A series of cerium sulfides were successfully prepared using commercially available nanoscale CeO 2 as precursor, anhydrous Na 2 CO 3 as dopants, CS 2 as sulfur source, under 600–800 °C, respectively. Properties of samples were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and spectrophotometry. The results showed that corresponding γ-Ce 2 S 3 with small size was obtained by using nanoscale CeO 2 as precursor; pure phase γ-Ce 2 S 3 could be obtained under low temperature of 700 °C. Coloring properties of γ-Ce 2 S 3 obtained under 800 °C were studied by researching γ-Ce 2 S 3 /PE and γ-Ce 2 S 3 /PVC composites, respectively. The results showed that satisfied coloring effects to PE and PVC were obtained by using 0.5 phr and 0.2 phr γ-Ce 2 S 3 , respectively.
As an environment-friendly powder with good coloring performance, rare earth sulfide is one kind of the important choices to replace cadmium and lead colorants. In particular, γ-Ce 2 S 3 belongs to rare earth sesquisulfide, which has a bright red color. However, the uncoated γ-Ce 2 S 3 is easy to decompose and release H 2 S in a humid or acidic environment, and its air thermal stability is limited to 350°C. In this work, γ-Ce 2 S 3 powders coated with zinc oxide were prepared by heterogeneous precipitation method, and a dense protective layer was formed by ZnO to improve chemical and thermal stability. Moreover, silicon dioxide was deposited on the surface of the zinc oxide coating using the microemulsion process to strengthen the powder's acid resistance. The double shells structure greatly promoted thermal stability and acid resistance of γ-Ce 2 S 3 powders. The results showed that rare earth sulfide powders with double shells have good stability for coloring applications.

As an environmentally functional material, zeolite solids can strongly adsorb and decompose harmful indoor gases, such as formaldehyde, to improve the home environment. Rare earth sulfide as a nontoxic and environmentally friendly pigment with good coloring performance is one of the promising choices to replace toxic cadmium- and lead-based pigments. In this work, multifunctional red γ-Ce2S3 pigments coated with microporous zeolite solids have been prepared by a hydrothermal method. The preparation process is safe and environmentally friendly. The fabricated composite solids not only absorb gas and water but also absorb water by microporous structures. The solids also show a stable red color, self-cleaning, and radiative cooling. Our results suggest that the multifunctional red cerium sulfide pigment-coated zeolite solids can be applied in color display, temperature and humidity control, and air purification.
