Developing lignin-based fillers for reinforcing rubber materials has been recently spotlighted. This work modified lignin via a simple amination and a silylation reaction in a one-pot two-step manner. The molecular structure of aminated lignin (LN) was verified using 2D-HSQC, XPS and elemental analysis. The following silylation on LN results in dual-functionalized lignin (LNSi). LN and LNSi show improved hydrophobicity, reduced Hansen solubility parameters and morphology of nanoparticles (<50 nm). Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites containing 40 phr of fillers were prepared through latex compounding. SBR-LNSi presents comparable tensile strength to the references with carbon black and silica, and enhanced hardness. These remarkable mechanical performances correlate with its high dispersity and affinity with SBR matrix, and the improved rigidity and structuredness due to the self-condensation of silanol groups. This study provides a proof-of-concept for designing lignin-derived fillers with superior reinforcing effect on rubber materials.

Interfacial interaction plays a vital role in the final properties of polymer composites as it affects the filler dispersion and stress transfer in the composites. In this study, we utilized two types of phosphate ester, hydroxyethyl methylacrylate phosphate (PH) and butyl phosphate (PB), as modifiers in boehmite (BM)-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) to tailor the interfacial structures in the composites. The modification mechanism of phosphate ester on BM and the interfacial structure in the composites are characterized. In PH-modified BM/SBR composites, a covalently bonding interface is obtained because PH can act as molecular bridge that can form covalent linkage with both BM and SBR chains. Consequently, the resulting composites show significantly improvements in the physical and mechanical properties of the composites. While in PB-modified BM/SBR composites, the properties of the composites are slightly improved due to the lack of covalent linkage in the interface.

In the tread compound of Green tire, silica dispersity is critical for obtaining high-performance rubber composites. Ionic liquids have been successfully applied in improving the dispersity of silica through chemical and physical interaction. However, recent research has found that ionic liquids are harmful to the ecological environment. Meanwhile, the price of them is high. In this paper, the deep eutectic solvents (DESs-Choline Chloride: urea) was synthesized successfully. Then it was directly introduced to prepare silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compound via an in-situ method. The carbonyl group and amino in DESs could constitute a hydrogen bond with the silanol on the silica surface. The hydroxyl groups were able to react with the silanol groups. The amino groups in DESs could treat as a secondary facilitator, which accelerated the curing rate. The results showed that DESs improved the dispersity of silica effectively and strengthened the interaction between silica and SBR chains. Particularly, the comprehensive performance of the rubber vulcanizates improved with an optimal ratio of bis(3-triethoxysilypropyl)-tetrasulfide (TESPT) to DESs being of 1:1. In addition, the DESs will serve as a novel material in silica-filled SBR composites, which will expand its application in the tire industry.

The reinforcement of sulfur-crosslinked styrene butadiene rubber is of great importance. In this paper, styrene butadiene rubber with high modulus domains was prepared by a simple rubber processing process through the in situ reaction of epoxy resin and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM), and satisfactory enhancement of mechanical properties was obtained. With the increase in epoxy resin from 5 to 15 phr, atomic force microscopy confirmed that the size of the dispersed phase increased from 400 nm ~ 1 μm to 750 nm ~ 2 μm, as well as the modulus increased from 90.1 to 279.3 MPa. Besides, the modulus of the SBR matrix was maintained at 11–15 MPa. It is proved that the dispersed phase forms a high modulus, low adhesion "domain" in the matrix. The 300% modulus, strength, and fracture toughness of the specimens significantly increased to 3.58, 6.34 MPa, and 17.41 MJ/m 3 , which are 2.50, 3.30, and 3.03 times higher than those of SBR, respectively, when the epoxy resin load was 15 phr. This strategy provides a cost-effective approach to obtain high strength rubber materials at high efficiency.

