Planar hole-transport-layer (HTL)-free carbon-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) exhibit notable advantages such as low cost and improved environmental compatibility. However, their practical applications are hindered by a relatively low efficiency and poor stability. The establishment of a buried interface architecture can effectively enhance the long-term stability of the C-PSC devices. Nevertheless, defect generation during perovskite formation and associated nonradiative carrier recombination remain challenges. Herein, we introduce a bidirectional coordination strategy utilizing ammonium acetate (CH3COONH4) to passivate the tin dioxide (SnO2) surface. The CH3COONH4 treatment facilitates SnO2 oxygen vacancy passivation via interactions between CH3COO– groups and Sn4+ cations. Simultaneously, perovskite defects are effectively mitigated by the combination of CH3COO– with uncoordinated Pb2+ and the formation of N–H···I– hydrogen bonds. These interactions provide a promising foundation for perovskite crystal growth and promote vertical crystallization. Additionally, a favorable buried interface between the perovskite and underlying SnO2 layer effectively minimizes nonradiative recombination losses. Benefiting from these merits, C-PSC devices with CH3COONH4-passivated SnO2 achieved a maximum PCE of 15.5% and demonstrated exceptional operational stability, exceeding 1000 h under ambient conditions. This synergistic bidirectional coordination strategy provides an effective route for fabricating efficient and durable C-PSC devices.

The resource utilization of phosphogypsum (PG), a calcium-rich solid waste, still requires urgent attention. Identifying alternative calcium sources to replace traditional ones remains a critical challenge for MICP. This study proposes a novel approach to activate PG as an alternative calcium source for MICP. It systematically analyzes various activators for Ca²⁺ extraction, assesses the feasibility and environmental benefits, and investigates the underlying mechanisms of Ca²⁺ release. The results indicate that the optimal conditions for extracting Ca²⁺ from PG are a 1 mol/L sodium gluconate solution with a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:20, reacting at 30°C for 30 min. Ammonium acetate and sodium gluconate activators can convert CaSO₄·2H₂O into more easily soluble CaSO₄·0.5H₂O and structurally stable CaSO₄, respectively. The concentrations of heavy metals in the MICP solutions with activated PG calcium sources all comply with the concentration limits. All activators facilitate the formation of calcite precipitates in the bio-mineralization process, with the MICP efficiency of sodium gluconate-extracted PG calcium sources approaching 100 %. The activation mechanisms of PG can be categorized as ion exchange (chloride salts), complexation and ion exchange (ammonium acetate), and chelation and ion exchange (sodium gluconate). This study provides new insights into the application of PG in MICP.

The charge storage processes of heteroatom–doped carbon materials with small mesopores (2 ∼ 4 nm) occur by both double–layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance. Yet, owing to the ambiguous understanding on how electrolyte ions affect their capacitive behavior, it is hard to form a unified design principle to guide the selection of electrolytes, with the purpose of boosting supercapacitors. Herein, an all–in–one carbon electrode with abundant oxygen–containing groups and an average pore size of 2.5 nm was used as a model electrode to investigate the capacitive behavior of this class of carbon materials. It is found that in ammonium acetate aqueous electrolyte the model electrode shows a significantly increased specific capacitance, and an ion exchange mechanism dominates charge storage. Acetate anions with a larger ion radius can better match small mesopores in size and thus increase double–layer capacitance due to the suppression of the “over–screening” effect in the first adsorbed layer on carbon surfaces. Besides, ammonium cations forms hydrogen bonds with oxygen–containing groups maximizing the Gibbs free energy change related to faradic reactions, which enhances pseudocapacitance. Our work elaborated the effect of electrolyte ions on the capacitance of heteroatom–doped carbon materials with small mesopores and provided new understanding on designing high–performance aqueous supercapacitors.

In this paper, we reported a facile approach for the preparation of sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon nanoparticles (S,N-CNPs) with strong blue luminescence, which exhibited multiple applications including metal ion detection, logic gate fabrication and bioimaging. S,N-CNPs were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal treatment of formamidine sulfinic acid (FAS) and ethylene glycol. The as-synthesized S,N-CNPs possess a high quantum yield (Φ = 69.04%) and display excellent photostability and storage stability. By modulating the pH environment, S,N-CNPs were successfully applied as fluorescent probes for the detection of three kinds of heavy metal ions (Hg2+, Ag+ and Ni2+). The fabricated fluorescence sensors display ultrahigh sensitivity and a wider signal response range. More importantly, ethylenediamine (or ammonium thioglycolate and glycine) could efficiently release Hg2+ (or Ag+ and Ni2+) from the S,N-CNP surface, leading to the recovery of the fluorescence. According to this phenomenon, interesting implication (IMP) logic gates were constructed. In addition, the S,N-CNPs exhibited low toxicity, good biocompatibility and easy cellular uptake behavior. Consequently, the obtained S,N-CNPs will have potential applications in multiple fields of environmental monitoring, logic gate operation, and cell bioimaging.

