Synthesis of Low Temperature Resistant Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber Based on Esterification Reaction

Lin Wang,Yanqiang Ni,Xin Qi,Liqun Zhang,Dongmei Yue

Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber (HNBR) is widely used in aerospace, petroleum exploration and other fields because of its excellent performances. However, there remains a challenge of balancing the oil resistance and the low temperature resistance for HNBR. In this work, a series of grafted carboxyl nitrile rubber (XNBR) was prepared by the esterification reaction between active functional groups (–COOH) of XNBR and alkanols of different molecular chain lengths (C8H17OH, C12H25OH, C16H33OH, C18H37OH) or Methoxypolyethylene glycols (MPEG) of different molecular weights (Mn = 350, 750, 1000). The structure and low temperature resistance of as-obtained grafted polymers were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR),1H-NMR and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of grafted XNBR were significantly decreased. MPEG grafted polymers with better low temperature resistance were then selected for hydrogenation. As-prepared hydrogenated XNBR grafted with MPEG-1000 (HXNBR-g-1000) showed the lowest Tgof −29.8 °C and the best low temperature resistance. This work provides a novel and simple preparation method for low temperature resistant HNBR, which might be used potentially in extremely cold environments. Keywords:hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR);grafting;low temperature resistance

High performance NBR/fly ash composites prepared by an environment-friendly method

Shuyan Yang,Junyu Tian,Xiaofei Bian,Yunhui Wu

Fly ash (FA) is a solid waste from coal-fired power stations, which can cause serious environmental problems without further treatment. Although FA has been successfully utilized in building materials , the reuse of FA in the polymer industry has remained a great challenge due to the difficulty in organically-modifying the smooth surfaces of FA particles. In this study, by introducing tannic acid (TA, a naturally occurring plant polyphenol), nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR)/FA/TA composites were prepared via a simple environment-friendly method. The properties of the products were thoroughly investigated and experiments showed that the TA incorporation into NBR/FA composites resulted in formation of hydrogen bonds among NBR, FA, and TA, leading to dramatic improvement in surface adhesion between NBR and FA. As a consequence, the tensile strength of the NBR/20FA/0.4 TA composite was ~110.4% larger than that of NBR/20FA composite, thus opening a new route to large-scale practical use of FA in the polymer industry.

Rheological and Mechanical Properties of Silica/Nitrile Butadiene Rubber Vulcanizates with Eco-Friendly Ionic Liquid

Munir Hussain,Sohail Yasin,Hafeezullah Memon,Zhiyun Li,Xinpeng Fan,Muhammad Adnan Akram,Wanjie Wang,Yihu Song,Qiang Zheng

In this paper we designed greener rubber nanocomposites exhibiting high crosslinking density, and excellent mechanical and thermal properties, with a potential application in technical fields including high-strength and heat-resistance products. Herein 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM]OAc) ionic liquid was combined with silane coupling agent to formulate the nanocomposites. The impact of [EMIM]OAc on silica dispersion in a nitrile rubber (NBR) matrix was investigated by a transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscopy. The combined use of the ionic liquid and silane in an NBR/silica system facilitates the homogeneous dispersion of the silica volume fraction (φ) from 0.041 to 0.177 and enhances crosslinking density of the matrix up to three-fold in comparison with neat NBR, and also it is beneficial for solving the risks of alcohol emission and ignition during the rubber manufacturing. The introduction of ionic liquid greatly improves the mechanical strength (9.7 MPa) with respect to neat NBR vulcanizate, especially at high temperatures e.g., 100 °C. Furthermore, it impacts on rheological behaviors of the nanocomposites and tends to reduce energy dissipation for the vulcanizates under large amplitude dynamic shear deformation. Keywords:nitrile butadiene rubber;rheology;ionic liquids;tensile properties

High-performance, recyclable, and multifunctional nitrile butadiene rubber based on hydrogen and urea bonds

