Luminescence nanothermometers have garnered considerable attention due to their noncontact measurement, high spatial resolution, and rapid response. However, many nanothermometers employing single-mode measurement encounter challenges regarding their relative sensitivity. Herein, a unique class of tunable upconversion (UC) and downshifting (DS) luminescence covering the visible to near-infrared range (400–1700 nm) is reported, characterized by the superior Tm3+, Ho3+, and Er3+ emissions induced by efficient energy transfer. The outstanding negative thermal expansion characteristic of ScF3 nanocrystals has been found to guide excitation energy toward the relevant emitting states in the Yb3+–Ho3+–Tm3+-codoped system, consequently resulting in remarkable near-infrared III (NIR-III) luminescence at ∼1625 nm (Tm3+:3F4 → 3H6 transition), which in turn presents numerous opportunities for designing multimode ratiometric luminescence thermometry. Furthermore, by facilitating phonon-assisted energy transfer in Er3+–Ho3+-codoped systems, the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) of 4I13/2 of Er3+ and 5I6 of Ho3+ in ScF3:Yb3+/Ho3+/Er3+ exhibits a strong temperature dependence, enabling NIR-II/III luminescence thermometry with superior thermal sensitivity and resolution (Sr = 0.78% K–1, δT = 0.64 K). These findings not only underscore the distinctive and ubiquitous attributes of lanthanide ion-doped nanomaterials but also hold significant implications for crafting luminescence thermometers with unparalleled sensitivity.

Rare earth (RE 3+ )-doped phosphors generally suffer from thermal quenching, in which their photoluminescence (PL) intensities decrease at high temperatures. Herein, we report a class of unique two-dimensional negative-thermal-expansion phosphor of Sc 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Yb/Er. By virtue of the reduced distances between sensitizers and emitters as well as confined energy migration with increasing the temperature, a 45-fold enhancement of green upconversion (UC) luminescence and a 450-fold enhancement of near-infrared downshifting (DS) luminescence of Er 3+ are achieved upon raising the temperature from 298 to 773 K. The thermally boosted UC and DS luminescence mechanism is systematically investigated through in situ temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction and PL dynamics. Moreover, the luminescence lifetime of 4 I 13/2 of Er 3+ in Sc 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Yb/Er displays a strong temperature dependence, enabling luminescence thermometry with the highest relative sensitivity of 12.3%/K at 298 K and low temperature uncertainty of 0.11 K at 623 K. These findings may gain a vital insight into the design of negative-thermal-expansion RE 3+ -doped phosphors for versatile applications.

Series of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ -codoped Gd 2 Mo 3 O 12 (GMO:Er 3+ /2 x Yb 3+ ) microparticles with dual-mode luminescence were fabricated with the assistance of sol-gel method. The phase structure, morphological information, upconversion (UC) and down-shifting luminescence properties of the final products were systematically investigated. At 980 nm light irradiation, strong UC emissions rise in all the products and their intensities depend on the dopant concentration, where the optimum status occurs at x = 0.25 and the two-photon capture procedure results in the UC emission mechanism. Besides, excited at 378 nm, the down-shifting photoluminescence is also gained in resulting samples. By means of the fluorescence intensity ratio technique, the thermometric properties of the studied samples were investigated through analyzing the diverse thermal quenching features of the green emissions from thermally coupled levels of Er 3+ . When the UC emission is selected, the maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of the GMO:Er 3+ /2 x Yb 3+ microparticles are 0.0076 and 1.15% K −1 , respectively, whereas they shift to 0.0036 and 0.89% K −1 , respectively, when the down-shifting photoluminescence is adopted. Note that, the sensor sensitivities of developed microparticles are related to the luminescence mode, while they do not depend on Yb 3+ content. These results suggest that the GMO:Er 3+ /2 x Yb 3+ microparticles are promising thermosensitive luminescent materials for optical thermometry and their thermometric features can be tuned through changing luminescence mode.

In this work, uniform and monodisperse Sr2YF7 spheres were successfully synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal route without employing any surfactant. Particularly, a well-defined morphology of Sr2YF7 crystals ranging from spherical to octahedral shape was first achieved by adjusting the pH values. In addition, the spherical products doped with 6% Ln3+ (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Sm, Gd, and Dy) show different sizes ranging from 300 to 600 nm. The Sr2YF7 crystals also exhibit excellent multicolor DS/UC luminescence properties after doping with different Ln3+ ions. Energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ was observed in Sr2YF7 crystals; the Sr2YF7:Dy3+ crystals showed nearly white light emission under UV excitation; Sr2YF7:Yb3+/Er3+/Tm3+ crystals could produce pure white light with a CIE color coordinate of (0.3123, 0.3005) by controlling the doping concentrations of Er3+ and Tm3+ ions under 980 nm excitation. The as-prepared phosphors may potentially serve as light, color displays and markers in biological imaging.

