Advanced reduction processes initiated by oxidative radicals for trichloroacetic acid degradation: Performance, radical generation, and mechanism

Qiang Zhang,Xiaolei Wang,Nannan Wu,Changyin Zhu,Wenxiu Qin,Danyu Huang,Dongmei Zhou

The degradation of haloacetic acids (HAAs) in aqueous environments poses a challenge due to their oxidative resistance. Given that HAAs are highly carcinogenic disinfection byproducts, it is imperative to develop effective degradation methods to reduce their potential health risk. In this study, we found that only 27.2% of 200 μM trichloroacetic acid (TCA) was removed in the UV-activated persulfate (PS) system after 2 h, while complete removal was achieved with the addition of 15 mM formic acid (FA). The main products of TCA degradation were dichloroacetic acid and monochloroacetic acid. Results from free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy analyses indicated that reductive carbon dioxide radical (CO 2 •− ) was the main active species responsible for TCA reduction. Oxidative radicals (i.e., SO 4 •− and • OH) generated from PS activation reacted with FA to form CO 2 •− , efficiently degrading TCA. The effects of PS and FA concentrations, solution pH, anions (e.g., Cl − , SO 4 2− , and HCO 3 − ), and small organic molecules (e.g., methanol, ethanol, and acetic acid) on degradation efficiency were examined. Overall, this study proposes a simple and efficient method to improve the degradation efficiency of HAAs in the UV/PS system and provides new insights into the advanced reduction processes used for water treatments.

Fate of typical organic halogen compounds during electrodialysis process and improvement of their recoveries

Jie Yang,Yulin Zhang,Yinan Bu,Baiyang Chen,Juan Li

According to an earlier study, electrodialysis (ED) can efficiently separate most organic halogenated micropollutants from inorganic halogens (i.e., halides and oxyhalides) in water, with only a few micropollutants being poorly-recovered. To optimize the ED process and to gain in-depth knowledge of the mechanisms responsible for their low recoveries, this study designed some experiments to examine the fates and transports of three hard-to-separate organic halogen compounds. Results show that the dominant mechanism responsible for the loss of trichlorophenol (TCP) is migration and retention in the ion exchange membrane (IEM), the dominant mechanism for the loss of trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) is ion exchange with the IEM, and the dominant mechanism for the loss of trichloroacetonitrile (TCAN) is volatilization and chemical decomposition during the ED process. Optimizing specific operating conditions (e.g., sealing, voltage, and membrane type, etc.) can improve recovery of these micropollutants to 70.4–95.8% while maintaining 90.4–99.5% removal of chloride. Even though TCAN underwent hydrolysis, we recovered 82.0% chlorine from TCAN and its hydrolytic products. These results may help not only better understand the fates and transports of organic micropollutants during the ED process, but also help facilitate application of electrodialysis technique for measuring total organic halogen.

Fe/Cl/N triply-doped bamboo-like structure wrapped with Fe3C nanoparticles for electrochemical selective nitrite detection

Lufang He,Zhuo Liu,Yuchi Zhang,Le Han,Yan Xu

Nitrite is commonly found in the natural environment and in everyday human activities. However, excessive nitrite consumption can potentially harm human health. Consequently, it is crucial to develop a reliable and sensitive method for nitrite detection. In this work, trichloroacetic acid functionalized Cl-Fe-MIL-88B metal-organic framework is obtained through nucleophilic reaction between animated Fe-MIL-88B and trichloroacetic acid, which is then annealed with melamine in an N 2 atmosphere to produce the Fe/Cl/N triply-doped bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) wrapped with Fe 3 C nanoparticles. Owing to the effective doping of Fe/Cl/N elements, the charge distribution and chemical activity of the bamboo-like structure are tailored, greatly improving the conductivity and facilitating electron transfer of the composite for potential electrocatalytic reaction. The Fe 3 C nanoparticles wrapped inside the CNTs contribute to expose more active sites and provide effective surface area. Accordingly, the Fe/Cl/N doped bamboo-like structure modified glassy carbon electrode shows excellent electrochemical nitrite sensing properties with a high sensitivity of 1060 µA cm −2 mM −1 , a low detection limit of 0.61 µM in a wide linear concentration range of 5–5000 μM, as well as good anti-interference and long-term stability. Also, the electrochemical sensor has a satisfactory recovery rate for detecting nitrite ions in spiked milk samples. This work proposes a simple precursor chlorination and pyrolysis strategy to obtain metal-filled bamboo-like structure with high electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic properties, endowing great potential in food safety and environment monitoring.

