Formation, Stability and Properties of Hemp Seed Oil Emulsions for Application in the Cosmetics Industry

Liujun Pei,Yuni Luo,Xiaomin Gu,Jiping Wang

Hemp seed oil has good sun protection, repair, anti-allergy and anti-aging effects, and is a high quality raw material for the production of skincare products. However, the influence of surfactants and co-surfactants on the emulsification of hemp seed oil in aqueous solution has been rarely investigated. In this investigation, the surfactants and co-surfactants which were suitable for hemp seed oil emulsion were optimized, and the factors which influence the particle size and the stability of the emulsion were studied. Moreover, the application of hemp seed emulsion in different cosmetics was also further investigated. It was found that sorbitan monooleate/polysorbate-80 and glyceryl stearate were the most effective surfactant and co-surfactant in the emulsification of hemp seed oil. After three months the hemp seed oil emulsion had no layered separation and remained homogeneous at -48C, 258C and 408C. The water-resistant sunscreens and the hemp seed oil sunscreens were homogeneous pastes, had a soft texture and were stable at higher temperatures. No microorganisms were detected in these cosmetic creams. Therefore, hemp seed oil is suitable for sunscreen cosmetic materials.

Oppositely Sensitive pH-Responsive Surfactants Derived from Polymer-Grafted Carbon Dots

Tianhao Zhang,Junjie Fan,Wenxiu Qiu,Xinyu Yuan,Jianwen Hu,Haotian Gao,Wenqing Xie,Chunling Li,Shuangqing Sun,Songqing Hu

This study reports the development of two pH-responsive Pickering emulsifiers utilizing carbon dots (CDs) as the core component. Both emulsifiers were fabricated via a post-synthetic method, involving the grafting of poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA) onto the surface of CDs to create CD-based emulsifier. Notably, despite employing an identical synthetic route, the two CD-based emulsifiers exhibit markedly distinct pH-responsive behaviors. The findings demonstrate that both CD-based emulsifiers effectively stabilize Pickering emulsions, and their emulsification and demulsification behaviors can be precisely controlled by adjusting the pH, displaying excellent reproducibility in their pH-responsive performance. To elucidate the underlying reason for this differing pH-responsiveness, the concept of hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) was introduced. The analysis of the HLB values of the two CD-based emulsifiers revealed that their hydrophilic-lipophilic properties exhibit opposite trends under differing pH conditions, contributing to their contrasting pH-responsive behaviors. This study not only lays a fundamental basis foundation and offers guidance for further research and applications of CD-based smart-responsive emulsifiers but also presents novel insights into design and development of more intelligent and functional emulsifying agents. Moreover, owing to the enhanced fluorescence characteristics of CDs, these pH-responsive emulsifiers hold significant potential for interdisciplinary applications, such as oil and gas exploration and fluorescent labelling.

Aqueous anionic polyurethane dispersions from castor oil

Haiyan Liang,Shanwen Wang,Heng He,Mengqi Wang,Lingxiao Liu,Jingyi Lu,Yi Zhang,Chaoqun Zhang

In this study, dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) and dimethylol butanoic acid (DMBA) were employed to synthesize the castor oil-based waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUDs). The effects of these two emulsifier and their contents on the properties of the PUDs as well as their films were investigated systematically. The results show that as the emulsifiers contents increase, the particle size and zeta potential of the PUDs decrease while the tensile strength of the resulting PU films increase but thermal stability, water and chemical resistance decrease. The PUDs from DMBA exhibit smaller particle size than those from DMPA and the films from the former show higher tensile strength, higher elongation at break but lower thermal stability, lower water resistance. This work provides a new way to synthesize environmental friendly bio-based waterborne polyurethanes whose properties can be tuned according to their application, such as coating, ink, leather, styling products and so on.

