Traditional carbon materials and transition metal oxides are considered as the best candidates due to their respective advantages for the anode materials of lithium ion batteries. Herein, combining the advantages of carbon and transition metal oxides, we fabricate Co 3 O 4 doped hollow hierarchical porous carbon spheres through a simple spray pyrolysis route with cobalt nitrate and glucose as precursors. The wall thickness of hollow porous spheres can be adjusted through the ratio between cobalt nitrate and glucose. The results of electrochemical test show that the optical product maintains an excellent discharge capacity of 1297.1 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 when the molar ratio of glucose and cobalt nitrate is 6:8. In addition, the sample has a discharge specific capacity of 841.0 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 1 A g −1 . Hollow hierarchical porous structure can efficiently reduce the path of lithium ion transport, and a suitable wall thickness can support the volume change during charge and discharge. Superior charge/discharge capacity, high carbon content, high yield and low cost turn this product into a more promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Electrochemical water splitting is a promising method to generate pollution-free and sustainable hydrogen energy. However, the specific activity and durability of noble metal catalysts is the main hindrance to the hydrogen evolution reaction. Based on the continuous pore regulation of hollow porous carbon spheres (N-HPCSs) by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, the 6.21 wt% Pt/N-HPCSs exhibited good dispersibility, according to a low overpotential of 45 mV (10 mA cm−2/1 M KOH). Its mass activity was 4 times that of the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C at −0.07 V (vs. RHE) potential. We analyse that the excellent activity is due to the interaction between Pt nanoparticles and N-HPCSs so that the electron density around the Pt atoms increases, which is beneficial for H2O to obtain electrons and transform into Had. Meanwhile the sea urchin-like structure of N-HPCSs facilitates the desorption of H2. Furthermore, the overpotential showed no obvious decrease in the long-term durability test, which should be attributed to the confinement of Pt nanoparticles by the well-defined pores in N-HPCSs to avoid the aggregation of Pt nanoparticles during long-term testing.

Graphical A simple solution-based spray-drying method was successfully developed to prepare nitrogen-doped hollow porous carbon spheres (N-HPCS) using biomass lignin as a carbon precursor, cyanuric acid as an N dopant, and a porogen. The N-type doping in N-HPCS materials (especially pyrrolic-N) results in a strong Li 2 S x -N chemisorption force, which effectively suppresses the insolubility and “shuttle effect” of the infamous Li−S battery polysulfide. After 1000 cycles at 1 C, the low volume attenuation rate of each cycle is only 0.041 %. Exploring high-efficiency, long-term cycling stability, and cost-effective cathode materials for lithium-sulfur (Li−S) batteries is hugely desirable and challenging. Herein, we have successfully developed a simple solution-based spray-drying method to fabricate nitrogen-doped hollow porous carbon spheres (N-HPCS) with biomass lignin as a carbon precursor and cyanuric acid as a N-dopant and a porogen. The obtained N-HPCS shows a specific surface area of 446.2 m 2 g −1 and high-level pyrrolic-N doping of 64.13 %. The N-HPCS/S cathode has a high initial discharge capacity of 1535.1 and 1104.0 mA h g −1 at 0.1 and 1 C, respectively. In addition, the N-HPCS/S electrode exhibits outstanding cycle performance after 1000 cycles at 1 C, with a low capacity decay rate of only 0.041 % per cycle, which is superior to most of the recently reported carbon-based S cathodes. N-doping causes strong Li 2 S x −N chemical adhesion in carbon spheres, effectively suppressing the dissolution and “shuttle effect” of the notorious polysulfide of Li−S batteries, in which pyrrolic-N plays a leading role in the capture of polysulfides intermediates. This contribution is of great significance to the exploration of many other structure-property design strategies for ultralong cycle life Li−S energy storage devices.

Microstructure design combined with high-level heteroatoms doping has been considered the leading approach for preparing the high-performance carbon anodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, a hollow porous carbon sphere (NP-HPCS) that exhibits a high N, P co-doping level (6.05 at% for N, 5.19 at% for P) and a large microporous specific area (339 m 2 g −1 ) is reported. The microporous and N, P co-doping synergistic construction of the NP-HPCS was achieved by a high-efficiency chemical grafting of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) onto polydopamine (PDA) shell, accompanied by the in situ micellar transformation of pore-forming agent F127 in the grafting process. The as-prepared NP-HPCS used as an anode for SIBs delivers a superior rate capacity (~101 mAh g −1 at 20 A g −1 ) and an excellent long cycle performance (~120 mAh g −1 after 5000 cycles at 5 A g −1 ). The kinetics analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to further analyze the superior sodium storage performance of NP-HPCS. Our work suggests an effective way to develop high-performance carbon anode materials for SIBs.

Considering the natural characteristic and wide application of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), it is great urgency to design superior electrocatalysts for high-performance determination of H 2 O 2 . Herein, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) embedded into metal–organic frameworks derived hollow porous carbon spheres (HPCS) were successfully constructed and used as a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor. In this architecture, HPCS consisting of continuous hollow carbon bubbles show a highly ordered porous structure between the shells, which can not only provide a large surface area for embedding small size AgNPs and facilitating H 2 O 2 penetration, but also process remarkable electronic conductivity to facilitate the electrochemical redox reaction. The constructed sensor offers a wide linear range of 5 orders magnitude from 0.004 to 17 mM with a detection limit of 0.188 µM and a sensitivity of 637 μA mM −1 cm −2 for H 2 O 2 , as well as good selectivity, excellent reproducibility and long-term stability due to a synergistic effect between HPCS and AgNPs, which guarantees the capability, accuracy and reliability of detection H 2 O 2 in the real disinfectant sample. This work could provide an effective load matrix for encapsulating nanoparticles into hollow carbon bubbles, which examined as a superior electrocatalyst for hydrogen peroxide detection platform, showing a great potential for further application in various fields.

