Investigation of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) ions’ sorption behavior onto silica gel modified with anhydride

Hu Peizhuo,Nan Yu,Tai Wenya,Shan Qiang,Zhong Yi,Lei Zhiwei,Liu Tonghuan,Chen Suwen,Qian Lijuan

Modification of silica gel by butanedioic anhydride (SiO 2 –BDAH) results in efficient adsorbents for removal of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) from aqueous solutions. SiO 2 –BDAH was characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, thermogravimetic analysis, and potentiometric titration. The effect of contact time, pH, and initial concentration of radioactive solutions and temperature on the adsorption capacity of the sorbent was investigated. The sorption equilibrium times of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) onto SiO 2 –BDAH were 1.5, 2, and about 10 h. The sorption percentages of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) increased with increased pH from 1 to 5. The sorption process of U(VI), Th(IV), and Eu(III) can be described by the Langmuir model, with sorption capacities of 5.10 × 10 −5 , 5.06 × 10 −5 , and 3.44 × 10 −5  mol/L, respectively. The enthalpy and entropy changes were all positive, whereas the free energy changes were negative. This study indicated that SiO 2 –BDAH can remove U(VI) and Th(IV) at the same time in the presence of multiple ions from waste water quickly.

Enhancing the Electrochemical Performance of a High-Voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Cathode in a Carbonate-Based Electrolyte with a Novel and Low-Cost Functional Additive

Chunlei Tan,Na Wang,Qichang Pan,Yan Li,Yu Li,Qiannan Ji,Xiaoping Fan,Fenghua Zheng,Hongqiang Wang,Qingyu Li

Graphical Butyric anhydride was used as carbonate-based electrolyte additive to construct a thin, uniform cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) film that can alleviate the decomposition of the electrolyte and prevent the dissolution of metal ions to maintain the structural stability of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) during the cycling process, and improve the electrochemical performance of LNMO cathodes in carbonate-based electrolytes. Butyric anhydride (BA) is used as an effective functional additive to improve the electrochemical performance of a high-voltage LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) cathode. In the presence of 0.5 wt % BA, the capacity retention of a LNMO/Li cell is significantly improved from 15.3 to 88.4 % after 200 cycles at 1 C. Furthermore, the rate performance of the LNMO/Li cell is also effectively enhanced, and the capacity goes up to 112 mAh g −1 even at 5 C, which is considerably higher than that of a LNMO/Li cell in electrolyte without BA additive (95.4 mAh g −1 at 5 C). Linear sweep voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry results reveal that the BA additive can be preferentially oxidized to construct a stable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) film on the LNMO cathode. Subsequently, the BA-derived CEI film can alleviate the decomposition of the electrolyte and the dissolution of Mn and Ni ions from the LNMO cathode as well as maintain the structural stability of LNMO during the cycling process; this leads to outstanding electrochemical performance. Thus, this work provides an effective and low-cost functional electrolyte for high-voltage LNMO-based LIBs.

A Multifunctional Injectable Hydrogel Accelerates Hemostasis and Wound Healing via Synergistic Tissue Adhesion, Antimicrobial Activity, and ROS Scavenging

Rongjian Ding,Xiangchuan Xu,Haoyang Ding,Zhen Chen,Hao Xia,Shujun Cao,Zhongwei Gu,Hongli Mao

Injectable hydrogels have great potential in wound repair applications due to their simple operation and ability to adapt to irregular wounds. However, the current injectable hydrogels have poor biocompatibility, insufficient hemostatic performance, and low wound healing efficiency, which limit their application in wound repair. In this study, an injectable hydrogel (TS@EP) was constructed through a catalyst-free amide reaction between NHS ester-terminated four-arm poly(ethylene glycol) (4aPEG-SS), gallic acid-modified ε-poly(l-lysine) (ε-PLL-GA), and amino-terminated Pluronic F127 (APF). The prepared hydrogels have excellent mechanical properties, strong tissue adhesion, and excellent biocompatibility. In addition, the TS@EP hydrogel exhibited remarkable antibacterial and antioxidant capacities, which are critical for preventing bacterial infection and scavenging excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in wound sites. The results of animal experiments have confirmed that the TS@EP hydrogel can effectively seal the wound, thereby achieving rapid hemostasis and also having the function of promoting wound healing. In conclusion, the TS20@E2.5P7.5 hydrogels have great promise as a biomaterial for wound hemostasis and seamless closure, offering a potential alternative to conventional wound management strategies.

