Broadband near-infrared emission properties of Fe3+ doped β-Mg3Ga2GeO8 phosphor
Near-infrared (NIR) luminescent materials based on Fe 3+ are growing interest in recent years because of the low-toxicity, high-efficiency, and adjustable emission. In this work, a broadband NIR emitting β-Mg 3 Ga 2 GeO 8 : Fe 3+ with [Ga/GeO 4 ] tetrahedron for the replacement of Fe 3+ ion is synthesized in air. X-ray diffraction patterns are used to confirm the crystal structure and phase purity. The excitation spectrum is observed in the region from 210 to 550 nm due to the O 2− - Fe 3+ charge transfer and the d – d electron transitions in 3 d 5 orbit of Fe 3+ . A broadband NIR emission of β-Mg 3 Ga 2 GeO 8 : Fe 3+ with full width at half maximum (∼108 nm) in the region from 610 to 880 nm is assigned to the transition 4 T 1 ( 4 G) → 6 A 1 ( 6 S) of Fe 3+ ion. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra under different excitation wavelengths, concentration dependent PL spectra, time-resolved PL spectra, temperature dependent PL spectra, and lifetimes of β-Mg 3 Ga 2 GeO 8 : Fe 3+ are investigated. We confirm the luminous center (Fe 3+ ), the optimal Fe 3+ concentration (0.8 mol%), and the good thermal stability of β-Mg 3 Ga 2 GeO 8 : Fe 3+ . The luminescence mechanism is analyzed theoretically by the Tanabe-Sugano and energy level diagrams of Fe 3+ in β-Mg 3 Ga 2 GeO 8 : Fe 3+ , and the concentration and thermal quenching mechanisms are explained. The research results will be conducive to the development of new Fe 3+ -doped luminescence materials.
