A Novel Modified ZIF-8 Nanoparticle with Enhanced Interfacial Compatibility and Pervaporation Performance in a Mixed Matrix Membrane for De-Alcoholization in Low-Concentration Solutions

Yun Xiong,Yifan Shu,Niyan Deng,Xiaogang Luo,Shengpeng Liu,Xiaoyu Wu

This study investigated the enhancement in bioethanol recovery from mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) by functionalizing zeolite framework-8 (ZIF-8) with imidazolate. This study focused on the separation of ethanol from low-concentration ethanol/water mixtures (typical post-fermentation concentrations of 5–10 wt%). Specifically, ZIF-8 was modified by the shell–ligand exchange reaction (SLER) with 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMBIM), resulting in ZIF-8-DMBIM particles with improved hydrophobicity, organophilicity, larger size, and adjustable pore size. These particles were incorporated into a PEBAX 2533 matrix to produce ZIF-8-DMBIM/PEBAX MMMs using a dilution blending method. The resulting membranes showed significant performance enhancement: 8 wt% ZIF-8-DMBIM loading achieved a total flux of 308 g/m2·h and a separation factor of 16.03, which was a 36.8% increase in flux and 176.4% increase in separation factor compared with the original PEBAX membrane. In addition, performance remained stable during a 130 h cycling test. These improvements are attributed to the enhanced compatibility and dispersion of ZIF-8-DMBIM in the PEBAX matrix. In conclusion, the evaluation of nanofiller content, feed concentration, operating temperature, and membrane stability confirmed that ZIF-8-DMBIM/PEBAX MMM is ideal for ethanol recovery in primary bioethanol concentration processes.

Enhanced ethanol recovery of PDMS mixed matrix membranes with hydrophobically modified ZIF-90

Sheng Xu,Hao Zhang,Fen Yu,Xiaoxu Zhao,Yan Wang

In this study, dodecylamine-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 (DLA-ZIF-90) particles with enhanced surface hydrophobicity are synthesized and incorporated into the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to fabricate novel PDMS/DLA-ZIF-90 mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for ethanol recovery via pervaporation. The successful modification of ZIF-90 particles is investigated via various characterization techniques. The morphology and physicochemical properties of the PDMS/DLA-ZIF-90 MMMs are studied and characterized. Compared to the PDMS MMM with unmodified ZIF-90, PDMS/DLA-ZIF-90 MMM exhibits enhanced morphology homogeneity and separation performance, contributed by the flexible inner channels of ZIF-90-DLA particles with enhanced adsorption selectivity, as well as the improved affinity between ZIF-90-DLA particles and PDMS matrix. The MMM with 2.5 wt% DLA-ZIF-90 loading shows the best performance with the optimal flux of 99.5 g m −2  h −1 and corresponding separation factor of 15.1 at 60 °C. The effect of operation temperature is also studied. The performance benchmarking shows that PDMS/DLA-ZIF-90 MMM exhibits superior pervaporation performance to most other PDMS-based membranes, and may therefore shed valuable insights to the development of high-performance ZIF-based MMMs for organic recovery.

Hydrophobic DD3R modified by perfluorooctyl-trimethoxysilane incorporates into PEBAX membrane for ethanol recovery via pervaporation

Chengyun Gao,Yuxuan Zhang,Junling Lin,Weijie Sun,Yangyang Wang,Fanhui Meng,Jiayou Liao,Xianjie Meng

