SiO2–NiO aerogels with different molar ratios of Si/Ni (n(Si/Ni)) were prepared by a sol–gel method and atmospheric pressure drying technology. The morphology and structure of SiO2–NiO aerogels were characterized by XRD, BET, XRF, and SEM methods. The equilibrium adsorption performance of thiophene or benzothiophene on the SiO2–NiO aerogels were studied at three different adsorption temperatures (298, 313, 333 K). The adsorption equilibrium data of thiophene on SiO2–NiO aerogels were more in line with the Temkin model at the lower temperature, while they were well fitted with both Langmuir and Temkin isotherms at the higher temperature. The maximum saturation adsorption capacities obtained by the Langmuir isotherms at different temperature decreased in the order qm(298 K) > qm(313 K) ≈ qm(333 K). The maximum saturation adsorption capacities of thiophene or benzothiophene on SiO2–NiO aerogels with different n(Si/Ni) values at 298 K decreased in the order SiO2–NiO-23 > SiO2–NiO-74 > SiO2–NiO-6. The maximum saturation adsorption capacities of thiophene and benzothiophene on SiO2–NiO-23 aerogels are 6.4564 and 2.1316 mgS/g, respectively. Both the amount of adsorption active sites and the textural structure of aerogels could significantly affect the adsorption performance. The higher the nickel content, specific surface area, pore volume, and larger pore size of the aerogel, the larger the adsorption capacity. The absolute value of adsorption heat of thiophene on SiO2–NiO aerogels increased gradually with the increase of n(Si/Ni) (the reduction of the Ni content).

The combustion of thiophene sulfides in fuel leads to the release of sulfur oxides (SO x ), which pose significant threats to both ecological systems and human health. Adsorption desulfurization has gained considerable attention from researchers due to its mild operating conditions, low production costs, and minimal impact on octane number. This study investigates the use of Cu-BTC as a platform for developing a novel adsorbent aimed at efficiently removing thiophenic compounds from fuel. Aluminum atoms were incorporated into the framework of Cu-BTC to create micro/mesoporous Al/Cu-BTC. Subsequently, the π-complexation adsorbent Al/Cu(I)-BTC, featuring Lewis acid sites, was synthesized through the in-situ reduction of Al/Cu-BTC using sodium thiosulfate. The adsorption properties of Al/Cu(I)-BTC for thiophene were assessed through both batch and breakthrough experiments. Al/Cu(I)-BTC-0.10(0.28) demonstrated exceptional adsorption performance. The static and dynamic adsorption capacities of thiophene at 500 and 200 ppm were 18.54 mg S/g and 9.49 mg S/g, respectively. Importantly, the adsorption capacity of Al/Cu(I)-BTC-0.10 (0.28) for thiophene in fuel containing 500 ppm sulfur remained at 15.45 mg S/g after six regeneration cycles. In the competitive adsorption of toluene, the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for thiophene in the fuel containing 200 ppm sulfur was 7.84 mg S/g.

Cu2O-SiO2 composite aerogel-like adsorbents with different n(Si/Cu) were synthesized by a sol–gel method, followed by drying under atmospheric pressure, and characterized by BET, XRD, SEM, H2-TPR, XRF, and FTIR means. Their adsorption performance for thiophene and benzothiophene in model fuels was investigated with equilibrium and breakthrough adsorption experiments, respectively. The results showed that Cu2O-SiO2 composite aerogel-like adsorbents exhibited an excellent desulfurization performance based on π-complexation between Cu(I) and thiophenics. The n(Si/Cu) of Cu2O-SiO2 had an obvious effect on their physical properties and consequently desulfurization performance. The BET surface area, pore size, and pore volume decreased with the decrease of n(Si/Cu) (increase of Cu content). Only a part of Cu was incorporated into the materials. The more the Cu(I) and the higher the specific surface area, the larger the adsorption capacity was. Cu2O-SiO2-50 performed the best, and breakthrough adsorption capacities for benzothiophene and thiophene were 5.78 mg S/gads (0.90 mmol-S/mmol-Cu) and 4.76 mg S/gads (0.74 mmol-S/mmol-Cu), respectively. The adsorption data can be well fitted by both the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The effect of competitive adsorption of olefins or aromatics on the desulfurization performance of adsorbents was obviously weaker compared with the result in the literature. The spent Cu2O-SiO2 adsorbents can be well regenerated by benzene–n-heptane washing. The breakthrough adsorption capacity of thiophene on the first regenerated Cu2O-SiO2-50 was 71% of that on fresh adsorbent.