Metal ion doping is the most viable method to modulate the optical properties of lead-free Cs2AgInCl6 double perovskite (DP) nanocrystals (NCs). However, despite the fact that doping multiple cations can allow for emission color tuning, their random distribution into the perovskite matrix poses severe limitations caused by uncontrollable and adverse energy interactions between the dopants, resulting in poor emission color purity and photoluminescence (PL) quenching. To address this issue, we designed Cs2AgInCl6-based core–shell NCs doped with different metal ions in the two layers via an epitaxial growth strategy, with the aim to spatially separate the diverse optically active centers. We selected Cs2AgInCl6:Bi as the core and Cs2AgInCl6:Yb, Er as the shell and successfully constructed Cs2AgInCl6:Bi@Cs2AgInCl6:Yb, Er core–shell NCs. The so-designed core–shell NCs allow for non-interacting dual-modal luminescence (upconversion/downshifting) yielding not only broadband self-trapping exciton orange emission under ultraviolet (370 nm) excitation but also upconversion green light emission under near-infrared (980 nm) excitation, so far unprecedented in DP NCs. Taking advantage of the high photostability and stability against moisture bestowed by the shell coating, we demonstrate that the resulting core–shell DP NCs can be successfully employed as luminescent ink for dual-mode anti-counterfeiting labels. These results not only provide a novel design strategy for multi-emissive lead-free NCs, but can also represent a milestone to realize controllable luminescent materials for anti-counterfeiting and information storage.

Currently, FIR-based luminescent nanothermometry has aroused wide concern for its promising applications in fast-moving objects, harsh environments and microscopic temperature. Synchronously promoting the absolute and relative sensitivities of optical thermometers is one of the significant issues at present. In this work, a new nanothermometry strategy to possess both high absolute and relative sensitivities have been proposed by coupling of thermally-coupled-levels-based technique with non-thermally-coupled-levels method in the core-shell designed nanomaterials . Following this strategy, the core-shell-structured NaGdF 4 :Yb,Er@ NaYF 4 :Ce,Tb,Eu nanocrystals have been successfully prepared. Remarkably, the adverse cross-relaxation among different activators is extremely suppressed owing to the spatial separation of Er 3+ and Eu 3+ ,Tb 3+ activators, being conducive to the realization of both intense green upconverting emissions and yellow downshifting luminescence. Moreover, the temperature-sensitive dual-mode luminescent behaviors of core-shell nanomaterials are systematically studied to probe the possible application in FIR-related luminescent thermometry. Specially, the thermally-coupled-levels-based FIR of Er 3+ : 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 transition to Er 3+ : 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 one and non-thermally-coupled-levels-based FIR of Eu 3+ : 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition to Tb 3+ : 5 D 4 → 7 F 6 one are proved to be applicable as temperature probes, leading to the achievement of dual-mode temperature sensing. Using the pre-designed core@shell nanoarchitectures, the absolute sensitivity can reach up to 1.02% K −1 based on Eu 3+ ,Tb 3+ Stokes emissions and the relative sensitivity could reach as high as 1.12% K −1 based on Er 3+ anti-Stokes luminescence. We believe that this study provides a valid approach for developing high-performance optical nanothermometers.

Phosphors with rare earth (RE) ions are widely applied to optical temperature measurements. Moreover, the near-infrared (NIR) emission of phosphors has potential applications in the biological field. Herein, Gd2O3:x%Nd3+/Yb3+(0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.8) samples are successfully synthesized by the sol–gel method, and their phase and morphology are characterized. The XRD data are refined by Rietveld. Under 980 nm continuous wave (CW) laser excitation, the upconversion (UC) and downshift (DS) emissions are studied. The temperature sensing performances of thermally coupled levels (TCLs) and non-thermally coupled levels (non-TCLs) of Gd2O3: Nd3+/Yb3+ phosphors are investigated through the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technology. In the temperature range of 303–523 K, the maximum relative sensitivity of I761 nm/I550 nm reaches 6.54% K−1, which is based on non-TCLs. At the same time, the maximum relative sensitivity of I761 nm/I1000 nm–1500 nm reaches 3.13%. In addition, the influence of the laser induced heating (LIH) effect is studied. Compared with square wave (SW) pumping, the relative sensitivity would decrease at CW excitation. Finally, the durability and temperature uncertainty are also discussed. The results prove that the Gd2O3:Nd3+/Yb3+ samples present higher relative sensitivity and durability and lower temperature uncertainty in the biological window. Therefore, the phosphors can be used as optical thermometers in the biological field.

With the rapid development of science and technology, the high-security-level anti-counterfeiting technique is essential for ensuring property or information security. In this work, we prepared micron NaYTiO 4 : Bi/Er (NYT: Bi/Er) phosphors with integrating up-conversion (UC) photoluminescence, down-shifting (DS) emission, phosphorescence and photochromism (PC) performances for advanced multiple anti-counterfeiting application. Owing to the abundant energy levels of Er 3+ ions, the UC and DS luminescence behaviors are anticipated. Specifically, the yellow-green emission of Er 3+ ions can be observed upon 980 nm excitation, and the bright green emission is demonstrated under 281 or 254 nm excitation due to the energy transitions of Er 3+ ions and the energy transfer process from Bi 3+ to Er 3+ ions. Besides, the introduction of Bi 3+ ions generates defect levels in the matrix and thus leads to phosphorescence. Furthermore, the repeatable PC performance could be triggered by the 365 nm irradiation and vanished with 450 nm illumination or thermal stimulation. To verify the practical usability of NYT: Bi/Er phosphors on anti-counterfeiting applications, some experiments are designed and successfully executed. It is believed that the NYT: Bi/Er phosphors can be a promising candidate for high-security-level multiple anti-counterfeiting.
