Fabrication of Porous Lead Bromide Films by Introducing Indium Tribromide for Efficient Inorganic CsPbBr3 Perovskite Solar Cells

Xianwei Meng,Kailin Chi,Qian Li,Bingtao Feng,Haodi Wang,Tianjiao Gao,Pengyu Zhou,Haibin Yang,Wuyou Fu

In the process of preparing CsPbBr3films by two-step or multi-step methods, due to the low solubility of CsBr in organic solvents, the prepared perovskite films often have a large number of holes, which is definitely not conducive to the performance of CsPbBr3perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In response to this problem, this article proposed a method of introducing InBr3into the PbBr2precursor to prepare a porous PbBr2film to increase the reaction efficiency between CsBr and PbBr2and achieve the purpose of In (Ⅲ) incorporation, which not only optimized the morphology of the produced CsPbBr3film but also enhanced the charge extraction and transport capabilities, which was ascribed to the reduction of the trap state density and impurity phases in the perovskite films, improving the performance of CsPbBr3PSCs. At the optimal InBr3concentration of 0.21 M, the InBr3:CsPbBr3perovskite solar cell exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 6.48%, which was significantly higher than that of the pristine device.

Porous PbBr2 films modulation by indium tribromide additive for the fabrication of SnO2-based CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells

Kailin Chi,Yuechen Zhai,Yao Wang,Xin Zhang,Fucheng Liang,Shibo Wang

The achievement of complete conversion of PbBr 2 films presents a significant challenge in the development of CsPbBr 3 films with consistent growth, comprehensive coverage, and controllable components. To address this challenge, introducing a porous structure in the planar PbBr 2 film is advantageous for facilitating the immersion of CsBr precursor, thereby reducing impurity phase formation and mitigating strain caused by the film volume expansion. In order to accomplish this, indium tribromide (InBr 3 ) was employed as an additive and the InBr 3 (DMF) 3 adduct was utilized to expedite the release of organic molecules in PbBr 2 (DMF), resulting in the transformation of planar PbBr 2 film into porous structures. The growth orientation of PbBr 2 crystals was altered by this transformation, effectively suppressing the generation of metallic Pb impurities in the film. Additionally, it not only optimizes the morphology of CsPbBr 3 film but also reduces impurity phase. As a result, the InBr 3 :CsPbBr 3 perovskite solar cell achieved an efficiency of 7.28 %. The majority of In 3+ ions were concentrated near the buried interface between SnO 2 and InBr 3 :CsPbBr 3 , leading to significant improvements in both non-radiative recombination defect states within the perovskite film and electron injection and collection capabilities within the device.

Regulating A-Site Alloying of Cs2-xRbxInBr5·H2O Perovskites for NIR LED Applications

Bo Wang,Jingrui Zhang,Liangyi Gu,Jiahong Li,Jian Wang,Limin Zhang,Yuxiao Wu,Xiaoshuang Li

Lead-free halide perovskites have drawn considerable interest, owing to their low-toxicity and favorable photophysical characteristics. However, achieving efficient near-infrared (NIR) emission often suffers from a trade-off between the red shift and quantum yield. Herein, we report a synergistic host-dopant strategy in zero-dimensional Cs2-xRbxInBr5·H2O perovskites. Controlled Rb+ alloying induces lattice contraction, which unexpectedly weakens electron–phonon coupling and suppresses nonradiative decay, leading to a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 53.2%. Subsequently Mn2+ doping further passivates defect states, boosting the PLQY to 67.5%. Density functional theory calculations and temperature-dependent spectroscopy elucidate the role of the lattice strain in regulating self-trapped exciton emission. A prototype NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) fabricated from the optimized material demonstrates a promising performance in night-vision imaging and plant growth applications. This work provides a viable design strategy for efficient and stable NIR phosphors via a coupled lattice and defect engineering.