In this study, we develop a direct, thermally initiated radical homopolymerization of vinyl ethers mediated by lithium salts CH3OLi and LiI. In the case of vinyl ether monomers having a hydroxyl group, for example, diethyleneglycol monovinyl ether (DEGV), a high molecular weight poly(DEGV) (Mn = 18 700) is produced in a high yield (≥68%) with negligible acetal formation. Most importantly, this method further enables the radical polymerization of alkyl vinyl ether (IBVE) which has no hydroxyl group to form hydrogen bonds to facilitate the radical polymerization. There are no evident structural defects caused by side reactions such as β-scission and hydrogen abstraction as the poly(IBVE) yield is up to about 50% and Mn = 8500. Under similar conditions, the poly(IBVE) yield of the control run is only 16.2%. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the interaction between Li+ and CC–O of IBVE significantly reduces the HOMO–LUMO energy gap from 6.83 eV to 4.61 eV. In addition, the changes in 1H-NMR chemical shifts of CH2CH–O– further support the existence of interaction between Li+ and CC–O. This cation-π complexation between Li+ and vinyl ether can effectively reduce the electron density of the vinyl group and as a result increases the stability of σ-radicals and suppresses unfavorable side reactions.

Cu+-modified SBA-15 (Cu+/SBA-15, SBA-15 refers well-ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica) was prepared for adsorption of tetracycline (TC) by the pH adjusting reduction method. Some Cu+ species (Cu2O) are aggregated on the outside surface of SBA-15, and the other Cu+ species are highly dispersed in SBA-15 via ≡Si-O-Cu. Its adsorption mechanism was firstly studied via comparison with CuO/SBA-15. The TC adsorption kinetic of Cu+/SBA-15 fitted the pseudo-second-order model well. The adsorption isotherms at 293, 303, and 313 K were determined and modeled with Langmuir and Freundlich equations, and the Qmax of Cu+/SBA-15 for TC calculated from Langmuir model could reach 961.54 mg/g at 313 K. Its good adsorption performance for TC is associated with the high surface area of SBA-15, highly dispersed Cu+ species, and mesoporous structure. The adsorption of Cu+/SBA-15 for TC is an endothermic process, and adsorption heat is 66.88 kJ·mol−1, which implies that the adsorption process of Cu+/SBA-15 for TC is weak chemisorption. The adsorption mechanism of Cu+/SBA-15 was mainly explored via comparing with CuO/SBA-15 by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectroscopy analysis. Besides the coordination complexation of Cu+ with NH2 radical of TC, the π-complexation between Cu+, and the benzene ring of TC improved the adsorption capacity of Cu+/SBA-15 for TC comparing with CuO/SBA-15 and showed a dominant role for TC adsorption.

Preparation of PdO/SiO 2 @graphene oxide (GO) hybrid aerogels were carried out sol-gel method combined with atmospheric drying technology to study their adsorption performance for thiophenics and compared with PdO/SiO 2 . Scanning electron microscope (SEM), N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) for samples were performed. The adsorption performance of PdO/SiO 2 @GO for thiophene were better than that of PdO/SiO 2 , attributed to that incorporation of GO increased the specific surface area and the Pd incorporation rate, where Pd 2+ ions acted as the π-complexation and sulfur-metal (S M) bond adsorption active centers, as well as GO adsorbed thiophene by the π-π stacking effect. The adsorption capacities of PdO/SiO 2 @GO-1.0 for thiophene (TH), benzothiophene (BT) and dibenzothiophene (DBT) were 8.89, 9.3 and 12.6 mg-S/g ads , respectively. The addition of GO in aerogels could improve the inhibition effect of toluene, cyclohexene and pyridine while decreased the inhibition effect of MTBE and H 2 O for the adsorption of thiophene, due to the π-π stacking effect and the hydrophobicity of GO, respectively. The adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic, be well fitted by the apparent second-order kinetic model and dominated by chemical interaction. Pd/SiO 2 @GO-1.0 had a good solvent elution regeneration performance.
