Simultaneous biodegradation of dimethyl sulfide and 1-propanethiol by Pseudomonas putida S-1 and Alcaligenes sp. SY1: “Lag” cause, reduction, and kinetics exploration

Li Qian,Tang Zeqin,Zhang Jiahui,Hu Jingtao,Chen Jianmeng,Chen Dongzhi

Simultaneous biodegradation of malodorous 1-propanethiol (PT) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) by Pseudomonas putida S-1 and Alcaligenes sp. SY1 was investigated and the interactions implicated were explored. Results showed that PT was completely degraded in 33 h, while a lag of 10 h was observed for DMS degradation alone, and the lag was even extended to 81 h in the binary mixture. Mechanism analysis found that the lag was mainly attributed to the exposure of DMS degrader ( Alcaligenes sp. SY1), rather than PT metabolites and PT degrader. The exposure time and PT concentration also influenced the lag duration much. Citric acid could effectively reduce the lag. Pseudo-first-order model was proved suitable for the description of PT degradation, revealing that PT degradation could be enhanced in presence of DMS with a concentration of < 50 mg L −1 . A modified Gompertz model, incorporated the lag phase, was developed for the description of DMS degradation in the mixture, revealing that DMS degradation depended on the initial PT concentration, and when the lag was not considered, PT with low-concentration could promote DMS biodegradation, while a higher concentration (> 20 mg L −1 ) cast negative effect.

Combined treatment process of Fenton-like and peroxymonosulfate catalyzed by Fe(III)-reduced graphene oxide for efficient removal of isoprothiolane: Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and mechanism study

Zhongmou Liu,Pan Zhang,Xiangyu Zhao

Reduced graphene oxide supported with ferric ion (Fe(III)-rGO) was successfully prepared, and performed as an excellent catalyst to activate hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for isoprothiolane (IPT) degradation. IPT removal efficiency was proven to be better in the Fe(III)-rGO/H 2 O 2 /PMS system (96.2%) than in the Fenton-like reaction (72.6%) and PMS-AOP (80.0%) individually. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that Fe(III) was reduced in Fenton-like reaction, and the reduced Fe(II) played a crucial role in the subsequent PMS-AOP. The combination of the Fenton-like reaction and PMS-AOP involved the valence state conversion of Fe, which consequently improved Fe(III)-rGO utilization rate and IPT removal efficiency. Fe(III)-rGO remarkably boosted the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and generated superoxide radical (O 2 − •) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) in the Fe(III)-rGO/H 2 O 2 /PMS system. Fe(III)-rGO acts as the electron transfer mediator; thus, promoting electron transfer from IPT to H 2 O 2 and PMS and accelerating the generation of active species. Fe(IV) with high oxidation performance was formed in PMS-AOP and efficiently removed some of the IPT. IPT removal efficiency was more than 90% at a pH range of 3–11; this efficiency could be maintained above 50% even after five consecutive degradation experiments, exhibiting excellent stability and reusability of Fe(III)-rGO. Additionally, iron sludge formation was greatly reduced because of the stable chemical bonding of iron ions to the rGO surface. Therefore, this study provides a new multisystem and synergistic approach for the efficient removal of organic micro-pollutants from water.

Co-Treatment with Single and Ternary Mixture Gas of Dimethyl Sulfide, Propanethiol, and Toluene by a Macrokinetic Analysis in a Biotrickling Filter Seeded with Alcaligenes sp. SY1 and Pseudomonas Putida S1