Tumor-targeted hybrid micelles enable ROS-responsive CO release and synergistic chemo–gas antitumor therapy

Zhanglong Huang,Shiwei Ding,Lili Zhong,Chenxi Liu,Xiaofei Li,Dan He

Combination therapy holds great promise for enhancing antitumor efficacy by achieving tumor-targeted and sequentially synergistic cytotoxicity. We developed a tumor-targeted hybrid micellar nanoplatform that co-delivers the chemotherapeutic agent pemetrexed (PEM) and carbon monoxide (CO) for synergistic chemo-gas therapy. PEM and Fe₃(CO)₁₂ were covalently conjugated to D-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS), yielding two amphiphilic prodrugs—TPGS-PEM and TPGS-CO—which were co-assembled into hybrid micelles. The presence of PEM enabled folate receptor-mediated active targeting, resulting in efficient uptake by 4T1 breast cancer cells. Intracellular esterase-catalyzed cleavage of the ester bond released PEM, which elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. The increase in ROS triggered site-specific CO release from the Fe–CO complex. This sequential mechanism enabled a cascade of tumor-selective chemotherapy and gas therapy, leading to enhanced apoptosis and reduced tumor proliferation. The hybrid micelles exhibited superior tumor suppression, reduced systemic toxicity, and prolonged survival in tumor-bearing mice.

Tumor-acidity triggered detachment of surface coating and chargereversal of fluorinated polymeric micelles to boost photodynamic cancer therapy

Jia-Mi Li,Ya-Wen Ao,Junwei Yao,Wen-Ru Li,Bao-Jun Xie,Qian Wang,Shi-Wen Huang

Photodynamic therapy efficiency is constrained by tumor hypoxia and insufficient photosensitizer accumulation, to address these limitations, an oxygen-supplying nanoplatform was developed through function-oriented polymer design. Briefly, an amphiphilic copolymer (PFOC-PEI) was firstly synthesized by chemical conjugating perfluorooctanoic acid with branched polyethyleneimine, forming micelles capable of encapsulating chlorin e6 while alleviating hypoxia via fluorocarbon-mediated oxygen delivery. To enhance tumor-selective delivery for biocompatibility, a pH-responsive polyanion (PEI-DMMA) derived from 2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride modification was integrated, yielding composite micelles (Ce6-PFOC-PEI/PEI-DMMA) with tumor stimulus responsiveness charge reversal and oxygen carrying capability. The nanocarrier maintained negative surface charge under physiological conditions to prolong blood circulation, while switching to positive charge at tumor sites through microenvironmental -triggered cleavage of acid-labile amide bonds, thereby enhancing tumor accumulation. In vitro studies demonstrated 1.5-fold higher cellular uptake of Ce6-PFOC-PEI/PEI-DMMA in acidic conditions compared to non-hydrolytic controls (Ce6-PFOC-PEI/PEI-SA), correlating with enhanced ROS generation in C6 glioma cells. The improved phototoxicity was evidenced by lower IC50 values against C6 cells. In vivo evaluation revealed 87% tumor growth inhibition in C6 tumor-bearing nude mice of Ce6-PFOC-PEI/PEI-DMMA, which is superior to that of Ce6-PFOC-PEI/PEI-SA (69%) and Ce6-PFOC-PEI (73%). This oxygen self-supplying platform integrates fluorocarbon-mediated oxygenation with pH-responsive charge reversal, demonstrating enhanced PDT efficacy while maintaining favorable biosafety.

