Uniformly dispersed Co-Corrin/C catalysts for the study of β-O-4 bonding activity in lignin

Shuang Wang,Huihui Zhang,Chunyan Yu,Yue Liu,Yanju Lu,Lu Li

In this study, Co-Corrin/C catalysts with corrin active skeleton were prepared by pyrolysis under anaerobic conditions using vitamin B12 (VB12) as a precursor and activated carbon with rich mesoporous structure as a carrier. The Co-Corrin/C catalyst was applied to the oxidative cleavage reaction of lignin, showing a 92.74 % breakage of β-O-4 bonds. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the low energy gap difference of Co-Corrin/C promotes electron transfer between Co and O. Meanwhile, the pyrrole ring in the corrin structure will be adsorbed and bonded to oxygen, which promotes the generation of large amounts of oxygen free radicals. The C α -OH bond in the lignin aliphatic chain is oxidized to C α =O bond under the action of oxygen radicals, which reduces the dissociation energy of the β-O-4 bond and significantly improves the oxidation efficiency. Cycling experiments proved that Co-Corrin/C has good stability.

Degradation of a Lignin Model Compound by ROS Generated In Situ through Controlled ORR in Ionic Liquid

Haomin Jiang,Yujuan Cheng,Zhaohui Wang,Zhiqun Bai,Yang Tang,Yanzhi Sun,Pingyu Wan,Yongmei Chen

The cleavage of the linkage bonds among the C9 units in lignin molecules via selective oxidation method to obtain small-weight aromatic compounds is an important way to lignin valorisation. In this study, the cleavage pathways of bonds in a lignin model compound, GGE (guaiacylglycerol-β-guaiacyl ether), by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in situ generated through electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in an aprotic ionic liquid ([BMIM]BF4) was investigated. The results indicated that when the main ROS was ·OOH, coniferyl alcohol, guaiacol and vanillin were detected as the degradation products which is supposed to be caused by β-O-4 bonds cleavage; Otherwise, when HO2− was the main ROS, coniferyl alcohol could not be detected and the degradation reaction is believed to be trigerred by Cα-Cβ bonds cleavage.

Ultrahigh solid loading biorefinery with deep eutectic solvent pretreatment for lignin fractionation and nanoparticle preparation

Enqing Zhu,Jinyuan Cheng,Leixin Huang,Hangyu Shen,Jiao Meng,Shaoning Wang,Zhengjun Shi,Muhammad Wajid Ullah,Jinxia Ma,Lili Zhang,Zhiguo Wang

The large-scale application of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in biorefineries has been limited by low biomass loading. This study introduces a novel ZnCl 2 /lactic acid (LA) DES for the efficient isolation of lignin from poplar at ultrahigh solid loading. The results show that 67.41% delignification was achieved under extreme solid loading of 50 wt%. The recovered lignin exhibited unique amphiphilicity, enabling the fabrication of lignin nanospheres (∼123 nm in diameter) with uniform, monodisperse morphology, superior colloidal stability, and excellent Pickering emulsification stability. Reduced density gradient (RDG) analysis demonstrated that the ZnCl 2 /LA DES outperformed the conventional ChCl/LA system due to Zn 2+ coordination with the carboxyl group of LA and stronger noncovalent interactions with lignin, facilitating targeted β-O-4 bond cleavage. Over 95% of cellulose was recovered and processed into lignin-containing cellulose nanofibers, achieving an outstanding tensile strength of 139.17 MPa. The ZnCl 2 /LA DES system demonstrated exceptional recyclability, maintaining 84.41% delignification efficiency even after five consecutive reuse cycles at 33 wt% solid loading.

A Spin-Engineered Nanozyme Overcomes the Activity-Selectivity Trade-Off for Sustainable Adhesive Production From Lignin Biomass Conversion

Yixin Yu,Ran Xu,Xuetong Wu,Bilian Wang,Mingzhen Zhang,Kelong Fan

Lignin, a major component of plant cell walls, is the most abundant source of natural aromatic polymers. Efficient production of its valuable degradation products requires highly selective catalysts. This study introduces a spin-state-modulated nanozyme system for precise lignin depolymerization into targeted biobased chemicals. Precise copper spin state control in two-dimensional (2D) copper-based metal organic framework (MOF) nanozymes, achieved via redox treatment and ligand exchange modulation, replicates natural laccase multicopper center spin synergy. Integrated experiments and theory reveal a volcano-shaped spin state-activity correlation, enabling synthesis of optimized nanozyme Cu(OH) 2 BDC-LA-OAc (COHBLO). This material demonstrates exceptional laccase-mimicking activity, with a peak reaction rate 70 times higher than natural laccase and a 5.14-fold specific activity increase. Through laccase-like catalysis, it selectively cleaves lignin β-O-4 linkages, directionally yielding fragments rich in phenolic hydroxyl groups. Their efficient reaction with epoxy groups produces a nanolignin-based epoxy adhesive. Featuring a three-dimensional cross-linked network, this adhesive delivers superior bonding under varied conditions. Its shear strength significantly surpasses commercial phenolic resins while eliminating conventional adhesive formaldehyde emissions. This study advances 2D MOF nanozyme design and establishes an integrated pathway from controlled lignin depolymerization to high-performance adhesive production, providing key theoretical and practical foundations for biomass valorization and sustainable adhesive development.