Viscosity reduction of offshore heavy oil by application of a synthesized emulsifier and its microscopic mechanism during thermal recovery

Yongtao Sun,Zhaomin Li,Yubao Sun,ShaoHua Wang

This paper reports the synthesis of AEC-9Na and its effects as an emulsifier on viscosity reduction of heavy oils. Williamson reaction was employed to obtain the emulsifier and its thermal stability was evaluated. The results showed that AEC-9Na can withstand a temperature of 300 °C, the viscosity reduction rate can reach greater than 99%, and it has high stability to calcium and magnesium salts. The interfacial tension of AEC-9Na on heavy oil reached 10−1 level. Compared with the steam flooding, the flooding efficiency with the addition of 1.0% AEC-9Na was increased by 4.8%. The samples were examined microscopically and self-emulsification occurred.

Designer bioemulsifiers based on combinations of different polysaccharides with the novel emulsifying esterase AXE from Bacillus subtilis CICC 20034

Tao Weiyi,Lin Junzhang,Wang Weidong,Huang He,Li Shuang

Background Bioemulsifiers are surface-active compounds, which exhibit advantages including low toxicity, higher biodegradability and biocompatibility over synthetic chemical surfactants. Despite their potential benefits, some obstacles impede the practical applications of bioemulsifiers, including low yields and high purification costs. Here, we aimed to exploit a novel protein bioemulsifier with efficient emulsifying activity and low-production cost, as well as proposed a design-bioemulsifier system that meets different requirements of industrial emulsification in the most economical way. Results The esterase AXE was first reported for its efficient emulsifying activity and had been studied for possible application as a protein bioemulsifier. AXE showed an excellent emulsification effect with different hydrophobic substrates, especially short-chain aliphatic and benzene derivatives, as well as excellent stability under extreme conditions such as high temperature (85 °C) and acidic conditions. AXE also exhibited good stability over a range of NaCl, MgSO 4 , and CaCl 2 concentrations from 0 to 1000 mM, and the emulsifying activity even showed a slight increase at salt concentrations over 500 mM. A design-bioemulsifier system was proposed that uses AXE in combination with a variety of polysaccharides to form efficient bioemulsifier, which enhanced the emulsifying activity and further lowered the concentration of AXE needed in the complex. Conclusions AXE showed a great application potential as a novel bioemulsifier with excellent emulsifying ability. The AXE-based-designer bioemulsifier could be obtained in the most economical way and open broad new fields for low-cost, environmentally friendly bioemulsifiers.

Phytosterols photooxidation in O/W emulsion: Influence of emulsifier composition and interfacial properties

Bo-wen Yang,Sheng-yang Ji,Tian Zhao,Zhang-tie Wang,Yan-song Zhang,Qian-nan Pan,Wei-su Huang,Bai-yi Lu

Although phytosterols (PS) showed various excellent health functions, their applications in the food industry were limited by poor water solubility and high oxidation sensitivity. This study investigated the fabrication of phytosterol-enriched emulsions stabilized by different emulsifiers and evaluated the effect of different interfacial layers on the photooxidation of phytosterols and emulsions. The emulsions were prepared with Tween 20, whey protein isolate (WPI), and soy protein isolate (SPI) to achieve interfacial membranes with different properties. The SPI-dextran mixture or dextran-glycated SPI was adopted as the additional emulsifier. Compared with Tween 20, high molecular weight emulsifiers (proteins and their mixtures) exhibited stronger photooxidation stabilities and high viscosity and density of droplet interfacial membrane. The stability of PS emulsions that undergo photooxidation was impacted by the inclusion of these emulsifiers, whereas the extent of phytosterols photooxidation was, from highest to lowest, in the following order: SPI/dextran mixture > glycated SPI mixture > WPI > SPI > Tween 20. The proper SPI concentration (1.5 wt%) showed the highest interface pressure and viscosity and the higher PS stability. Moreover, the higher rheological properties and surface pressure of droplets reveal extra oxidative stability and lower oxidation rate of PS, as well as the formation of additional 7β-OH products. This work demonstrates that emulsions may be tuned toward better photooxidation oxidative stability by modifying interface composition and interfacial properties.

