodextrin (SA-β-CD). In the synthesis process, only deionized water was used as the solvent, conforming to the current requirements for eco-friendly approaches. The results showed that under the synergistic effect of PAAn and SA-β-CD, the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the wood were significantly enhanced. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) indicated that the char yield of the PAAn-SA-β-CD2@DW reached 40.24 %. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) were reduced by 91.78 % and 84.41 %. The PAAn-SA-β-CD2@DW sample was not ignited in the cone calorimeter test, and its fire growth index (FGI) value was only 0.094 kW/m 2 ·s, which was 97.37 % lower than that of the untreated wood. The synergistic effect of PAAn and SA-β-CD was found to promote the formation of non-combustible gases, and the generation of a dense protective char layer on the wood surface during combustion. This inhibits the diffusion of oxygen and heat, imparting the significantly improved fire resistance to the treated wood. This study provides a simple and eco-friendly synthesis approach, which broadens the scope of application of phytic acid and β-cyclodextrin.

Preparation and characterization of β-cyclodextrin–oregano essential oil microcapsule and its effect on storage behavior of purple yam

Haohe Huang,Chongxing Huang,Cheng Yin,Muhammad RU Khan,Hui Zhao,Yangfan Xu,Lijie Huang,Dantong Zheng,Minghui Qi

BACKGROUND Natural plant essential oils have antimicrobial properties; however, essential oils are difficult to maintain in a system because of their volatile nature. First, we prepared microcapsules from β -cyclodextrin and oregano essential oil and characterized their properties. Second, the effect of microcapsules on the preservation of freshly cut purple yam was studied using an edible coating technique. Purple yams immersed in distilled water were used as control, and their characteristics were compared with yams coated with citric acid, citric acid + sodium alginate, and citric acid + sodium alginate + β -cyclodextrin–oregano essential oil microcapsules (CA–SA–MC) and stored at 4 °C for 5 days. RESULTS Microcapsules of oregano essential oil and β -cyclodextrin solution were successfully prepared via the inclusion method, with an optimal encapsulation efficiency of 55.14%. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis showed strong bonds between β -cyclodextrin and oregano essential oil. All edible coatings, particularly CA–SA–MC, significantly ( P ≤ 0.05) maintained firmness, total soluble solids, ascorbic acid content, and anthocyanin content compared with control treatment. This treatment also prevented browning and extended the shelf life of purple yam. CONCLUSION Oregano essential oil can be successfully encapsulated into cyclodextrin microcapsules. It has a great impact on the shelf life extension of purple yam and could be successfully applied to other fresh produce. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

Enhancement of the heterogeneous adsorption and incorporation of uraniumVI caused by the intercalation of β-cyclodextrin into the green rust

Tao Huang,Zhiyu Su,Yuxing Dai,Lulu Zhou

The influence of intercalated anions on the structure and composition of green rusts supplies a theoretical possibility for the investigation of the structural modification of Fe II /Fe III (oxyhydr)oxide materials. β-Cyclodextrin was intercalated into the mixed-valent iron-based hydroxide layers to synthesize new green rust materials (β-CD GRs), pursuing high-capacity uranium VI (U VI ) sorption . The molar ratios of Fe II to Fe III and the molar ratios of β-CD GR to Fe II  + Fe III had a significant effect on the synthesis of β-CD GRs. The synthesis process was further optimized by the quadric predictor and desirability function in a central composite design in combination. Both strong acidity and alkalinity were harmful to the adsorption of β-CD GRs towards U VI . The pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model were appropriate in fitting the whole adsorption process. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of β-CD GRs was 2548.61 mg/g. The presence of mimic groundwater constituents explicitly deteriorated the interaction between β-CD GR and U VI species. Nanoscale nodules and particles were formed on the β-CD GR after the adsorption experiments. The peaks at 1159 and 609 cm −1 vanished with the band at 1103 cm −1 being left-shifted to 1117 cm −1 in the FTIR spectra of β-CD GR during the heterogeneous process. The intercalation of β-CD brought obvious enhancement of U VI species sorption to the GR material, which was combinedly driven by several reaction pathways and different from the unmodified GRs.

Simultaneous reduction and sequestration of hexavalent chromium by magnetic β-Cyclodextrin stabilized Fe3S4

Long Kong,Ruixin Yan,Min Liu,Junqing Xu,Takeshi Hagio,Ryoichi Ichino,Liang Li,Xinde Cao

In this study, β-Cyclodextrin (CD) modified Fe 3 S 4 nanomaterials were synthesized by a one-step facile strategy and investigated for the removal of Cr(VI). The resulted CD-Fe 3 S 4 exhibited enhanced removal efficiency toward Cr(VI) than bared Fe 3 S 4 with a maximum capacity of 220.26 mg·g -1 as the molar ratio of CD-to-Fe 3 S 4 at 0.2. The effective performance of CD-Fe 3 S 4 toward Cr(VI) could well maintain under oxic conditions and a wide pH range of aqueous solution. A high selectivity for Cr(VI) was achieved in the presence of coexisting cations and anions. More significantly, a single treatment step of CD-Fe 3 S 4 effectively removed chromium from actual electroplating wastewater to the detection limit of 0.004 mg·L -1 that far below the WHO limitation of Cr (VI) (<0.05 mg·L -1 ) combing with the rapid magnetic separation without adjusting the pH value of wastewater at 7. The effective removal of Cr (VI) by CD-Fe 3 S 4 involved a complex process of surface adsorption/reduction, and solution homogenous reduction and subsequent sequestration of Cr(III) achieving the effective removal of aqueous total Cr. The superior Cr (VI) removal capability and facial separation of CD-Fe 3 S 4 attained its prominent potential application as an effective material for the Cr(VI) removal.

Using cellulose, starch and β-cyclodextrin poly/oligosaccharides as chiral inducers for preparing chiral particles

Huli Yu,Liangjie Wang,Sheng Liu,Biao Zhao,Ke Xiao,Bo Yang,Huabo Duan,Huazhang Zhao,Jianping Deng

Poly/oligosaccharides are renewable natural resources with abundant chirality . Herein, we develop a general route to prepare optically active particles by using poly/oligosaccharides as both chiral inducers and growth templates. By complexing with Cu(NH 3 ) 4 2+ ions, OH groups on C2 and C3 in poly/oligosaccharides can transfer the chirality to Cu(II) and retain it in CuO . At the same time, poly/oligosaccharides direct growth of CuO by in situ transformation of Cu(NH 3 ) 4 2+ ions. Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and starch (ST) are used as representative polysaccharides , and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as a representative oligosaccharide, thus dandelion , duchesnea, and chrysanthemum-like composite particles with chiroptical activity are obtained. Besides, chiral CuO/poly(oligo)saccharide particles (CSP) demonstrate enantioselective ability by differentiating coordination with tryptophan (Trp) enantiomers and form Cu-Trp metal organic framework architectures with different morphologies. The study provides an easily accessible approach to prepare novel functional materials by poly/oligosaccharide-based chiral induction and hold great promise in chiral applications.
