Porous titanium scaffolds with high porosity and connected macropores are fabricated by adding zirconium acetate to control the ice crystal growth during freeze casting. The influences of zirconium acetate additives on the phase composition, pore structure, and mechanical properties of porous titanium are studied. As modified by zirconium acetate, the X-ray diffraction peaks of titanium moves to a smaller angle, and the zirconium is evenly distributed on the titanium matrix. With the increase in the concentration of zirconium from 0 to 60 g L −1 , the pore morphology of porous titanium changes from typical lamellar to the honeycomb, the pore size distribution becomes wider. The average pore size and porosity increases from 44 ± 11 to 126 ± 35 μm and from 46.4 ± 1.3 to 59.1 ± 1.3%, respectively. As the concentration of zirconium acetate is 40 g L −1 , the porosity and the pore size of the porous titanium scaffolds are comparable with those modified by 10 g L −1 zirconium acetate, but the compressive strength is 2.3 times higher. Zirconium acetate as an additive has an excellent performance in optimizing the pore structure and mechanical properties of water-based freeze-cast porous titanium.

Polyaceticzirconium (PEZ) sol, which is the precursor of zirconia (ZrO 2 ) continuous fibers, has been synthesized by means of the reaction between zirconium oxychloride octahydrate (ZrOCl 2 ·8H 2 O) and potassium acetate (CH 3 COOK) in methanol. The polymeric structures and the rheological behaviors of the sols with different molar ratios of ZrOCl 2 ·8H 2 O/CH 3 COOK are different and would affect the spinnability and stability significantly. Herein, the polymeric structures and rheological behaviors of the PEZ sols with the molar ratios of 1:1, 1:1.5, 1:1.8 and 1:2 were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum ( 1 H-NMR), thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) and rheological measurements. The results showed the carboxyl group acted as a chelating ligand instead of bidentate ligand, and the water molecule coordinated to Zr 4+ was deprotoned gradually with the decrease of the molecular ratios. The different polymeric structures lead to a different rheological behaviors of the sols. It is divided into three types, the Newton fluid with a low viscosity produced by the charged linear polymeric structures, the shear thinning fluid with a high viscosity produced by the three-dimensional polymeric structures and the shear thinning fluids with a proper viscosity produced by the linear twining polymeric structures. Through the experimental guidance, we successfully synthesized a sol with suitable viscosity and stability, and used it to fabricate high quality ZrO 2 fibers.

According to the relationship between unit size and wavelength, electromagnetic waves (EMWs) in metacomposites can be effectively absorbed through inherent loss mechanisms. However, limited loss ability has emerged as a primary obstacle to achieving efficient EMW absorption (EMWA) performance. The challenge of enhancing the attenuation of corresponding metacomposites remains important. In this study, we prepared elaborate titanium nitride/reduced graphene oxide units with controllable conductivities and sizes, which formed the microwave antireflective surface of metacomposites. This configuration contributes to improved impedance matching and reduced temperature sensitivity concerning EMWA performance. More importantly, EMWs experience repeated collisions and loss, along with multiple reflections and scattering within metacomposites. This phenomenon extends the transmission pathways of EMWs, thereby increasing additional loss capacity. Consequently, these metacomposites exhibited exceptional EMWA performance across a broad temperature range (298 to 573 K), while maintaining a low filler content of 1.0 wt% units. Henceforth, our findings not only provide an advantageous pathway for high design flexibility in EMWA but also pave the way for new research directions and possibilities regarding advanced lightweight metacomposites that optimize EMWA over an extensive temperature range.

Ceramic nanofibrous aerogels exhibit exceptional thermal stability, outstanding elasticity, and ultralow thermal conductivity, making them promising candidates for thermal insulation under extreme conditions. However, their practical applications are hindered by the complexity of the fabrication processes required to achieve balanced mechanical and insulating properties. Herein, we propose a simple self-assembly strategy based on directional negative pressure-assisted arrangement and capillary force-induced infiltration growth for constructing a ceramic nanofibrous aerogel with a microlamellar structure. The resulting aerogels exhibit a low density (47.2 mg/cm3), remarkable compressibility (60% strain recovery under 138.3 kPa stress), high thermal insulation (the thermal conductivity is 0.035 W/(m·K)), and outstanding high-temperature resistance (up to 1200 °C). This facile self-assembly strategy eliminates the need for energy-intensive post-treatments and complex templating agents, which provides an innovative and effective way to develop mechanically robust, highly thermally insulating ceramic aerogels for harsh-environment applications.

Existing separation technologies struggle to separate nanosized oil droplets from highly stabilized emulsions to address the water supply shortage, exhibiting an inherent shortcoming of poor permeability and severe oil fouling. Herein, we presented a microscale channel of ceramic membranes with a piezoelectric semiconductor microsphere skin constructed of hydrophobic nanodomains and rich oxygen vacancies. The sprinkled hydrophobic nanodomains acted as “oil capturing tentacles”, facilitating the efficient coalescence of oil droplets and preventing the formation of oil cake layer. The obtained membranes with microchannels could efficiently separate 16 types of oil-in-water nano/submicrometer-emulsions, achieving an ultrahigh permeation flux of up to 6550 L·m −2 ·h −1 with the separation efficiency exceeding 99.85%. Additionally, oily foulants on the membrane undergo degradation by piezotronic effect-enhanced photocatalysts, where piezoelectric-induced band bending drives highly efficient separation of photogenerated carriers, markedly boosting oil degradation with a nearly 99.5% flux recovery of the membrane. This research pioneers new pathways to advance membrane separation and environmental remediation for real-world applications.