A simple way to synthesize a nano-scale stable epoxy emulsion for sizing CF/epoxy composites

YiFan Chen,Lei Ding,Chao Cui,Zhengxiang Zhong,Li Liu,Yudong Huang

A simple method to prepare an emulsifier was proposed to form a stable nano size emulsion as a sizing agent to enhance the interfacial bonding strength between carbon fiber (CF) and epoxy resin. The toluene diisocyanate (TDI) grafting strategy can effectively introduce hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) and hydrophobic poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) into the side chain of the epoxy resin without consuming epoxy groups. The PPG chain segment length was controlled to improve the stability of the emulsion. An emulsion prepared with EP–PEG6000–PPG2000 (EE-P20) as the emulsifier had the highest stability, and could be placed for more than 6 months without changes in the droplet size. The wettability of CF modified by this sizing agent was obviously improved, and the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of CF(EE-P20) were increased by 42.33% and 17.41%, respectively. It was worth noting that the moisture absorption of CF(EE-P20) was 3.12% at 90% relative humidity. The introduction of the PPG segment not only improved the storage stability of the emulsion, but also improved the moisture resistance of CF after sizing. This simple continuous grafting method provides a new idea for adjusting the structure of the epoxy sizing agent, and the obtained emulsifier has a wide application prospect in the field of the CF sizing agent.

Preparation, properties and characterisation of microemulsion PCM slurry

Dengwu Wang,Jianlong Si,Sude Ma

The provisions and applications of renewable energy have great supply–demand gap problem, and thermal energy storage (TES) is a very promising solution to fully utilise the renewable energy and covers off-peak periods. The application of solid–liquid phase change material (PCM) is an effective way of TES based on the techniques of encapsulation and emulsion, but the capsules are easily broken and the emulsions are easily phase separated as they were phase changed for many times, so some other techniques should be developed. The microemulsion PCM slurry was prepared by the combination uses of emulsifiers (i.e. sorbitan monooleate 80 and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate 80), coemulsifier (i.e. butanol), distilled water, purified paraffin and inorganic salts (i.e. potassium chloride). The average particle size in the slurry was about 50 nm, and the slurry was homogeneous after centrifugal acceleration of 1800 g (i.e. ‘ g ’ is the gravity acceleration) for 5 min and phase change cycles for 1000 times. The latent heat of the slurry was 72.25 J g −1 and the paraffin content in the microemulsion was 43.8 wt %. The slurry can overcome the shortcomings of some other techniques and be expected to be widely applied in the TES.

Thermophysical Properties of Some Fatty Acids/Surfactants as Phase Change Slurries for Thermal Energy Storage

Zhaoli Zhang,Yanping Yuan,Nan Zhang,Xiaoling Cao

Capric acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, and their eutectics are chosen as phase change materials to constitute the phase change slurries for the first time. Under the emulsification of span20/SDS, phase change slurries with 30 wt % fatty acids are then fabricated by high-speed shearing. Thermophysical properties of phase change slurries are characterized by means of DSC. Results indicate that eutectic phase change slurries exhibit lower freezing/melting peak temperatures than corresponding fatty acids slurries. In the melting, peak temperatures from 22.36 °C to 55.61 °C and the freezing peak temperatures from 14.61 to 48.97 °C, latent heat fusion of eutectic phase change slurries are between 36.32 J/g and 51.82 J/g, 34.35 J/g and 48.58 J/g in the endothermic/exothermic processes. Heat fusion has not demonstrated obvious changes under the heating and melting processes, and these values are approximately equal to those of pure fatty acids multiplied by the mass fraction. Additionally, supercooling of phase change slurries are between 0.55 °C and 6.55 °C, and this phenomenon might be induced by the crystal structures formed in fatty acids eutectics.