A novel class of mixed-matrix membranes was synthesized through strategic integration of Polyether-block-amide (PEBAX) with Deca-dodecasil 3R (DD3R) zeolitic fillers, targeting efficiency-driven ethanol recovery in pervaporation separation systems. The DD3R molecular sieve was synthesized using adamantylamine (ADA) as a structure-directing agent and Sigma-1 seed crystals in a pure silicon precursor system. To improve compatibility with the polymer matrix, the DD3R particles were surface-modified with a silane coupling agent. Comprehensive characterization through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectra (XPS), Water Contact Angle (WCA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), swelling degree tests, and mechanical properties confirmed the successful bonding of the silane coupling agent to both DD3R and PEBAX. The optimized membrane containing 0.75 wt.% DD3R achieved a flux of 1152.06 g/m 2 h and a separation factor of 4.52 at 60 o C with a 5 wt.% ethanol feed concentration, representing a 115 % enhancement in flux and a 68 % increase in separation factor compared to the pristine PEBAX membrane. Additionally, the PEBAX/DD3R membrane displayed excellent long-term stability. This work provided a foundation for developing membranes with DD3R incorporated therein for a wide range of liquid or gas mixture separation processes.

Long alkyl chain-containing organosilica/silicalite-1 composite membranes for alcohol recovery

Xiuxiu Ren,Huan Yu,Meng Guo,Rong Xu,Jing Zhong

A long alkyl chain-containing organosilica layer obtained from 1, 8-bis(triethoxysilyl)octane (BTESO) was used to modify silicalite-1 membranes via a sol−gel method to obtain bi-layered BTESO/silicalite-1 composite membranes on macroporous α-Al 2 O 3 supports for the recovery of diluted ethanol by pervaporation . Silicalite-1 zeolite membranes were hydrothermally synthesized using two seeding methods: those prepared using wet−rubbing seeding method exhibited larger separation factors than those obtained using the dip−coating method in the pervaporation of ethanol/water due to the thinner seed layer in the former. After modified with BTESO, the surface became smoother and denser with higher hydrophobicity , and the thickness of BTESO layer was approximately 300 nm on both types of membranes. In pervaporation, two types of silicalite-1 membranes unexpectedly showed similar performances after BTESO modification. Ethanol flux increased or was maintained while water flux decreased greatly for silicalite-1 membranes after BTESO coating with increasing sol concentrations, and a higher separation factor was attained without sacrificing ethanol flux. The long alkyl chains in BTESO and silanols reacted with hydroxyl groups in silicalite-1 provided flexibility and hydrophobicity for ethanol transport with minor resistance. The optimized 2.0% BTESO/silicalite-1 membranes synthesized using wet−rubbing method showed a maximum flux of 6.84 kg m −2  h −1 and separation factor of 24.6 with overall pervaporation separation index of 161 in the pervaporation of 5.0 wt% ethanol/water mixture at 60 °C.

Solar evaporation enabled household ethanol distillation and disinfection system for remote area

Yijuan Wang,Ying Liao,Xiaojing Hou,Mingyang Shu,Liang Qian,Hao Li

Ethanol concentrations of 70 %–90 % are commonly used to prevent healthcare-associated infections due to their effectiveness against various pathogens. However, high costs and transportation challenges limit the availability of commercial ethanol disinfectants, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Local recycling of waste ethanol could address these issues, but large-scale implementation is hindered by the need for specialized equipment. Here, a small-scale, solar-powered ethanol recycling and disinfection device designed for household use was developed. Recycled melamine sponges, coated with polydopamine, serve as solar evaporators. The system achieves high evaporation rates (1.52–7.54 kg m −2 h −1 ) for ethanol solutions ranging from 0 % to 100 %. Through multiple distillations, dilute ethanol can be concentrated to the required levels for medical disinfection. A closed-loop system recycles waste ethanol, and outdoor tests demonstrate its effectiveness in eliminating Escherichia coli and Candida albicans using solar-generated ethanol vapor. This work offers a sustainable solution for small-scale ethanol distillation and disinfection in remote areas.

