Novel β-FeOOH@ABS membranes with extremely high permeability fabricated by 3D printing and in situ mineralization for oil–water separation
Lately, frequent offshore oil spills and the limitations of traditional oil–water separation membranes in balancing selectivity and permeability have driven the development of innovative membrane technologies for the efficient treatment of oily wastewater. In this study, a durable and recyclable Acrylonitrile–Butadiene–Styrene (ABS) membrane was fabricated using 3D printing, subsequently sulfonated via radiation-induced grafting, and further modified with in situ mineralization to prepare β-FeOOH@ABS membrane. The β-FeOOH@ABS membrane exhibited excellent hydrophilicity and oleophobicity compared to bare hydrophobic ABS membrane, with a water contact angle of 16° and an underwater oil contact angle of 162°. Under gravity-driven conditions, the β-FeOOH@ABS membrane achieved a separation efficiency exceeding 99.78 % across five different oil–water mixtures, along with an exceptionally high flux of 2.93 × 10 5 L·m -2 ·h -1 , attributed to stable hydration layer formed via β-FeOOH nanorods. Combined 100 cycles durability tests and XDLVO theoretical analysis, it was found that the β-FeOOH@ABS membrane showed excellent long-term stability and anti-fouling performance with high flux recovery of 99.41 % and separation efficiency of 99.83 %, originating from its enhanced fouling resistance. The photocatalytic property of β-FeOOH nanorods also endowed the β-FeOOH@ABS membrane with superior catalytic performance. This work underscores the significant potential of novel β-FeOOH@ABS membranes for advanced oil–water separation applications.