A microenvironment-responsive chitosan based injectable hydrogel with synergistic anti-inflammatory effects of triptolide and copper ions for spinal cord injury repair

Han-Jian Hu,Zhenming Tian,Zeng-Lin Li,Chun Cheung Chan,Hongyan Zhang,Shipeng Tang,Yu Chen,Zhaoyin Chen,Tian Hu,Bin Liu,Gang-Biao Jiang

The inflammatory microenvironment and irregular lesion cavities following spinal cord injury (SCI) severely hinder neural regeneration. This study developed a copper-based supramolecular hydrogel (COCu/TP-g-COS) loaded with triptolide-grafted chitosan oligosaccharide (TP-g-COS) via a dynamic covalent crosslinking strategy for synergistic anti-inflammatory effects and SCI repair. The hydrogel, based on dynamic schiff base bonds between carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and aldehyde-chitosan (OCS), as well as Cu 2+ coordination crosslinking, exhibits injectability, self-healing capability, and microenvironment responsiveness, enabling precise filling of irregular lesion cavities and sustained drug release. In vitro experiments demonstrated that COCu/TP-g-COS achieves pH-dependent staged release of TP, accompanied by continuous Cu 2+ release, which significantly suppresses inflammatory responses and promotes neural differentiation. In vivo experiments confirmed that COCu/TP-g-COS synergistically inhibits inflammation through TP and Cu 2+ , elevating the BBB score to 11 (0) in rats (vs. 3 (0.75) in the SCI group). Histological analysis revealed that the hydrogel significantly promoted axon regeneration and inhibited glial scar formation. Overall, this study provides a multifunctional therapeutic strategy integrating anti-inflammatory regulation and neural regeneration for SCI repair.

Engineering a therapeutic deferoxamine-mesoporous silica-naringin/poly(L-lactic acid) scaffold to reverse ferroptosis-mediated imbalance and promote osteogenic differentiation in osteoporotic microenvironment

Wei Xiong,YuYi Li,Yilin Yan,Tianci Wen,Jingkun Li,Chaoyi Liang,Zechen Zhang,Cijun Shuai,Xiaolin Shi,Zhikui Zeng

Osteoporosis is characterized by disrupted bone metabolism, iron overload, and chronic inflammation, which collectively impair bone regeneration. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of cell death, exacerbates bone loss by inducing oxidative stress and disrupting the immune microenvironment. To address these challenges, we developed a DFO-MS-NG/PLLA scaffold using selective laser sintering. This scaffold integrates deferoxamine (DFO) for iron chelation and naringin (NG) for immunomodulation within a mesoporous silica (MS) matrix. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the scaffold effectively inhibits ferroptosis by reducing intracellular iron and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, promotes osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (mBMSCs), and modulates macrophage polarization towards the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. A co-culture system with mBMSCs and macrophages under iron-overloaded conditions further confirmed the scaffold's ability to enhance bone formation by mitigating ferroptosis and reprogramming the immune microenvironment. This innovative scaffold design offers a promising strategy for osteoporotic bone defects treatment by simultaneously addressing iron overload, inflammation, and impaired osteogenesis.

Decoding the pharmacokinetics of intravenous lentinan: A multiscale journey from the blood to hepatic Kupffer cells' lysosomes

Xu Mu,Jinglin Wang,Shuai Wan,Jingyi Wang,Lei Huang,Nire Wu,Yuxue Zhan,Yuxuan Liu,Yu Zhang,Ziming Zheng,Kan Ding,Kaiping Wang

