Effect of titanium dioxide (TiO2) distribution and minute amounts of carbon black on the opacity of PVDF based white composite films

Tongbing Li,Dekun Sheng,Zhengrong Xiong,Xiumei Gao,Fance Ji,Yuming Yang

There is a contradiction in making completely opaque and white plastic film with a required high TiO 2 filling fraction, which resulted in inefficient pigment utilization and high cost. Two methods were used here to overcome the contradiction. Firstly, TiO 2 was grafted with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by atom transfer radical polymerization to improve the pigment dispersion in poly(vinylidene) fluoride (PVDF). Secondly, minute amounts of carbon black (CB) were added into the PMMA- g -TiO 2 /PVDF system to enhance opacity and decrease TiO 2 fraction. The structure, morphology, and properties of PMMA- g -TiO 2 hybrid particles and composite films were investigated by FTIR, TEM, TGA, SEM, DMA, covering power meter, and UV/VIS spectrophotometer, etc. It was observed that PMMA- g -TiO 2 was dispersed uniformly as individual particles in PVDF due to the good compatibility between PMMA and PVDF. Therefore, the opacity of PMMA- g -TiO 2 /PVDF films was markedly higher than unmodified-TiO 2 /PVDF ones. Adding minute amounts of CB can significantly increase the opacity of the thin film due to its absorption effect on decreasing light transmittance. The contrast ratio (CR) of the PMMA- g -TiO 2 /PVDF film with 20 μm thickness and 25 vol % TiO 2 was 97.67%, lower than the critical CR 98% for a complete opacity, however, the CR of sample with 10 vol % TiO 2 was 98.1% as the CB concentration was 2 × 10 −4 g/cm 3 , saved more than 15% TiO 2 . We proposed that a critical thickness d 0 existed for the CB/PMMA- g -TiO 2 /PVDF composite films, under which the light reflectance increased as a function of thickness, otherwise, the reflectance kept constant. Besides, d 0 could be decreased by increasing CB concentration. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133 , 43064.

Liposome-camouflaged iodinated mesoporous silica nanoparticles with high loading capacity, high hemodynamic stability, high biocompatibility and high radiopacity

Naikuan Fu,Ao Li,Jing Zhang,Peng Zhang,Hong Zhang,Shicheng Yang,Jianhua Zhang

Due to their low osmolality and high tolerability , the highly water-soluble nonionic iodinated contrast agents, such as Ioversol (IV), are widely used as clinical agents for CT imaging. However, their clinical applications still are severely limited by the rapid renal excretion , serious adverse effects especially contrast-induced nephropathy and inefficient targetability. Various nanocarriers have demonstrated tremendous potential for achieving high imaging efficiency and low side effects. However, few nanoparticulate contrast agents can simultaneously integrate the desirable functions for imaging, including high loading capacity of iodine, high structure stability for systemic circulation , high biocompatibility and high radiopacity. Herein, we designed and prepared a kind of new radiopaque liposome-camouflaged iodinated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (OIV-MSNs@Liposomes) as contrast agents in CT imaging. Their composition, structure, morphology, biocompatibility and physicochemical properties as well as in vitro radiopacity were investigated in detail. The results indicated that OIV-MSNs@Liposomes can integrate their individual advantages of liposomes and MSNs, thus exhibiting great potential for use in the CT imaging. Considering the simple preparation process and readily available starting materials as well as enhanced biosafety and high performance in X-ray attenuation, the strategy reported here offers a versatile route to efficiently deliver highly water-soluble nonionic iodinated contrast agents for enhanced CT imaging, which are unattainable by traditional means.