A novel thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane was prepared for efficient organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) by doping hollow porous carbon spheres (HPCSs) nanoparticles in polyamide separating skin-layer through interfacial polymerization and solvent activation techniques. The undoped thin film composite (TFC) membrane was also prepared for comparison. In the interfacial polymerization process, the excellent adsorption properties of HPCSs lead to the unstable diffusion of m-phenylenediamine monomers from the aqueous phase to the oil phase, resulting in the formation of a ridge-valley morphology on the membrane surface. This ridge-valley morphology can effectively increase the contact area between the membrane and the solvent, which in turn improves the permeation capacity. The as-synthesized optimal TFN-HPCSs-200 membrane exhibits superior OSN performance. The methanol permeation capacity is 11.51 L m –2 h –1 bar –1 , which was 1.42 times of that of the TFC membrane. Meanwhile, the retention rate of RDB dye for TFN-HPCSs-200 membrane is maintained at a high level (97.50%). Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the prepared TFN-HPCSs-200 membrane maintained stable solvent resistance and long-term stability after immersion in a strong polar DMF solvent at 80 °C for 5 days, implying that TFN-HPCSs membranes have potential for long-term application in industrial OSN processing.

The expansion of the operational voltage in supercapacitors (SCs) through the utilization of water-in-salt electrolytes (WISEs) has garnered considerable attention for achieving elevated energy density. However, the poor rate performance of assembled SCs persists due to the heightened viscosity of WISEs (e.g., 17.0 mol kg −1 NaClO 4 ), so designing the porous structure of electrode materials to improve the rate performance of SC in WISEs has become a research focus. In this study, we present a straightforward approach to fabricate hierarchical porous carbon spheres, designing to expedite ion infilling and transport within WISE-based SCs. The hollow porous carbon is synthesized via one-step pyrolysis process, wherein the decomposition of inner colloid particles yields gases, while the outer resorcinol–formaldehyde resin carbonizes to form a spherical shell. In the WISE of 17.0 mol kg −1 NaClO 4 , the resulting symmetric SCs exhibit an operational voltage of 2.6 V and significantly improved rate capability with a capacitance retention of 47.7 % at 100 A g −1 . Notably, the energy density can reach 31.0 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 2.4 kW kg −1 . Even under high power density conditions of 120.0 kW kg −1 , the energy density of 14.7 Wh kg −1 can remain. Additionally, the SC device manifests an impressive capacitance retention of 99.1 % after 20,000 cycles, showcasing exceptional cyclic stability. This research introduces a novel synthesis strategy for hierarchical porous carbon materials, enabling the development of high-rate SCs with both elevated energy density and power density.

This paper reports the rational assembly of novel hollow porous carbon nanospheres (HPCNSs) as the hosts of phosphorous (P) active materials for high-performance sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The vaporization-condensation process is employed to synthesize P/C composites, which is elucidated by both theories and experiments to achieve optimized designs. The combined molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations indicate that the morphologies of polymeric P 4 and the P loading in the P/C composites depend mainly on the pore size and surface condition of carbon supports. Micropores of 1–2 nm in diameter and oxygenated functional groups attached on carbon surface are essential for achieving high P loading and excellent structural stability. In light of these findings, HPCNS/amorphous red phosphorus composites with enhanced structural/functional features are synthesized, which present an extremely low volume expansion of ≈67.3% during cycles, much smaller than the commercial red P's theoretical value of ≈300%. The composite anodes deliver an exceptional sodium storage capacity and remarkable long-life cyclic stability with capacity retention over 76% after 1000 cycles. This work signifies the importance of rational design of electrode materials based on accurate theoretical predictions and sheds light on future development of cost-effective P/C composite anodes for commercially viable SIBs.

Owing to the unique structural characteristics and heteroatom doping as electrode materials for supercapacitor application, nitrogen-doped hollow porous carbon spheres (N-HPCS) have been extensively studied. However, the synthesis of N-HPCS with high nitrogen contents above 15% (mass fraction) is still a great challenge. Herein, an ethylenediamine-assisted co-assembly strategy is used to control the self-assembly between the 2,6-diaminopyridine-glyoxal Schiff base polymer precursor and the silica template, resulting in high N-content N-HPCS. The N-HPCS renders quantitatively controllable shell thickness (7–40 nm), controllable diameter of cavity (270–620 nm), high and adjustable N content (up to 15.1%, mass fraction), as well as a high ratio of beneficial N species (44.5% pyridine N and 36.7% pyridone/pyrrole N). N-HPCS exhibits excellent properties for supercapacitors with a ratio capacitance of 335 F/g at 0.2 A/g, and almost no attenuation of specific capacitance after 3000 cycles at a current density of 5 A/g, showing excellent cycle stability. The as-synthesized N-HPCS with high surface area, hollow structure and high nitrogen content exhibits broad application prospects as an advanced energy storage material.
