Chinese herbal residue (CHR) is an association of renewable resource and hazardous waste , and high nitrogen content and low energy density are two primary obstacles to its efficient and clean thermal utilization. In this paper, acid-promoted hydrothermal was employed to probe the feasibility on CHR toward enhanced solid biofuel concerning upgradation and denitrogenation. A more excellent hydrothermal promoter (H 2 SO 4 ) was demonstrated to upgrade and denitrogenate CHR with better energy (1.125) and nitrogen densities (0.586) at optimal conditions (160 °C, 0.5 N H 2 SO 4 ), which could be attributed to the improved removal of oxygen, amino and ash during acid-promoted hydrothermal. Compared to raw feedstock or the conventional hydrochar , the acid-promoted hydrochar had enhanced compositional characteristics with higher heating value (21.00 kJ·mol −1 ), lower nitrogen (1.44 wt%) and ash (11.03 wt%) contents, thus showing more stable combustion flame with a higher comprehensive combustion index of 4.861 × 10 −8 , a higher combustion stability index of 4979.342, lower combustion alkali index of 0.026, and less nitrogen gaseous pollutant emission. Thus, acid-promoted hydrothermal would be a promising way to convert CHR into much cleaner and higher-grade solid biofuel.

This study employed hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) in conjunction with ZnCl 2 activation and pyrolysis to produce biochar from one traditional Chinese medicine astragali radix (AR) residue. The resultant biochar was evaluated as a sustainable adsorbent for tetracycline (TC) elimination from water. The adsorption performance of TC on two micropore-rich AR biochars, AR@ZnCl 2 (1370 m 2 g −1 ) and HAR@ZnCl 2 (1896 m 2 g −1 ), was comprehensively evaluated using adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics. By virtue of pore diffusion, π-π interaction, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bonding, the prepared AR biochar showed exceptional adsorption properties for TC. Notably, the maximum adsorption capacity (930.3 mg g −1 ) of TC on HAR@ZnCl 2 can be achieved when the adsorbent dosage is 0.5 g L −1 and C 0 is 500 mg L −1 at 323 K. The TC adsorption on HAR@ZnCl 2 took place spontaneously. Furthermore, the impact of competitive ions behavior is insignificant when coexisting ion concentrations fall within the 10–100 mg L −1 range. Additionally, the produced biochar illustrated good economic benefits, with a payback of 701 $ t −1 . More importantly, even after ten cycles, HAR@ZnCl 2 still presented great TC removal efficiency (above 77%), suggesting a good application prosperity. In summary, the effectiveness and sustainability of AR (a Chinese medicine residue) biochar, a biowaste-derived product, were demonstrated in its ability to remove antibiotics from water, showing great potential in wastewater treatment application.

One-step carbonization was explored to prepare biochar using the residue of a traditional Chinese herbal medicine,Atropa belladonnaL. (ABL), as the raw material. The resulting biochar, known as ABLB4, was evaluated for its potential as a sustainable material for norfloxacin (NOR) adsorption in water. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis of adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics was conducted through batch adsorption experiments. The maximum calculated NOR adsorption capacity was 252.0 mg/g at 298 K, and the spontaneous and exothermic adsorption of NOR on ABLB4 could be better suited to a pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. The adsorption process observed is influenced by pore diffusion, π–π interaction, electrostatic interaction, and hydrogen bonding between ABLB4 and NOR molecules. Moreover, the utilization of response surface modeling (RSM) facilitated the optimization of the removal efficiency of NOR, yielding a maximum removal rate of 97.4% at a temperature of 304.8 K, an initial concentration of 67.1 mg/L, and a pH of 7.4. Furthermore, the biochar demonstrated favorable economic advantages, with a payback of 852.5 USD/t. More importantly, even after undergoing five cycles, ABLB4 exhibited a consistently high NOR removal rate, indicating its significant potential for application in NOR adsorption.