Modification of SiO2 Nanoparticle-Decorated TiO2 Nanocomposites with Silane Coupling Agents for Enhanced Opacity in Blue Light-Curable Ink

Guangyuan Xie,Lei Wang,Qiuyu Zhu,Liang Xu,Kaili Song,Zhicheng Yu

To improve inkjet printing performance, surface single encapsulation of nano-TiO2 particles has widely been reported. However, surface single encapsulation has a limited effect on improving the inkjet printing performance of nano-TiO2 particles. In this study, SiO2 nanoparticle-decorated TiO2 (SiO2/TiO2) nanocomposites modified with silane coupling agents were obtained by a two-step method to improve the inkjet printing performance. The effects of different Na2SiO3 concentrations on the morphology, particle size, and opacity performance of SiO2/TiO2 nanocomposites were studied. The results showed that when the molar ratio of Na2SiO3 to TiO2 was 0.06:1, SiO2/TiO2 nanocomposites showed the best dispersibility and the best opacity performance. Then, the effect of different silane coupling agents on the properties of curing films was investigated. The results showed that the properties (opacity performance, tensile properties, thermal stability, and color fastness) of the KH570-SiO2/TiO2 nanocomposite curing film were greatly improved. The characteristic peaks in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that SiO2 nanoparticles were anchored at the nano-TiO2 particle surface via Si–O–Ti bonds, and silane coupling agents were successfully grafted onto the SiO2/TiO2 nanocomposite surface via Si–O–Si/Si–O–Ti bonds. In addition, it was verified that the double bonds of KH570-SiO2/TiO2 nanocomposites participated in the photopolymerization of oligomers/monomers by FTIR.

Impact of melting point of palm oil on mechanical and water barrier properties of gelatin-palm oil emulsion film

Jingdong Xiao,Wenhang Wang,Kun Wang,Yaowei Liu,Anjun Liu,Shaojing Zhang,Yana Zhao

In order to explore the effects of oil's melting points on film performance, a gelatin emulsion film with different degrees (8°, 18°, 24°, 33° and 44°, referring to different melting points) of commercial palm oils were fabricated and its properties were investigated. A variety of size distribution (d 4,3 and d 3,2 ) of oil droplets in film-forming emulsion was observed, with 24° oil being the smallest and most regular. As expected, the addition of palm oil obviously decreased film strength but increased elongation, depending upon oil degree. Among them, more importantly, strength of the film containing 24° palm oil was close to that of the pure gelatin film, coexisting with a satisfied elongation value. Furthermore, reducing water vapor permeability was observed in all emulsion films, wherein film containing 24° oil was lowest. Increasing degrees of palm oil led to an increase in film's opacity and a variation of film color, as well as thermal stability. The aforementioned different effects were consistent with microstructure of the emulsion films, where the film with 24° oil droplets was smoother and compact. In conclusion, the melting point of palm oil had a remarkable influence on properties of the resulting emulsion film, mainly being attributed to the differences in size and related state of oil droplets in emulsion during film processing.

Quantifying mechanical opacity as a novel indicator for single-cell phenotyping via integrated dynamic mechanical compression and impedance flow cytometry

Shan-Shan Li,Chun-Dong Xue,Si-Yu Hu,Yong-Jiang Li,Xu-Qu Hu,Zhuo Yang,Kai-Rong Qin

A comprehensive understanding of cellular mechanical heterogeneity is essential for identifying phenotypic variations. Impedance flow cytometry offers a high-throughput, label-free approach to assess single-cell electrical properties, yet current methods focus primarily on undeformed cells and overlook mechanical perturbations that may alter cytoskeletal structure and membrane behavior. Here, we present an integrated system that combines controlled mechanical compression with impedance measurement to quantify mechanical opacity—an electrical metric reflecting membrane permeability under dynamic deformation. This parameter correlates with cytoskeletal integrity and reveals how mechanical stimuli influence electrical responses. Theoretical modeling shows that membrane permittivity and conductivity critically shape frequency-dependent impedance, supporting the use of dual-frequency (500 kHz and 5 MHz) measurements to probe both intra- and extracellular properties. We define a four-parameter feature set (Rsqu, Rsti1, Rsti2, Rrelax) to capture impedance changes during deformation and relaxation, offering a compact and interpretable mechanical signature. Using this system, we demonstrate distinct mechanical opacity profiles among three human cancer cell lines (HeLa, SW1990, BxPC-3), reflecting their inherent biomechanical differences. Fluorescence assays confirm that lower mechanical opacity corresponds to increased membrane permeability, linking electrical measurements to underlying structural changes. Our work establishes mechanical opacity as a dynamic, label-free marker for single-cell mechanics, bridging mechanical stimulation and electrical detection. This approach expands the capability of impedance flow cytometry for applications in cell classification, drug screening, and disease diagnostics.
