γ-Valerolactone (GVL) is a promising bio-based platform molecule with significant potential for energy applications. The production of GVL via biomass-based levulinic acid (LA) is an important reaction. To enhance the conversion and selectivity of non-precious-metal catalysts in the LA-to-GVL process and to better understand the key factors influencing this conversion, we conducted a series of experiments. In this study, supported Cu-Ni bimetallic catalysts (Cu-Ni2/Al2O3) were prepared using layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as a precursor. Compared with Cu-Ni catalysts synthesized via the conventional impregnation method, the Cu-Ni2/Al2O3catalysts exhibit higher catalytic activity and stability. The results demonstrated that efficient conversion was achieved with isopropanol as the hydrogen donor solvent, a reaction temperature of 180 °C, and a reaction time of 1 h. The yield of GVL reached nearly 90%, with a decrease of approximately only 6% after six consecutive cycles. The Cu-Ni2/Al2O3catalyst proved to be effective for converting biomass-derived LA to GVL, offering a route that not only reduces production costs and environmental impact but also enables efficient biomass-to-energy conversion.

The hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) is a crucial reaction included in many biorefinery schemes for the production of renewable chemicals and fuels. The development of highly stable supported Ru-based catalysts in the polar protic liquid phase under hydrothermal conditions is still a major challenge. Here, we prepared a 0.85 wt% Ru/ZrO2@C catalyst using a new stabilization strategy based on the UiO-66 (Zr-MOF) material. The catalytic performance of this Ru/ZrO2@C in LA-to-GVL was tested and compared with commercial 5 wt% Ru/C at 10 bar H2, 413 K in water and also in high protic aqueous solution (pH = 1). The full conversion of LA and quantitative yield of GVL were achieved with both catalysts. However, the 5 wt% Ru/C showed poor resistance to deactivation already after the first run. ICP, XPS, HRTEM, AC-STEM, TPR and physisorption data showed that quick deactivation of Ru/C was mainly caused by the leaching of ruthenium in addition to the loss of surface area via carbonaceous deposition in micro-pores. In contrast, the self-prepared Ru/ZrO2@C catalyst showed no apparent drop in catalytic performance either in water or in high protic aqueous solution upon multiple recycling, and no leaching of ruthenium was found even under harsh conditions (pH = 1). Remarkably, in the Ru/ZrO2@C catalyst, Ru (probable single-atom) was highly dispersed on nanotetragonal ZrO2 (3.3 nm), embedded in the amorphous carbon, and no apparent Ru nanoclusters were observed even after reactions. TPR results indicated that this excellent stability might be attributed to strong metal–support interaction between Ru and nanotetragonal ZrO2.

Highly active and thermally stable Cu–Re bimetallic catalysts supported on TiO2 with 2.0 wt% loading of Cu were prepared via an incipient wetness impregnation method and were applied for liquid phase selective hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) in H2. The effect of the molar ratios of Cu : Re on the physico-chemical properties and the catalytic performance of the Cu–Re/TiO2 catalysts was investigated. Moreover, the influence of various reaction parameters on the hydrogenation of LA to GVL was studied. The results showed that the Cu–Re/TiO2 catalyst with a 1 : 1 molar ratio of Cu to Re (Cu–Re(1 : 1)/TiO2) exhibited the highest performance for the reaction. Complete conversion of LA with a 100% yield of GVL was achieved in 1,4-dioxane solvent under the reaction conditions of 180 °C, 4.0 MPa H2 for 4 h, and the catalyst could be reused at least 6 times with only a slight loss of activity. Combined with the characterization results, the high performance of the catalyst was mainly attributed to the well-dispersed Cu–Re nanoparticles with a very fine average size (ca. 0.69 nm) and the co-presence of Cu–Re bimetal and ReOx on the catalyst surface.

