Aiming to satisfy the requirements of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) for flexible displays, 2-[[[6-[3-(6-methyl-4-oxo-1,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-yl)ureido]hexyl]carbamoyl] oxy]ethyl acrylate (Upy-HDI-HEA) was synthesized, and a series of dual cross-linking EHA-co-HEA copolymers with multiple hydrogen bonds were prepared. The effects of the Upy-HDI-HEA content on the EHA-co-HEA copolymers’ chemical structure, thermal properties, viscoelasticity, mechanical properties, and adhesion performance were comprehensively investigated via in situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mechanical testing, and adhesion testing. The multiple hydrogen bonds acting as strong physical cross-linking enhance the deformation resistance of EHA-co-HEA copolymers. Moreover, compared to chemical cross-linking, the multiple hydrogen bonds allow for a certain degree of unhindered movement and energy dissipation, which benefits the flexibility and peel resistance of EHA-co-HEA copolymers. Consequently, relatively low storage moduli and glass transition temperatures were observed in all EHA-co-HEA copolymers. Young’s modulus, recovery rate, and cyclic stability of EHA-co-HEA copolymers increase with the rising Upy-HDI-HEA content. Also, the loop tack, 180° peel strength, and shear strength of EHA-co-HEA copolymers significantly improved, showing a better adhesion performance than commercial PSAs.

The development of adhesive tapes that can be applied at high temperature is a major challenge for pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs). To date, the heat resistance of PSAs has not been investigated in sufficient details. In this study, based on the relationship between curing structures and properties, a series of acrylic PSAs with excellent heat resistance were prepared. Commercial zirconium acetylacetonate (ZrACA), desmodur L75 (L75), and N , N , N ′, N ′-tetrakis(2,3-epoxypropyl)- m -xylene-α,α′-diamine (GA240) were employed as heat-curing agents. Trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) was used as ultraviolet (UV)-curing agent to form semi-interpenetration polymer network structures after UV exposure. The influences of different curing agents on the thermal stability, adhesion performance, gel fraction, and viscoelastic of PSAs were explored. The results showed that the PSAs cured by L75, GA240, and TMPTA exhibited excellent heat resistance. Especially, when the content of L75 was 1.0 wt %, the PSAs could be peeled off substrate without residues on substrate surface after treatment at 170 °C for 4 h, while the nonmodified acrylic PSAs possessed residues after treatment from 110 °C. The cured PSAs adhesive performance was evaluated showing maximum 180° peel strength of 16.7 N/25 mm comparable to current PSAs. These resulting PSAs showed high heat resistance and they are suitable for a broad range of special fields. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2019 , 136 , 47310.

Acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are widely used in transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS). However, there was little research about the quantitative relationship between drug release and drug-PSAs interaction. In this study, five acrylic PSAs with different molar fraction of carboxyl group were designed and synthesized. Propranolol (PRO) was used as model drug to evaluate release profiles in the PSAs in vitro and in vivo . The drug release percent in the PSAs were 81.66, 78.22, 51.66, 21.81 and 11.73%, and their release behaviors were decreased with carboxyl group content of PSAs. Furthermore, it was found that quantity of carboxyl group of PSAs was equal to residual drug by the quantitative determination. In addition, the ionic interaction between PRO and PSAs was confirmed by FT-IR and MDSC results qualitatively. Using the FT-IR, MDSC, Flory-Huggins interaction parameters and molecular dynamic simulation, interaction strength between drug and PSAs was determined quantitatively, which demonstrated that the drug release amount decreased linearly with interaction strength. Based on above results, we proposed that the PRO was possibly binding to the carboxyl group of PSAs one-by-one, which provided references for the accurate design of TDDS.

