Improvement of flame retardancy of silk fabric by bio-based phytic acid, nano-TiO2, and polycarboxylic acid

Xian-Wei Cheng,Jin-Ping Guan,Xu-Hong Yang,Ren-Cheng Tang

This research work reported a novel approach to develop flame retardant silk fabric using naturally occurring phytic acid (PA) rich in phosphorus and TiO 2 nanoparticles through a pad-dry-cure technique. A polycarboxylic acid [1,2,3,4–butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA)] was employed to stabilize and improve the adhesion of TiO 2 on silk surface. The flame retardancy of the treated silk fabric was determined in terms of limiting oxygen index, vertical burning, and pyrolysis combustion flow calorimetry, and the durability of flame retardancy to washing was discussed. PA and TiO 2 were found to have a joint flame retardant effect. The combination of PA, TiO 2 and BTCA was able to endow silk fabric with excellent flame retardancy, and the good flame retardant ability was kept even after 25 times of washing. The reasons for the good washing durability of the treated silk fabric were discussed. Finally, a significant condensed-phase flame retardant mechanism of the silk fabric treated with the PA/TiO 2 /BTCA system was revealed by the analyses of thermogravimetry and pyrolysis combustion flow calorimetry.

Dyeing of Silk through Iron Ion-Induced Formation of Hydrophobic Lignin Coatings

Ying Ma,Qinfu Lu,Shanshan Lv

There is a continuous demand for a specific type of Chinese silk fabric, which is one of China’s national intangible cultural heritage items called Xiang-Yun-Sha. Xiang-Yun-Sha is silk fabric dyed using the vegetable dyes from a yam and the mud from the Pearl Delta River. The ingenious and sophisticated dyeing process inspires us to explore new dyes for silk. Through learning from the traditional mud dyeing process of Xiang-Yun-Sha, especially the contents of the mud, lignin and iron species are recognized as key factors. Yet little attention has been dedicated to lignin as a dye despite its wide applications. In this study, the feasibility of using lignin to dye silk is investigated using sodium lignosulfonate and alkaline lignin as model systems. Thanks to their advantageous polyphenolic features, such as stacking tendency and ability to form stable complexes with iron ions, lignin-related compounds show excellent performance in serving as dyes by themselves, as well as protective coatings for other dyes; the dyed silk fabric could inherit anti-ultraviolet property from lignin. Considering that iron is inexpensive and that leftover lignin is a vastly underutilized biomass resource, this study offers a promising strategy to exploit the enormous potential of these naturally occurring materials by developing high value-added products.

Yellow pigment of Metarhizium anisopliae and its application to the dyeing of fabrics

Biaobiao Yan,Muying Yang,Qingqing Zhou,Tieling Xing,Guoqiang Chen,Jiayong Sheng

Microbial dyes have received substantial attention because of their natural environmental protection, simple access, and reduced regional and seasonal restriction. In this work, a microbial dye, the yellow pigment produced by Metarhizium anisopliae , was first studied then applied. The strain produced by the culture was identified, and the conditions for producing yellow pigment were optimised. Further, the stability of M. anisopliae yellow pigment was examined, and the pigment was applied to the dyeing of silk and wool fabrics. The results showed that the homology of the strain with M. anisopliae was 99.98%. In liquid fermentation culture, the optimal carbon source was glucose, and the dosage was 30 g/l. The maximum pigment yield can be obtained by culturing with 4% v/v of inoculation quantity at pH 7 and 30 °C. In addition, the effects of pH, temperature and metal ions on the yellow pigment of M. anisopliae were significant. The optimum dyeing process conditions were dyeing temperatures of 80 °C for silk and 90 °C for wool, with a dyeing time of 60 min. This research developed a novel microbial dye and studied its application for the dyeing of protein fibres.

