β-CD-MOF-based edible antimicrobial packaging film with humidity-controlled carvacrol release for preserving fresh strawberry

Wenqian Nong,Honglin Luo,Gang Wang,Qicong Chen,Xiaosu Zou,Weiwei Miao,Jun Wu,Weiliang Guan,Shenhong Qu

The development of safe, environmentally friendly, edible antimicrobial packaging films represents a promising alternative to conventional plastic packaging for reducing spoilage and extending the shelf life of fresh food. Here, we propose a novel strategy to construct edible β-CD-MOF/carvacrol@zein (BCCZ) composite films by intertwining β-CD-MOF loaded with the antimicrobial essential oil carvacrol, and zein. The resulting BCCZ films exhibit high humidity-triggered, long-lasting bactericidal efficacy, effective fruit preservation, and excellent biosafety. Characterization revealed that BCCZ films possess a compact texture, hydrophilic surface, low water vapor permeability, and high humidity sensitivity. Additionally, this film act as a “storehouse” for carvacrol, enabling humidity-controlled release (96.3% release at 100% RH and only 12.0% at 43% RH on day 7). BCCZ film effectively inhibited Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus , Gram-negative Escherichia coli , and fungi ( Botrytis cinerea ) through the release of liquid-phase and vapor-phase carvacrols under both direct contact and indirect contact conditions in high humidity. Owing to the film's humidity-triggered, long-term release of carvacrol, strawberries packed in BCCZ films maintained their freshness and appearance significantly better after seven days of storage at 21 °C. This work provides valuable insights and holds promise for the design and commercial application of safe, environmentally friendly freshness-preserving packaging films.

A highly sensitive electrochemical sensing platform to detect rutin in pharmaceutical and serum samples

Rui Liu,Xin Zhang,Ri-jia Liu,Yuan Sun,Bin-qiao Ren

In this study, we created a brand-new g-C 3 N 4 -MWCNTs/Ag/β-CD-MOF electrode that can be used as a platform for the electrochemical sensing of Rutin (RT). The g-C 3 N 4 -MWCNTs/Ag/β-CD-MOF composite was synthesized via calcination treatment and electrodeposition, coupled with hydrothermal reaction. This composite could appreciably enlarge the electrochemically active surface area of the as-prepared sensor to promote electron transfer and result in the enhanced response signals. With the assistance of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV), the electrochemical performance of sensor can be greatly enhanced. Under these optimum conditions, the designed electrochemical sensor was able to sense RT at the lower detection limit (LOD) of 0.69 nM (S/N = 3) with a wider range of 5–500 nM and showed high sensitivity of 1.97 μA .  nM −1. cm −2 at room temperature. Additionally, the selective investigation on RT was performed with the related interfering molecules, and the g-C 3 N 4 -MWCNTs/Ag/β-CD-MOF/GCE showed decent stability and reproducibility. The real-time application of the modified electrode for RT detection was monitored in both pharmaceutical and serum samples with the satisfactory recovery. Overall, this research contributes to the field of the electroanalytical sensing and offers the potential applications in the drug monitoring.

Water-stable PEG2000-modified citric acid crosslinked β-CD MOF for efficient removal of tetracycline hydrochloride: synthesis, adsorption behavior, and mechanism

Chunlin Gou,Ziqing Weng,Xiaoshuang Dai,Jianpeng Liu,Ke Mei,Bin Sun,Neng Qiu

To address the ecological and health risks associated with residual tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in water, a green-synthesized adsorbent composed of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), citric acid (CA), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) was developed for the effective removal of TCH from wastewater. The synthetic parameters were optimized, and the resulting PEG-CA-β-CD MOF was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and SE. TGA analysis indicated an increase in the thermal stability. The maximum adsorption capacity of PEG-CA-β-CD MOF for TCH was 221.6 mg/g at pH = 4. Adsorption kinetics were well-described by the Elovich equation model, while the Freundlich isothermal model accurately described the equilibrium data adsorption Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, the adsorbent maintained 84 % of its initial adsorption capacity after four reuse cycles. Analysis using zeta potential, FT-IR, and XPS confirmed that the possible adsorption mechanism of TCH mainly involves electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and cavity encapsulation. Finally, simulated wastewater experiments showed that PEG-CA-β-CD MOF was able to adsorb TCH efficiently even in the presence of other pollutants. Overall, due to its green synthesis process, low cost, ease of regeneration, and multi-mechanistic adsorption capability, the PEG-CA-β-CD MOF exhibits significant potential for TCH removal in wastewater treatment.

Supramolecular metal-organic frameworks as host-guest nanoplatforms for versatile and customizable biomedical applications

Qiuhui Hu,Bo Zhang,Huiming Ren,Xiaoxuan Zhou,Chengbin He,Youqing Shen,Zhuxian Zhou,Hongjie Hu

Molecular imaging of disease with multifunctional nanoparticles has improved specificity and sensitivity but also raises the complexity, potential toxicity, and cost. Here, we show a facile and degradable self-assembly β-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (β-CD-MOF) nanoplatform for customizable multifunctional imaging. These β-CD-MOF nanoparticles were obtained with favorable morphology and size by controlling the degradation time. The β-CD-MOF were used as nanoplatforms for facile functionalization with adamantane (Ad)-modified probes through host-guest interactions between the surface β-CD units and Ad molecules. We demonstrated the method's feasibility and capability by developing various contrast agents for multiple biomedical imaging, including fluorescence imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and computed tomography (CT) imaging. The nanoprobes showed superior performance compared to the corresponding small molecular probes, including better physio-chemical properties ( e.g. , about 5 times of T 1 relaxivity for MRI, 1.2 times of Hounsfield units for CT), improved pharmacokinetics, effective tissue imaging capability, and low safety concerns. These β-CD-MOF-based nanoparticles are promising host-guest nanoplatforms for developing multifunctional and safe imaging probes. Statement of Significance Molecular imaging of disease with multifunctional nanoparticles has improved specificity and sensitivity but also raises the complexity, potential toxicity, and cost. Here, we introduce facile and degradable self-assembly β-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (β-CD-MOF) nanoplatforms for customizable multifunctional imaging. The significance of this work includes: 1) This work reports the tailoring of MOFs nanoparticles with suitable sizes and shapes for biomedical applications through controllable morphological transition and degradation; 2) The β-CD-MOF-based host-guest nanoplatforms are facile and feasible for developing multifunctional nanoparticular contrast agents for effective tissue imaging; 3) The nanoparticular contrast agents show low safety concerns with a long-term tissue deposition similar to the small molecular probes.