Bimetallic nanostructures have attracted great interest as efficient catalyst to enhance activity, selectivity and stability in catalytical conversion. Herein, we report a facile one-pot carbothermal route to in-situ controllable synthesize heterogeneous bimetallic Ni 3 Fe NPs@C nanocatalyst. The X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and N 2 adsorption-description results reveal that the Ni 3 Fe alloy nanoparticles are evenly embedded in carbon matrix. The as-prepared Ni 3 Fe NPs@C catalyst shows excellent selective hydrogenation catalytic performance toward the conversion of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) via both direct hydrogenation (DH) and transfer hydrogenation (TH). In DH of LA, the bimetallic catalyst achieved a 93.8% LA conversion efficiency with a 95.5% GVL selectivity and 38.2 mmol g −1 h −1 GVL productivity (under 130 °C, 2MPa H 2 within 2 h), which are 6 and 40 times in comparison with monometallic Ni NPs@C and Fe NPs@C catalysts, respectively. In addition, the identical catalyst displayed a full conversion of LA with almost 100% GVL selectivity and 167.1 mmol g −1 h −1 GVL productivity at 180 °C within 0.5 h in TH of LA. Under optimal reaction conditions, the DH and TH catalytic performance of 500-Ni 3 Fe NPs@C(3:1) catalyst for converting LA to GVL is comparable to the state-of-the-art noble-based catalysts. The demonstrated capability of bimetallic catalyst design approach to introduce dual-catalytic functionality for DH and TH reactions could be adoptable for other catalysis processes.

The conversion of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) is one of the most important reactions from biomass-derived platform chemicals to value-added chemicals. In this work, nitrogen-doped carbon was introduced into a Ni/Al2O3 catalyst and was employed for the hydrogenation of LA to GVL with a full conversion and equivalent yield under mild conditions, at as low as ambient hydrogen pressure and 130 °C for 6 h. The doping of nitrogen introduced NiNx species and the imperfection of modified nitrogen-doped carbon were beneficial for the selective hydrogenation of carbonyl groups. This catalyst showed excellent activity and selectivity in various solvents and could be recycled for at least 6 runs with little deactivation. In addition to LA, various substrates with both carbonyl and carboxyl groups could also be selectively hydrogenated to the corresponding lactones. This study offers both theoretical foundation and practical instructions for the high-efficiency conversion of LA to GVL over non-noble metal catalysts under mild conditions, especially ambient H2 pressure.

The hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) under mild condition is a promising but challenging process. Herein, SiC supported Ru-Ir bimetallic catalyst exhibit enhanced catalytic activity for aqueous hydrogenation of LA into GVL under mild conditions. Comparing with monometallic Ir 3 /SiC and Ru 3 /SiC, the conversion of LA over bimetallic Ru 0.5 -Ir 2.5 /SiC catalyst increase from 51.2 % and 45.9% to 100% at 25 °C and 0.2 MPa of H 2 pressure. The enhanced catalytic activity of Ru 0.5 -Ir 2.5 /SiC catalyst originates from the electronic synergistic effect among Ru, Ir and SiC. Due to the electron transfer, electron-richened Ir nanoparticles show stronger ability for H 2 dissociation, and the SiC surface produces more active sites to accommodate hydrogen species that spill over from Ir and Ru. The adsorption and hydrogenation of LA molecules occur on the surface of SiC.

The hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) by using water as solvent is a crucial process in the production of fine chemicals from biomass. An ultrathin carbon layer coating CoRu bimetallic catalyst supported on silica (CoRu@C/SiO 2 ) is prepared by using tannis-ligated cobalt-ruthenium complex on silica as precursors, and applied for catalyzed synthesis of GVL from LA. Because of the synergistic effect between cobalt and ruthenium, the addition of small amounts of Ru to Co catalysts can increase the catalytic activity in the aqueous hydrogenation of LA. The ultrathin carbon layer covered on the CoRu bimetallic catalyst can greatly reduce the leaching of active metals. The CoRu@C/SiO 2 catalyst achieves high stability and is reused up to 5 runs without significant loss of performance in aqueous hydrogenation of levulinic acid.

Transforming levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) is a significant route for converting biomass into valuable chemicals. The development of an efficient and robust heterogeneous catalyst for this reaction has aroused great interest. In this work, nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) supported nickel (Ni) based heterogeneous catalyst with excellent activities was successfully synthesized. The Ni/NG catalyst shows outstanding performance for hydrogenation of LA to GVL at a relatively low temperature of 140 °C, which is superior to most of reported heterogeneous catalysts. Further investigations indicate Ni nanoparticles are the active sites and the NG also plays an indispensable role. The catalytic performance is highly depended on the crystallinity, particles sizes and electronic structure of Ni in Ni/NG catalyst, which can be optimized by nitrogen doping. This work affords a new route for designing robust and excellent heterogeneous catalysts by doping method to optimize the support.