Fan Shi,Jiaqi Geng,Baoli Wang,Brij Mohan,Wenhua Chen,Yuxin Bi,Lianjin Jiang,Shu Deng,Shengfen Wang,Xiaoqing Li,Wei Sun

Developing electrochemical biosensors to detect trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and nitrite (NaNO 2 ) helps address serious health risks by improving electron transfer in the enzyme’s active center, enabling accurate monitoring of these harmful substances in environmental and food safety applications. Herein, a novel electrochemical horseradish peroxidase (HRP) biosensor was fabricated by immobilizing on a multi-walled carbon nanotubes-black phosphorene (MWCNTs-BP) nanocomposite modified carbon ionic liquid electrode. The structure and enzyme interaction were characterized using SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The MWCNTs-BP composite enhances electron transfer and interfacial conductivity, enabling efficient direct communication between HRP and the electrode. Under optimal conditions, the biosensor exhibited excellent sensitivity for TCA and NaNO 2 detection with linear ranges of 3.0–558.0 mmol/L (LOD as 1.0 mmol/L) and 0.1–13.6 mmol/L (LOD as 0.03 mmol/L), respectively. It was successfully applied to detect TCA and NaNO 2 in medical facial peel solutions and pickled vegetable soaking water samples, respectively, demonstrating strong practical applicability.

Novel MIL-53(Fe)@C Magnetic Composite Electrode for Efficient Dechlorination of Disinfection By-Product Trichloroacetic Acid in Water Treatment

Xiaoyan Ma,Rongbin Quan,Wenqing Cao,Weijie Zhang,Su Jiang,Jiao Feng,Jiulong Wang,Stefanos Giannakis

Electrochemical reduction is a promising strategy for the dechlorination of halogenated organic compounds, offering advantages such as enhanced electron transfer efficiency and increased hydrogen atom concentration. It has garnered significant attention for application in mitigating halogenated disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water, owing to its high efficiency and simple operation. In this study, trichloroacetic acid (TCAA), a representative DBP, was selected as the target contaminant. A novel composite cathode comprising a metal–organic framework MIL-53(Fe)@C supported on an Nd magnet (MIL-53(Fe)@C-MAG) and its dechlorination performance for TCAA were systematically investigated. The innovative aspect of this study is the magnetic attachment of the MOF catalyst to the carbonized cathode surface treated through carbonization, which fundamentally differs from conventional solvent-based adhesion methods. Compared to the bare electrode, the MIL-53(Fe)@C-MAG achieved a TCAA removal efficiency exceeding 96.03% within 8 h of contact time. The structural characterization revealed that the α-Fe0crystalline phase serves as the primary active center within the MIL-53(Fe)@C catalyst, facilitating efficient electron transfer and TCAA degradation. The scavenger experiments revealed that TCAA reduction involves a dual pathway: direct electron transfer and atomic hydrogen generation. The modified MIL-53(Fe)@C-MAG electrode exhibited robust electrolytic performance over a broad pH range of 3–7, with TCAA removal efficiency showing a positive correlation with current density within the range of 10–50 mA/cm2. Furthermore, the electrode maintained exceptional stability, retaining more than 90% removal efficiency after five consecutive operational cycles. The versatility of the system was further validated by the rapid and efficient dechlorination of various chlorinated DBPs, demonstrating the broad applicability of the electrode. The innovative magnetic composite electrode demonstrates a significant advancement in electrochemical dechlorination technology, offering a reliable and efficient solution for the purification of drinking water contaminated with diverse halogenated DBPs. These results provide valuable insights into the development of electrolysis for dechlorination in water treatment applications.

The matrix effect derived from proteins in fluorescence detection for ciprofloxacin residues in eggs

Kai Wang,Hui Li,Wenya Liu,Pan Liu,Chuang Jiang,Wanqi Jiang,Yaqing Xiao,Yingnan Liu

Based on the previously developed Al 3+ /CuNCs probe, the matrix effect (ME) derived from protein was investigated in the fluorescence determination of fluoroquinolones (FQs) residues in eggs, and a sample pretreatment method was established to rapidly reduce the ME. Molecular docking results indicated that the three main egg proteins and FQs were bound by hydrogen bond, van der Waals force, and alkyl groups, leading to the loss of FQs response signal, and then produced ME. After trichloroacetic acid treatment, the mean particle size of egg matrix decreased, the protein secondary structure changed, and the crystal structure was destroyed. The corresponding ME of the supernatant obtained by centrifugation was only 0.7 %. The standard addition experiment confirmed that the proposed pretreatment method improved the accuracy and reliability of the fluorescence probe. This work is helpful to promote the practical application of fluorescence analysis in the rapid monitoring of food safety hazard factors.