Developing a Multifunctional Silk Fabric with Dual-Driven Heating and Rapid Photothermal Antibacterial Abilities Using High-Yield MXene Dispersions

Biaobiao Yan,Man Zhou,Xiaoting Liao,Ping Wang,Yuanyuan Yu,Jiugang Yuan,Qiang Wang

Two-dimensional material titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx MXene) has been widely used for building diverse functional materials; however, the disadvantages of unsatisfactory yield and low concentration during the preparation process generally limit its large-scale promotion. In the present work, an MXene dispersion with enhanced yield (90%), high concentration (45 mg/mL), and excellent dispersibility was successfully prepared. Subsequently, the active MXene nanosheets were effectively in situ deposition onto the silk fiber by means of dip-coating, relying on van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds. The obtained MXene-decorated silk fabric (MXene@silk) exhibits satisfactory electrical conductivity (170 mS/cm), excellent photothermal and electrothermal conversion properties, especially dual-drive energy conversion, rapid thermal responses, and long-term functional stability. Furthermore, UV protection factor of the fabric, and its antibacterial efficiency against Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) within 20 min of contact reach over 110 and 99%, respectively, demonstrating remarkable UV resistance and rapid photothermal antibacterial ability. Meanwhile, the fabric of MXene@silk still retains the original characteristics of breathability, softness, and skin-friendly properties compared to the untreated. The multifunctional fabric constructed through a facile and high-yield strategy shows a noticeable potential applying to smart textiles to meet people’s multipurpose needs in the future.

Bio-Inspired Coloring and Functionalization of Silk Fabric via Laccase-Catalyzed Graft Polymerization of Arylamines

Nong Yelin,Zhou Zhou,Yuan Jiugang,Wang Ping,Yu Yuanyuan,Wang Qiang,Fan Xuerong

Generally, dyeing and finishing of Bombyx mori silk fibers were proceeded at high temperature, which has the disadvantages of overmuch energy-consumptions. In the present work, bio-inspired in situ coloring and functionalization of silk fabric were carried out via laccase-catalyzed graft polymerization of arylamines, including aniline (ANI) and p -phenylenediamine (PPD). p -Hydroxyphenylacetamide (PHAD) as the model compound of tyrosine residues in silk fibroin (SF) was used to explore the mechanism of graft polymerization by means of MALDI-TOF MS. The actions of the dopants of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and sodium p -aminobenzenesulfonate (ABSA) on the enzymatic treatment were also concerned. The results indicated that laccase might initiate the self-polymerizations of ANI and PPD, respectively, and formed the copolymers of arylamine and PHAD subsequently. High color depth and color fastness were obtained after incubation silk fabric with laccase and arylamines, companying with a noticeable pH-responsiveness. The laccase-mediated treatment endowed silk fabric with antibacterial and antioxidant abilities, meanwhile, the addition of dopants of SDBS and ABSA promoted the enzymatic finishing. Enzymatic graft polymerization of arylamine onto silk fibroin provides a novel approach for dyeing and functionalization of silk fabrics under mild treating conditions.

In Situ Coloring and Antibacterial Finishing of Silk Fabrics Through Fenton-Induced Deposition of Caffeic Acid and Silver Nanoparticles

Yuan Yun,Bao Xueming,Wu Leilei,Wang Ping,Yu Yuanyuan,Wang Qiang

Due to the weak interaction between dye molecule and silk fiber, traditional acid dyeing of silk fabrics has some shortcomings such as high energy consumption and poor dyeing fastness. In the present work, in situ coloring of silk fabric was carried out via graft polymerization of caffeic acid (CA) by using a Fenton system consisting of FeCl 2 and H 2 O 2 . Subsequently, silver ions were reduced to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by poly(caffeic acid) (PCA) grafted in silk fibroin and deposited on the fiber surfaces, aiming at improving the antibacterial property of silk fabric. The results indicate that it is feasible to achieve in situ dyeing of silk fabrics under low temperature condition through graft polymerization of CA, and the color depth (K/S value) increases to 4.8. Meanwhile, the iron ions might further form coordination bonds with PCA and tyrosine residues in silk fibers, which can improve the washable resistance and wet rubbing fastness of the dyed fabrics, reaching the grade of 4–5. In addition, PAC grafted on silk fibers exhibits high reductivity, which can reduce silver ions and guide the AgNP deposition on the surface of silk fibers. This allows silk fabrics to achieve efficient and durable antibacterial effects, and the antibacterial rate remains above 98% even after cyclic washings. The present work provides a novel approach for in situ coloring and functionalization of silk fabrics without additional synthetic dyes or antibacterial agents.