The development of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) with good flame retardancy is of great importance for the optoelectronic, automobile, and aircraft applications. However, a well-known problem is that conventional flame retardants, while imparting good flame retardant properties to acrylic PSAs, compromise the cohesion and result in the unsatisfactory shear and peel strengths. In this work, flame-retarded acrylic PSAs with improved shear and peel strengths were successfully prepared by constructing a tight non-covalent crosslinking network that effectively counteract the negative effect of flame retardants on cohesion. In addition, the combination of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) and SiO 2 increases the flame retardant effectiveness and reduces the overall required loading of flame retardants. As an example, when the amount of acrylic acid (AA) was 35 wt%, acrylic PSA containing 12.7 wt% DMMP and 2.5 wt% SiO 2 particles showed well-balanced adhesive properties and flame retardancy, with a shear strength of 3600 min and a peel strength of 15.0 N/25 mm, as well as a UL-94 V-0 rating. Meanwhile, it exhibited a high transmittance of above 90%. Furthermore, TG-FTIR results confirmed that the flame-retarded behaviors occurred in vapor phase.

Though acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are widely used in transdermal drug delivery system , molecular details of drug-PSA interactions, PSA molecular mobility variations and their influences on drug skin permeation are unclear. In this study, three classes of acrylic PSAs containing hydroxyl (AAOH), carboxyl (AACOOH) and non-functional group (AAnone) were synthesized. Their abilities of controlling drug release were evaluated using propranolol (PRO) and zaltoprofen (ZAL) in vitro and in vivo . Interaction details were identified by FT-IR, solid-state NMR and molecular modeling. Thermodynamic activity of drug and strength of drug-PSA interaction were characterized using miscibility study. PSA mobility was characterized using thermal analysis and rheology study. Thus, ionic interaction reduced the thermodynamic activity of PRO and mobility of AACOOH, which made PRO-AACOOH obtain a significant lower bioavailability (11.8 ± 0.7%) than these of PRO-AAnone (40.7 ± 2.5%) and PRO-AAOH (42.3 ± 2.9%). Though thermodynamic activity of ZAL in AACOOH was lower than that in AAOH due to the hydrogen bonding , bioavailability of ZAL-AAOH (19.0 ± 4.1%) exhibited no significant difference with ZAL-AACOOH (15.4 ± 2.8%), mainly because AAOH mobility was decreased by ZAL. In conclusion, the strength, types and involved functional groups of drug-PSA interactions were identified. On this basis, it was found that different control patterns of drug release were not only caused by the thermodynamic or kinetic hindrance effects of drug-PSA interactions, but also influenced by the interactions introduced PSA mobility variations, which was an innovative mechanism of controlled release in transdermal patch . The conclusions extended our understanding about the mechanism of controlled drug release of drug-in-adhesive patch. In addition, they contributed to the design of TDDS and custom acrylic PSAs.

Though ion-pair strategy has been employed as an effective and promising method for controlling transdermal delivery of drugs, investigations into the underlying mechanisms involved in the controlled release process of ion-pairs are still limited. In the present study, a brand-new controlled release system combining acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive containing carboxyl group (carboxylic PSA) with ion-pair strategy was developed, and the molecular mechanism of ion-pair releasing from carboxylic PSA was systemically elucidated. Bisoprolol (BSP) and bisoprolol-lauric acid ion-pair (BSP-C 12 ) were chosen as model drugs. Carboxylic PSA was designed and synthesized. Effect of ion-pair on controlling BSP release from carboxylic PSA was evaluated by in vitro drug release study, in vitro skin permeation study and pharmacokinetic study. Molecular mobility of PSA, along with the strength of drug-PSA interaction was evaluated by thermal analysis and dielectric spectroscopy . Molecular details of drug-PSA interaction were identified by FTIR , XPS and Raman. Roles of drug-PSA interaction in the controlled release process were clarified by molecular modeling. Results showed that BSP-C 12 patch demonstrated a controlled release drug plasma profile, with lower C max (193 ± 63 ng/mL) and longer MRT (19.9 ± 3.4 h) compared to BSP patch ( C max,BSP = 450 ± 28 ng/mL, MRT BSP = 7.9 ± 0.9 h). Besides, there was no significant difference between the AUC of BSP-C 12 and BSP patch. It turned out that instead of PSA molecular mobility, molecular interaction between ion-pair and PSA played a dominant role in the controlled release process of BSP: as illustrated by FTIR , Raman and molecular docking, the ionic interaction between BSP-C 12 and PSA determined the amount of BSP released, namely the thermodynamic process; while the doubly ionic hydrogen bond between BSP-C 12 and PSA-COO – controlled the release rate, which was the kinetic process. In conclusion, it was found that the doubly ionic hydrogen bond formed between carboxylic PSA and ion-pair controlled the release profile of BSP, which broadened our understanding about the molecular mechanisms involved in ion-pair controlled release transdermal patches and contributed to the design of controlled release TDDS .