Coordination-induced reconstruction enables high-flux PU NF membranes. • Zr 4+ selectively disrupts hydrogen-bonding networks in PU layer. • Spatial reconstruction creates free volume while preserving selectivity. • 21% higher permeance with >95% rejection under acidic conditions. • Decouples permeability–stability trade-off via simple post-modification. Polyurea membranes exhibit exceptional acid-base tolerance due to their densely cross-linked structure and extensive hydrogen-bonding network, making them attractive for separations under extreme pH conditions. However, the tightly associated network also leads to limited free volume, resulting in low water permeability that hinders practical applications. Herein, we report a permeance-enhanced polyurea nanofiltration membrane fabricated via coordination-induced structural reconstruction. By introducing Zr 4+ into the polyurea network, coordination interactions with urea groups partially disrupt interchain hydrogen bonding, leading to network loosening and additional free volume. As a result, the water permeance is increased by 21% without compromising selectivity. Meanwhile, incorporation of Zr 4+ enhances membrane hydrophilicity and surface positive charge, which therefore improves antifouling properties and promotes the rejection of heavy metal ions. Importantly, the reconstructed membrane retains excellent acid resistance, maintaining a stable salt rejection above 95% over 720 h. This work provides a simple yet effective strategy to overcome the permeability-stability trade-off in polyurea membranes and offers new insights into coordination-mediated regulation of polymer network structures for high-performance separations under harsh conditions. Benefiting from strong Lewis acidic Zr 4+ sites and abundant surface-active hydroxyl groups, Zr(OH) 4 exhibits excellent degradation performance against chemical warfare agents (CWAs). However, conventional fiber-based composite systems suffer from low loading capacities and inadequate specific surface areas, which limits their application in flexible protective gear. To address this, this study proposes an in situ transformation strategy on ZrO 2 fibers to construct ultra-high surface area Zr(OH) 4 nanofibers. Through the ligand exchange and removal of Zr-MOF precursors under mild conditions, hydroxyl-rich porous Zr(OH) 4 nanoparticles are successfully prepared. The resulting material achieves a remarkably high specific surface area of 819 m 2 g −1 , breaking the surface area bottleneck of traditional precipitation methods. Furthermore, by utilizing ZrO 2 fibers as the substrate, flexible and free-standing Zr(OH) 4 nanofibers (ZHNF) are successfully fabricated via in situ growth, retaining a high specific surface area of 418 m 2 g −1 . This work systematically investigates the heterogeneous nucleation conditions of Zr-MOFs anchored on the fiber surface, alongside the ligand exchange-driven formation mechanism of microporous Zr(OH) 4 , which achieves strong interfacial bonding between the Zr(OH) 4 and the fiber substrate. Owing to the abundant surface hydroxyls and a high specific surface area, ZHNF shortens the degradation half-life against the CWA simulant CEES to approximately 25 min, while exhibiting outstanding stability. Ultimately, this work not only provides a viable approach for integrating Zr(OH) 4 into flexible protective equipment, but also offers valuable guidance for the design of novel Zr-based porous catalytic materials.

Traditional zirconia (ZrO 2 ) fibers suffer from severe limitations in mechanical performance under extreme conditions due to high-temperature phase transformation-induced cracking, abnormal grain growth, and inherent brittleness, making it difficult to meet the stringent requirements of fields such as aerospace and energy systems. This work proposes an innovative fabrication strategy that successfully achieves in-situ growth of an amorphous carbon coating layer on the surface of Al/Y co-doped ZrO 2 nanofibers through electrospinning and hot-stretching processes. In this work, zirconium acetate acts as both zirconium source and solvent, simplifying precursor preparation. The hot-stretching process utilizes the micropores on the fiber surface to form an in-situ amorphous carbon layer, which significantly enhances the mechanical properties of the fibers: tensile strength reaches 8.08 MPa, and the fiber membrane maintains structural integrity after 500 bending cycles at 80% strain, demonstrating excellent fatigue resistance and elastic recovery capability; it also exhibits outstanding thermal shock resistance at extremely low (-196°C) and ultra-high (1350°C) temperatures. Through the key innovation of introducing an amorphous carbon layer via hot-stretching, this work successfully integrates high strength, superior flexibility, and outstanding fatigue resistance into ZrO 2 fibers. Furthermore, owing to its high porosity (92%), the fiber membrane exhibits ultra-low thermal conductivity and effective sound absorption. Ultimately, this provides a reliable solution for multifunctional ceramic fiber materials applied in high-temperature environments (up to 800°C).