Lentinan (LNT), a natural polysaccharide, has been widely used as an immunomodulator in clinical therapy for decades. However, due to the difficulty of detection, its pharmacokinetics after intravenous injection have been less studied, limiting its further application. The aim of this study was to investigate the complete fate of intravenous LNT and the related mechanisms. Utilizing the latest radioisotope detection method, we quantified the blood concentration of intravenous LNT and confirmed the biphasic elimination characteristic of LNT. We obtained the relevant pharmacokinetic parameters, with T 1/2 α and T 1/2 β values of 0.304 and 5.934 h, respectively. Subsequent in vivo distribution studies demonstrated that Kupffer cells (KCs) were associated with the hepatic distribution and metabolism of LNT. In vitro experiments showed that LNT was transported to lysosomes for metabolism after it entered KCs. Mechanistic studies revealed that complement receptor 3 (CR3) recognizes and binds to LNT. In addition, the CR3/Src/Syk/FAK signaling pathway mediated the uptake of LNT by KCs and influenced the subsequent metabolism by regulating lysosomal acidification. In conclusion, this study revealed the in vivo fate and the related mechanisms of LNT from the macroscopic to microscopic levels, which will facilitate further explorations and studies of LNT and other β-glucans.

The influence of dicarboxylic acid derivatives synthesized with different anhydride structures on the performance of waterborne epoxy coatings

Mengtong Wang,Hao Zhang,Liang Shen,Yingying Du,Changqing Fu

Carboxyl-based compounds are widely used to toughen waterborne epoxy coatings due to their excellent compatibility. However, achieving toughening without sacrificing the performance of epoxy resin systems still requires further research and development. This study addresses this challenge through molecular structure design. A series of dicarboxylic acid derivatives were synthesized by reacting four different chain segment structures of anhydride compounds with neopentyl glycol (NPG). 1 HNMR confirmed its successful synthesis, and the structural characteristics and reactivity of the dicarboxylic acid derivatives were analyzed through molecular simulation. We systematically investigated the effects of these dicarboxylic acid derivatives, derived from different molecular segments, on the fundamental physicochemical properties of the waterborne epoxy resin, as well as on the performance of the cured films and the resulting coatings. Results showed that the dicarboxylic acid derivatives NP prepared by the reaction of phthalic anhydride with NPG has the best modification effect. The NP-modified waterborne epoxy resin demonstrated excellent storage stability and a small particle size. Furthermore, it not only improved the mechanical and thermal properties of the cured film but also significantly enhanced the acid, water, and salt spray resistance of an epoxy primer without compromising other key characteristics. This research strategy provides strong guidance for developing high performance waterborne epoxy resins and coatings by tailoring the molecular structure of the modifier.

Alkaline-responsive, zein-based nanospheres with enhanced vertical soil mobility for sustained and targeted control of soybean root rot

Zifeng Yang,Haonan Zhang,Donglai Zhang,Yun Fang,Qiuyu Xiong,Bin Yu,Jingli Cheng,Liqing Li,Qunzhen Guo,Jinhao Zhao

Soybean root rot, primarily caused by Fusarium and Phytophthora spp., severely damages root tissues, impairs nutrient uptake, and leads to plant death, particularly in saline-alkaline soils, where high pH, salt stress, and deteriorated soil conditions reduce the stress resistance of soybean plants. Conventional chemical treatments are less effective owing to the poor vertical mobility of fungicides in alkaline soils. Stimuli-responsive controlled-release formulations can improve the bioavailability of active ingredients, reduce application frequency, and minimize environmental impact. Here, we present a sustainable, biodegradable, and environmentally benign delivery system based on zein, a plant-derived protein. Zein was modified with non-toxic succinic anhydride to improve water dispersibility, resulting in a green carrier (SZ) with reduced ecological risk. The UV-sensitive fungicide difenoconazole (Di) was encapsulated into this carrier via nanoprecipitation to construct a stimuli-responsive nano-enabled delivery system (Di@SZ). Di@SZ exhibited alkaline-triggered release, with rapid release in alkaline conditions. Compared to the commercial emulsifiable concentrate (EW), Di@SZ nanoparticles showed a 3.03-fold improvement in UV resistance. They enhanced vertical mobility of Di in soil, enabling targeted root delivery during drip irrigation in saline-alkaline soils. Pot experiments demonstrated that Di@SZ provided stronger and longer-lasting protection against soybean root rot than EW. Moreover, the system exhibited superior biosafety, with 2.77-fold lower toxicity to soil earthworms relative to EW. These findings underscore Di@SZ as a sustainable, materials-based plant protection technology that integrates renewable resources, reduces environmental impact, and enhances efficacy, offering a promising approach for eco-friendly disease management in agriculture.