Designing guanidine-based lead-free hybrid indium perovskites with highly efficient intrinsic broadband emissions

Chunqing Hou,Xiaoting Liu,Zisheng Wang,Fan Yu,Bowen Jin,Yang Yang,Yilong Song,Qingfeng Dong

Recent advances in luminescent materials have highlighted zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halides as highly efficient candidates. Notably, In3+-based organic–inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) are increasingly recognized as promising materials for solid-state light emission. However, the relatively low light yields of these materials significantly limit their application in advanced optoelectronic devices. In this study, we designed a novel 0D hybrid indium halide, (C13H14N3)3InBr6, where C13H14N3 represents 1,3-diphenylguanidine. This compound features a structure in which the halogen anionic polyhedron is completely isolated by large guanidine cations and is regularly arranged at considerable distances on these cations, thus forming an almost ideal host–guest structure. Impressively, the 0D indium halide exhibits intrinsic broadband yellow-orange light emission, achieving a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 86.12%, which is the highest PLQY ever reported for In-based OIMHs. Additionally, we successfully fabricated white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) using (C13H14N3)3InBr6 as a yellow phosphor, thereby demonstrating the potential of novel guanidine-based indium halides in solid-state lighting applications.

Reactivity-matched synthesis of monodisperse Ag(In,Ga)S2 QDs with efficient luminescence

Naiwei Wei,Hong Zhu,Danni Yan,Shuai Yang,Lili Xu,Shengli Zhang,Yuhui Dong,Yousheng Zou,Haibo Zeng

I–III–VI quantum dots (QDs) have gained widespread attention owing to their significant advantages of non-toxicity, large structural tolerance, and efficient photoluminescence potential. However, the disbalance of reactivity between the elements will result in undesired products and compromised optical properties. Reducing the activity of highly reactive group IB elements is the most common approach, but it will reduce the overall reactivity and lead to a wide dispersion of QD sizes. In this study, we propose a method to improve the overall reactivity of the reaction system using the highly active IIIA precursor InI3, which triggers rapid nucleation and promotes the formation of Ag(In,Ga)S2 (AIGS) QDs, resulting in monodisperse particle size distributions and a significantly improved photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) (from 12% to 72%). Furthermore, narrow band edge emission is realized by coating a gallium sulfide (GaSx) shell on the basis of obtaining high-quality AIGS QDs. The core/shell QDs exhibit a 90% PLQY with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of only 31 nm at 530 nm. This study provides a viable design strategy to synthesize monodisperse AIGS QDs with a narrow peak width and efficient luminescence, promoting the application of AIGS QDs in the field of luminescent displays.

Full Color Al-Doped InP Quantum Dots with High Brightness via Gram-Scale One-Pot Synthesis for White Light-Emitting Diodes

Kai-Zheng Song,Jin-Zhao Huang,Meng-Xin Li,Feng-Lei Jiang

High-performance, environmentally friendly indium phosphide (InP)-based quantum dots (QDs) are urgently needed to meet the demands of rapidly evolving display and lighting technologies. By adopting the highly efficient and cost-effective one-pot method and utilizing aluminum isopropoxide (AIP) as the Al source, a series of Al-doped InP/(Al)ZnS QDs with emission maxima ranging from 480 to 627 nm were synthesized. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the blue, green, yellow, orange, and red QDs, with emission peaks at 480, 509, 560, 600, and 627 nm, reached 34%, 62%, 86%, 96%, and 85%, respectively. Remarkably, the required reaction times for synthesizing the above QDs were all within 4 h, showcasing the high efficiency of this one-pot method. Moreover, the influence of Al-doping on red InP/ZnS QDs was thoroughly explored. Compared with undoped QDs, the increased PLQY, narrowed full-width at half-maximum (fwhm), and enhanced photostability were observed in Al-doped QDs. Characterization results revealed the relatively thicker shell in Al-doped QDs and demonstrated the presence of Al in the shell in the form of AlPOx. The increased shell thickness and narrowed fwhm indicated a reduced lattice strain at the core–shell interface in Al-doped QDs, which might result from the introduced trivalent Al3+, as it alleviated the charge mismatch at the core/shell interface. Approximately 3 g of QDs powders can be obtained through a single gram-scale one-pot preparation. The on-chip white light-emitting diode (LED), using the red and green Al-doped QDs as phosphors, exhibited a maximum power efficiency of 17.8 lm W–1 and stable CIE coordinates around (0.32, 0.35), and achieved a wide color gamut (97.4% of the NTSC color space), demonstrating the promising potential in lighting technologies.