Biochar-immobilized microorganism technology is an effective way to remove antibiotic contamination from water bodies. In this study, three common Chinese medicine residues (forsythia, erding and honeysuckle) were selected as raw materials for pyrolysis at different temperatures. The biochar obtained was used as a carrier to immobilize the highly efficient chlortetracycline-degrading bacterium Bacillus cereus LZ01 and analyze the complex’s removal characteristics and removal mechanism chlortetracycline. The results showed that the Chinese medicine residue biochar pyrolyzed at 500 °C had a higher removal capacity for chlortetracycline and could adsorb more microorganisms. The erding medicine residue biochar (EBC-500) pyrolyzed at 500 °C possessed a more developed pore structure and suitable nutrients. And the alkalinity of EBC-500 had the effect of relieving the inhibition of bacteria by acid, providing more suitable living conditions for the growth of bacteria, and improving the removal of chlortetracycline. Orthogonal experiments determined the optimal conditions for microbial immobilization by biochar: 10% microbial inoculum, 0.5 g biochar dosage, 0.097 - 0.15 mm biochar particle size, and 36 h immobilization time. The FT-IR spectra showed that the complex integrated all functional groups of biochar and degrading bacteria. The comparison of the removal effect before and after inactivation revealed that the removal mechanism of chlortetracycline in water by the complex was mainly determined by a combination of microbial degradation and biochar surface adsorption. This study provides a method for preparing an efficient biochar–microbial complex using Chinese medicine residue waste substrate, which provides a new idea for removing chlortetracycline from water.

Traditional Chinese Herb Residues (TCHRs) contain a large number of lignocellulosic components, such as glucan (cellulose/starch), hemicellulose, and lignin, which can be fully utilized to avoid resource wasting and environmental pollution. Herein, we chose 40 typical TCHRs to measure their lignocellulosic contents and degraded the TCHRs containing high dextran components to prepare glucose or anhydro-sugars. The average lignocellulosic content of 40 typical TCHRs was 71.48 ± 13.30% and 25 TCHRs’ lignocellulosic contents were more than 70%. Based on the lignocellulosic content and ratio of total structural carbohydrates to lignin content, 40 typical TCHRs can be divided into four categories for sugar-producing, bio-char forming, composting, and incineration. 11 TCHRs were screened for glucose preparation by enzymolysis or acidolysis, and anhydro-sugars preparation in polar aprotic solvents. The average yield of glucose from 7 starch-rich TCHRs was 87.3% by enzymolysis, and the average yield of glucose from 4 cellulose-rich TCHRs was 58.0% by acidolysis. The total carbon yield of anhydro-sugars from 7 TCHRs was over 60%. These results and classification principles have instructive significance for discharging and utilizing TCHRs. Graphical Abstract

In this study, one well-known CHM residue (Atropa belladonna L., ABL) was used to prepare biochar capable of adsorbing rhodamine B (RhB) with an ultrahigh surface area for the first time. Three micropore-rich ABL biochars including ABL@ZnCl2 (1866 m2/g), ABL@H3PO4 (1488 m2/g), and ABL@KOH (590 m2/g) were obtained using the one-step carbonization method with activation agents (ZnCl2, H3PO4, and KOH) via chemical activation and carbonization at 500 °C, and their adsorption performance for RhB was systematically studied with adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics. Through pore diffusion, π–π interaction, and hydrogen bonding, ABL biochar had excellent adsorption performance for RhB. Moreover, when C0 was 200 mg/L, biochar dosage was 1 g/L, and the contact time was 120 min; the maximum RhB adsorption capacity and removal efficiency on ABL@ZnCl2 and ABL@H3PO4 were 190.63 mg/g, 95% and 184.70 mg/g, 92%, respectively, indicating that it was feasible to prepare biochar from the ABL residue for RhB adsorption. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of ABL@ZnCl2 and ABL@H3PO4 for RhB were 263.19 mg/g and 309.11 mg/g at 25 °C, respectively. Furthermore, the prepared biochar showed good economic applicability, with pay back of USD 972/t (ABL@ZnCl2) and USD 987/t (ABL@H3PO4), respectively. More importantly, even after five cycles, ABL@H3PO4 biochar still showed great RhB removal efficiency, suggesting that it had a good application prospect and provided a new method for the resource utilization of traditional CHM residues. Additionally, pore diffusion, π–π interactions, and hydrogen bonding all play roles in the physical adsorption of RhB on ABL biochar. π–π interactions dominated in the early stage of RhB adsorption on ABL@H3PO4, while pore diffusion played a crucial role in the whole adsorption process on both adsorbents.