Seeding-free synthesis of high-performance MFI zeolite membranes on superhydrophobic supports inspired by “like grows like” principle

Xixi Ma,Xiaocao Wu,Jürgen Caro,Aisheng Huang

A seeding-free synthesis strategy was developed for the preparation of dense and phase-pure MFI zeolite membranes based on “like grows like” principle. Through covalent modification of the porous ceramic supports by using 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluoroalkyltriethoxysilanes (POTS), the support surface was changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, which promotes the nucleation and growth of hydrophobic MFI zeolite membranes. Thin, well-intergrown and phase-pure MFI zeolite membranes, with a thickness of about 2.0–3.0 μm, can be facilely prepared on POTS-modified supports like Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 at 175 °C for 24 h. No cracks, pinholes or other visible macroscopic defects are observed in the membrane layer. The MFI zeolite membranes were evaluated in the hydrophobic separation of 5.0 wt% ethanol/water mixture at 75 °C by pervaporation . The MFI zeolite membrane prepared on the POTS-modified TiO 2 disk shows high pervaporation separation for ethanol recovery. At 75 °C, a separation factor of 103 and total flux of 2.56 kg/m 2 h can be obtained, which is promising to extract bio-alcohols from the fermentation broth.

Fabrication and characterization of superhydrophobic PDMS composite membranes for efficient ethanol recovery via pervaporation

Xinping He,Tao Wang,Jinghui Huang,Jinxun Chen,Jiding Li

Bio-ethanol, clean and renewable, has proved to be a promising alternative energy resource to replace conventional fossil fuels. In its continuous production via the fermentation–pervaporation process, hydrophobic polymer membranes such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) have been developed to enrich ethanol from dilute fermentation broth. However, the efficiency of current ethanol recovery via pervaporation is not high enough for large-scale bioethanol production. To address this issue, we separately fabricated two types of lotus-inspired PDMS composite membranes to combine the beneficial properties (low surface energy and super-hydrophobicity) of superhydrophobic lotus leaves with the pervaporation process and optimized the separation performance. First, we prepared lotus leaf powder/PDMS mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) to exploit the intrinsic properties of lotus leaf’s material. In addition, polydivinylbenzene (PDVB)-coated PDMS composite membranes were fabricated to mimic and make use of the properties coming from the lotus leaf’s hierarchical structure. The morphology, surface chemistry, and pervaporation performance were systematically investigated for all the membranes. And results showed that MMMs at 1.5 wt% lotus powder loading displayed the ideal dispersion condition and increased the total flux of pervaporation process by 22% (750 g∙m −2 ∙h −1 , 6 wt%, 37 °C). For the PDVB-coated PDMS membrane, the hierarchical roughness was successfully established on the PDMS surface, which resulted in a super-hydrophobic surface with water contact angle higher than 150°. As PDVB also has preferential adsorption for ethanol, the PDVB-coated PDMS membrane showed a higher ethanol recovery performance with the separation factor and total flux increased by 13% and 30%, respectively. Therefore, it was demonstrated that PDVB coating is an effective method to fabricate superhydrophobic membranes and both the two lotus-inspired strategies are feasible in optimizing pervaporation performance for ethanol recovery.

ZIF-8@GO composites incorporated polydimethylsiloxane membrane with prominent separation performance for ethanol recovery

Tengyang Zhu,Sheng Xu,Fen Yu,Xi Yu,Yan Wang

In this study, ZIF-8@GO composites with continuous inner channels for ethanol molecules were prepared by the in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets , and filled into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to fabricate PDMS/ZIF-8@GO mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for ethanol recovery via pervaporation . The as-prepared ZIF-8@GO composites and PDMS/ZIF-8@GO MMMs were characterized by various techniques. The results showed that ZIF-8 nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on the surface of GO nanosheets and the hydrophobicity of ZIF-8@GO composites was stronger than GO due to the surface modification of GO by hydrophobic ZIF-8. Moreover, ZIF-8@GO composites as the filler not only exhibited the excellent compatibility with PDMS but also showed the good dispersion in PDMS matrix as compared to ZIF-8 nanoparticles. Therefore, ZIF-8@GO-based MMMs showed better separation performance than ZIF-8-based MMMs. The pervaporation performance of PDMS/ZIF-8@GO MMMs was studied by adjusting the filler type, particle loading, membrane thickness, and feed temperature. The optimized PDMS/ZIF-8@GO MMMs displayed a prominent separation factor of 22.2 with a total flux of 443.8 g/m 2 h with 5 wt% ethanol aqueous solution at 40 °C, and therefore the superior pervaporation performance to most other PDMS-based MMMs. The excellent pervaporation results were attributed to the synergistic effect of GO nanosheet as a strong barrier and hydrophobic ZIF-8 nanoparticles with the continuous inner channels. The synergistic effect of hybrid particles may provide valuable guidance to the development of high-performance PDMS-based MMMs for pervaporation recovery of various organic compounds.

