Exploring the intrinsic mechanism of TOCN-based high-performance triboelectric positive material by oxygen-rich groups

Yueqian Liu,Yu Rong,Yuanjin Zeng,Jiangkai Bao,Zhuqun Shi,Chuanxi Xiong,Quanling Yang

The TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TOCN) is a green, renewable, recycled material with high performance developing natural, environmentally friendly triboelectric materials. However, the performance of natural polymer triboelectric materials needs to be further improved. In this work, a novel high-performance TOCN-based triboelectric material was prepared and enhanced by increasing oxygen-rich groups and porous structure by regulated TEMPO-mediated oxidation and direct freeze-drying process. Oxygen-rich groups and porous structures synergistically boosted the surface charge density of the material during contact separation to enhance the triboelectric output performance. The open-circuit voltage of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) was realized to be enhanced by 36 % and 84.5 %, respectively, with the power density up to 1.003 W/m 2 . Meanwhile, finite element analysis calculations further verified that the oxygen-rich groups help to increase the surface charge density of the material and make electron transfer easier. This study provides a new strategy for preparing high-performance, environmentally friendly, biocompatible biomass triboelectric materials.

Preparation of Polyaniline-Modified Cellulose/PDMS Composite Triboelectric Material and Application of Its Pretreatment in MOW Pulp

Xiaoping Sun,Yuhe Wei,Yanfen Sun,Juan Yuan,Haoqiu Chen,Zhuo Chen,Mengyang Wang,Lianxin Luo

Self-powered electronic equipment has rapidly developed in the fields of sensing, motion monitoring, and energy collection, posing a greater challenge to triboelectric materials. Triboelectric materials need to enhance their electrical conductivity and mechanical strength to address the increasing demand for stability and to mitigate unpredictable physical damage. In this study, polyaniline-modified cellulose was prepared by means of in situ polymerization and compounded with polydimethylsiloxane, resulting in a triboelectric material with enhanced strength and conductivity. The material was fabricated into a tubular triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) (G-TENG), and an electrocatalytic pretreatment of mixed office waste paper (MOW) pulp was performed using papermaking white water as the flowing liquid to improve the deinking performance. The electrical output performance of G-TENG is highest at a flow rate of 400 mL/min, producing a voltage of 22.76 V and a current of 1.024 μA. Moreover, the deinking effect of MOW was enhanced after the electrical pretreatment. This study explores the potential application of G-TENG as a self-powered sensor power supply and emphasizes its prospect as an energy collection device.

Cellulosic triboelectric materials for stable energy harvesting from hot and humid conditions

Cong Gao,Tao Liu,Bin Luo,Chenchen Cai,Wanglin Zhang,Jiamin Zhao,Jinxia Yuan,Pedram Fatehi,Chengrong Qin,Shuangxi Nie

The efficient energy harvesting from the environment provides a sustainable solution to alleviate the growing global energy crisis. However, the development of energy harvesting is limited by the challenge of maintaining stability under harsh atmospheric conditions. In this study, a novel chitosan/di-aldehyde nanocrystalline cellulose bio-based triboelectric material (CDTM) was constructed by a combined process of casting and hot pressing and applied to energy harvesting under harsh atmospheric conditions such as high temperature and high humidity. Chitosan and di-aldehyde nanocellulose were tightly bound by the Schiff base reaction, which strengthened the internal binding of CDTM making it more stable. More importantly, the CDTM based triboelectric nanogenerators (CD-TENGs) had an open circuit voltage retention of five times higher than that of paper at 99 RH% and could still retain 98% at a high-temperature environment, demonstrating excellent resistance to environmental disturbances . In addition, the CD-TENG was used as a wireless sensing terminal for smart devices to enable wireless visual sensing for stress intensity feedback and motion state detection. This work provides a novel insight into the design and preparation of triboelectric materials that withstand harsh atmospheric conditions.