In rubber industry, lignin has been investigated as a potential alternative of fossil-derived carbon black (CB) for several decades. However, due to poor dispersity, big particle size and incompatibility with rubber, lignin cannot achieve the same reinforcing effect as CB by direct dry mixing. Here, a new and green dual-phase carbon-silica nanohybrid (LDPCS) was successfully prepared from black liquor lignin (BLL) and sodium silicate through a simple co-gelation/self-assembly and carbonization process. The preparation mechanism and process as well as the morphology and properties of LDPCS were investigated and discussed in detail. The results indicated that the hydroxymethylation and silane modification of BLL could improve its affinity with SiO 2 sols, thus facilitating the co-gelation of BLL and SiO 2 sols to inhibit the growth of SiO 2 particles. During subsequent acid precipitation, silane modified hydroxymethylated BLL (SiHM-BLL) was self-assembled around SiO 2 particles to form nanosized SiHM-BLL-SiO 2 hybrids. After carbonization, SiHM-BLL-SiO 2 nanohybrids were converted into LDPCS with small primary particle size of 60–90 nm, high specific surface area of 82.19 m 2 /g, relatively loose secondary aggregation structure and graphitic microcrystals in the carbon framework. With incorporating LDPCS into styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) by direct dry mixing, LDPCS showed a superior reinforcing capability for SBR as compared with CB, which was ascribed to the nanoscale dispersion of LDPCS, robust C/SiO 2 interfaces and high affinity with SBR matrix. This work provided a new insight into the fabrication of novel hybrid nanofiller from lignin and broadened the potential applications of lignin in rubber compounds and beyond.

Poor dispersion of graphene in non-polar polymer matrices creates composites with limited applications. A method to improve the dispersion of graphene in solution styrene butadiene (SSBR) and butadiene rubber (BR) via grafting polystyrene (PS) or poly(styrene-co-isoprene) (PSI) on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) is examined. Composites of SSBR-BR with graphene as well as SSBR-BR with GO-PS (or GO-PSI) were prepared by open-mill mixing and vulcanization. Improved dispersion of GO in SSBR-BR composites substantially increases both the tensile strength and the wear resistance properties compared to neat SSBR-BR composites at low loads. More importantly, the wear test results and corresponding wear mechanisms of the all SSBR-BR composites were discussed at different loads.

In this work, graphene oxide (GO) was functionalized with the reactive antioxidant intermediate 4-aminodiphenylamine (RT) to obtain the immobile antioxidant (GO-RT). Then the GO-RT was used as a filler to prepare styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites for enhancing the thermal oxidative stability. The results of fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy demonstrated that RT has been successfully grafted onto the GO. The grafting efficiency of GO-RT was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Oxidation induction time (OIT) tests, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and accelerated aging tests revealed that GO-RT presented much better anti-oxidative and anti-migratory efficiencies than the corresponding low molecular counterpart (4010NA). Additionally, the mechanical strength of the modified rubber composites was also improved by the GO-RT. Thus, the GO-RT antioxidant has the excellent ability to improve the thermal oxidation resistance of SBR and also could obviously strengthen SBR.

Natural rubber/styrene-butadiene rubber (NR/SBR) blends are widely used as tyre sidewall compounds; however, discrepancies in vulcanization rates and the selective distribution of vulcanization additives in SBR and NR contribute to suboptimal dynamic properties. In this study, we propose a straightforward strategy to modulate the multi-scale structure in NR/SBR blends by incorporating an ionic liquid-like deep eutectic solvent (DES) as a novel reactive vulcanization agent. The addition of DES substantially enhances the dispersion of ZnO within NR/SBR blends, accelerates the vulcanization process of SBR and the NR/SBR blend and increases their crosslinking densities. Furthermore, DES interacts with the non-rubber components of NR, facilitating the vulcanization of NR. The impact of DES on the linear and non-linear rheological behavior of NR, SBR and NR/SBR vulcanizates is minimal, except for an enhancement in weak strain overshooting. The distribution of DES within NR/SBR blends can be manipulated by varying the mixing sequence of DES with NR and SBR, while selectively positioning DES within the SBR phase may synchronise the vulcanization rates of the NR/SBR blend, thereby improving tensile strength and reducing mechanical hysteresis. This approach may provide a viable method for producing NR/SBR blend products characterised by high strength and low hysteresis energy.

