In this work, ultrathin WO 3 nanosheets were prepared by self-assembly approach and their phase and morphology were regulated by changing the heat treatment temperature. Then, g-C 3 N 4 modified WO 3 nanosheets sensitive material was fabricated via a facile liquid ultrasonic mixing method. The microstructure, morphology, chemical composition, oxidation state and surface area of WO 3 nanosheets and g-C 3 N 4 /WO 3 nanocomposite were comparatively studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). Sensing performances of WO 3 nanosheets and g-C 3 N 4 /WO 3 composite with different g-C 3 N 4 loading amount were investigated with acetone as a target gas. Compared to WO 3 nanosheets, the g-C 3 N 4 /WO 3 gas sensor exhibits good response, excellent selectivity, transient response and trace detection ability to acetone vapor. Effects of g-C 3 N 4 content on gas sensitivity were also investigated. The response (R a /R g ) of the gas sensor based on 1 wt% g-C 3 N 4 /WO 3 was 35 toward 100 ppm acetone at 340 °C, which was about 300% higher than the response value of pure WO 3 sensor. The sensor also showed a fast response/recovery speed (9 s/3.8 s) and a wide linear detection range (from 0.5 ppm to 500 ppm). These unique sensing properties were attributed to the synergistic effects including the contribution of WO 3 ultrathin nanosheets, suitable crystal phase and porous surface, and the sensitization of g-C 3 N 4 , which increases the specific surface area and regulates the electrical properties. This work will contribute to the development of new acetone sensors and expand the application of g-C 3 N 4 composite materials.

The preparation process and gas sensitivity test of three-dimensional sphere spinel ferrites with well-assembled macroporous structures have been reported in this paper. The three-dimensional ZnFe 2 O 4 macroporous spheres (3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs) were prepared by one-step ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP), in which self-assembly sulfonated polystyrene (S-PS) spheres were employed as sacrificial template. The as-prepared samples possessed interconnected macroporous with pore diameters about 200 nm can be observed in TEM characterization, which provided more reactive active sites. The catalyst Pd was doped in 3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs with the attempt of enhancing gas-sensing performance, which has been confirmed existed as Pd 2+ formation by XRD and XPS analysis. In a comparison with pure 3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs, the 0.5% PdO-dopded 3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs exhibited a 2 times higher response (18.9) to 100 ppm acetone at 275 °C. Furthermore, the PdO- dopded 3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs-based sensor also presented excellent selectivity and good long-term stability towards acetone. The outstanding sensing performance can be attributed to the 3D spheres with interconnect macroporous structure, electronic sensitization and catalytic effects of PdO. The relative sensing mechanism has been discussed in detail.

Metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) with different nanostructures have been widely used as gas sensing materials due to the tunable interface structures and properties. However, further improvement of the sensing sensitivity and selectivity is still challenging in this area. Constructing appropriate heterogeneous interface structures and oxygen vacancies is one of the important strategies to tune the sensing properties of MOS. In the present study, interfacial heterostructures in PdxW18O49 nanowires (PdxW18O49 NWs) were fabricated and manipulated by doping different Pd contents through a simple hydrothermal process. Relevant characterization proved that the structure and composition of the one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterial can be effectively changed by Pd doping. It was found that the oxygen vacancy concentration increases first with the increase of Pd content, and when the Pd content increases to 7.18% (Pd7.18%W18O49 NWs), the oxygen vacancy content reaches the maximum (52.5%). If the Pd content continues to increase, the oxygen vacancy ratio decreases. The gas sensing investigations illustrated that the PdxW18O49 NWs exhibited enhanced sensing properties than pure W18O49 NWs toward acetone. Among the as-prepared catalysts, the Pd7.18%W18O49 NWs showed the best sensing response and the fastest response-recovery speeds (5 and 10 s, respectively) at a working temperature of 175 °C. In addition, this 1D nanostructure with fabricated heterostructures also delivers a good sensing selectivity and a wide detection range from 100 ppb to 300 ppm, with maintaining excellent performance in the presence of high concentrations of ethanol and carbon dioxide. The excellent gas sensing behavior could be attributed to the generated oxygen vacancies and the heterostructures upon Pd doping. This study offers a novel strategy for the design of high-performance gas sensors for ppb-level acetone sensing.