Cellulose template-based triboelectric nanogenerators for self-powered sensing at high humidity

Wanglin Zhang,Xianghui Chen,Jiamin Zhao,Xinyue Wang,Xiuzhen Li,Tao Liu,Bin Luo,Ying Qin,Song Zhang,Mingchao Chi,Shuangfei Wang,Shuangxi Nie

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have ideal applications in the field of self-powered sensing thanks to their simple structure and flexible working mode. However, the weak operating properties of triboelectric materials in high humidity environments limit the wide application of TENG as sensors. To solve this problem, this work prepared hydrophilic triboelectric materials with natural cellulose as the template and used them for self-powered sensing in high humidity environments. Thanks to the interconnected network of the cellulose scaffold, the complex morphology of the material constructed in concert with Ti 3 C 2 T x during templating provides abundant adsorption sites for water molecules. Over a broad humidity range (40%−90% relative humidity (RH)), the moisture-sensitive triboelectric material can sustain outstanding performance in 150 s with high sensitivity (0.8/1%). The cellulose template-based triboelectric material transmits electrical signals to the user interface wirelessly, enabling self-powered sensing in high humidity environments. This study provides a novel strategy for the design and preparation of high-performance triboelectric materials using cellulose as a template and promotes the study of self-powered sensing in high humidity environments.

Surface Wetting Controlled by Coordination Regulation of the Cellulose Amorphous Region for Constructing High-Strength Triboelectric Materials

Fanchao Yu,Xin Wang,Pinle Zhang,Huancheng Huang,Junyu Chen,Yanhao Xu,Neng Xiong,Xinyue Nong,Xinke Yu,Xinliang Liu

Due to its remarkable advantages, such as unique multidimensional structure and excellent potential for adjustable surface chemical modification, cellulose has emerged as a highly promising triboelectric material. However, the surface of the cellulose nanofibers (CNF) is enriched with hydroxyl groups, rendering them highly hygroscopic. This property leads to a reduction in the charge density and mechanical properties of CNF materials, thus limiting their application as triboelectric materials in high-humidity environments. Therefore, in this study, an economical and straightforward ″minimally invasive intervention″ strategy was adopted. Metal ions Mx+ (such as Fe3+/Al3+) were coordinated with the hydroxyl groups in the amorphous region while causing minimal damage to the crystalline structure of cellulose as much as possible. Due to the formation of coordination bonds between the hydroxyl groups and the metal ions, the free rotation of the hydroxyl groups on the surface of cellulose was effectively restricted. Thus, it would retard the wetting rate of the cellulose surface and improve the mechanical properties and polarity of the cellulose. Compared with the pure CNF film, the mechanical properties of the Mx+-CNF films have been improved by 3.94-fold and 3.35-fold, respectively (from 32.41 to 128.81 and 108.89 MPa), and the open-circuit voltages have improved by 1.9-fold and 2.9-fold, respectively (from 15 to 23 and 36 V). Even at 90% RH, they continue to demonstrate good cyclic stability and reliability. This research provides an approach for cellulose to harvest energy in a high-humidity environment.

Self-Healing and Toughness Triboelectric Materials Enabled by Dynamic Nanoconfinement Quenching

Tong Zhao,Jinlong Wang,Yanhua Liu,Xiuzhen Li,Yayu Bai,Bin Luo,Mingchao Chi,Song Zhang,Tao Liu,Yuzheng Shao,Guoli Du,Puyang Zhang,Zhaomeng Liu,Shuangfei Wang,Shuangxi Nie

Self-healing materials that integrate excellent mechanical properties and high healing efficiency meet the requirements of flexible electronic sensors for mechanical flexibility and reliability. In the field of wearable devices, they are of great significance for improving the stability of the equipment and reducing the frequency of replacement. However, the high strength of materials often limits their self-healing ability. When damage occurs, it will hinder the microstructural adjustment and fluidity of the material at the damaged site, thus negatively affecting the activation and execution of the self-healing mechanism. In this study, a strength-toughness and room-temperature self-healing triboelectric material is prepared by the dynamic nanoconfinement effect and the quenching effect of ethanol (referred to as the DNCQ strategy). The quenching effect of ethanol improves the aggregation of nanocluster phase, and the constructed nanoconfined network skillfully balances the contradiction between mechanical properties and self-healing ability. The obtained triboelectric material has high tensile strength (27.1 MPa), toughness (97.9 MJ m −3 ), and excellent healing efficiency (88.6%). The self-powered pressure distribution sensing array based on triboelectric materials can accurately reflect the pressure distribution of the object, which has potential application prospects in the field of wearable devices.