The effects of various coupling agents on the characteristics and properties of a natural rubber (NR)/styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) matrix and its adhesion to continuous basalt fiber (CBF) cords were studied. Four types of silane-based and two types of titanate-based coupling agents were added separately to the rubber matrix during the mixing process. The processability of the rubber compounds and the mechanical and tension fatigue properties of the vulcanizates were evaluated. The static and dynamic adhesion between the CBF cord/rubber matrices were investigated using the H pull-out test and an elastomer testing system, respectively. The results showed that the effects of the coupling agent were controlled by its chemical structure, and it was found that the addition of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane was the most effective for enhancing the interfacial fatigue properties, due to the combined improvements of the initial adhesion, interfacial stress states, and the fatigue property of the rubber matrix. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A metal–ligand complex is a useful noncovalent bond to build up a cross-link network. Unfortunately, it is a challenge to construct the coordination cross-link networks in commercial elastomers without ligand groups on their polymer chains. In this study, first, a tetrazine click reaction using 3,6-di(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (DPT) successfully introduced nitrogen-containing groups into styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) polymer chains with a facile process in the solid status. Then, the introduced groups on SBR could further coordinate with Cu2+ after mixing with CuSO4 and heating under pressure in bulk. Differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis proved the modification of SBR by DPT, as well as the coordination between ligand groups on SBR and CuSO4. Elastic torque curves effectively monitored the formation of coordination cross-link networks. Finally, due to the reversible breaking and re-forming nature of metal–ligand bonds, the coordination cross-linked SBR exhibited high strength and toughness. Tensile strength up to 10.52 MPa at a fracture elongation of 695% was obtained when the designed DPT click reaction degree is 2% and the content of CuSO4 is 10 phr. The corresponding composite exhibited some recycling value, and the related fracture energy could sustain 58.9 and 30.7% compared to the virgin sample after being reprocessed once and three times, respectively. Thus, in this work, a simple approach was developed to convert widely used SBR into mechanically robust materials via metal–ligand bonds with some reprocessing and recycling ability without using any conventional vulcanizing agent and accelerator.

Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites reinforced by cryptocrystalline graphite (CG) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared. The SBR composite with 50 phr CG content displays superior mechanical reinforcement achieving 20.7 MPa in tensile strength. However, the electrical conductivity enhancement is modest. After incorporating MWCNTs as a secondary filler, the electrical conductivity significantly improved. The results show that the electrical conductivity of the SBR composite reinforced with 10 phr of CG and an additional 5 phr of MWCNTs surpasses that achieved by using 50 phr of CG solely. This enhancement can be attributed to the inherent excellent electric conductivity and high aspect ratio of MWCNTs, with their presence also preventing the re-agglomeration of CG. Furthermore, within 10–40 phr content of CG, the mechanical reinforcement of CG-SBR composites is enhanced with the addition of MWCNTs, whereas a minor decline in tensile strength is noted when the concentration of CG above 40 phr. Overall, the SBR composite reinforced with a synergistic combination of CG and MWCNTs is achieved, demonstrating both exceptional mechanical and conductive properties. Highlights Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites with different cryptocrystalline graphite (CG) phr and additional multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were characterized. CG-SBR displays good mechanical property but limited electrical conductivity. Proper ratio of CG/MWCNTs significantly enhances various properties. MWCNTs act as a “bridge” structure connecting isolated CG filler in SBR matrix. MWCNTs network effectively prevents the re-agglomeration of CG nanosheets.

As a by-product of coal chemical industry, highly-discharged coal gasification fine slag has caused environmental problems such as land occupation and dust pollution. In this work, a high-ash coal gasification fine slag (AFS) and its ball milling products were selected to replace commercial precipitated silica (P-silica) and Micro-silica (M-silica) to fill Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and Natural rubber (NR), respectively. The results showed that the filler network type of SBR changed from Particle Direct Contact Network (PDCN) to Rubber Shell Contact Network (RSCN) due to the replacement of P-silica by AFS fillers and the vulcanization speed improved. However, the replacement of M-silica by AFS-filler didn't change the filler network type of NR composites and resulted in a decrease of vulcanization speed. In both SBR and NR composites, the vulcanization speed, tensile strength, and activation energy of rubber molecular chain movement increased with the decrease of AFS-filler's particle size, which indicates that the reduction of AFS-filler's particle size is beneficial to the improvement of vulcanization speed and reinforcement. In addition, the T 90 of SBR filled with AFS fillers at 5 phr substitution was reduced by 29.0 %–43.3 % and the tensile strength was increased by 4.6 %–44.6 % compared to pure P-silica filled SBR. More importantly, the substitution of commercial silica by AFS reduces energy consumption in the rubber industry and opens up new ideas for improving the universality of coal gasification fine slag as rubber fillers.
