In this article, a reflective surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on multimode fiber (MMF)–hollow core fiber (HCF) structure is proposed for simultaneous measurement of temperature and humidity. Along the HCF, two different films, i.e., polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film are coated on the outer surface to generate two SPR resonances at different wavelengths and achieve the simultaneous measurement function. In order to get a better sensing performance, the length ratio of PVA film and PDMS film, and the PVA coating times are optimized. The experimental results show that the humidity sensitivity of the sensor is 0.6351 nm/% relative humidity (RH) in the RH range of 48%–84% RH, and the temperature sensitivity of the sensor is 1.791 nm/°C in the temperature measurement range of 25 °C–80 °C. The sensor has great potential applications in monitoring the environmental temperature and humidity changes.

We present a novel UV–visible-light photocatalytic optical hollow-fiber in which a hollow optical fiber (HOF) and TiO 2 -based composite are coupled for enhancement of photocatalytic activity toward degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). A HOF was coated with a TiO 2 -based composite composed of Er 3+ :YAlO 3 /SiO 2 /TiO 2 (EYST) and acting as the photocatalytic element. The EYST coating showed good light-inducing capacity at the fiber-coating interface and high photocatalytic activity driven by UV–visible light. The photocatalytic activity of the fabricated photocatalytic HOFs was investigated for degradation of 4-CP in aqueous solution in the wavelength spectrum of 360–780 nm. Examined were the effects of the EYST coating gradient and reactor operating conditions (pH and temperature) on the degradation of 4-CP. The EYST-coated HOF significantly enhanced the 4-CP degradation, dechlorination, and mineralization, compared to pure TiO 2 -coated HOF and EYST-coated solid optical fibers. Specifically, high photocatalytic activity was obtained when the EYST coating thicknesses at the HOF’s incident end and HOF’s hemispherical end were 10 and 160 μm, the pH was 6.0, and temperature was 55 °C.

The dual recognition method has been applied extensively as an attractive strategy, which effectively improved the specificity of detection. Herein, a novel silver-coated hollow fiber (HF) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on a dual-recognition strategy for high-sensitivity detection of dopamine (DA) was presented. The 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (PMBA) monolayer was self-assembled on the silver film surface in the sensor as the recognition layer. Meanwhile, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA)-modified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were adopted as the signal amplification tag to enhance the wavelength shift of the SPR phenomenon excited by the light transmitted in the wall of the HF sensor. Experiments of detection for DA were taken in the concentration range of 0.1 nM–
$10~\mu \text { M}$
to investigate the performance of the biosensor. The influences of concentrations of palladium chloride (PdCl2) in pretreatment and the AuNPs size were investigated to improve the performance of the HF SPR sensor. The experimental results showed that the limit of detection (LOD) for DA achieved as low as 0.1 nM. The presented HF SPR sensor with a dual-recognition structure based on self-assembled recognition monolayer and AuNPs shows a large potential for the detection of small biomolecules in biosensing.

A fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor based on a silver-coated hollow fiber (HF) structure for glucose detection is presented. The sensor surface was immobilized with 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (PMBA) acting as a glucose recognition monolayer. Then, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified with 2-aminoethanethiol (2-AET) and PMBA were introduced onto the sensor surface after glucose was captured to enhance the wavelength shift of the SPR phenomenon excited by the light transmitted in the wall of the HF sensor. Instead of the conventional one-step sensitization pretreatment commonly used in the deposition process of silver films for fiber-optic SPR sensors, a sensitization–activation two-step activation method was adopted in the fabrication of the proposed sensor. Experiments for glucose detection were performed on the fabricated sensors in the concentration range of 1 nM–1 mM. Results showed that the sensor fabricated by the two-step activation method has a much larger shift of resonance wavelength than the sensor fabricated using the one-step sensitization method. The resonance wavelength shift was found to be linear to the logarithm of the concentration in the range of 1 nM–1 mM. The sensor achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of as low as 1 nM, which is at least an order of magnitude lower than that of other fiber-optic sensors for glucose detection reported previously. The presented HF glucose sensor has the potential for biosensing applications and provides a large reference value in the study of optical fiber SPR sensors for biosensing.

Mercury(II) ions (Hg2+) are one of the most common and highly toxic heavy metal ions, which can contaminate the environment and damage the human health. Therefore, the precise detection of trace Hg2+ concentration is particularly important. Herein, gold nanoparticles-enhanced silver-coated hollow fiber (HF) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was developed for the highly sensitive detection of Hg2+ ions. Due to the inherent difficulty in directly detecting Hg2+ ions on the sensing surface, the advantages of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as signal amplification labels were exploited to improve the sensitivity of the sensor. In the presence of Hg2+ ions, we chemically modified the sensing silver film of the sensor with 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPY) and 4-mercaptopyridine-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs/4-MPY). Owing to the specific coordination between Hg2+ and the nitrogen of pyridine, Hg2+ could be captured by 4-MPY to form a Hg(pyridine)2 complex. After adsorption of the Hg2+ ions, the strong electromagnetic coupling between the AuNPs and the silver film led to a wavelength shift of the SPR resonance peak. Experiments for the detection of Hg2+ ions were performed in the concentration range of 5 nM to 1 μM to investigate the performance of the present sensor. The sensor achieved a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 5 nM. Moreover, the developed fiber sensor exhibited excellent performance in terms of sensitivity and repeatability. Our results show this strategy has widespread applications in the field of on-site heavy metal detection and biomedical monitoring.
