Stainless steel mesh (SSM) membranes demonstrate exceptional oil-water separation flux and efficiency, yet suffer from compromised durability due to oil fouling, wear, and chemical corrosion under prolonged usage. To enhance robustness, a method for SSM preparation employs triple cross-linking of phytic acid (PA), polydopamine (PDA), and polyethyleneimine (PEI), capitalizing on the complexation of hydrophilic phosphate groups of PA onto SSM surface by Fe(III) released from SSM during high-temperature alkaline treatment and liberated during PA/PEI immersion. A PDA/PA dual crosslinking layer was constructed on the SSM surface with PDA and PA, overcoming limitations of PDA in alkaline conditions and single crosslinking sites. Triple cross-linking via Michael or Schiff base reactions, metal coordination, and electrostatic interaction enhances membrane robustness. Tuning PEI concentration chelated with PA controls PA/PEI nanoparticle dispersion and aggregation, enabling phase separation to form papillate superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic membranes with micro/nano-structuring. These membranes achieve a flux of 67750.56 L·m −2 ·h −1 and 99.99 % efficiency, remaining reusable for 50 cycles. They exhibit remarkable durability, withstanding significant physical wear and chemical corrosion. After 40 sandpaper abrasions, the membranes maintain a flux of 61664.89 L·m −2 ·h −1 and 99.86 % efficiency. Thus, these superhydrophilic SSM with papillary micro/nanostructures demonstrate exceptional stability and corrosion resistance.

Silicon serves as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, silicon suffers from low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) and poor cycling performance due to large volume change, lithium consumption, the formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), and low conductivity. To improve the performance of silicon anodes, this work proposed a new strategy for the design of silicon electrode binders based on β -cyclodextrin, citric acid, and sodium alginate, where a binder with a chemical/ionic/hydrogen-bonded triple-crosslinked network was constructed in situ during electrode preparation. The binder with a triple-crosslinked network provided the silicon electrode with a high binding strength, excellent ion/electron permeation network, and robust interfacial protective layer, providing better tolerate volume changes, and inhibiting the interfacial side reactions and the formation of solid-electrolyte interphase, as well as accelerating Li + diffusion during the charge/discharge processes. The prepared silicon electrodes had a higher ICE (92.8%), better cycling stability (1429 mAh/g after 400 cycles at 0.5 C), and superior rate performance (1274 mAh/g at 4 C). This work may guide the design of high-performance binders for silicon electrodes.

With the rapid development of flexible electronics technology, high-performance flexible sensors have shown great potential in wearable devices and human-computer interaction fields. In this study, a hydrogel (PMAGZ) reinforced by gelatin and Zn 2+ was prepared using a one-pot method, which formed a triple-bonded cross-linked network structure through covalent, hydrogen, and ligand bonds to exhibit excellent mechanical properties and sensing characteristics, and can be applied to multimodal sensors and handwriting recognition. The introduction of gelatin and Zn 2+ strengthens the cross-linked structure inside the hydrogel, which can effectively improve the tensile strength, strain, and toughness of the hydrogel. Additionally, the addition of ethylene glycol and lithium chloride endowed the hydrogel with good frost resistance and electrical conductivity. The PMAGZ hydrogel sensor has a fast response time, high sensitivity, wide sensing range, and excellent fatigue resistance, and is capable of accurately monitoring human movements and handwriting information. Combined with machine learning algorithms (ML), the sensor can effectively recognize different handwritten letters with an accuracy of 99.8 %. This study provides a new approach for developing high-performance, multifunctional flexible sensors, which have broad application prospects in flexible wearable devices and human-computer interaction fields.

Applications in the harsh environment require hydrogels with ultra-stiffness, toughness, and stretchability. However, it remains a challenge to increase the elastic modulus without sacrificing the maximum elongation of hydrogels, because of the trade-off between stiffness and extensibility. Inspired by the crosslinking hierarchy of mussel byssus cuticle, here, we report a strategy to fabricate an ultra-stiff, tough and stretchable triple-crosslinked (TC) hydrogel. The polymer is crosslinked by chemical crosslinker at first, subsequently by introducing a polyphenolic compound, tannic acid (TA), and metal ions. The hydrogen-bond-based network between the polymer and TA works as an extensible and energy-dissipative network, mimicking the matrix of the cuticle, while the higher crosslinked domains formed by the coordinate bonds between TA and metal ions contribute to the stiffness. The triple-crosslinked hydrogel exhibits two orders of magnitude increase in stiffness (E = 58 MPa), but without sacrificing the maximum elongation (ε = 850%), compared with those of metal-free hydrogels (E = 0.18 MPa, and ε = 860%). The combination of ultra-stiffness, toughness, and stretchability in hydrogels is successfully achieved through leveraging the hierarchically cross-linked network based on hydrogen bonding and coordination bonding. Moreover, utilizing the wide distribution of bonding strength of coordination interaction, the mechanical properties of triple-crosslinked hydrogels can be manipulated by using different kinds of catechol-metal coordination.

