Microchannel-Confined Chinese Ink-Based Highly Stretchable Liquid-State Strain Sensor for Early Warning of Road Collapse

Haozhen Chi,Yipei Yao,Ziying Zhu,Chenyang Gao,Hongyang Shi,Haochuan Wan,Dibo Hou,Yunqi Cao

Stretchable strain sensors are widely used in the fields of wearable devices, soft robotics, healthcare monitoring, and more. Despite tremendous efforts, strain sensors capable of detecting large-scale soil deformation for urban geological hazard prevention have not yet been demonstrated. In this paper, a soft strain sensor of a highly stretchable Ecoflex-0030 elastomeric matrix with microchannel-confined environmentally benign conductive Chinese ink as the liquid-state strain-sensitive material that can reliably detect a wide range of working strain up to 300% is demonstrated. The sensor exhibits a negligible hysteresis error of 2.1%, with a considerably good gauge factor of 1.95. The sensor performance is evaluated under both creep and cyclic loading tests, indicating superior stability (0.65% fluctuation), and repeatability (0.28% variation in 1000 cycles), even under a lower underground environment temperature of 18° C . As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a liquid-state strain sensor array with a strain amplification mechanism capable of accurately monitoring the formation of various underground cavities and providing timely demanded information for early warning of catastrophic road collapse is demonstrated and verified by the computer vision-based particle image velocimetry (PIV) method.

Chinese ink-promoted co-assembly synthesis of 3D hierarchically structured and porous MoCx/C nanocomposites for highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Xueliang Fan,Hongbin Zhang,Boxu Gao,Haiyang Lu,Luyao Zheng,Xue Yang,Yahong Zhang,Qingsheng Gao,Yi Tang

To explore high-performance carbide catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the rational design of hierarchically porous catalyst benefitting active-site exposure and fast mass transport is extremely demanded. Herein, Chinese ink (CI), used for writing and drawing for thousands of years, is adopted to promote the formation of co-assembly of carbon nanoparticles and Mo-based lamellar organic-inorganic hybrids, which, after pyrolysis in Ar atmosphere , is further converted to 3D hierarchically structured and porous MoC x /C nanocomposites (HSP-MoC x /C) for high-efficient HER. Their skeleton structure, porosity, carbon amounts, phase composition and active species dispersity are well modulated by simply tuning the CI dosage in starting mixture, and its mechanism is monitored via a series of physicochemical characterization techniques. The optimal composite exhibits remarkable HER activity with low overpotentials of 112 and 86 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and the small Tafel slopes of 52 and 50 mV dec −1 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH solution, respectively. Such performance stems from the combined effects of enhanced ion/mass transport, abundant exposed active sites and high conductivity due to the 3D hierarchically skeleton architecture of catalysts. This work paves a new strategy to design hierarchically porous materials for chemical conversion and energy storage .

Reproducing ancient Chinese ink depending on gelatin/chitosan and modern experimental methodology

Liu Zhen,Liu Kun

Chinese ink has very special significance for presentation of artistic effects and preservation of works of art; however, wasted nonrenewable resources, potential toxicity, and complex and inefficient production technologies have limited the development of inks for traditional Chinese culture. Herein, environmentally friendly, practical and antibacterial Chinese ink was prepared by facile heating-stirring of gelatin and the natural polysaccharide chitosan. The internal composition, viscosity, morphology, particle size and antibacterial properties of the ink were characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and bacteriostatic zone tests. The results showed that commercial ink (CM) spread easily on Xuan paper and led to imperfect artwork, while the chitosan and gelatin ink (CG) showed good adhesion and stability on Xuan paper. Based on this study, we believe that the good performance of CG ink should be attributed to restrictions arising from its internal chitosan and gelatin network, which restrict diffusion. Finally, the author used CG ink to display traditional Chinese calligraphy and landscape painting and believes that it has significant application prospects and will be used in large-scale production.

Innovative spherical hydrogel architecture for efficient solar-driven desalination: A waste-to-resource approach

Li Yang,Size Zheng,Mingming Zheng,Lihong Zhou,Xi Rao,Yinhao Liao,Xiaoke Li

This study presents an innovative spherical hydrogel architecture designed for efficient solar-driven interfacial evaporation, leveraging a waste-to-resource approach by recycling sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) from discarded diapers. The developed PAAS/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite hydrogel (PPSH) integrates recycled PAAS with PVA and Chinese ink to form a hierarchical porous structure that enhances water transport and photothermal conversion efficiency. The spherical design of PPSH significantly increases the steam dissipation area, reduces heat loss, and improves salt resistance, achieving an evaporation rate of 3.18 kg/(m 2 ·h) under one sun illumination. The hydrogel demonstrates exceptional desalination performance, reducing total dissolved solids (TDS) by 2–4 orders of magnitude in seawater with varying salinities (up to 250 ‰) and maintaining stable operation over extended periods. Additionally, PPSH exhibits high versatility in treating domestic wastewater across a broad pH range (2–13), meeting the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water standards. Outdoor field tests further validate the practical applicability of PPSH, with a daily water production rate of 22.87 kg/m 2 under natural sunlight. This work not only addresses freshwater scarcity through sustainable waste utilization but also provides critical insights into the structural design of scalable solar desalination technologies, offering a promising solution for decentralized water purification.