Construction of myoglobin–amphiphilic alginate caprylamide–graphene composite modified electrode for the direct electron transfer between redox proteins and electrode and electrocatalysis of myoglobin

Xiuqiong Chen,Huiqiong Yan,Wei Sun,Guangying Chen,Changjiang Yu,Wen Feng,Qiang Lin

To achieve the dispersion of the hydrophobic graphene (GR), the amphiphilic alginate caprylamide (ACA) was synthesized to fabricate electroactive Nafion/Mb–ACA–GR/CILE for the accurate determination of trichloroacetic acid (TCA). SEM observation, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic analysis indicated that ACA could tightly immobilize Mb and GR on the electrode surface by constructing biointerfaces, which not only provided Mb a suitable microenvironment to maintain its biological activity, but also shortened the distances between the active centers of Mb with carbon ionic liquid electrode (CILE), thus promoting the electron transfer rate. The electrochemical characterization of Nafion/Mb–ACA–GR/CILE showed that the direct electron transfer of Mb was realized on the modified electrode, which was attributed to the high electrical conductivity and excellent electrocatalytic activity of GR and good biocompatibility of ACA. Moreover, Nafion/Mb–ACA–GR/CILE exhibited good electrocatalytic activity towards TCA with the linear range from 2.5 to 47.3 mmol L−1 and lower KMapp value of 8.3 mmol L−1. Moreover, the modified electrode also revealed good stability, reproducibility and accurate detection of tap-water, exhibiting great potential for the applications as the third-generation electrochemical biosensors.

Formation and control of disinfection by-products during the trichloroisocyanuric acid disinfection in swimming pool water

Fangyuan Peng,Yingyang Wang,Yi Lu,Zhaoguang Yang,Haipu Li

The increasing demand for trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) in swimming pool disinfection highlights the need to evaluate its applicability in terms of disinfection by-product (DBP) formation. Nevertheless, there is limited understanding of DBP formation and control during TCCA disinfection, particularly concerning the effects of various management parameters. This study aimed to fill this knowledge gap by comprehensively investigating DBP formation during TCCA chlorination, with a particular focus on assessing the contribution and interaction of influencing factors using Box-Behnken Design and response surface methodology. Results indicated that the concentrations of trichloroacetaldehyde, chloroform, dichloroacetic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and dichloroacetonitrile produced by TCCA disinfectant were 42.5%, 74.0%, 48.1%, 94.7% and 42.6% of those by the conventional sodium hypochlorite disinfectant, respectively. Temperature exhibited the most significant impact on chloroform formation (49%), while pH played a major role in trichloroacetaldehyde formation (44%). pH 2 emerged as the primary contributor to dichloroacetic acid (90%) and trichloroacetic acid (93%) formation. The optimum water quality conditions were determined based on the minimum total DBPs (pH = 7.32, Temperature = 23.7 °C, [Cl − ] = 437 mg/L). Chlorine dosage and contact time exhibited greater influence than precursor concentration on chloroform, dichloroacetonitrile, trichloroacetaldehyde, trichloroacetic acid, and total DBPs. Although the interaction between water quality parameters was weak, the interaction between disinfection operating parameters demonstrated substantial effects on DBP formation (8.56–19.06%). Furthermore, the DBP predictive models during TCCA disinfection were provided for the first time, which provides valuable insights for DBP control and early warning programs.

Characterization of Disinfection By-Products Originating from Residual Chlorine-Based Disinfectants in Drinking Water Sources

Dongmei Yang,Jiale Huang,Fenli Min,Huixian Zhong,Jialu Ling,Qun Kang,Zhaohua Li,Lilian Wen

In this study, samples from the Yangtze River, Han River, and Liangzi Lake in Wuhan City were utilized to characterize the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) from chlorine-based disinfection residues in drinking water sources. The results indicated that the main DBPs in drinking water sources were trichloromethane (TCM) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA). The generation of DBPs was significantly positively correlated with oxidative substances, aromatic compounds, pH, and ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N) content in the water. The concentration of TCAA increased from 0 to 2.45 ± 0.31 mg/L when the reaction time increased to 72 h. As the NaClO concentration increased from 5 mg/L to 15 mg/L, the concentrations of TCAA, TBM, and DCAN increased from 2.03 ± 0.04 mg/L, 0 mg/L, and 0 mg/L to 2.49 ± 0.34 mg/L, 0.21 ± 0.07 mg/L, and 0.10 ± 0.04 mg/L before decreasing to 1.75 ± 0.19 mg/L, 0.17 ± 0.07 mg/L, and 0.04 ± 0.05 mg/L, respectively. The orthogonal experimental results showed that Br − , NH 3 -N, and pH all had significant influences on the TCM generation, whereas temperature affected the formation of TCAA in the Han River. This work reveals the factors influencing the generation of DBPs from chlorine-based disinfection residues, offering a prevention and control method for DBPs in drinking water sources from a theoretical perspective.
