Apparent kinetics and prospective operation on synthesizing Poly(oxymethylene) dimethyl ethers over shaped zeolite BETA in Fixed-bed reactor

Guilin Liu,Feng Xin,Chen Cao,Xubin Zhang,Qian Lei,Honglin Chen,Hailun Ren

Poly(oxymethylene) dimethyl ethers (PODE n=3-5 ), as promising diesel additive, were synthesized by reaction of 1,3,5-Trioxan (TOX) and methylal (PODE 1 ) on the catalyst of zeolite BETA in a fixed-bed reactor and kinetically researched under reaction temperature from 308 to 358 K, initial mole ratio 3∙ N TOX / N PODE1 from 0.8 to 1.2, space time from 0.33 to 20.78 min⋅kg⋅l −1 and water content from 0 to 2  wt %. A series of rate laws were formulated for quantifying not only their reaction rates but also the role of water. The obtained activation energies of propagation and decomposition reactions of PODE n (n = 3 ∼ 8) are 22.89 kJ⋅mol −1 and 27.46 kJ⋅mol −1 respectively, and their pre-exponential factors depend on the “n” in PODE n . Through optimizing the Schulz-Flory distribution of PODE n based on the kinetics, the maximal selectivity of TOX to PODE 3-5 of 57.80% will achieve under anhydrous conditions, while this will become 54.60% under 5  wt % water in TOX.

Vapor–Liquid Equilibrium of 1,3,5-Trioxane + Formaldehyde + Water System Based on Salt Effect

Zhiyuan Wang,Xueyang Wei,Baohui Qi,Xingjian Chen,Jingjing Pi,Ye Yang,Jiahui Zhang,Ningning Wang,Siqi Jiang,Qizhong Huang,Na Gao,Yufeng Hu,Zhichang Liu,Xin Guo

1,3,5-trioxane (TOX), formaldehyde (FA), and water can form an azeotropic system at atmospheric pressure, which causes the TOX produced by reactive distillation to consume a lot of energy to obtain a high-purity TOX product through the subsequent separation and purification process. Therefore, four inorganic salts (MgSO4, MgCl2, CaCl2, and the mixture of MgCl2 and CaCl2) were selected as extractive distillation agents to investigate the effects of inorganic salts on the azeotropic system of TOX + FA + water. Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibrium data were obtained by the experiments on TOX + FA + water and TOX + FA + water + salt at atmospheric pressure. The experimental results show that the addition of inorganic salts can effectively change the azeotropic composition, so that the mass fraction of TOX in the azeotropic system increases from 70.22% to a maximum of 80.66%, which can significantly reduce the energy consumption required for subsequent the separation and purification process. Finally, the data were fitted and correlated with the extended UNIFAC model. The correlation was very consistent with the experimental results, indicating that the extended UNIFAC model has good applicability to the system.

Production of Trioxane from Formaldehyde via Hierarchical Beta Zeolite Synthesized Using a Cationic Polymer

Wang Xue,Duan Zuqin,Wei Richu,Lei Qian,Chen Honglin

Trioxane (TOX), which is usually produced from formaldehyde catalyzed by acid-catalysts, is an important polymerizing monomer to produce high-performance plastics polyoxymethylene polymers (POMs). In order to reduce the separation cost and increase the catalytic activity, hierarchical Beta zeolites with different pore size were synthesized by PDDA and used for TOX produce from formaldehyde in this work. Hierarchical Beta zeolites’ average pore size increased with the increasing of PDDAs’ molecular weight. Compare to conventional Beta zeolite, it exhibited a higher catalytic performance with 95.13% selectivity and 2118 g/kg/h space–time yield of TOX due to its excellent diffusion performance from extra mesopore. The HCHO conversion and space–time yield of TOX increase first and then decrease with the pore size increasing. Further research showed that the decrease of catalytic activity is mainly due to the increase of extra-framework Al percent. This work illustrates the influence of both pore size and extra-framework Al content in hierarchical Beta zeolites for TOX produce from formaldehyde reaction. Graphical Abstract

Significantly improved capacity retention of lithium metal batteries enabled by a 1,3,5-Trioxane electrolyte additive

Wang Jing,Yao Chuan,Su Chang

The practical application of lithium metal batteries is hindered by the heterogeneous solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), which undergoes repeated cracking and reconstruction during cycling, thereby exacerbating lithium dendrite growth. To address this issue, we propose an in-situ reconstruction strategy for the SEI layer by introducing the functional additive 1,3,5-trioxane (TO), which helps to homogenize lithium transport and enhance mechanical stability. By participating in the Li + solvation structure, TO facilitates the formation of a homogeneous and mechanically robust SEI, which preferentially promotes the formation of a polyoxymethylene (POM) phase and enriches LiF content within the SEI. This tailored interface significantly improves the uniformity of lithium deposition and interfacial compatibility. In coin cells employing a high-loading LiNi 0.90 Co 0.05 Mn 0.05 O 2 cathode (7.37 mg cm − 2 ) and an ultrathin lithium anode (50 μm), the TO-modified electrolyte enables a capacity retention of 73.1% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, substantially outperforming the conventional electrolyte that retained only 25.9%. These results demonstrate the promising potential of this electrolyte design for high-energy-density lithium metal batteries.