Zirconia nanofibers frequently suffer from undesirable phase transformations and abnormal grain growth at elevated temperatures, significantly limiting their high-temperature applications. To overcome these challenges, we developed an innovative biphasic precursor system that combines zirconium acetate and zirconium oxychloride as co-precursors. By precisely optimizing the molar ratio of these precursors, we successfully fabricated high-quality yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nanofibers through a combination of electrospinning and sol-gel processing. Extensive characterization (FTIR, STA/TG-MS, XRD, SEM, and TEM) revealed that the optimal precursor ratio of 8:2 (zirconium acetate: zirconium oxychloride) effectively suppresses grain growth while maintaining smooth, defect-free fiber surfaces with uniform diameter distribution. The resulting nanofibers calcined at 700 °C exhibited outstanding mechanical properties, including superior tensile strength (0.25 ± 0.02 MPa) and minimal bending stiffness (23 ± 2 mN). At 1000 °C, these nanofibers maintain structural integrity with improved strength retention (0.18 ± 0.01 MPa) and controlled grain growth, while preserving cubic phase stability. The biphasic precursor strategy enables precise control over crystallization kinetics and effectively suppresses detrimental phase transformations. This study not only addresses the critical issue of thermal instability in zirconia nanofibers but also provides new insights into precursor selection for the design of high-performance ceramic nanofibers.

Nickel-rich cobalt-free cathode materials have received widespread attention due to their advantages of high energy density, low-cost, and environmental friendliness. However, the instability of the structure and surface interface accelerates the capacity degradation of these materials during cycling. Here, we synthesized LiNi 0.9 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NM91) nickel-rich cobalt-free cathode material by sol–gel method and optimized it by Zr doping to enhance the electrochemical performance. Comprehensive structural characterization confirmed that Zr doping effectively suppressed the volume change and microcrack formation during the H2–H3 phase transition, reduced the side reactions occurring on the surface, and generated a thinner and more stable CEI layer, which effectively prevented the erosion of the electrolyte. As a result, Zr–NM exhibits superior cycling stability and rate performance. Notably, 0.75%Zr–NM shows excellent capacity retention of 92.36% at 1 C and achieves a discharge specific capacity of 138 mAh·g −1 even at a high current density of 10 C.

The increasing demand for freshwater resources has positioned desalination technologies as essential for sustainable water management. Hence, exploring the applications of membrane distillation (MD) to reduce heat loss and enhance process efficiency becomes crucial in meeting the growing water needs. Zirconia ceramic, with its highly porous structure, high-temperature resistance, and superior heat-insulating properties, plays a significant contribution in the development of low thermal conductivity membranes. This study introduces the fabrication of a low thermal conductivity membrane by integrating flexible zirconia ceramic nanofibers through electrospinning and subsequent calcination. The ceramic composite membrane exhibited a reduced thermal conductivity of 0.044 W m −1 K −1 in contrast to polymer membranes, which is essential for mitigating conductive heat transfer within the membrane. Evaluation of the desalination performance of the ceramic composite membranes revealed a permeate flux of 32.1 LMH for the optimized membrane (f-CPM2) operating with a saline feed solution at 60 °C. Furthermore, investigations of the membrane’s heat-insulating properties were enhanced by temperature measurements taken during MD operation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The temperature reduction at the f-CPM2 membrane surface near the outlet demonstrated a slight reduction of only 2.8 %, whereas the polymer membrane exhibited a substantial reduction of 14.7 % relative to the bulk inlet stream temperature. The CFD analysis provided insights into temperature and velocity distribution, enhancing our understanding of thermal efficiency and fluid dynamics within the MD process.

Graphical This work highlights a novel approach to fabricate porous functional monolithic aerogels from spent lead paste anode materials by a simple sol-gel method. The resulting product is monolithic has excellent thermal insulation and electromagnetic interference shielding properties and could potentially be used in the outer shells or insulating tiles of satellites and spacecraft. The safe disposal of lead-acid batteries has emerged as a critical environmental challenge of global concern. The development of innovative treatment technologies is crucial for addressing the imminent surge in spent lead-acid battery waste. This work presents an innovative strategy for fabricating porous functional monolithic aerogels (PFMA) derived from spent lead paste anode materials. PFMA was synthesized via a facile sol-gel method by reacting spent lead paste anode material with AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O and C 8 H 12 O 8 Zr at a mild temperature (98 °C). Aluminum dihydrogen phosphate (AHP) was employed as an inorganic binder to enhance high-temperature stability in the composite system. The as-prepared PFMA exhibits a monolithic structure with excellent thermal insulation and good electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties. The as-synthesized PFMA exhibits a low thermal conductivity of 0.16 W/(m·k), demonstrating comparable thermal insulation performance to conventional refractory ceramic composites (Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 and Al 2 O 3 -Cr 2 O 3 ). When subjected to butane flame exposure (∼1300 °C) for 3 min, the 16 mm thick PFMA sample exhibited only a modest front surface temperature increase to 140 °C, demonstrating exceptional thermal insulation. Moreover, PFMA exhibits good EMI shielding performance in the range of 12–18 GHz, which corresponds to satellite and radar bands suggesting a promising potential application in this field.
