Extensive studies have been conducted on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of antibiotics in water environments. However, the separation and recovery of powdered catalysts from water at the end of the reaction remains a great challenge, which hinders the large-scale application of powder photocatalysts. Inspired by the high sustainability, energy efficiency, and cleanliness of photocatalytic technique in antibiotic degradation, we have developed a stable and efficient ultra-thin porous g-C 3 N 4 /β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (CA-CNS/β-PVDF) membrane for antibiotics removal. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the tetracycline (TC) removal rate of the membrane reached 93.12 % within 2 h due to the synergistic effect of the embedded ultra-thin porous g-C 3 N 4 and β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane still maintained excellent photocatalytic performance after five cycles, showing good stability and reusability. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical quenching analyses suggest that the TC degradation efficiency is enhanced by the synergistic effect of free radical-non-free radical mixed pathways (•O 2 , •OH, h + , 1 O 2 ) and 1 O 2 plays an important role in the degradation process. The excellent photocatalytic antibiotics degradation performances of CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane were still obtained in actual water samples under natural sunlight, suggesting its great application potentials. The photocatalytic mechanism, possible degradation intermediates, and degradation pathways are elucidated based on the theoretical calculations and experiments. The toxicity analysis by QSAR shows that the CA-CNS/β-PVDF membrane successfully reduces the biological toxicity of three antibiotics (TC, OTC, CIP) during the photocatalysis. In all, our work provides a universal immobilization technique of powdered photocatalysts to improve their wastewater purification efficiencies.

For polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based piezoelectric composites, epitaxial growth of ZnO nanorods (ZnO-nr) piezoceramic layer on PVDF is an effective way to improve their piezoelectric performance. However, the crystal nucleus of ZnO featuring polar surfaces that cannot be directly attached to hydrophobic PVDF with low surface energy. Herein, direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing is employed for the first time to create β-PVDF reservoirs with significantly enhanced surface energy, facilitating the attachment and epitaxial growth of ZnO-nr. The printed β -PVDF reservoirs designed with programmed macro-pores and abundant inner micropores, enable a higher loading of ZnO-nr by more than one magnitude, thereby boosting the electro-mechanical response. The resulting PVDF/ZnO core–shell piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) delivers an output voltage of 33.2 V, as well as an unprecedentedly high relative output voltage of 2.76 V/wt.%, which is 2.63 times that of the state-of-the-art 3D-printed PVDF/piezoceramics PEHs. Furthermore, it can differentiate subtle human motions whereas hybrid PEHs cannot distinct. This work demonstrates that the DIW 3D printing approach offers a simple and convenient design idea for creating high performance PEHs.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies have unparalleled advantages in constructing piezoelectric devices with three-dimensional structures, which are conducive to improving the efficiency of energy harvesting. Among them, fused deposition modeling (FDM) is the most widely used thanks to its low cost and wide range of molding materials. However, as the best piezoelectric polymer, a high electroactive β-phase poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) piezoelectric device cannot be directly obtained by FDM printing because the β-crystal is unstable at the molten state. Herein, we develop for the first time ionic liquid (IL)-assisted FDM for direct printing of β-PVDF piezoelectric devices. An IL can induce and maintain β crystals during melt extrusion and FDM printing, ensuring that the β-crystal in the printed PVDF device is as high as 98.3%, which is the highest in 3D-printed PVDF as far as we know. Furthermore, the shearing force provided by the FDM facilitates the directional arrangement of the dipoles, resulting in the printed PVDF device having self-polarization characteristics without poling. Finally, the piezoelectric output voltage of the 3D-printed PVDF device is 4.7 times that of the flat PVDF device, and its area current density (17.5 nA cm–2) is more than that of the reported 3D-printed PVDF piezoelectric device in the literature by two orders of magnitude. The one-step 3D printing strategy proposed in this paper can realize the rapid preparation of complex-shaped and lightweight self-polarized β-PVDF-based piezoelectric devices for energy harvesting.

Barium titanate (BaTiO3) is a typical perovskite-type oxide with high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss, and excellent ferroelectric, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and other properties. In view of the low photogenerated electron-hole separation efficiency of T-BT itself, it is proposed to prepare nanocomposites with good catalytic performance by compound modification with Ag. Considering repeated use, on the basis of powder catalysis, a porous block is prepared by compounding powder and organic polymer PVDF. In this study, the t-BaTiO3/Ag/β-PVDF composite material with porosity of ∼70.4% was prepared with the raw material of PVDF and piezoelectric t-BaTiO3/Ag. The mechanical and piezoelectric photocatalytic properties of the composite material was studied systematically. The piezoelectric coefficient d33 is 1.44 pC/N which can be explained by COMSOL simulation calculation. Moreover, the compressive strength is 1.76 MPa. The degradation MO and RhB results indicated that t-BaTiO3/Ag/β-PVDF composite material had good degradation and cycle stability.

Piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) with a three-dimensional (3D) structure are arousing increasing interest because of the ability to efficiently convert mechanical energy into electricity catering for self-powered systems. Among them, 3D PEHs composed of 1–3-type piezoelectric composites which exploit one-dimensional (1D) piezoceramic fillers rather than conventional powders are particularly attractive. However, an issue involving the orientation of the 1D fillers to utilize the piezoelectric effect renders the 3D structural design for high-efficiency energy conversion more challenging. Herein, for the first time, we introduce the fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing to the flexible construction of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based 3D PEHs by incorporating 1D BaTi2O5 (BT2) nanorods as piezoelectric fillers. The shearing force generated by FDM successfully realizes the in situ uniform orientation of BT2 nanorods in the PVDF (98% β crystals) matrix along the nozzle extrusion direction. Besides, by coupling 3D printing with the appealing piezoelectric anisotropy feature of BT2 nanorods, the 3D PEH is able to generate different piezoelectric responses to the same applied external force from X, Y, and Z directions. Furthermore, an optimized 3D conical array structure is constructed to amplify the effective deformation of the PEH to enhance its piezoelectric output. As expected, customized PEH can continuously power commercial electronic devices and monitor various human motions, indicating 3D printing as a multifunctional strategy to fabricate 3D PEHs with 1–3-type piezoelectric composite materials for self-powering microelectronic applications.

Porous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) attracts considerable attention for mechanical energy harvesting and self-powered systems owing to its exceptional electromechanical coupling capabilities. Supercritical carbon dioxide foaming (SCF) that features solvent-free and green nature is one of the most preferable approaches to construct controllably porous polymers. Nonetheless, the electroactive β-phase of PVDF remains elusive during SCF due to its instability under an elevated temperature. Herein, we pioneer the use of ionic liquid (IL)-assisted SCF for the fabrication of self-polarized β-PVDF piezoelectric foam with tailored cells. IL incorporation not only facilitates CO2 infusion but also catalyzes the formation and preservation of β-phase crystals throughout the SCF process, culminating in a PVDF foam with an exceptionally high β-phase content (98%). Furthermore, the constructed honeycomb-like pore can effectively absorb external forces and significantly amplify the compressive strain, substantially enhancing the piezoelectric output of the PVDF foam. Impressively, PVDF foam with circumferential pore delivers a maximum piezoelectric output of 19.1 V, setting a new benchmark for SCF fabricated PVDF-based foam PEH. This advanced piezoelectric PVDF foam demonstrates significant potential as a flexible sensor for real-time monitoring of human foot pressure, highlighting its utility in adaptive sensing applications.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies possess incomparable advantages in fabricating 3D piezoelectric devices, enhancing the mechanical-to-electrical conversion efficiency. Among them, direct ink writing (DIW) holds great promise in constructing piezoelectric polymer devices as it enables self-polarization benefiting from the alignment of dipoles induced by the high pressure during the printing process. Besides, the electroactive phase of piezoelectric polymers is retained due to the operation is under ambient conditions. However, for the generally applied solvent-evaporation-assisted DIW technique, the architected structure suffers from drastic shrinkage and warpage in the final parts, which ultimately leads to a significant deviation from the programmed measure. In this work, for the first time, we develop a solvent-exchange-assisted DIW printing strategy to architect accurate and stable 3D PVDF PEH. This solvent exchange process in water not only enables the complete retaining of filament measure and generation of micropores to amplify the stain but also promotes the PVDF crystallization and formation of the β-phase. Moreover, trace vitamin B2 is formulated into the ink, affording self-polarized high β-phase content (95%) PVDF with good printability and optimal storage modulus to hold the 3D shapes. As a result, the 3D printed PVDF delivers an output voltage of 17.8 V, increased by 304% compared with device fabricated by solvent-evaporation-assisted DIW technique, and an impressive area output voltage density (11.04 V cm–2) which is twice that of the reported DIW printed PVDF PEH. This facile approach demonstrates a potential roadmap to high performance PEH through exploring complex 3D geometries enabled by the solvent-exchange-assisted 3D printing technique.

Piezoelectric pressure sensors are important for applications in robotics, artificial intelligence, communication devices, etc. The hyperboloid is theoretically predicted to be an unusual 3D structure that allows concerted piezoelectric enhancement owing to its synergistic effects of geometrical stress confinement and stress concentration, but has not been experimentally fulfilled due to a lack of efficient architecting techniques. In this work, a 3D hyperboloidal arrayed self-polarized PVDF piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) is successfully fabricated by incorporating electrohydrodynamic (EHD) pulling technology into fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing. This strategy not only simplifies the layer-by-layer constructing procedure for arrays, but simultaneously realizes a self-polarized and high β-phase (92%) PVDF PEH in a single electric-pulling step, saving posttreatment such as poling and removing excessive additives. Such a PEH delivers a significantly enhanced piezoelectric potential which is around 8 times that of a 2D flat film sensor. Moreover, this PEH featuring excellent linearity within a wide pressure regime, enables the sensing of human activities in a relatively large force range, which is otherwise difficult for traditional film sensors to differentiate. This work demonstrates a potential roadmap to advanced piezoelectric sensors exploiting unusual 3D structures enabled by the unique EHD pulling coupled 3D printing technique.
