Adsorption desulfurization is a very effective method to remove thiophenic compounds from fuels. The metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a new type of desulfurization adsorbents because of their porous nature and large specific surface area. In this study, Cu 2+ was covalently introduced into the UiO-66 framework at the defective sites by the solvothermal method. Further, the π-complexation adsorbent UiO-66-Cu(I) containing Cu + for adsorption desulfurization was synthesized by the methanol vapor-induced reduction. The adsorption performance was tested for the removal of thiophene from the model fuels with different sulfur concentrations. In comparison with the pristine UiO-66, the adsorbent UiO-66-Cu(I) has a higher adsorption capacity for thiophene, reaching 14.8 mg S/g. The competitive adsorption results indicated that UiO-66-Cu(I) has good selectivity for thiophene in the presence of aromatic compounds. From the recycling experiments, this adsorption still has the 86 % of the initial capacity after four cycles, indicating that the adsorbent has a good recycling performance.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising in the detection and removal of toxic heavy metal ions from water. However, achieving detection and removal functions requires systematic control of stability, porosity, pore environment, and luminescence properties, which remains a challenge for most COFs materials. Herein, we develop a bithiophene-based stable COF, TAPA-BTDC, with dual functions of simultaneous detection and removal of silver ions from aqueous solution through elaborate structural design and control of the pore environment. The obtained TAPA-BTDC has good thermal stability and chemical stability, possesses high crystallinity and moderate specific surface area (396.83 m 2 /g), and contains dense bithiophene-S chelating sites on the pore walls. These characteristics work together to give TAPA-BTDC the dual function of selective detection and effective removal of silver ions from aqueous solution. This dual function can be attributed to the π-complexation between bithiophene-S chelating sites and silver ions, as verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The charge transfer between bithiophene-S and silver ions alters the weak fluorescence emission caused by the π−π layered structure, enabling TAPA-BTDC to selectively detect silver ions through fluorescence enhancement, and even trace amounts of Ag + (2.4 × 10 −4 mmol/L) can cause observable fluorescence emission. Meanwhile, these bithiophene-S scattered across the pore wall also provide a large number of accessible chelating sites for TAPA-BTDC, enabling it to effectively remove Ag + with a maximum adsorption capacity up to 398.61 mg/g, and TAPA-BTDC can be easily regenerated five times without loss of performance. The results of this study reveal the exceptional potential of COFs with reasonably tailor-made structure in dealing with heavy metal ion contamination.

Adsorption desulfurization represents an alternative technology for the effective removal of thiophenic compounds from fuels. Metal−organic frameworks have been the ideal candidates for the adsorptive desulfurization of fuel due to the high surface areas. Pristine UiO-66 is thought to be appropriate for the removal of small thiophenic compounds. This work developed a new type of hierarchical-pore (micro and mesopores) UiO-66 with a higher specific surface area and porosity for the removal of larger adsorbates using MOF-5 as the template. To enhance adsorption desulfurization performance, the Ag + -exchanged hierarchical-pore UiO-66 (HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag) with π-complexation was synthesized by the ion-exchange method. The HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag samples were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, and N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. Compared with the original UiO-66, the HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag has a higher specific surface area, pore volume, and pore size. The static adsorption experiments showed that HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag had a high adsorption capacity for thiophene and benzothiophene . Moreover, the HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag sample still exhibits high adsorptive performance in the presence of toluene. The regeneration results show that about 90% of the initial adsorption capacity of HP-UiO-66-SO 3 Ag can be regenerated after four cycles.

The absorption of propylene and propane in Cu(I)-based ionic liquids, i.e., 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride/CuCl ([Bmim][Cl]/CuCl), N-Methyl pyrrolidone chloride/CuCl ([HNMP][Cl]/CuCl), and tricaprylmethylammonium thiocyanate/CuSCN ([A336][SCN]/CuSCN), are investigated in this work. It is observed that such Cu(I)-based ionic liquids, especially Bmim-based ionic liquids, present good absorption capability for propylene and good selectivity over propane, e.g., 1.0 kilogram [Bmim][Cl]/CuCl is able to absorb 0.08 mol propylene while only 0.006 mol propane at 25°C and 1.3 bar with the selectivity of 13. The effects of pressure, Cu+ concentration, and temperature on the absorption are investigated; in addition, the absorption kinetics of propylene by [Bmim][Cl]/CuCl is obtained. The much higher absorption capability for propylene than propane is ascribed to the π-complexation between propylene and Cu+. This work shows that the absorption by Cu(I)-based ionic liquids is an potential alternative method for traditional cryogenic distillation with high energy cost to separate propylene and propane.

The development of materials for the control of ethylene concentration is crucial for managing fruit ripening and minimizing postharvest decay. However, commonly used ethylene removal materials, such as activated carbon and zeolite, exhibit weak affinities for ethylene, which hinders their effectiveness in adsorbing ethylene under ambient pressure. In this study, we fabricate a metal-loaded starch aerogel through the in situ reduction of metal ions on starch-fatty acid salt complexes, demonstrating enhanced ethylene adsorption properties for fruit preservation. Characterization analyses, including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, micro-computational tomography and X-ray diffraction, revealed a porous structure with a low-density profile in the metal-loaded aerogels. These aerogels significantly surpassed the ethylene adsorption capacities of both the starch aerogel and ZSM-5 zeolite, with the nano-silver@aerogel and nano-copper@aerogel achieving the highest adsorption capacities of 30.5 mL g −1 and 32.5 mL g −1 , respectively. The materials exhibited excellent repeatable gas uptake capabilities and high stability in ethylene adsorption, which was attributed to the strong interactions facilitated by π-complexation. Theoretical calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy substantiated the π-complexation mechanism between ethylene and the metal centers through electron transfer. Preservation experiments with bananas treated with these aerogels showed that the aerogel effectively maintained fruit freshness by keeping the ethylene concentration at 0 ppm for at least 7 days. This work offers an eco-friendly and reproducible strategy for managing ethylene concentration during fruit storage and preservation, with promising applications in the food industry to reduce postharvest losses.
