WO 3 based electrochromic device (ECD) is becoming the mostly-used one for smart windows, however, in WO 3 tinted state, the intrinsically deep blue and strong infrared (IR) light absorption, resulting in a habitant discomfortableness and also an enhanced thermal gain from the heated device surface, severely restrict its diversified applications. Herein, we firstly conduct a kind of columnarly-grown and amorphous WO 3 film with high concentration of niobium doping (Nb/(Nb+W) = 54.1 at.%). This film is fabricated via sputtering a home-made ceramic target, and subsequently improved by a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process. Comparing with the conventional WO 3 , the newly-established system owns not only basic EC properties comprising large light modulation range, fast response, and long-term electrochemically cyclic stability, but also a neutral-tinted color ( a * = −1.5, b * = 1.0) as well as a relatively lower IR absorption (63.7 %) in tinted state. These outstanding performances enable the assembled ECD with neutral color ( a * = 0.6, b * = −2.7) and a higher energy efficiency in cutting down the interior space air temperature about 4.3 °C in its fully-tinted state, underscoring the potential of the tungsten-niobium-oxygen for commercially viable ECDs.

Semi-transparent perovskite solar cells (ST-PSCs) engendered enormous attention for practical applications such as power generation windows. However, it is still challenging to achieve high-performance, robust and neutral-colored ST-PSCs. Herein we demonstrate a moth-eye-inspired structure (MEIS) for light-trapping photons in the wavelength range where the human eye is less perceptive. This biomimetic structure contributes to the improvements in ST-PSCs performance and visual appearance simultaneously. Consequently, a record high figure-of-merit for ST-PSC, defined as the product of power conversion efficiency and the average visible transmittance, is achieved. Meanwhile, the optical appearance is converted to a desired near-neutral color after introducing the MEIS. The investigation of ST-PSCs with long-term stability is implemented via engineering blend ratio of halides. The modified device exhibited appealing tolerance against moisture and solar irradiation. This work reveals an in-depth understanding of light trapping along with modifying the visual appearance of solar cells.
The electrochromic (EC) mechanisms of inorganic materials are usually based on reversible cation insertion/extraction or metal deposition/dissolution, which are plagued by ion trapping and dendrite growth, respectively. In this paper, a novel conversion-type electrochromic mechanism is proposed, by making good use of the CuI/Cu redox couple. This CuI-based electrochromic system shows a neutral color switching from transparent and dim grey. By simply increasing the bleaching voltage, \({{\rm{I}}_3}^ - /{{\rm{I}}^ - }\) redox couple can be further activated. The generated \({{\rm{I}}_3}^ - \) will readily react with Cu, effectively improving the conversion reversibility and thereby rejuvenating the degraded electrochromic performance. Thanks to the well-designed electrode and the self-healing ability, this conversion electrochromic system achieves rapid response times ( t coloring : 23 s, t bleaching : 6 s), decant optical modulation amplitude (26.4%), high coloration efficiency (86.15 cm 2 ·C −1 ), admirable cyclic durability (without performance degradation after 480 cycles) and excellent optical memory ability (transmittance variation < 1% after 10 h open-circuit storage). The establishment of this conversion-type electrochromism may inspire the exploration of novel electrochromic materials and devices.