Based on the neck-controlled conduction model of chemiresistive gas sensors, construction of neck-controlled conduction networks in metal oxide films is an efficient method to improve their sensitivity. In this work, we develop a facile route to prepare the neck-connected ZnO (NC-ZnO) films with controllable diameters of the necked part by the sintering of core-shell zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)@ZnO films. In order to certify the enhancement of sensitivity by construction of neck-controlled conduction networks, their gas sensing properties towards ethanol are systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that the sensitivity of the optimal NC-ZnO film is dramatically improved, and the response value is about 6-times higher than that of ZnO film, reaching up to 124 ( I g /I a ) towards 50 ppm of ethanol. The results meet our expectation and are in conformity with the neck-controlled conduction model, which further indicates the developed approach in this work is expected to open up a new strategy for the preparation of neck-connected metal oxide films.

An optimized acetone gas sensor based on Ti 3 C 2 / α -Fe 2 O 3 (TF) composite materials was synthesized using microwave and etching methods. The structures, morphology and composition of the TF composites were characterized via XRD, XPS, SEM and TEM. The crystal of α -Fe 2 O 3 porous nanorods is hexagonal, and the α -Fe 2 O 3 nanoclusters formed from α -Fe 2 O 3 nanorods were adhered adequately on the lamellar Ti 3 C 2 MXene in the TF composite. The specific surface area and surface defects of the TF composites increased compared with pure α -Fe 2 O 3 nanocluster material, thus exposing a large number of gas adsorption sites. Furthermore, the excellent electrical conductivity and high free charges transfer ability of Ti 3 C 2 MXene provided more electrons for the gas-sensitive reaction and enhanced the transmission capacity of gas-sensitive reaction electrical signal, respectively. The Schottky barriers were formed at the interface of α -Fe 2 O 3 and Ti 3 C 2 MXene increasing the resistance of TF gas sensor in air, which is beneficial to the response of TF gas sensor. So, the gas-sensitive performance of TF gas sensor to acetone was greatly improved. The response of TF gas sensor to 100 ppm acetone was up to 23.38, which was nearly 2.3 times higher than pure α -Fe 2 O 3 gas sensor. The lower detection limit of TF gas sensor could be as low as 1 ppm. In addition, the TF gas sensor had excellent selectivity, long-term repeatability and stability for acetone.

Prolonged exposure to ethanol gas in the air can have deleterious effects on the human respiratory system and even pose an explosion risk. Therefore, it is imperative to monitor the concentration of ethanol gas and reliably detect its presence. In this study, tungsten-doped indium oxide (W-In 2 O 3 ) nanocomposites were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and utilized in gas sensors. The microstructures and morphologies of the nanocomposites were examined using various analytical methods, and the results indicated that W-In 2 O 3 was successfully synthesized. For instance, at optimal temperatures (280 °C) the gas-sensitive characteristics of W-In 2 O 3 composites were examined in response to varying ethanol gas concentrations (1−100 ppm). In particular, the sensor with a doping concentration of 10 % provided the best performance, as compared to the pure In 2 O 3 sensor, and displayed the highest response to 100 ppm of ethanol (33.2). Furthermore, this response is approximately 1.5–2 times better than that of pure In 2 O 3 , and simultaneously, in a cyclic test, the sensors consisting of W-In 2 O 3 exhibited excellent selectivity, fast response, short recovery times (10 and 60 s, respectively), good repeatability, and stability. In particular, the shift in microcrystal size caused by W doping was responsible for the notable augmentation of the sensitivity to ethanol, suggesting that the sensor may have potential applications for the detection and monitoring of ethanol gas.

This paper demonstrated a hybrid composite of tin oxide–reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for ppm-level detection of ethanol vapour. A facile and low-cost method of hydrothermal synthesis was used to construct the SnO2–rGO hybrid film on a PCB substrate with coil-like interdigital microelectrodes. The presence of small-sized SnO2 nanocrystals on rGO sheets was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) measurements. The sensing properties of the SnO2–rGO hybrid film sensor, including the sensitivity, response–recovery times and repeatability, were investigated by exposing it to various concentrations of ethanol gas varying from 1 ppm to 100 ppm at room temperature. As a result, the presented sensor exhibited a low detection limit of 1 ppm at room temperature, as well as a fast response–recovery time and good repeatability, which outstripped that of pure rGO film sensors. Finally, the possible mechanism of ethanol gas-sensing for the above presented sensor was discussed in detail.

The development of acetone gas sensors is desirable but challenging for both air quality monitoring and medical diagnosis. Herein, starting from bimetallic In/Ga metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) (MIL-68 (In/Ga)), a facile strategy is proposed to couple with zinc ions to design In/Ga oxide (IGO)@ZnO core–shell nanotubes for efficient acetone detection. In such a heterostructure, tiny ZnO nanoparticles are closely decorated on IGO nanotubes, which is beneficial to enlarge the specific surface area and create rich oxygen vacancies and heterojunction interfaces. Benefiting from the structural merits and synergetic effects, the IGO@ZnO-based gas sensor exhibits a low detection limitation (200 ppb), a high response, good linearity relationship between the sensing responses and wide testing acetone concentrations, and fast response and recovery time (6.8/6.1 s) with good selectivity and stability. These sensing performances strongly indicate the practical application to quantitatively detect acetone.