Lin Wang,Manman Jia,Hui Jiao,Shukang Ti,Dongmei Yue

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) is widely used in aerospace, petroleum exploration, auto parts, and other fields because of its excellent performance. Nevertheless, NBR usually needs to be crosslinked with sulfur or peroxide, which restricts the tensile performance and recyclability of NBR. Herein, a novel strategy was developed to address these issues by introducing dynamic urea bonds into the main chain using a simple, catalyst-free one-pot method. The presence of urea bonds not only provides a large number of hydrogen bonding sites between the molecular chains but also exhibits the remarkable microphase separation properties of thermoplastic elastomers. This approach endows NBR with enhanced dynamic characteristics and significant recyclability. As a result, the as-synthesized multifunctional NBR elastomer (I–A0.5–P0.5) exhibits excellent tensile strength (19.9 MPa), toughness (93.7 MJ m−3), low glass transition temperature (−52 °C), and low compression cold resistance coefficient (0.15 at −55 °C), which are comparable to those of conventionally covalently crosslinked NBR. Importantly, the elastomer can retain its mechanical robustness, chemical structure, and thermal stability after multiple rounds of recycling (after five times of recycling, with a recovery of more than 81%). To broaden the application of NBR products, I–A0.5–P0.5 was crosslinked with sulfur, and its performance was compared with NBR vulcanizates of different acrylonitrile contents. It shows excellent oil resistance and low temperature resistance. Surprisingly, it can also possess the ability to be reprocessed multiple times. This new multifunctional thermoplastic NBR elastomer is of great significance in solving the problem of difficult recycling of traditional NBR and is expected to replace traditional covalently cross-linked NBR.

Improving Thermo-Oxidative Stability of Nitrile Rubber Composites by Functional Graphene Oxide

Rui Zhong,Zhao Zhang,Hongguo Zhao,Xianru He,Xin Wang,Rui Zhang

Graphene oxide (GO), modified with anti-aging agentp-phenylenediamine (PPD), was added into nitrile rubber (NBR) in order to improve the thermo-oxidative stability of NBR. The modification of GO and the transformation of functional groups were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Mechanical performances of NBR composites before and after the thermo-oxidative aging were recorded. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) show an increased storage modulus (G’) and a decreased value of area of tan δ peak after introducing modified GO into NBR. It indicates that filler particles show positive interaction with molecular chains. The thermo-oxidative stability of composites was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Then, the thermo-oxidative aging kinetic parameters were obtained by the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) equation. The results of aging tests show that the thermo-oxidative stability of rubber matrix increases obviously after introducing GO–PPD. In addition, mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break) of both before and after aged NBR/GO–PPD composites were superior to that of NBR. This work provides meaningful guidance for achieving multifunction thermo-oxidative aging resistance rubber composites. Keywords:graphene oxide (GO);p-phenylenediamine (PPD);nitrile rubber (NBR);thermo-oxidative stability

Reinforced, Thermal-Healing and Recyclable Chitosan/Ethylene Propylene Diene Rubber Based on Diels-Alder Reaction

Xianning Wang,Runqi Zhang,Lujia Xuan,Mengmeng Yu,Jianqing Mao,Gang Cheng,Jieqiong Yan,Hongzhen Wang

Covalent adaptable networks offer a viable approach for producing recyclable rubber materials. Nevertheless, the intricate synthesis process and insufficient mechanical strength limit their commercialization applications. In this study, the reinforced, thermal-healing, and recyclable chitosan/ethylene propylene diene rubber (CEF-CS) was synthesized using a solid-phase blending process via the Diels-Alder (D-A) reaction. Furfural modified chitosan (F-CS) was included as a reinforcing filler and dynamic cross-linking point into the network formed via the D-A reaction. The influence of F-CS content on the mechanical, thermomechanical, and thermal repair characteristics of CEF-CS composites was examined. The results showed that the CEF-CS composites exhibited certain mechanical strength and dependable repair capabilities. As the F-CS content increased, the tensile strength of CEF-CS composites initially rose and subsequently declined, reaching a peak of 5.1 MPa, which was 5.1 times more than the control without F-CS. The first healing efficiency of tensile strength exceeded 70%, whereas the second healing efficiency was above 60%. Moreover, the simple preparation procedure and enhanced mechanical strength facilitate the commercial utilization of recyclable rubber materials, which is crucial for addressing the environmental pollution issue associated with rubber materials.