Electrospun polyimide (PI) nanofiber membranes have served as promising separators for safe lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their excellent thermal stability. However, electrospun PI nanofiber membranes have excessively large pores and low mechanical strength, which have been shown to be unsuitable for direct utilization as LIB separators. To solve these issues, we proposed a novel electrospun PI nanofiber membrane obtained using a triple cross-linking strategy, including precalendering, microsolvent dissolution, and chemical imidization. The precalendering process, as a prerequisite, densified the poly(amic acid) (PAA) nanofiber membrane and followed by microsolvent dissolution and chemical imidization, which provided synergistic cross-linking effects. This resulted in a mutual anchoring effect of the ultralong molecular chains at the cross-linking interface, forming a robust cross-linking structure and efficient imidization transition. As a result, the mechanical properties of the samples significantly improved, while the tensile strength increased from 9.9 to 95.5 MPa. Furthermore, as the pressing degree of the membranes increased, the electrolyte uptake, ionic conductivity, and capacity decreased; however, the ability to inhibit lithium dendrite growth and uniformly produce solid electrolyte interfaces (SEIs) increased. Compared to the noncross-linked PI membrane, the PI membrane obtained using the triple cross-linking strategy had a stable interface with the lithium metal electrodes and a high-capacity retention rate. This robust PI nanofiber membrane could serve as a promising replacement for traditional polyolefin separators in high-performance LIBs.

Regenerated cellulose fibers has attracted increasing attention for high-grade textile raw materials and industrial textiles, but the low mechanical property caused by differences in regenerated raw materials and production levels limits its commercial application in the product diversity. Herein, we proposed a novel triple-crosslinking strategy by coupling with hydrogen bonds, chemical crosslinking, and internal mineralization from multiple pulsed vapor phase infiltration (MPI) to improve the mechanical performance of regenerated cellulose fibers. A binary solvent composed of ionic liquid (IL) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is used to dissolve waste cotton textile and then wet spinning. Dual-crosslinking is firstly achieved by coupling glutaraldehyde (GA) and cellulose reaction. Subsequently, a metal oxide is intentionally infiltrated into inner cellulosic through MPI technology to form a third form of crosslinking, accompanied by the ultra-thin metal oxide nano-layer onto the surface of regenerated cellulose fibers. Results showed that the triple-crosslinking strategy has increased the tensile stress of the fiber by 43.57 % to 287.03 MPa. In all, triple-crosslinking strategy provides a theoretical basis and technical approach for the reinforcement of weak fibers in waste cotton recycling, which is expected to accelerate the development of the waste textile recycling industry and promote of the added-value of regenerated products.

Recently, research on hydrogel materials with a porous structure and superior water absorption capabilities significantly grown. However, the hydrogel under gravity-driven separation conditions often exhibit an unstable pore structure, poor mechanical properties, and limited functionality. To this end, this work presents a novel approach that combines a macro-micro double bionic strategy with a triple crosslinking method to develop a multifunctional alginate composite hydrogel filter (2%-SA-κ-CG-PVA-Ca 2+ , 2%-SKP-Ca 2+ for short) with a stable pore structure and superior mechanical properties, which possessed an umbrella-shaped structure resembling that of jellyfish. The 2%-SKP-Ca 2+ filter was synthesized using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a stable structure-directing agent, and sodium alginate (SA) and κ-carrageenan (κ-CG) as polymer hydrogels. The distinctive umbrella-shaped hydrogel of 2%-SKP-Ca 2+ filter, formed through the triple crosslinking method, overcomes the limitations of unstable pore structure and poor durability seen in hydrogels prepared by traditional crosslinking methods. Furthermore, the utilization of the 2%-SKP-Ca 2+ filter in water treatment demonstrates its good selective permeability, excellent resistance to fouling, and extended longevity, which enables it to simultaneously achieve the multifunctional water purification and the coating of multi-substrate anti-fouling coatings. Therefore, not only does this research provide an efficient, multifunctional, highly pollution-resistant preparation method for designing a new filter, but it also confirms the application prospect of the macro-micro dual bionic strategy developed in this study in complex water treatment.