Influence of acylglycerol emulsifier structure and composition on the function of shortening in layer cake

Yuanyuan Fu,Renyong Zhao,Lu Zhang,Yanlan Bi,Hong Zhang,Cuihong Chen

The effect of the structure and composition of acylglycerol emulsifiers on the functionality of a palm-based shortening and quality of layer cake was investigated. The emulsifiers evaluated were distilled monoacylglycerol (DMG) and four acylglycerols (40% monoacylglycerol content) of octanoic acid (8:0), palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), and linoleic acid (18:2), designated as GMOct40, GMP40, GMS40, and GML40, respectively. The addition of GMP40 and GMS40 led to shortening with a higher solid fat content, finer crystals, and higher proportion of β’ form. These changes enhanced shortening’s function in aiding air incorporation and retention in cake batter, which improved the cake’s volume and crumb structure. However, the high monoacylglycerol content in DMG did not improve the properties of shortening and cake as compared to GMP40. In contrast, GML40 and GMOct40 had adverse effects on the functionality of shortening, which generated cakes with inferior crumb structure.

Dynamic covalent carbon dot-based emulsifiers: A novel strategy for smart Pickering emulsions and enhanced heavy oil recovery in ultra-low permeability reservoirs

Junjie Fan,Jianpeng Cui,Tinglei He,Tianhao Zhang,Xinyu Yuan,Jianwen Hu,Haotian Gao,Hong Zhang,Chunling Li,Songqing Hu,Shuangqing Sun

Carbon dots (CDs), a class of fluorescent nanomaterials distinguished by their unique properties such as tunable surface chemistry and nanoscale dimensions, have garnered significant attention. In this study, we synthesize CDs-based emulsifiers through a combination of hydrothermal synthesis and hydrophobic modification utilizing dynamic covalent imine bonds, imparting them with amphiphilicity and pH-responsiveness. These carbon dot-based emulsifiers stabilize the oil–water interface to form Pickering emulsions and enable the reversible regulation of amphiphilicity through pH-induced cleavage and reformation of imine bonds, thereby facilitating transitions between emulsification and demulsification. Furthermore, the amphiphilic CDs effectively reduce oil–water interfacial tension and exhibit potential application in mobilizing heavy oil in ultra-low permeability reservoirs. Consequently, we observed a 28.78 % decrease in injection pressure and an 18.65 % increase in recovery rates. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the CDs adsorb onto both solid and oil phase surfaces, modulating the interfacial properties and enabling the oil film attached to the rock wall to be more easily stripped off during water flushing. Additionally, the small size of the CDs allowed them to enter finer pore throats and effectively displace the residual oil film. This unique characteristic holds significant promise for future advancements in the fields of smart-response Pickering emulsions and enhanced oil recovery in ultra-low permeability reservoirs.

One-Step Multiple Emulsions Driven by Interfacial Neutralization Reaction

Jingwen Luo,Mingshuo Cui,Xiaodong Lian,Bin Yuan,Chenhao Song,Yingchao Ma,Yapei Wang

The multicomponent structure and the large area of oil–water interfaces make multiple emulsions promising for use in cosmetic manufacturing, food industries, and agricultural production. However, the high energy input and extensive use of emulsifiers in the process of multiple emulsion preparation severely limit their application. In this work, we propose a simple but highly efficient emulsification strategy to realize one-step multiple emulsions. To this end, the interfacial acid–base neutralization reaction by oleic acid and ammonia is employed as the driving force to construct a spontaneous emulsifying system, thus realizing emulsion formation in a low-energy manner. Moreover, the products generated by the interfacial neutralization reaction can act as emulsifiers to stabilize both the O/W and W/O interfaces and construct multiple emulsions with an O/W/O structure. Compared to conventional methods of multiple emulsion formation, the one-step multiple emulsion method driven by an interfacial neutralization reaction can significantly reduce the energy consumption and the emulsifier dosage during the emulsifying process, thus avoiding the probable environmental problems caused by the residual emulsifiers. This study not only provides a new idea for the preparation of multiple emulsions but also effectively promotes the development of low-surfactant emulsification methods.
