Thermal energy storage (TES) systems with phase change materials (PCMs) can efficiently address the intermittency and uneven distribution of solar energy. However, easy leakage, inherent rigidity, and poor photothermal conversion capacity greatly limits their practical utilization. Herein, a novel shape-stabilized composite PCMs with heat-induced flexibility and excellent photothermal conversion efficiency was prepared by impregnating a mixture of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) into cuttlefish ink (CI) melanin decorated melamine foam (MF). To promote its long-term stability, a physical barrier of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating was applied to its surface. Finally, a series of innovative PEO/PEG@CI/MF-PDMS (PPCMP) PCMs with different concentrations of CI were successfully fabricated. The PPCMP composite PCMs possess high quality retention (94.39–97.45 %) when heated at 80 °C and flexibility when heated or light irradiated, indicating their excellent anti-leakage performance and heat-induced flexibility. And the incorporation of CI-derived melanin has endowed PPCMP composite PCMs with remarkable photothermal conversion efficiencies (83.26–93.67 %) due to its wide light absorption. More importantly, the optimized PPCMP composite exhibits a satisfactory melting enthalpy (>160 J/g) and high enthalpy efficiency (>80 %). Moreover, PDMS coating imparts the composites with outstanding hydrophobicity (WCA>100°), and PPCMP demonstrates thermal stability below 100 °C and reliability after multiple cycles. Based on the above merits, this work offers a prospective strategy for constructing shape-stabilized and flexible PCMs with excellent photothermal conversion and energy storage performance for practical applications in personal thermal management and flexible electronics.

Natural superoxide dismutase (SOD), consisting of proteins and metal cofactors, is widely used in food preservation because of its good antioxidant activity. However, due to the poor stability of SOD enzyme, its activity was reduced in the process of moving into the film, resulting in limited application. Based on the structure of the active site of the natural enzyme, Cu 2+ was used to functionalize the melanin nanoparticles (NMPs) in ink of cuttlefish, and an SOD-like nanozyme (Cu-NMPs) with high stability, high activity and strong free radical scavenging capacity was constructed. In order to apply the constructed simulated enzyme to food preservation, the simulated enzyme was embedded into carrageenan (Carr) films to prepare the composite film for food packaging. The results showed that when the concentration of Cu-NMPs was 10 μg/mL, the ·O 2 – rate could reach more than 80 %, the activity exceeded that of 60 U/mL natural SOD. In addition, the fresh-keeping test of cherry tomatoes showed that Carr/Cu-NMPs composite film extended the storage time of cherry tomatoes by more 3 days. Therefore, the present work showed that nanozymes with advanced catalytic capabilities can be constructed by metal ions and NMPs, thus successfully combined with food packaging for food preservation.

Current approaches to managing diabetic oral ulcers are often inadequate in medical settings due to risks of bacterial contamination, oxidative harm, and hindered blood vessel growth during recovery. Here, we have developed a hydrogel (OQC2) consisting of oxidized dextran, quaternized chitosan, and melanin nanoparticles sourced from cuttlefish ink to effectively treat wounds from diabetic oral ulcers. Initially, by administering a straightforward local injection, a protection barrier forms over the mucosal injury, promptly stopping bleeding and neutralizing inflammatory agents. The OQC2 excels in innate antibacterial activity and can effectively remove reactive oxygen species, aiding in bacterial eradication and managing oxidative states, thereby hastening the wound's transition from inflammation to tissue growth. Moreover, the OQC2 features a three-dimensional structure made up of elements sourced from natural materials, potentially making it an excellent resource for providing structural and nutritional support to cells. This support encourages cell attachment, movement, and growth, as well as further blood vessel formation in the process of mucosal remodeling. Both in vitro and in vivo trials indicate that the OQC2 significantly speeds up the repair of mucosal wounds, presenting a viable option for treating diabetic oral ulcers.

Lymphatic metastasis plays an important role in malignant tumor invasion. Efficient identification of sentinel lymph node (SLN) is extremely significant for designing therapeutic strategies and assessing prognosis. In this work, we developed a natural cuttlefish melanin nanoprobe for the preoperative and intraoperative evaluation of lymphatic metastasis. The cuttlefish melanin nanoparticle could improve the water-solubility and biocompatibility of the near-infrared-II (NIR-II) dye, and extend the retention time of small molecule dye. The NIR-II imaging results verified that the nanoparticles have a high accumulation, high sensitivity, and high signal-to-noise ratio in the lymphatic system . Moreover, the nanoparticles have obvious naked-eye identification potential due to their natural brownish-black color. Additionally, the nanoparticles can combine with Gd ions to achieve preoperative lymphatic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The results of this study provide a unique approach to effectively identify and accurately remove lymph nodes before operation and during surgery, exhibiting tremendous potential in clinical translation.

Existing methods for treating diabetic oral ulcers often fall short in clinical environments due to potential bacterial contamination, oxidative harm, and hindered angiogenesis throughout the healing process. Here, a hydrogel patch (HYG2) have been developed for local in situ application. HYG2 comprises oxidized pullulan, quaternized chitosan, and eumelanin nanoparticles derived from cuttlefish ink. These components work together to efficiently heal wounds associated with diabetic oral ulcers. Application begins with a simple local injection that quickly forms a protective barrier over the mucosa, effectively stopping bleeding and counteracting inflammatory agents. HYG2 is distinguished by its strong antibacterial properties and capacity to eliminate reactive oxygen species, promoting bacteria clearance and managing oxidative stress, which accelerates the healing phase from inflammation to tissue regeneration. Additionally, HYG2's 3D structure, incorporating elements from natural sources, offers exemplary support for structural and nutritional cell needs. This enhancement fosters cell adhesion, migration, and proliferation, along with further angiogenesis during mucosal remodeling. Ultimately, HYG2 is fully absorbed by the body after serving its therapeutic functions. Evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies shows that HYG2 hydrogel markedly accelerates mucosal wound repair, making it a promising treatment for diabetic oral ulcers.

Oral ulcers can be managed using a variety of biomaterials that deliver drugs or cytokines. However, many patients experience minimal benefits from certain medical treatments because of poor compliance, short retention times in the oral cavity, and inadequate drug efficacy. Herein, we present a novel hydrogel patch (SCE2) composed of a biopolymer matrix (featuring ultraviolet-triggered adhesion properties) loaded with cuttlefish ink nanoparticles (possessing pro-healing functions). Applying a straightforward local method initiates the formation of a hydrogel barrier that adheres to mucosal injuries under the influence of ultraviolet light. SCE2 then demonstrates exceptional capabilities for near-infrared photothermal sterilization and neutralization of reactive oxygen species. These properties contribute to the elimination of bacteria and the management of the oxidation process, thus accelerating the healing phase's progression from inflammation to proliferation. In studies involving diabetic rats with oral ulcers, the SCE2 adhesive patch significantly quickens recovery by altering the inflamed state of the injured area, facilitating rapid re-epithelialization, and fostering angiogenesis. In conclusion, this light-sensitive hydrogel patch offers a promising path to expedited wound healing, potentially transforming treatment strategies for clinical oral ulcers.
