Development of Microcapsule Bioactive Paper Loaded with Chinese Fir Essential Oil to Improve the Quality of Strawberries

Xiuli Song,Liuxin Shi,Su Liu,Chen Hou,Kai Zhu,Qiang Cheng,Luyu Mei

Essential oils are natural antibacterial substances and have potential value for application in fruit and vegetable packaging. In this study, Chinese fir essential oil (CFEO) was microencapsulated to prepare food packaging materials for the first time to overcome its volatilization and oxidation shortcomings and to obtain a sustained-release form of the oil. CFEO was effectively encapsulated in gelatin and chitosan using the complex coacervation method, and the encapsulation efficiency, microstructure, infrared spectrum and thermal stability of the microcapsules were evaluated. Experiments confirmed that the microcapsules had some antibacterial activity. A bioactive paper was developed by combining CFEO microcapsules (CFEO-Ms) with paper-based material using the film-forming property of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The coated paper showed good mechanical, air permeability and moisture permeability properties. Environmental scanning electron microscopy confirmed that CFEO-Ms bonded well with PVA and was successfully introduced into the paper fiber after coating, forming an obvious coating film on the surface to facilitate the continuous release of CFEO. The shelf life of strawberries was significantly prolonged when the PVA-coated paper mixed with 3% CFEO-Ms was used for packaging. The results demonstrated that the CFEO-Ms coated paper has the potential to become an effective packaging material for the preservation of strawberries. Keywords:Chinese fir essential oil;microcapsule;coated paper;food packaging;strawberries

Investigation into the Performance Enhancement of Calcium Phosphate Mineralization-Compacted Chinese Fir

Jiafeng Yang,Shutong Zhang,Yun Qian,Haili Chen,Yunyan Peng,Youming Yu

The utilization of wood as a construction material offers inherent advantages, including its renewability, good process property, wide availability, and carbon sequestration. However, its susceptibility to combustion and limited mechanical properties also constrain its applications. In this work, calcium phosphate was in situ deposited in dignified Chinese fir wood, followed by hot-pressed densification. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) reveals that mineralization and densification alleviate the thermal decomposition and combustion behavior of wood, which greatly promotes the formation of the dense char layer during wood combustion. Therefore, the maximum heat release rate (HRR), total heat release rate (THR), and total smoke production rate (TSP) of the as-prepared mineralized dense wood were significantly reduced by 37%, 32%, and 56% compared with the control one. Further, the mineralized dense wood showed a remarkable enhancement in flexural strength and flexural modulus of elasticity, 203% and 220% higher than the natural wood, respectively. This study demonstrated a straightforward and eco-friendly approach to fabricating structural wood possessing exceptional flame retardancy and mechanical characterization, which holds immense potential for application in energy-efficient green buildings.

Efficient fractionation of Chinese fir lignocellulose using acidified deep eutectic solvent with downstream valorization into value-added cellulosic nanofillers and propylguaiacol

Guoqiang Han,Wanqi Wang,Jialong Lv,Baibing Zhao,Zijian Zhang,Yan Zeng,Yongzhuang Liu,Haipeng Yu,Xiaoxue Song

Fractionation of softwood lignocellulose poses challenges due to its relatively high lignin content and complex interlinkages. In this study, an acidified deep eutectic solvent (choline chloride/ethylene glycol with 1 wt% AlCl₃) was employed to effectively fractionate Chinese fir chips into cellulose-rich and lignin fractions, achieving good to excellent yields. The cellulose-rich fraction was directly valorized into lignin-containing cellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) with a high yield. The prepared LCNFs were utilized as functional nanofillers in waterborne polyurethane wood coatings (WWC), resulting in an increase in tensile strength from 15.2 ± 0.35 MPa to 18.5 ± 0.43 MPa with the optimal addition of 0.5 wt% LCNFs. Furthermore, the addition of LCNFs significantly improved the coating properties, including hardness and wear resistance. The remaining lignin in the LCNFs imparted excellent optical properties to the WWC film, imparting a warm amber hue and improved texture convexity after coating. Analysis of the lignin fractions revealed a high total content of β-O-4 linkages. Following a catalytic hydrogen transfer depolymerization process, 9.8 wt% of propylguaiacol was obtained with near-quantitative selectivity. This study highlights the effectiveness of acidified deep eutectic solvents in the refinery of softwood lignocellulose, providing a novel pathway for the production of value-added bio-based nanomaterials and chemicals.

