In this work, a conductive catalytic redox hydrogel composed of aniline and vinyl-ferrocene was prepared which showed good conductivity and strong electrochemical redox signal at 0.04 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The hydrogel was simply generated in situ on the glassy carbon electrode to fabricate an amperometric immunosensor. The redox hydrogel provided a three dimensional porous structure, which improved the specific surface area of modified electrode. Based on the catalytic activity of ferrocene toward the oxidation of ascorbic acid, the electrochemical signal can be amplified. Gold nanoparticles were modified on the redox hydrogel by electrochemical deposition to promote electron transfer, which also can immobilize antibody. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a significant indicator of prostate cancer, had been measured as a model tumor marker. Under the optimized conditions, a linear range of the prostate specific antigen concentrations from 0.001 to 200 ng mL −1 with a detection limit of 0.54 pg mL −1 ((S/N) = 3) was obtained. Importantly, the detection of PSA in the human blood serum samples showed satisfactory accuracy with the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay results, which showed the redox hydrogel possessed huge potential for the detection of other tumor markers.
Ionic-conductive polymers are appealing electrolyte materials for solid-state lithium-based batteries. However, these polymers are detrimentally affected by the electrochemically-inactive anion migration that limits the ionic conductivity and accelerates cell failure. To circumvent this issue, we propose the use of polyvinyl ferrocene (PVF) as positive electrode active material. The PVF acts as an anion-acceptor during redox processes, thus simultaneously setting anions and lithium ions as effective charge carriers. We report the testing of various Li||PVF lab-scale cells using polyethylene oxide (PEO) matrix and Li-containing salts with different anions. Interestingly, the cells using the PEO-lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) solid electrolyte deliver an initial capacity of 108 mAh g −1 at 100 μA cm −2 and 60 °C, and a discharge capacity retention of 70% (i.e., 70 mAh g −1 ) after 2800 cycles at 300 μA cm −2 and 60 °C. The Li|PEO-LiTFSI|PVF cells tested at 50 μA cm −2 and 30 °C can also deliver an initial discharge capacity of around 98 mAh g −1 with an electrolyte ionic conductivity in the order of 10 −5 S cm −1 .
Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films are widely used in intelligent opto-electronic field owing to their electrically switchable properties. Previous studies have focused on the improvement of electro-optical properties of PDLC film in visible light bands; yet, the application of PDLC in other bands has few research. In this paper, vinylferrocene was introduced into PDLC films containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) to improve UV-shielding properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies revealed that vinylferrocene was uniformly dispersed in the polymer network. The structure could improve the electro-optical properties of PDLC film. The effect of temperature on PDLC film was studied. When the temperature reached 35°C, the PDLC composite film polymer network had better electro-optical properties. The PDLC composite films can effectively shield 86.73% UV light at on-state and 93.37% at off-state. The unique UV-shielding properties make this PDLC film a great application potential in smart windows. This PDLC combined with POSS and vinylferrocene film also exhibits large-area processability, which can further expand its application.