Pristine In 2 O 3 and ZnO–In 2 O 3 composited nanotubes were synthesized by the electrospinning technic and followed by calcination . The formation of ZnO–In 2 O 3 n–n heterojunctions was found to be highly sensitive to acetone gas. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) were respectively used to characterize surface crystallinity and morphology. The possible mechanism of nanotubes formation was also investigated. Gas sensors were made based on the as-synthesized materials to investigate their gas sensing properties. Compare with the pristine In 2 O 3 nanotubes, ZnO–In 2 O 3 composite nanotubes show the obviously improved of acetone sensitivity. The sensitivity of ZnO–In 2 O 3 composite nanotubes is about 43.2, which is about triple times larger than that of the pristine In 2 O 3 nanotubes to 60 ppm acetone at 280 °C. The response and recovery times of ZnO–In 2 O 3 nanotubes to 60 ppm acetone are about 5 and 25 s. In addition, ZnO–In 2 O 3 composite nanotubes sensor also possesses a good selectivity to acetone.

In the present work, the acetone gas sensing material based on pure α-Fe 2 O 3 nanotubes, pure and Cu-doped α-Fe 2 O 3 porous nanotubes were fabricated by electrospinning and annealing processes. Different Cu dopant concentrations are introduced to investigate the dopant’s role in sensing performance. The structures and chemical compositions of the as-prepared products were examined using a series of material characterization methods including XRD, EDS, SEM and nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis. And the acetone sensing results demonstrate that the gas sensitivity of porous nanotubes is better than nanotubes. Moreover, compared with pure samples, the sensor based on 3.0 wt% Cu-doped α-Fe 2 O 3 porous nanotubes exhibits higher response (99.43/100 ppm) and excellent selectivity towards acetone at 164 °C. Meanwhile, the detection limit can extend down to ppb level (2.2/100 ppb). Additionally, the sensor also shows fast response and recovery time (5/18 s) and good repeatability to acetone. The enhancement of gas sensitivity is ascribed to not only the effective utility of hollow and porous structures, but also the high catalytic activity of the Cu additive.

Urchin-like Cu-W18O49 and flower-like Cu-WO3 structures were successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal process followed by calcination. The synthesized products were characterized using XRD, SEM, and TEM. The results revealed that the as-prepared urchin-like and flower-like samples with monoclinic structures, which were approximately 1 μm and 1-2 μm, respectively, possessed microflower architecture assembled by the nanosheet. In addition, the gas sensing properties of monoclinic-structured Cu-WO3 to acetone were measured using a static state gas sensing test system. The sensor based on the flower-like Cu-WO3 nanostructures, which were calcined at 600°C, exhibited high sensitivity toward 10 ppm acetone at an optimum temperature of 110°C, and the maximum sensitivity reached 40, which was approximately four times higher than that of urchin-like WO3 that was annealed at 300°C. The sensitivity was improved by increasing the acetone concentration. The detection limit was as low as 1 ppm. Using linear fit, the sensor was determined to be sufficiently sensitive to detect acetone in a detection range of 1 to 10 ppm even in the presence of interfering gases, which suggests that this type of sensor has excellent selectivity and has the potential for use in acetone gas sensors in the future.

In this paper, Vanadium doped CeO 2 microsphere were synthesized using a facile hydrothermal method, and three distinct molar ratios of Ce:V precursors (15:1, 11:1 and 7:1) were investigated. The as-prepared materials were then utilized for the sensitive detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), specifically acetone. Results show that the V doping leads to a significant improvement in acetone response compared to the pure CeO 2 sensor. Notably, the V-doped CeO 2 sensing material with the optimal ratio of 11:1 has the highest response value of ∼12 for 100 ppm acetone at a low working temperature of 230 °C. Additionally, this sensor exhibits fast response time (15 s) and recovery time (10 s). Moreover, the V-doped CeO 2 (11:1) sensor exhibits a broad concentration range of 0.5–500 ppm for acetone detection. This material also demonstrates great cycle stability, maintaining high stability over a 60-day testing period (RSD = 0.91 %). The as-prepared V-doped CeO 2 sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity, response and recovery time, and cycle stability, making it a promising candidate for practical applications in acetone sensing.