Stabilizing CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals by Cotreatment with Inorganic and Organic Ligands

Huan Tian,Feng-Lei Jiang

Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) exhibit intrinsic chemical instability due to their ionic nature. This property renders them susceptible to structural degradation and optical performance deterioration upon exposure to various cations (both inorganic and organic ions). For instance, Cs+ can induce phase transformation and photoluminescence quenching in the CsPbBr3 NCs. In this work, we found that externally introduced metal cations exert diverse effects (classified as three types) on the structure and optical properties of CsPbBr3 NCs. Notably, certain cations, such as Zn2+ and Cd2+, can bind to the surface and shield nanocrystals against the detrimental effects of exogenous cations. The protection effects were observed by both optical spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Pretreatment with both ZnBr2 and CdBr2 significantly enhances the resistance of CsPbBr3 NCs to structurally or optically detrimental exogenous cations (Cs+). Moreover, with didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) simultaneously incorporated in this pretreatment, the pretreated CsPbBr3 NCs exhibit enhanced resistance to polar solvents (e.g., ethanol), manifesting as keeping stable and bright even when exposed to 20% (volume percentage) of ethanol. These three components (ZnBr2, CdBr2, and DDAB) exhibit complementary functions for chemical stability. This stability-preserving strategy is expected to enhance the robustness of perovskite NCs against complex chemical conditions encountered during the device fabrication process (solution processing and interlayer interface engineering) and operating environments.

Growth of InZnP/ZnS core/shell quantum dots with wide-range and refined tunable photoluminescence wavelengths

Jinyuan Zhang,Huaimin Gu

Owing to their environmentally friendly characteristic, InP-based quantum dots (QDs) show great potential in various fields as an alternative to Cd-based QDs. However, the current mainstream synthesis process, the (TMS)3P-based injection method, still faces many challenges, such as the high cost of (TMS)3P and complex temperature control. In contrast, the solvothermal method is considered to be more feasible and reproducible. Despite its potential advantages, little has been done to understand how the precursors influence the synthesis of InP QDs using the solvothermal method. In this research, InZnP/ZnS QDs were synthesized using practical phosphorus precursors (DEA)3P or (DMA)3P. Through the feasible regulation of zinc, indium, phosphorus and sulfur precursors, the band gap of the QDs could be widely and accurately tuned, and a much wider photoluminescence wavelength ranging from 484 nm to 651 nm could be achieved. Furthermore, InI3 and InBr3 contributed to the blueshift in the PL wavelengths, and the combination of (DEA)3P, (DMA)3P, n-DDT and t-DDT refined the PL wavelength with a small tuning gap of 5 nm.

Lead-Free Broadband Orange-Emitting Zero-Dimensional Hybrid (PMA)3InBr6 with Direct Band Gap

Da Chen,Shiqiang Hao,Guojun Zhou,Chenkai Deng,Quanlin Liu,Shulan Ma,Christopher Wolverton,Jing Zhao,Zhiguo Xia

Low-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides have emerged as broadband light emitters for phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). Herein, we report a new zero-dimensional (0-D) lead-free metal halide (PMA)3InBr6 [PMA+: (C6H5CH2NH3)+] that crystallizes in the monoclinic system with P21/c space group. The structure consists of slightly distorted [InBr6]3– octahedra surrounded by organic PMA+ cations. The direct band gap characteristic of (PMA)3InBr6 was demonstrated by density functional theory calculation, and its relatively wide band gap of 3.78 eV was experimentally determined. Upon 365 nm ultraviolet light excitation, (PMA)3InBr6 exhibited strong broadband orange luminescence with a full-width at half-maximum of ∼132 nm resulting from self-trapped exciton emission, and the photoluminescence quantum yield was determined to be ∼35%. A WLED fabricated by combining the orange-emitting (PMA)3InBr6, a green phosphor Ba2SiO4:Eu2+, and a blue phosphor BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ exhibited a high color-rendering index of 87.0. Our findings indicate that the organic–inorganic hybrid (PMA)3InBr6 may have potential for luminescence-based applications.

Structure and Optical Properties of Hybrid-Layered-Double Perovskites (C8H20N2)2AgMBr8 (M = In, Sb, and Bi)

Hang Ruan,Zhongnan Guo,Jiawei Lin,Kunjie Liu,Lingling Guo,Xin Chen,Jing Zhao,Quanlin Liu,Wenxia Yuan