The objective of this study was to investigate the controlled release effect of various polar functional groups in acrylate pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) on permeation enhancers (PE), as well as to elucidate the disparities in their enhancing effects under such circumstances. The synthesis of acrylate PSA with hydroxyl group (AAOH), amide group (AACONH 2 ), hydroxyphenyl group (AAPhOH), and carboxyl group (AACOOH) was achieved via a solution polymerization process initiated by free radical. Gel permeation chromatography, molecular dynamic simulation and thermal analysis were conducted to characterize the properties of PSA. In vitro release study, Raman imaging and correlation analysis were performed to research the controlled release effect on the permeation enhancer azone (AZ). These were evaluated using a novel parameter called the control release factor ( F cr ). The more negative the F cr value, the stronger the control release effect . In vitro skin permeation study and pharmacokinetic study reflected the enhancing effects of AZ on drug ketoprofen (KET). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), molecular docking, rheology study, Raman spectra and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) characterized mechanisms of functional groups’ controlled release effect and the changes in skin barrier function. The results demonstrated that among the four PSA, AACOOH exhibited the most pronounced controlled release effect ( F cr = -45.91). This can be attributed to the formation of a robust ionic bond between AACOOH and AZ, which effectively restricted the release of AZ into the skin, resulting in minimal impact on disordering functionality of the skin barrier and enhancing drug permeation. The order of controlled release for the other three PSA on AZ was as follows: AAPhOH ( F cr = -43.60) > AACONH 2 ( F cr = -40.26) > AAOH ( F cr = -38.15), resulting the best enhancing effect attributed to AZ that released from AAOH into the skin. Besides, the interaction between the above three PSA and AZ was hydrogen bond, only the interaction of AAPhOH-AZ was a special hydrogen bond: ionic hydrogen bond. In summary, the type and strength of the interaction between PSA and PE determined the amount of PE entering the skin, thereby determining the extent to which PE disorder skin barrier function.

Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are widely used materials, yet most of their raw materials are currently derived from nonrenewable petroleum resources. The PSA industry faces challenges including the depletion of petroleum resources, high solvent emissions, and carbon-intensive manufacturing processes. To address these issues, a series of poly(dibutyl itaconate-co-butyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (PDBAG) copolymers were synthesized via high-temperature semicontinuous emulsion polymerization, using fully biobased dibutyl itaconate (DBI) as a monomer. The structures and properties of PDBAG with varying DBI and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) contents were systematically characterized. An optimal balance between adhesion and cohesion was achieved at a GMA content of 0.5 wt %. Remarkably, increasing DBI content from 30 wt % to 50 wt % enhances the high-frequency shear loss modulus (G″) from 55.5 to 87.3 kPa (measured at T = 40 °C, ε = 1%) and correspondingly improves the 180° peel strength with SUS from 10.7 N/25 mm to 16.5 N/25 mm. This enhancement mechanism is attributed to increased energy dissipation within the PSA network during peel deformation. They surpass commercial acrylic PSAs in both peel strength and shear holding power. Biobased PSA partially replaces petroleum-based acrylics in the polymer backbone and features simpler, more eco-friendly processing while maintaining outstanding adhesion. This establishes a sustainable pathway for next-generation adhesive development.