Persistent antibiotic residues, such as tetracycline (TC), in mariculture wastewater pose significant challenges during the photocatalytic degradation process, including the high salinity-induced occupation of active sites and the high-energy light-induced energy consumption. Herein, a novel hydrophobic porous zinc‑silicon hybrid material (Zn-Si@SMS) was rapidly synthesized at room temperature through H 2 O-assisted grinding of sodium methylsilicate and zinc acetate. The low surface energy groups (–CH 3 ) endow Zn-Si@SMS with hydrophobicity, which facilitates selective pollutant adsorption in saline environments, solving the common issue of salt ion interference. Additionally, oxygen vacancies can enhance visible light absorption and charge carrier separation, thus enabling the direct utilization of visible light. It can also enhance the adsorption of tetracycline, thereby improving degradation efficiency. Specifically, under visible light and in a high-salt environment, Zn-Si@SMS achieves high degradation efficiencies for tetracycline (removal rate >96.2 %). Zn-Si@SMS demonstrates high efficiency in degradation of various antibiotics (tetracycline (removal rate >98.5 %), oxytetracycline (removal rate >96.6 %), doxycycline hydrochloride (removal rate >97.4 %), ciprofloxacin (removal rate >87.5 %), and norfloxacin (removal rate >94.9 %) in highly saline water (NaCl, KNO 3 , KCl, CaCl 2 , NaBr, Na 2 SO 4 ) under natural sunlight and 96 % removal rate in actual seawater within 1 h. This system avoids the use of costly metals (Bi, Cu, In, Ag) and high-temperature synthesis processes (>120 °C). The affordability of Zn-Si@SMS highlights the potential of tetracycline degradation by visible light, offering a green and sunlight-driven solution for water purification.

Visible light-driven degradation of chlorophenols using metal-free photocatalysts has attracted significant attention. Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) exhibited high levels of visible-light activity. To address the challenges of insufficient redox capacity and recombination of photogenerated carriers of COFs, an S-scheme heterojunction is constructed from COFs with nitrogen vacancies modified graphitic carbon nitride (NVCN) to improve photocatalytic activity. Introducing electron donors (-OH and -C C) into COF could reduce the optical band gap and increase visible-light absorption. Meanwhile, they can form donor-acceptor (D-A) effects with nitrogen vacancies, thereby redistributing charge and enhancing the transfer rate of photogenerated electrons. Formation of S-scheme heterojunction effectively enhances the migration of photogenerated carriers and redox ability, the optimized heterojunction (COF-C C/NVCN) was able to degrade 98 % 4-chlorophenol within 90 min under visible light irradiation ( k = 0.044 min –1 ), which was 10–12 times higher than COF-H/NVCN or NVCN. This study provides the great potential of D-A COF/NVCN-based S-scheme heterojunctions for environmental remediation.

Previous studies have developed numerous peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation technologies and demonstrated remarkable decontamination efficiency for emerging contaminants represented by antibiotics in aqueous environments. However, most research has focused on investigating the decontamination effect and mechanisms using simulated solutions prepared with pure water, lacking in-depth exploration of actual wastewater treatment efficacy and mechanisms. In this study, practical aquaculture wastewater from a shrimp culture farm was selected, innovatively leveraging its high salinity characteristics to reveal the endogenous Cl − /PMS self-activation pathway for hypochlorous acid (HClO) generation. Results show that the inherent chloride and cobalt ions in the wastewater react with PMS to form active species, achieving sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation efficiency that surpasses systems with externally added catalysts. Through radical quenching experiments, specific probes, and electron paramagnetic resonance technology, the active species in the endogenous substances/PMS system were identified as HClO and Co(IV) = O, with contribution ratios determined to be about 80 % and 20 % respectively. Combined with density functional theory calculations and intermediate analysis, the Cl − mediated PMS activation pathway and SMX degradation intermediate formation routes were elucidated. Finally, the system also enabled synchronous removal of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARBs). This study provides new insights into utilizing endogenous pollutants and mechanistic interpretation during PMS-based treatment of practical wastewater, and develops a new idea of “waste treats waste” strategies.