The Pb-free hybrid-layered-double perovskites (HLDPs) have been proposed as green and stable semiconducting materials for optoelectronic devices, but the synthesized members are still limited. Here, we report the synthesis of three new HLDPs, (C8H20N2)2AgMBr8 (M = In, Sb, and Bi), by a solution method using 1,4-bis(ammoniomethyl)cyclohexane (C8H20N22+) as the organic spacing cation. All three of these HLDPs show ⟨100⟩-oriented layered structures with Ag and In/Sb/Bi order arranged in corner-sharing octahedral layers. The first-principle calculations indicate the indirect-gap nature of (C8H20N2)2AgInBr8 and (C8H20N2)2AgSbBr8, while their Bi counterpart shows a direct band gap after considering spin–orbit coupling. The band gaps obtained by diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy are 3.11, 2.60, and 2.70 eV for M = In, Sb, and Bi, respectively. (C8H20N2)2AgInBr8 shows a broadband red emission centered at 690 nm, and it is mainly attributed to the self-trapped-excitons mechanism. Our results not only provide a series of new “Pb-free” HLDPs with chemical diversity but also help us to further understand the structure–property relationships of HLDP materials.

Room-temperature synthesis of blue-emissive zero-dimensional cesium indium halide quantum dots for temperature-stable down-conversion white light-emitting diodes with a half-lifetime of 186 h

Fei Zhang,Xinzhen Ji,Wenqing Liang,Ying Li,Zhuangzhuang Ma,Meng Wang,Yue Wang,Di Wu,Xu Chen,Dongwen Yang,Xinjian Li,Chongxin Shan,Zhifeng Shi

Recently, the newly-emerging lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have attracted intensive research interest for lighting and display applications owing to their remarkable optoelectronic properties. It is regrettable that the toxicity and instability of lead largely hinder their practical applications. Here, zero-dimensional (0D) cesium indium halide (Cs3InX6) QDs were synthesized for the first time using a modified ligand-assisted reprecipitation method, and the emission wavelength can be tuned facilely via an anion exchange reaction. Typically, the Cs3InBr6 QDs showed broadband blue emission with a high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 46%. First-principles calculations were performed and temperature-dependent PL was studied to investigate the emission mechanisms of the Cs3InBr6 QDs; the 0D nature of Cs3InBr6 enhances the localization of excitons, resulting in a large exciton binding energy. It is worth noting that the strong electron–phonon coupling of Cs3InBr6 indicates that the broadband emission comes from self-trapped exciton emission. Moreover, the Cs3InX6 QDs exhibit excellent stability against moisture, ultraviolet light and heat degradation, significantly better than for conventional lead halide perovskites. Subsequently, the white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) prepared using blue-emissive Cs3InBr6 QD powder used as the phosphor showed an excellent working stability with a record half-life (T50) of 186 h. Even if the operating temperature is as high as 106.9 °C, the LED can still operate well and reach a T50 of 50 h. These results highlight the huge advantages and application potential of 0D Cs3InX6 QDs as an environmentally friendly emitter in the field of solid-state lighting.

Efficient White Light Emission of 0D Lead-Free Indium-Based Halide Perovskite and the Intermediate State Promotion Mechanism of the Nonadiabatic Transition to Self-Trapped Exciton via Antimony(III) Cation Doping

Hui Wang,Chao Wang,Yanan Wang,Mengjiao Sun,Guangjiu Zhao

In this work, we report a zero-dimensional single-component (0D) (C4H16N3)InBr6 (C4H13N3 (DETA) = diethylenetriamine), which emits white light through a simple mechanochemical method. The blue emission band at 400 nm and the yellow emission band at 550 nm are coupled to give rise to cold white emission. Theoretical calculations and spectra reveal that the photoluminescence of (DETA)InBr6 at 400 and 550 nm is attributed to free exciton and self-trapped exciton emission, respectively. It demonstrates that the nonadiabatic transition from free exciton to self-trapped exciton occurs at the ultrafast scale of <210 fs by a femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) measurement. The energy level of the antimony cation is located between the free exciton and the self-trapped exciton state as an “intermediate state”. When doping Sb3+, energy barriers are decreased and the nonradiative recombination process is suppressed, leading to an increase in the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) from 1.40% to 24.12% for (DETA)InBr6:1.5%Sb3+. In addition, the energy level of Sb3+ can facilitate the nonadiabatic transition to a self-trapped exciton, and the free exciton emission disappeared, which results in the transformation from white to yellow emission with 585 nm. These findings not only shed light on the mechanism of indium-based halide perovskite enhanced photoluminescence via an antimony(III) cation, but pave the way for the application of a simple method of mixing organic–inorganic metal halides in solid-state lighting.