Yiming Sun,Xiaowei Lin,Shaodong Zhu,Jianmeng Chen,Yi He,Yao Shi,Hua Liu,Lei Qin

The biotrickling filter (BTF) treatment is an effective way of dealing with air pollution caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, this approach is typically used for single VOCs treatment but not for the mixtures of VOC and volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSCs), even if they are often encountered in industrial applications. Therefore, we investigated the performance of BTF for single and ternary mixture gas of dimethyl sulfide (DMS), propanethiol, and toluene, respectively. Results showed that the co-treatment enhanced the removal efficiency of toluene, but not of dimethyl sulfide or propanethiol. Maximum removal rates (rmax) of DMS, propanethiol and toluene were calculated to be 256.41 g·m−3·h−1, 204.08 g·m−3·h−1and 90.91 g·m−3·h−1, respectively. For a gas mixture of these three constituents, rmaxwas measured to be 114.94 g·m−3·h−1, 104.17 g·m−3·h−1and 99.01 g·m−3·h−1, separately. Illumina MiSeq sequencing analysis further indicated that Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the major bacterial groups in BTF packing materials. A shift of bacterial community structure was observed during the biodegradation process. Keywords:biotrickling filter;decomposition;dimethyl sulfide;pollution;propanethiol;toluene

Biofilm metagenomic characteristics behind high coulombic efficiency for propanethiol deodorization in two-phase partitioning microbial fuel cell

Jian Yu,Juping You,Piet N.L. Lens,Lichao Lu,Yaxue He,Zhenyi Ji,Jianmeng Chen,Zhuowei Cheng,Dongzhi Chen

ABSTRACT Hydrophobic volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSCs) are frequently found during sewage treatment, and their effective management is crucial for reducing malodorous complaints. Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are effective for both VOSCs abatement and energy recovery. However, the performance of MFC on VOSCs remains limited by the mass transfer efficiency of MFC in aqueous media. Inspired by two-phase partitioning biotechnology, silicone oil was introduced for the first time into MFC as a non-aqueous phase (NAP) medium to construct two-phase partitioning microbial fuel cell (TPPMFC) and augment the mass transfer of target VOSCs of propanethiol (PT) in the liquid phase. The PT removal efficiency within 32 h increased by 11–20% compared with that of single-phase MFC, and the coulombic efficiency of TPPMFC (11.01%) was 4.32–2.68 times that of single-phase MFC owing to the fact that highly active desulfurization and thiol-degrading bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonas, Achromobacter ) were attached to the silicone oil surface, whereas sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (e.g., Thiobacillus, Commonas, Ottowia ) were dominant on the anodic biofilm. The outer membrane cytochrome-c content and NADH dehydrogenase activity improved by 4.15 and 3.36 times in the TPPMFC, respectively. The results of metagenomics by KEGG and COG confirmed that the metabolism of PT in TPPMFC was comprehensive, and that the addition of a NAP upregulates the expression of genes related to sulfur metabolism, energy generation, and amino acid synthesis. This finding indicates that the NAP assisted bioelectrochemical systems would be promising to solve mass-transfer restrictions in low solubility contaminates removal.

Performance and mechanism of innovative two-phase partitioning microbial fuel cell for effective propanethiol treatment

Juping You,Jian Yu,Shihan Zhang,Jianmeng Chen,Dongzhi Chen

A two-phase partitioning microbial fuel cell (TPPMFC) was first time constructed to enhance the mass transfer and removal efficiency of hydrophobic volatile organic sulfur compounds by adding silicone particles as solid non-aqueous phase. The results indicated that the output voltage was gradient increased with the concentration of selected mode propanethiol increased from 100 mg/L to 500 mg/L, but the complete degradation cycle of PT was extended from 12 h to 78 h. The obvious enhancement of microbial fuel cell performance was achieved with 2 % (v/v) 0.4 mm silicone particle. The output voltage increased by 95.6 % ± 12 %, the removal efficiency of 500 mg/L of propanethiol increased from 67 % ± 3 % to 91 % ± 4 % within 24 h, and the maximum power density was 26.23 mW/m 2 (72.5 % improvement). The live microorganism on the anodic biofilm was maintained at 95 % after a long-term operation, which was benefited from the fluid shear force caused by agitated anolyte and solid non-aqueous phase. Moreover, the dominant microbial in the TPPMFC were Pseudomonas , sulfate-reduced Aquamicrobium , and Acinetobacte r, and the propanethiol was biodegraded by them via two different pathways compared with the traditional ones. Finally, the mechanisms of propanethiol removal and power generation in the TPPMFC were analyzed. It is believed that the results provide insight into the application of two-phase distribution technology for the removal of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds in bioelectrochemical systems.
