Vapor phase infiltration (VPI) facilitates the incorporation of inorganic components into organic polymers, emerging as an effective technique for fabricating organic–inorganic hybrid materials. However, the complexity of diffusion behavior during the VPI process presents challenges in studying diffusion kinetics, particularly for highly reactive precursor–polymer systems such as trimethylaluminum (TMA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). In this study, we investigate the VPI process of TMA in PEO using in situ quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM), which enables measurement of diffusion behavior and kinetics with high precision due to its high temporal resolution. Our results indicate that the VPI process consists of two main regions: a rapid diffusion process, corresponding to the initial penetration of the precursor into the film, followed by a slower relaxation process, attributed to the ongoing chemical reaction. The equivalent diffusion coefficient (De) was estimated to be on the order of 10–9 cm2/s and decreased with increasing aluminum content. Using energy application as a proof-of-concept, when optimized, VPI-modified PEO films were successfully utilized as solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for lithium metal batteries (LMBs), showcasing superior performance in mitigating lithium dendrite growth. This study offers valuable insights into the VPI process for PEO-TMA systems and provides guidance for optimizing VPI conditions to enhance the performance of advanced materials.

Incorporating plasticizers is an effective way to facilitate conduction of ions in solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). However, this conductivity enhancement often comes at the cost of reduced mechanical properties, which can make the electrolyte membrane more difficult to process and increase safety hazards. Here, a novel crosslinking strategy, wherein metal-alkoxy-terminated polymers can be crosslinked by precisely controlling the content of H 2 O as an initiator, is proposed. As a proof-of-concept, trimethylaluminum (TMA)-functionalized poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is used to demonstrate that ultrafine Al–O nanoclusters can serve as nodes to crosslink PEO chains with a wide range of molecular weights from 10 000 to 8 000 000 g mol −1 . The crosslinked polymer network can incorporate a high concentration of plasticizers, with a total weight percentage over 75%, while still maintaining excellent stretchability (4640%) and toughness (3.87 × 10 4 kJ m −3 ). The resulting electrolyte demonstrates high ionic conductivity (1.41 mS cm −1 ), low interfacial resistance toward Li metal (48.1 Ω cm 2 ), and a wide electrochemical window (>4.8 V vs Li + /Li) at 30 °C. Furthermore, the LiFePO 4 /Li battery shows stable cycle performance with a capacity retention of 98.6% (146.3 mAh g −1 ) over 1000 cycles at 1C (1C = 170 mAh g −1 ) at 30 °C.

We present the first 3D-printed continuous flow platform for the green synthesis of methylaluminoxane (MAO), the most powerful olefin polymerization co-catalyst with metallocenes. This platform consists of an on demand designed and 3D-printed liquid–liquid mixer, reactors, and a separator to enable precise control of the highly exothermic hydrolytic reaction of trimethylaluminum (TMA). Moreover, during TMA hydrolysis, solid by-products are formed and methane gas is released, both of which impede reagents blending and MAO formation, thereby making it a challenging implementation with a continuous flow strategy. By optimizing the platform configuration and reaction conditions, we obtain an MAO product with a high yield and superior co-catalytic activity, as measured by two different groups of polymerization tests. This low-volume process, which avoids the accumulation of any explosive reagents, offers long-term stability and inherent safety and facilitates scale up with multiple reactors. In addition, such an efficient, scalable, and safe flow platform preserving the mixing and heat transfer advantages delivers insights into handling other highly exothermic reactions involving the formation of solids and gases.