Nanostructured polyelectrolyte-surfactant complex pervaporation membranes for ethanol recovery: the relationship between the membrane structure and separation performance

Zheng Pei-Yao,Zhang Ping,Sun Zhi-Wei,Zhu Chen-Hui,An Quan-Fu

Polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes (PESCs) were fabricated through the interaction of poly(acrylic acid) and four different cationic surfactants or their mixtures. PESC membranes were prepared by solution casting method and were applied in ethanol recovery from aqueous solution via pervaporation. Elemental analysis (EA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), water contact angle (CA) measurement, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray scattering were employed to characterize the composition, structure and properties of PESCs. The results reveal that the investigated PESCs are similar in hydrophobicity but different in hierarchical nanostructures. In separating 5 wt% ethanol/water mixture, PESC membranes with high crystallinity will have both low flux and ethanol selectivity because of the high packing density and low permeability of crystalline regions. Meanwhile, the hierarchical nanostructures of PESC membranes change under pervaporation environment as was revealed by in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray scattering measurement. That is, the crystalline region could melt at high temperature in swelling state, thus consequently enhancing the ethanol selectivity.

Preparation and pervaporation characteristics of novel ethanol permselective polyelectrolyte–surfactant complex membranes

Ping Zhang,Pei-Yao Zheng,Feng-Yang Zhao,Quan-Fu An,Cong-Jie Gao

Recovery of ethanol from a low concentration aqueous solution is a critical step for biofuel production. Pervaporation as an energy-efficient separation technology is attracting great attention in ethanol retrieving. Here we introduce polyelectrolyte–surfactant complexes (PESCs) as membrane materials for ethanol recovery from aqueous solution. PESCs with a controlled degree of complexation (DC) were prepared by mixing polyacrylic acid sodium (PAANa) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at different pH values. Both the PESCs and their membranes (PESCMs) were characterized. Pervaporation data show that PESCMs could selectively transport ethanol molecules in the feed, and the PESCM with the highest hydrophobicity gives the optimum performance in terms of selectivity. For example, the most hydrophobic PESCM (DC 0.79) features the optimum separation factor of 5.38 coupled with a high flux of 4.23 kg m−2 h−1 in processing a 5 wt% ethanol–water feed mixture at 30 °C. The PESCM, which is low cost in terms of starting materials and manufacture engineering, represents an alternative membrane system with considerable potential for biofuel production.

Comprehensive analysis on anomalous phenomenon of ethanol-soluble poly(vinyl butyral) membrane for ethanol recovery via pervaporation

Junjun Li,Mi Huang,Ping Wei,Yaqin Zhang,Xuean Zhao,Chunbo Liu,Zhijun Zhou,Lin Zhang

Poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) is selected as a promising ethanol-permselective membrane based on the solubility parameter theory; however, it exhibits anomalous water perm-selectivity in practical pervaporation (PV) process. Comprehensive analysis based on experimental and theoretical methods were carried out to explore the inherent mechanism of the anomalous performance. Firstly, sum frequency generation vibrational spectra and contact angle were developed to quantify the surface reconstruction of membrane in air and ethanol, which indicated that hydrophilic hydroxyl tended to expose on membrane surface with ethanol thus improving the membrane affinity to water. Meanwhile, swelling behaviors proved more water would accumulate in the ethanol swollen membrane. Furthermore, theoretical analysis in terms of sorption and diffusion process, based on the UNIFAC-FV model and Fujita free-volume theory, confirmed the mechanism of anomalous phenomenon of PVB membrane. The comprehensive investigation was expected to provide insights into the basic separation mechanism of PV process.