Background:γ-Valerolactone (GVL), a green volatile platform compound derived from lignocellulosic biomass, has recently been identified as one volatile organic compound produced by the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteriumStutzerimonas stutzeriNRCB010. Although our previous transcriptomic and phenotypic studies have verified that exogenous GVL can promote the growth of tomato seedlings, the global metabolic reprogramming behind this promoting effect remains unclear. Methods:Tomato seedlings were subjected to exogenous GVL treatments at three concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.5 g/L) for 24 h and 48 h separately. Combined with physiological growth measurements, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry-based widely targeted metabolomics was applied to systematically characterize GVL-mediated metabolic reprogramming. Results:GVL remarkably improved seedling height, biomass and root development, with 0.25 g/L GVL showing the strongest promoting effect. A total of 703 metabolites including lipids, flavonoids and alkaloids were identified. Principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis revealed distinct metabolic separation between control and treated groups, verifying time and concentration dependent metabolic shifts. After 24 h, GVL activated primary pathways (the tricarboxylic acid cycle, amino acid and purine metabolism) to supply growth energy; after 48 h, central carbon and secondary biosynthetic pathways were enriched, and 0.5 g/L GVL specifically triggered defensive isoquinoline and indole alkaloid biosynthesis. Conclusions:GVL coordinately remodels primary and secondary metabolic networks to accelerate tomato seedling growth, which provides sufficient metabolomic evidence for developing GVL as a novel bio-based plant biostimulant.

The
intrinsic incompatibility between lignin and biodegradable
polyesters remains a key barrier to the development of high-performance
biobased composite films. We propose a γ-valerolactone (GVL)-enabled
strategy to regulate interfacial interactions between alkali lignin
(AL) and polycaprolactone (PCL) through cross-linking network formation.
GVL serves as a dissolution and purification medium, removing insoluble
impurities and aggregates while promoting homogeneous lignin dispersion.
A flexible cross-linked network is constructed via epoxy ring-opening
reactions, enhancing interfacial adhesion and modulating chain mobility.
The resulting films exhibit balanced mechanical strength (14.64 MPa)
and ductility (1415% elongation), together with ultraviolet shielding,
photothermal conversion (∼25 ° C), and tunable gas/water
vapor transport (O 2 /CO 2 ≈ 1.2; WVTR <
100 g/(m 2 ·day)). This study provides fundamental insights
and a scalable pathway for engineering biodegradable composite films.

The utilization of renewable biomass using γ-valerolactone (GVL) as a platform is a sustainable and important route for the production of valuable chemicals. Herein, the selective transformation of GVL to 1,3-butadiene over zeolite catalysts under ambient pressure and continuous flow conditions was reported. Effects of zeolite topologies, acid density, reaction temperature, and contact time on the GVL conversion were systematically investigated. A 1,3-butadiene selectivity of 71% and GVL conversion of 100% were achieved over the NaZSM-35 catalyst at 400 °C. Further investigations revealed that the GVL-to-butadiene reaction might proceed by the following reaction route: GVL was first converted to pentenoic acid (PEA) and then dehydrated into acylium ions, further converting to 1,3-butadiene by decarbonylation. This work provided a promising route for the sustainable and selective production of 1,3-butadiene from renewable materials.

In the present study, γ-valerolactone (GVL) is firstly reported to be converted into aromatic hydrocarbons through catalytic pyrolysis . The catalysts and reaction conditions are both critical in maximizing the hydrocarbon selectivity . Four zeolites , i.e. MCM-41, β-zeolite, ZSM-5 and HZSM-5 were tested in this work, among which HZSM-5 (Si/Al = 25) was found to be the most effective catalyst in both reactivity and selectivity. Under the reaction temperature of 500 °C, the highest carbon yield of 56.71% of aromatics was achieved from GVL with HZSM-5 (Si/Al = 25) as catalyst. Moreover, the HZSM-5 catalyst was recycled for five times without significant decrease in product selectivity.