Pyrolysis is a research hotspot for realizing Chinese Herb residue (CHR) treatment and resource utilization, but there is little reported about in-situ no support catalytic pyrolysis of CHR. In this work, kinetics and no support catalytic pyrolysis characteristics of CHR were studied using a thermogravimetric analyzer and a fix-bed reactor system, respectively. Three groups: Ni-Fe, Ni-Cu and Ni-Co add into CHR and three kinetic methods: Coats-Redfern (CR) method, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method and Distributed Activation Energy Model(DAEM)use for calculate the activation energy, then analyses the gas, bio-oil and char of CHR pyrolysis. The results show that, catalysts can reduce the pyrolysis reaction activation energy. In FWO and DAEM model, the reaction activation energy will increase sharply if the conversion over 0.7. Compare with no catalyst group, add catalyst can restrain gas generation but good for oil production and char formation. Meanwhile, the surface of char is smoother than no catalyst. After test the char, we find that, metals of Ni, Fe, Cu and Co almost enrich in char, which may reuse as catalytic. This study may provide a feasible direction for the industrial application of CHR.

A straightforward and environmentally sustainable hydrothermal synthesis approach is introduced for creating carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from the Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) residue, with thorough studies on their structural and optical characteristics. A considerable quantum yield (QY) of 62.0 % and a blue-violet fluorescence were observed in the prepared CQDs. They possess excellent photoluminescence, high solubility in water, and good dispersibility, averaging 3.01 nm in size. Interestingly, the obtained CQDs can be served as a turn-off probe for Fe 3+ /Hg 2+ as well as a turn-on probe for norfloxacin (NOR). Additionally, the limits of detection (LODs) for Fe 3+ , Hg 2+ , and NOR were measured at 0.48 μM, 1.67 μM, and 0.80 μM, respectively, which were markedly superior to those previously reported for CQDs, demonstrating their effectiveness in detecting Fe 3+ , Hg 2+ and NOR in aqueous solutions. The fluorescence quenching of Fe 3+ and Hg 2+ was primarily attributed to the IFE and PET, respectively. In contrast, the fluorescence enhancement associated with NOR was predominantly due to hydrogen bonding interactions between CQDs and NOR, as well as the formation of complexes. The cytotoxicity assay revealed a cell viability rate exceeding 85 % at a concentration of 200 μg/mL, suggesting that the prepared CQDs have acceptable biocompatibility. This method proved successful in determining Fe 3+ , Hg 2+ and NOR in tap and river water samples, suggesting good application prosperity of the CQDs-based probe.

The synergistic activation of persulfate by multiple factors could degrade pollutants more efficiently. However, the co-activation method based on metal ions has the risk of leakage . The non-metallic coupling method could achieve the same efficiency as the metal activation and meanwhile release environmental stress. In this study, the original biochar (BC) was prepared through using Chinese medicinal residue of Acanthopanax senticosus as the precursor. Compared with other biochar, the pore size structure was higher and toxicity risk was lower. The ultrasonic (US)/ Acanthopanax senticosus biochar (ASBC)/persulfate oxidation system was established for Atrazine (ATZ). Results showed that 45KHz in middle and low frequency band cooperated with ASBC600 to degrade nearly 70 % of ATZ within 50 min, and US promoted the formation of SO 4 − and OH. Meanwhile, the synergy index of US and ASBC was calculated to be 1.18, which showed positive synergistic effect. Finally, the potential toxicity was examined by using Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and luminescent bacteria. This study provides a promising way for the activation of persulfate, which is expected to bring a new idea for the win-win situation of pollutant degradation and solid waste resource utilization.

The valorization of Chinese medicine residues (CMRs) into high-value-added products, such as microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), has garnered significant interest in the current post-pandemic era, particularly in regions where Chinese medicine (CM) is widely utilized (i.e., Southeast Asia). In this study, we propose a facile and economical protocol for selectively extracting MCC from CMRs via one-step direct peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation without the need for intricate steps. Importantly, our proposed protocol has been verified to be versatile and can be applied to various solid waste sources rich in cellulose, with an average extraction rate of 75%. Analysis using the Fukui index revealed that the β-O-4 bond, the aromatic ring in lignin, specific O sites in hemicellulose, and the amorphous region of cellulose are more susceptible to electrophilic attack by PMS than to reactions involving HO • , SO 4 •− , or 1 O 2 . Leveraging this distinct mechanism, the extracted MCC demonstrated ultrahigh purity (∼95%) and crystallinity (∼85.36%). Overall, our work involves transforming solid waste into high-value products through the provision of a technical solution, with the potential for onsite application. This represents a significant advancement to the valorization of CMRs, particularly in providing theoretical guidance for accelerating the recycling of waste materials.