Novel and efficient synthesis of insulating gas- heptafluoroisobutyronitrile from hexafluoropropylene

Zhanyang Gao,Min Wang,Shiyao Wang,Yi Wang,Ruichao Peng,Ping Yu,Yunbai Luo

A novel and efficient preparation route of insulating gas-heptafluoroisobutyronitrile was developed. The synthetic route involved halogen-exchange fluorination, decomposition of bis-(perfluoroisopropyl) ketone and dehydration reaction. Overall, the desired compound was produced without the use of extremely toxic and expensive substances. Structures of the as-obtained products were determined by 19F NMR, 13C NMR, IR and GC-MS. The effects of several variables on reaction yield including nature of potassium fluoride, the catalyst dosage, temperature, solvent and molar ratio of raw materials were all investigated. The results indicated that the total yield of heptafluoroisobutyronitrile could reach 42% from original materials under optimal conditions and the mechanism of the reaction was proposed.

The effect of strain rate on the tensile properties of nitrile butadiene rubber with dual crosslinked networks

Li Qiuying,Li Xifei,Liu Dekun,Xu Ruiyang,Wei Shaohua

Requirements for the material with high tensile strength and elongation at break are proposed with the development of soft and stretchable electronics. The nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) crosslinked by coordination bonds has excellent tensile properties and is expected to be used in the flexible electronics field, but the effect of strain rate on tensile properties of crosslinked NBR needs to be further analyzed. In this work, the NBR with dual crosslinked networks was prepared by methods of double ligands crosslinking, covalence-coordination crosslinking, and bimetallic coordination crosslinking. Furthermore, the strain rate sensitivity of tensile properties of NBR with dual crosslinked networks was studied by considering the strain rate as a variable. The results indicated that the strength of the coordination bonds formed by the second ligand had significant effects on the tensile properties of NBR: The coordination bonds with low strength could protect the integrity of the crosslinked network, but the tensile properties of NBR with two different kinds of strong coordination bonds would be more dependent on the strain rate. In covalence-coordination crosslinked or bimetallic crosslinked NBR, the synergy between the two crosslinked networks could not only increase the strength and elongation at break of NBR but also reduce the influence of strain rate on the tensile properties of NBR.

Impacts of deep eutectic solvent on silica/nitrile rubber nanocomposites for high-pressure hydrogen storage applications

Sohail Yasin,Jianfeng Shi,Song Yihu,Chen Qi,MaioMiao Yang,Wenzhu Peng,Ce Zheng,Yang Li,Chaohua Gu

Rubber nanocomposites used for hydrogen (H 2 ) energy storage demand tailored mechanical and compressed gas permeation properties. Herein, deep eutectic solvent (DES) is used as a promising silica dispersant to mediate the mechanical and gas swelling behavior of nitrile rubber (NBR) nanocomposites. The results reveal that DES improves the mechanical deformational stress and lowers the swelling degree with well-dispersed silica in NBR, allowing the preparation of high-performance nanocomposites with potential applications in preventing H 2 leakage in high-pressure equipment facilities. Under 0.01 and 90 MPa H 2 pressures at 24 °C and 37 °C, the NBR nanocomposites with DES demonstrate lower swellings, and the improved crosslinking density and nanofillers dispersion enhance the mechanical properties while retaining the dissipation of the Mullins effect. This sheds light on the mechanical failure mechanism and the design of tailorable high-pressure rubber sealings.

Organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructured composites of liquid nitrile rubber-based quaternary ammonium salt-modified montmorillonite and epoxy resin: preparation and tribological behaviors

Hongling Yi,Meiling Hu,Donggang Yao,Ting Wei,Heng Lin,Baicun Zheng

A new type of polymer derivative, carboxyl-terminated butadiene nitrile rubber-based quaternary ammonium salt (CTBN-QAS), has been synthesized and used for the functionalization of sodium montmorillonite (MMT-Na) via a cationic exchange process. The resulting CTBN-QAS-modified MMT (CTBN-QAS-MMT) exhibits exfoliated and/or intercalated structures as indicated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Further CTBN-QAS-MMT was incorporated into diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with different loadings to produce organic/inorganic hybrid epoxy nanocomposites. Studies were conducted on tribological behavior and dynamic mechanical properties by ring-on-block wear tester and dynamic mechanical analysis, respectively. The results show that as-prepared nanostructured epoxy has better wear resistance and lower friction coefficient than pure epoxy polymer (EP), and the best wear resistance is obtained at 6 phr (parts per hundred) CTBN-QAS-MMT-modified EP. Wear surface morphology analysis shows that the friction mechanism is abrasive wear. Additionally, the good friction resistance and decreased wear loss are correlated with higher glassy storage modulus and lower tan δ . The improved tribological behavior is due to the formation of hybrid organic/inorganic nanostructured epoxy material.

Lignin-Reinforced Nitrile Rubber/Poly(vinyl chloride) Composites via Metal Coordination Interactions

Haixu Wang,Weifeng Liu,Zhikai Tu,Jinhao Huang,Xueqing Qiu

In this work, half the mass of carbon black (CB) was replaced by lignin for preparation of high-performance nitrile rubber/poly(vinyl chloride) composites via constructing interfacial Zn2+-based coordination bonds. It was demonstrated that lignin played a significant role as a natural ligand to form the Zn2+-based coordination interactions in the interphase between lignin and a rubber matrix. The tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the composites were significantly enhanced by the Zn2+-based coordination bonds owing to the dynamic fracture of coordination bonds. The thermo-oxidative aging resistance of the composites was improved by lignin and could be conveniently regulated by the content of ZnCl2 and sulfur. The high-temperature oil resistance of the composites also benefited from the partial substitution of CB by lignin and incorporation of the metal coordination bonds. This work opens a facile method for the potential application of green lignin in rubber–plastic composites through a conventional rubber compounding process.

A facile and environmentally friendly approach to fabricate hybrid crosslinked nitrile butadiene rubber with comprehensively improved mechanical performances by incorporating sacrificial ionic bonds

Xinxin Xia,Zijin Wu,Wanjie Wang,Yonggang Shangguan,Qiang Zheng

It is a challenge to develop advanced elastomers with a combination of high strength , stiffness and toughness by a relatively convenient and environmentally friendly approach. Herein, we reported a facile and environmentally friendly method to prepare hybrid crosslinked nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) comprised of covalent and ionic bonds , and this hybrid crosslinked rubber possesses comprehensively improved mechanical properties , higher crosslinking density, deformation recovery and shape memory ability. The hybrid crosslinked NBR was prepared by incorporating 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) and zinc oxide (ZnO) into NBR via internal milling together with dicumyl peroxide (DCP), and then vulcanization , which is a very simple and environmentally friendly method without extra procedure or treatment. The hybrid crosslinked network in NBR has randomly distributed covalent and ionic bond crosslinks, the strong covalent bonds serve as permanent crosslinks, imparting the elasticity, whereas the weak ionic bonds reversibly rupture and reform, dissipating the energy. Because of the restricting effect of ionic bonds on segmental movement, the hybrid crosslinked NBR shows higher glass transition temperature , lower loss factor peak value and longer relaxation time. By tuning the ionic bond strength via temperature, a much smaller range of linear viscoelastic region is observed for hybrid crosslinked NBR with high content of AMPS and ZnO at a relatively higher temperature, which endows the sample with shape memory ability. This design principle of incorporating ionic bonds to strengthen vulcanized NBR should be applicable to other diene rubber materials.