The Magic of Organocatalytic Synergism in Switchable Polymerization: One-pot Synthesis of Block Copolymers with Programmable Sequences and Compositions

Zhu Shuai-Shuai,Zhao Mao-Ji,Yuan Ying-Jie,Wang Yong

Switchable polymerization is emerging as a powerful tool to construct block copolymers directly from mixtures of monomers. However, current achievements typically iterate between two polymerization cycles to afford products with fixed sequences and compositions. Herein, we report the triethylborane/1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (Et 3 B/DBU) pair-mediated four-component switchable polymerization of propylene oxide (PO), CO 2 , phthalic anhydride (PA), and racemic lactide ( rac -LA), which enables the on-demand synthesis of four different block copolymers, i.e. , poly(propylene phthalate)- b -polylactide (PPE- b -PLA), PPE- b -PLA- b -poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), PPE- b -PPC- b -PLA, and PPE- b -PPC- b -poly(propylene oxide) (PPO), through rationally modulating the Lewis pair (LP) ratio. Core to this protocol is that increasing the loading of Et 3 B accelerates the ring-opening of PO while impeding the reactivity of rac -LA, thus allowing for fine-tuning of the thermodynamic and kinetic of the switchable polymerization. Therefore, the four polymerization cycles involving PO/PA ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP), PO/CO 2 ROCOP, rac -LA ring-opening polymerization (ROP), and PO ROP can be connected and discriminated in precisely programmed manners.

Study on Surface Charge Regulation of Nano-SiO2 and its Oil Displacement Characteristics in Low Permeability Reservoirs

Haixia Liao,Lei Tang,Fan Yang,Yuaojie Huang,Xiaoli Xiao,Yuanqiang Zhu

Nanofluid flooding technology has shown great application potential in enhancing oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs. To better leverage the size advantage of nano-SiO 2 and improve its dispersion stability, this paper describes the preparation of three types of nano-SiO 2 modified with negatively charged (NPs-YI), positively charged nano-SiO 2 (NPs-YA), and zwitterionic nano-SiO 2 (NPs-LX) by grafting three different electrically charged groups onto the surface of nano-SiO 2 using silane coupling agents. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and particle size analysis show that the surface modification of nano-SiO 2 is successful. The median particle size of NPs-YI is 35   nm, and that of NPs-YA is 55   nm. The modified nano-SiO 2 exhibits good dispersion performance. The effects of temperature, salt concentration, and pH on the dispersion stability of the modified nanofluids were investigated. Results showed that NPs-YI and NPs-YA exhibited minimal changes in median particle size, zeta potential, and transmittance within a 90℃ range. Even under alkaline conditions and within a salt concentration range of 30000   mg/L, the modified nanofluids maintained strong dispersion stability. Static sedimentation experiments demonstrated that under simulated formation water conditions of 30000   mg/L, NPs-YI and NPs-YA remained stable for over 14 days, NPs-LX for over 7 days, while unmodified nano-SiO 2 completely settled within one day. The addition of the modified nanofluids altered rock wettability; after treatment with NPs-YA, the contact angle on the rock surface decreased from 159.17° to 40.24°, indicating a water-wet rock surface. Furthermore, the oil-water interfacial tension decreased to a minimum of 8.19 mN/m after nanofluid treatment. Core displacement and micro-displacement experiments showed that the oil recovery rate of 1000   mg/L NPs-YI crude oil reached a maximum of 43.8%, with a permeability retention rate of 90.8% and minimal core damage. Modified nanofluids primarily enhance oil recovery by reducing oil-water interfacial tension, altering rock wettability, and generating structural separation pressure. The application potential of the three nano-SiO 2 fluids with different surface charge types proposed in this paper in low permeability reservoirs has been verified.