Polymerization and Dyeing Properties of Gallic Acid on Silk Fabric Catalyzed by Horseradish Peroxidase

Baek Na-won,Fan Xue-rong,Yuan Jiu-gang,Xu Jin,Wang Qiang

Due to the increasing importance of environmentally friendly processes, the development of monomer synthesis and its polymerization using enzymes has been investigated throughout the world. In this paper, the polymerization mechanism between silk fabrics and gallic acid (GA) in the presence of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) has been studied. The polymerization mechanism was studied in detail using UV-Vis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS) analysis. In addition, the dyeing properties and optimum reaction conditions were further investigated using the K/S values. The color fastness of the resulting silk fabrics has also been discussed. The results show that the dyeing mechanism for GA and silk fabric involved linking via the -NH 2 and -OH groups in silk fiber and the -OH groups in GA. This was probably formed via the formation of phenyl-phenyl, oxygen-phenyl, or amino-phenyl linkages. HRP significantly improved the dyeing properties of GA dyes toward silk fabrics. The optimum reaction conditions for dyeing silk fabrics have been proposed (Incubation period, 5 h; temperature, 50 °C; GA dosage, 10 mM; HRP, 6 U/ml, and H 2 O 2 , 5 mM). The color fastness of the resulting silk fabrics displayed high colorfastness in all the colorfastness tests performed.

Rapid Antibacterial Effects of Silk Fabric Constructed through Enzymatic Grafting of Modified PEI and AgNP Deposition

Feiyu Wang,Biaobiao Yan,Zirong Li,Ping Wang,Man Zhou,Yuanyuan Yu,Jiugang Yuan,Li Cui,Qiang Wang

Enzymatic antibacterial finishing is an eco-friendly alternative to develop functional silk-based materials. However, the low accessibility of tyrosine residues distributed in fibroin chains restricts the laccase-mediated functionalization of silk fibers (SF). To address this issue, a highly reactive p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid-modified polyethyleneimine (mPEI) was enzymatically grafted onto fibroin using laccase, aiming at constructing an antibacterial matrix of mPEI on the fiber surface. Subsequently, in situ deposition of silver nanoparticles (i.e., AgNPs) into the newly built mPEI network was performed to form a rapid antibacterial layer. The results indicated that laccase efficiently catalyzes the mPEI coupling, the zeta potential of SF-g-mPEI increases from −32 to 21.70 mV, and the silver content reaches 1.81% after AgNP embedment. Based on the combined two-step treatments, the obtained silk fabric exhibited excellent antibacterial abilities against two bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The antibacterial rates of both bacteria reached 99.9% within 30 min of contact, remaining over 99.9% within 18 h of contact even after washing 10 times. The present work provides an enzyme-mediated method for construction of silk fabric with durable and rapid antibacterial activity.

Controllable coating of zinc oxide on protein-based fibers/fabrics for superior antibacterial performance preserving wearable abilities

Xingfang Xiao,Bowen Zhang,Pei Lyu,Fengxiang Chen,Qian Zhang,Jiuxiao Sun,Zhan Jiang,Xin Liu,Weilin Xu

As a natural protein resource, silk has been favored for thousands of years due to remarkable properties and the lustrous appearance. The broaden use of natural silk promotes it to become a high-tech fiber, which is undesirably hindered by the high hygroscopicity that provides conditions for bacterial growth thus accelerates the corrosion of silk. Functional surface modification can pose as compensation, but traditional nanoscale coating approaches come at the expense of inherent properties. In this work, ultrathin zinc oxide (ZnO) was uniformly deposited on silk fabrics in nanoscale using the atomic layer deposition (ALD) strategy. Different layers of ZnO were deposited by controlling the deposition cycles in the ALD process to evaluate the influences in antibacterial performances. The ZnO coated silk fabrics showed neglectable differences in morphologies compared with the raw silk fabric while manifesting excellent antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus . The ZnO layer had insignificant influence on mechanical and air permeable properties, which guaranteed the wearable properties of silk fabrics. This work contributes to an innovative modification method for natural and wearable protein fibers with antibacterial properties in a controllable and uniform way.