Inorganic-accelerated aging method: An efficient and simple strategy to obtain antique Chinese fir wood for the restoration of ancient wooden architecture

Yunyan Peng,Cong Wang,Xiaochun Zhang,Wei Zheng,Youming Yu

Ancient wooden architectures, the precious material cultural heritages of mankind, were faced with huge potential safety hazards because of the excessive aging and natural disaster. Replacing failed wood structure with antique wood is a proper and sustainable method for the repairment and reinforcement, however restricted by the lack of antique wood and mature wood antique technology. In this work, an inorganic-accelerated aging method was put forward to simulate the aging of Chinese fir wood. The as prepared antique wood exhibited a very similar surface color to that of the ancient wood, with a small chromatic aberration of only 4.4. The change of chemical compositions after inorganic-accelerated aging was also explored that hemicellulose was degraded greatly accompanied by the partly degradation of lignin and amorphous cellulose, which were similar to the nature aging process and resulted in an increase of wood crystallinity. Besides the as obtained a-W exhibited satisfactory mechanical strength, of which the bending modulus, static bending strength and compressive strength was 97.7 %, 93.4 % and 93.6 % of the ancient wood, respectively. This work provides a promising strategy for the preparing of antique wood, which is of great significance for the restoration of ancient wood architectures.

Design and theoretical calculation of chitosan derivatives: Amphiphilic chitosan micelles loaded with Chinese fir essential oil

Ying Lu,Xiangzhou Li,Jun Zhou,Peng Zhou,Jiajia Lai,Yanhong Yang,Liqun Shen

The unique structure of chitosan-based micelles can be loaded with essential oil, so it is significant to study the modification of chitosan and the interactions between chitosan and essential oil, while molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and density functional theory (DFT) provide a solution. In this study, three kinds of amphiphilic chitosan derivatives (CSDs) were constructed by grafting of different hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. Amphiphilic chitosan micelles loaded with Chinese fir essential oil (CFEO) were prepared by self-assembly. The aggregation behavior of CFEO component (cedrol and α-cedrene) in the solutions of chitosan and three CSDs were simulated using MD, and the mean square displacement was calculated. DFT analyzed the mechanism for regulating the molecular properties of CSDs by different modification methods, and explored the intensity and type of interaction force between cedrol/α-cedrene and three CSDs. The results show that cedrol and α-cedrene were more easily aggregated near the modified CSDs, with CS-g-PLA showing the strongest trapping ability. The grafting of polylactic acid on chitosan resulted in a significant decrease in HOMO-LUMO energy gap and an increase in reactivity activity. Widely distributed hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces were confirmed to be the key to enhanced loading capacity.

Lignin-based catalysts for Chinese fir furfurylation to improve dimensional stability and mechanical properties

Mengmeng Yao,Yiqin Yang,Junlong Song,Yan Yu,Yongcan Jin

In order to valorize lignin from spent liquor of pulping mills, a novel catalyzing system for wood furfurylation which composed of lignin-derived acids (LDAs, i.e. lignosulfonic acid and sulfomethylated lignin acid) and buffer sodium borate was developed, and was applied to Chinese fir furfurylation for improved dimensional stability and mechanical properties. LDAs were prepared by protonating of sulfomethylated lignin and lignosulfonate through cation exchange resin. The catalyzing system was optimized by the storage duration of FA formulas with respective catalyzing system at room temperature and the curing time at elevated temperature. Then, three formulas were selected out to treat Chinese fir and their performance was evaluated by weight percentage gain, dimensional stability, and compressive strength. The results showed that LDAs, especially sulfomethylated lignin acid, penetrated into cell walls and catalyzed furfurylation reaction quite well. The best performance achieved in this study by Formula III was with weight percentage gain of 66.4%, equilibrium moisture content 12.9%, anti-swelling efficiency 61.9% and 70.6% for the conditions of high humidity and water-soaking, respectively; its parallel-to-grain compressive strength was improved by 45.4%. It hints lignin-derived acids combined with borate would be a promising catalyst system for wood furfurylation since it valorizes both the waste lignin and low-valued wood.

Two R2R3-MYB transcription factors from Chinese cedar (Cryptomeria fortunei Hooibrenk) are involved in the regulation of secondary cell wall formation

Junjie Yang,Jin Xu,Yingting Zhang,Jiebing Cui,Hailiang Hu,Jinyu Xue,Lijuan Zhu

As the most abundant renewable energy source , wood comprises the secondary cell wall (SCW). SCW biosynthesis involves lignin and cellulose deposition. Increasing studies have illustrated that R2R3-MYB transcription factors (TFs) play pivotal roles in affecting lignin accumulation and SCW formation. Nevertheless, the regulatory roles of R2R3-MYBs are still unresolved in Cryptomeria fortunei Hooibrenk cambium and wood formation. To dissect the potentials of CfMYBs , we successfully cloned and intensively studied the functions of CfMYB4 and CfMYB5 in SCW formation and abiotic stress response. They both contained the conserved MYB domain capable of forming a special structure that could bind to the core motifs of downstream genes. The phylogenetic tree implied that two CfMYBs clustered into different evolutionary branches. They were predominantly expressed in the stem and were localized to the nucleus. Furthermore, CfMYB4 functioned as an activator to enhance lignin and cellulose accumulation, and increase the SCW thickness by elevating the expression levels of SCW-related genes. By contrast, CfMYB5 negatively regulated lignin and cellulose biosynthesis, and decreased SCW formation by reducing the expression of SCW biosynthetic genes. Our data not only highlight the regulatory functions of CfMYBs in lignin deposition but also provide critical insights into the development of strategies for the genetic improvement of Cryptomeria fortunei wood biomass.
