To overcome conventional membrane challenges in eliminating natural organic matter (NOM) from natural water, we successfully integrated β -iron hydroxide oxide ( β -FeOOH) nanorods onto a PAA-PVDF blend membrane fabricated from poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF).Contact angle assessments with various fluids confirmed the strong organic matter adsorption property of the membrane, with a dispersion component of surface energy at 26.7 mJ/m 2 for β -FeOOH@PAA-PVDF. This membrane consistently removed over 80 % of dissolved organic matter in the cross-flow filtration of water containing 50–150 ppm fulvic acid (FA) under neutral conditions. Such remarkable performance is attributed to the interactions between the Fe-OH groups and the carbonyl (2.960 eV) and phenolic (2.864 eV) groups of FA, overcoming the size sieving limits. Under acidic conditions, zeta potential tests revealed effective ferric coagulation, resulting in over 90 % FA (50 ppm) removal. We thoroughly investigated that common cations (e.g., K + and Ca 2+ ) have impacts on FA removal using β -FeOOH@PAA-PVDF. The used membranes regained nearly original fluxes after washing with trace hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) under ultraviolet (UV) light illumination, outperforming traditional washing with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). Electron spin resonance spectrometry elucidated the cleaning mechanism of β -FeOOH@PAA-PVDF was superoxide anion radical ( O 2 − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) active species. In summary, β -FeOOH@PAA-PVDF showed a superior adsorption capacity (2200 mg/m 2 ) and efficient photocatalytic degradation towards NOM in natural water, providing an efficient cleaning technology for membrane reuse.

The advanced oxidation process of the photo-Fenton reaction can produce hydroxyl radicals with extremely strong oxidizing properties for the efficient and green degradation of various chemical and microbial pollutants. Herein, we report an approach to fabricating heterogeneous Fenton catalysts of β-FeOOH nanorods on porous substrates triggered by mussel-inspired coatings of levodopa (3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl-l-alanine, l-DOPA) and polyethylenimine (PEI) for efficient photocatalytic dyes’ degradation and sterilization. The l-DOPA-based coatings not only promote the formation and immobilization of β-FeOOH nanorods on the porous substrates by strong coordination between catechol/carboxyl groups and Fe3+ but also improve the energy band structure of the Fenton catalysts through a valence band blue shift and band gap narrowing. The photo-Fenton catalysts prepared by the l-DOPA-based coatings exhibit high electron transport efficiency and improved utilization of sunlight. Only 2 h of mineralization is needed to fabricate these catalysts with excellent photocatalytic efficiency, in which the degradation efficiency of methylene blue can reach 99% within 30 min, whereas the sterilization efficiency of E. coli/S. aureus can reach 93%/94% within 20 min of the photo-Fenton reaction. Additionally, the prepared catalysts reveal a high photodegradation performance for various dyes including methylene blue, methyl blue, methyl orange, direct yellow, and rhodamine B. Furthermore, the catalysts retain high dye degradation efficiencies of above 90% after five photodegradation cycles, indicating cycling performance and good stability.

Nowadays, photo reversible color switching systems (PCSS) are always limited by some requirements, such as good stability, low toxicity, fast light response, long cycling performance and low production cost, therefore, it is a huge challenge to develop such a system that integrates beneficial features. Herein, a new type of PCSS have been demonstrated, which integrated reducing agent of triethanolamine (TEOA), catalyst of β-FeOOH nanorods and the redox driven color conversion characteristics of redox dyes. The system has the advantages of high switching rate, high reversibility (>10 cycles), wavelength selective response, safety and less light damage, which can be widely used in rewritable paper. As-prepared rewritable paper has high contrast, high resolution, suitable printing time and good reversibility, which is in line with the environmental protection concept of green printing. Rewritable paper is a kind of self-erasable rewritable medium which is highly suitable for printing. Environmental protection film has the advantages of low cost, convenient preparation and recycling. It is expected to replace the traditional writing, printing paper, existing systems and make a big step forward to practical application. Even more surprising, it also can be applied for a data encoding and reading strategy.

The photo-Fenton reaction has been widely applied in the decontamination of organic pollutants and has shown great potential in environmental remediation. The development of an appropriate catalyst with high activity and stability is essential for its success. Therefore, a composite catalyst was synthesized by in-situ mineralization of β-FeOOH nanorods on carbonized cellulose fabric (CCF) coated with polydopamine (PDA), which was denoted as β-FeOOH/PDA/CCF. The β-FeOOH/PDA/CCF catalyst with more than 77% degradation efficiency towards various contaminants and exhibited excellent chemical stability after six consecutive adsorption/degradation cycles. Radical scavenger experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the presence of hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) that play a crucial role in the photo-Fenton degradation process. In addition, the degradation mechanism and pathway of MB was inferred. This work provides new perspectives on developing catalysts that demonstrate high stability and accelerated electron transfer, which can enhance the application of the photo-Fenton process in practical wastewater purification.