Covalent grafting of reactive phytate salt for durable flame-retardant functionalization of protein silk fabric

Chang Wu,Zong-Xing Wu,Shu-Jin Long,Xi Luo,Xian-Wei Cheng,Jin-Ping Guan

The development of sustainable and durable flame-retardant protein silk fabric without compromising its physical properties is of interest but challenging. In this study, a fully biobased reactive flame-retardant, vanillin phytate, was synthesized from biomass phytic acid and vanillin. Subsequently, vanillin phytate was covalently grafted onto silk fabrics along with diethyl phosphite under mild conditions via the Kabachnik–Fields reaction. The chemical structure of vanillin phytate and its potential cross-linking mechanism with silk fibers, thermal stability, combustion behavior, flame retardancy, washing durability, and mode of action of the modified silk fabrics were investigated. The modified silk exhibited a significant reduction in heat and smoke release by 63.8 % and 90 %, respectively, versus pristine silk. The modified silk fabrics also demonstrated excellent self-extinguishing capacity, with a reduced damaged length of 7.0 cm and an increased limiting oxygen index of over 34 %. Furthermore, the modified silk fabric maintained self-extinguishing performance after 25 washing cycles, showing high flame-retardant efficiency and good washing durability. The char residue analyses revealed that the modification primarily exerted its flame-retardant effect in the condensed phase. Interestingly, the present strategy had less influence on the physical performance of silk fabrics, indicating a wide range of practical applications.

Eco-friendly fabrication of durable antibacterial silk fabric via transglutaminase-catalyzed covalent immobilization of protamine

Pirah Ayaz,Xi Liu,Zhi Chen,Yuyun Yu,Javaria Khayaban E. Erum,Tingting Sun,Hongyan Diao,Xiangdong Liu

The immobilization of antibacterial peptides (APs) onto silk material substrates remains challenging due to the scarcity of green, low-cost, and efficient methods for covalent bonding between these two proteins. The present work proposed a novel strategy for covalently grafting APs onto silk fiber surfaces for antibacterial purposes. Firstly, silk fiber surfaces were grafted with glutamine (Gln) through a cure-induced esterification reaction, the AP protamine (PM) was then covalently grafted via transglutaminase (TGase)-catalyzed cross-linking onto the fiber surfaces. FTIR, SEM, XPS investigations verified the successful attachment of PM and the covalent connection between the PM and the fiber surfaces. The modified silk fabric showed bacteria reduction rates higher than 99.99 % against S. aureus and E. coli , and maintained its antibacterial properties after 20 washing cycles, highlighting a desirable antibacterial activity and considerable durability. Moreover, the modifications did not sacrifice the appearances and wearing comfortabilities of silk fabric, but even led to significant enhancement in the moisture transfer properties. This strategy, based on naturally occurring amino acid, AP and enzyme, could not only be an attractive alternative for real-world application in the silk industry but also could be extended to the modification of other protein-based materials.

Flexible and wearable electronic silk fabrics for human physiological monitoring

Cuiping Mao,Huihui Zhang,Zhisong Lu

The development of textile-based devices for human physiological monitoring has attracted tremendous interest in recent years. However, flexible physiological sensing elements based on silk fabrics have not been realized. In this paper, ZnO nanorod arrays are grown in situ on reduced graphene oxide-coated silk fabrics via a facile electro-deposition method for the fabrication of silk-fabric-based mechanical sensing devices. The data show that well-aligned ZnO nanorods with hexagonal wurtzite crystalline structures are synthesized on the conductive silk fabric surface. After magnetron sputtering of gold electrodes, silk-fabric-based devices are produced and applied to detect periodic bending and twisting. Based on the electric signals, the deformation and release processes can be easily differentiated. Human arterial pulse and respiration can also be real-time monitored to calculate the pulse rate and respiration frequency, respectively. Throat vibrations during coughing and singing are detected to demonstrate the voice recognition capability. This work may not only help develop silk-fabric-based mechanical sensing elements for potential applications in clinical diagnosis, daily healthcare monitoring and voice recognition, but also provide a versatile method for fabricating textile-based flexible electronic devices.