In Fenton-like reactions, the elevation of the spin state of transition metals enhances the redox processes of adsorbed peroxides and improves the oxidative performance. This study reports an easily accessible carbon-supported high-spin cobalt cluster, Co–NCs/C, which demonstrates enhanced kinetics through selective high-valent cobalt-oxo species (Co(IV)═O) generation for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-induced catalytic oxidation. This catalyst achieves rapid degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within the modified kinetic rate constant (k-value) of 2001.7, surpassing all previously reported Co-based catalysts. Furthermore, combined experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations demonstrate the stable size distribution of cobalt clusters anchored on carbon supports. Within a broad size distribution (0–6 nm), these clusters consistently retain high-spin configurations and exhibit excellent catalytic performance in SMX degradation. The tailored electronic structure of the high-spin Co sites enhances the adsorption and activation of PMS, thereby accelerating the degradation process. This work provides a practical and cost-effective strategy for designing high-efficiency catalysts for PMS-based advanced oxidation processes.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) accumulation and increasing drought events pose threats to agricultural ecosystem safety. However, the mechanisms by which post-drought rehydration (PDR) modulates compensatory PFAS migration at the soil–water interface remain unclear. To address this, this study investigated PFAS translocation across overlying water (OW), soil solution, soil microbe-adsorbed fraction (SM), and other soil fractions (OF) in paddy soils under PDR conditions. The results revealed significant releases of short-chain PFASs into OW under PDR, with migration rates ranging from 2.69 to 11.07 μg/L/day. Drought further accelerated the distribution of short-chain PFASs in OW after rehydration ( β = 0.51) and inhibited their retention in SM ( β = −0.43) and OF ( β = −0.74). The compensatory migration of short-chain PFASs was regulated by both abiotic and biotic factors. In contrast, the compensatory migration of long-chain PFASs was mainly driven by biotic factors, including soil bacteria and protozoa. Soil untargeted metabolomics identified 7-chloro-L-tryptophan (associated with oxidative stress response) and N-acetyl-L-phenylalanine (associated with amino acid metabolism) as key metabolites involved in PFAS migration ( p < 0.05). Verification experiments further confirmed that these two metabolites significantly altered PFAS release at the soil–water interface ( p < 0.001). These findings provide new insights into PFAS pollution control in drought-affected paddy fields and highlight the need for targeted management strategies to ensure agricultural safety under dynamic climate conditions.

Selective ammoxidation of sp 3 -hybridized C-H bonds is very important in the pharmaceutical and fine-chemical industries. However, simultaneous activation of the C-H bond and ammonia is difficult due to the competitive adsorption of ammonia and hydrocarbons on metal sites, which poisons the catalyst. In this study, we report an atomically dispersed rhodium (Rh) catalyst supported on manganese oxide nanorod that exhibited high activity and selectivity for the C-H bond ammoxidation under mild reaction conditions, outperforming the conventional supported metal catalysts and homogeneous manganese catalysts under the equivalent conditions. Mechanistic studies reveal that the manganese oxide nanorod with potassium ions in the tunnels significantly hindered the ammonia poisoning to Rh, providing free Rh sites for C-H bond activation and enhancing the ammonia-resistance of the catalyst. This work provides an opportunity to improve the efficiency of industrially important reactions that suffer from catalyst deactivation due to surface poisoning.

Brevetoxins (BTXs), lipophilic cyclic polyether neurotoxins released by Karenia brevis during harmful algal blooms, pose significant ecological and public health threats through seawater contamination and trophic accumulation. Despite their importance, direct detection of BTXs in seawater remains largely unexplored due to trace-level concentrations and severe matrix interferences. BTX-1, a representative toxin with well-defined structure and high stability, serves as a model compound. Here, we report the novel analytical strategy for BTX-1 determination in seawater, enabled by yolk–shell phosphorus-doped carbon nanocages (Y-Co/P-NCNCs) as high-performance magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) sorbents. The unique yolk–shell architecture provides dual external–internal diffusion pathways that shorten transport distances and accelerate adsorption kinetics, while phosphorus doping introduces polar defects and structural heterogeneity that enhance specific interactions with BTX-1 molecules. Coupled with HPLC–MS/MS, the developed MSPE protocol achieved high enrichment efficiency, excellent selectivity, and rapid recovery, with recoveries of 83.5% to 105.4%, limits of detection down to 5.0 pg mL⁻¹, and relative standard deviations below 11.8%. This work not only establishes a robust platform for trace BTX-1 monitoring in seawater but also demonstrates a generalizable materials design strategy for yolk–shell heteroatom-doped carbons in the enrichment of bulky, hydrophobic marine toxins from complex environmental matrices.

A novel nanocomposite consisting of core (Cu)-shell (Ag) nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon nanotubes (CTs) grown on a MOF-derived carbon framework was synthesized by in-situ pyrolyzing method. After further modification with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), a hierarchical porous carbon network confined core (Cu)-shell (Ag) bimetal (Cu@Ag@CTs/MWCNTs) with excellent catalytic properties to isoproturon (ISO) and norfloxacin (NOR) was obtained. The electrochemical sensor based on the Cu@Ag@CTs/MWCNTs can simultaneously detect the ISO and NOR with excellent sensitivity, good selectivity and perfect stability as well as a separation of peak potential of 270 mV. The calibration curves for ISO and NOR achieved by the proposed sensor range from 80 nM to 18 μM and 7.0 nM to 1.7 μM with detection limits of 26 nM and 2.0 nM, respectively. Moreover, the sensor shows good recoveries in simultaneous detection of ISO and NOR in real sample analysis, highlighting its high feasibility in practical application.
