Magnetic recyclable carbon nanotubes and its demulsification performance in oily wastewater

Zhiming Huang,Xiao Luo,Yuanzhu Mi,Guang Wu,Chunlin Wang,Lei Liu,Fan Ye,Yue Luo

In current study, a magnetic recyclable carbon nanotube demulsifier (CNTs/Fe3O4) was synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscope, and vibrating samples magnetometer. The demulsification efficiency in oily wastewater reached 99.6% under optimal conditions and the total organic carbon of the separated water was reduced to 32.8 mg/L. Moreover, the recyclability test indicated that CNTs/Fe3O4 could be reused four times without significant reduction in light transmittance. Furthermore, the possible demulsification mechanism was also proposed. As a promising magnetic material with interfacial activity and recyclability, CNTs/Fe3O4 demonstrated a promising application to separate crude oil from oily wastewater.

Graphene oxide at oil-water interfaces: Adsorption, assembly & demulsification

Shenwen Fang,Ting Chen,Bin Chen,Yan Xiong,Ying Zhu,Ming Duan

Graphene oxide (GO) has gathered widespread interest within the scientific community due to its unique properties. Understanding the adsorption behaviors of GO at the oil–water interface has become increasingly important both in terms of fundamental science and applications of GO in emulsions. In the present work, the adsorption dynamics of GO sheets at the toluene/water interface were explored by using pendant drop tensiometry to trace the evolution of oil/water interfacial tensions. A shift from diffusion-controlled to kinetic controlled feature was observed during the aging of the interface, indicating the irreversible adsorption of GO to the interface. Assembly of GO at oil/water interfaces in the presence of surfactants were discussed. Robust large-area films could be prepared by taking advantage of the assembly of GO at the oil/water interface in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and octane phenol polyoxyethylene-10. Corresponding interaction mechanisms were discussed. Ultimately, the acquired insights on the interfacial adsorption and the interfacial assembly behavior of GO sheets were combined to reveal the demulsification performance of GO for different emulsions. The findings in the present study are crucial for fully understanding the interfacial activity of GO in emulsions and might provide a facile way to prepare large-area graphene oxide thin films.

A one-step preparation of superhydrophobic stainless steel mesh and application in raffinate cleaning technology as a coalescer for contaminated organic-water separation

Yuchen Jiang,Xiaofei Duan,Boren Tan,Yanjuan Zhang,Lechang Xu,Yong Wang

Improving raffinate oil-water separation efficiency and simplifying the production process of coalescing material are both in great demand but remain difficult. In this study, a superhydrophobic stainless steel surface was created using a simple one-step electrodeposition process in an electrolyte solution comprising nickel chloride (NiCl 2 ·6H 2 O), stearic acid , and ethanol. The surface shape, chemical content, and superhydrophobic property were studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and contact angle measurement. The cotton-like microstructure, comprised of crystals of Ni metal and Ni(CH 3 (CH 2 ) 16 COO) 2 , demonstrated outstanding acid and alkaline resistance with a maximum surface contact angle of 166.8°. The oil-water separation performance of raffinate was tested in a mixer-settler, and the separation efficiency ranged from 75% to 80% in a P507 + Kerosene/water system, based on Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) indicating its potential applicability in the solvent extraction process. A high-speed camera was also used to observe the coalescing behavior of oil droplets in water.

Influence of aggregate chemical composition on the demulsification rate of emulsified asphalt

Tan Wei,Zhu Songxiang,Kong Lingyun,Peng Yi,Xu Lei,Fu Yaoguo

Efficient demulsification is vital for the application of emulsified asphalt in road construction. In this paper, the effects of the main chemical components of the aggregates (CaCO3, MgO, Fe2O3, SiO2, Al2O3) on the demulsification process of emulsified asphalt were studied by experiment and simulation using a Gompertz model. The findings indicate that the surface energy, specific surface area, and pH of the chemical components of the aggregates are the most important factors influencing the demulsification speed of the emulsified asphalt. The choice of the aggregate’s main chemical components can accelerate demulsification speed, with the acceleration effect of Al2O3 on anionic (SDBS) emulsified asphalt and MgO on cationic (STAC) emulsified asphalt both reaching 60%. The fit between the Gompertz model and the experimental viscosity curve is greater than 0.93, which verifies the utility of using the Gompertz approach for studying emulsified asphalt-aggregate mortar viscosity changes. A demulsification evaluation function φ(t) of emulsified asphalt is proposed based on the parameters of the Gompertz model. When φ(t) is close to 1, the emulsified asphalt-aggregate mortar is fully demulsified, and setting φ(t)=1 allows the demulsification time of the emulsified asphalt-aggregate mortar to be calculated from the Gompertz model parameters.

Sustaining fouling resistant membranes: Membrane fabrication, characterization and mechanism understanding of demulsification and fouling-resistance

Bing He,Yajie Ding,Jianqiang Wang,Zhikan Yao,Weihua Qing,Yingjie Zhang,Fu Liu,Chuyang Y. Tang

Antifouling performance of membranes is the key obstacle limiting their practical applications for oil/water separation. In this study, a sustaining antifouling membrane was fabricated by constructing polydopamine (PDA) micro-/nano-spheres on a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous membrane. The secondary PDA nano-spheres not only strengthened the bonding of primary micro-spheres with the substrate, but also diversified the hierarchical structure and chemistry. The composite showed enhanced superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. Permeability of PAN-PDAc membrane was maintained as high as 11666 ± 978 Lm −2 h −1 bar −1 with separation efficiency of higher than 99.9% over a 2-h continuous filtration. This permeability was about 2.7 times of pristine PAN membrane (4260 ± 430 Lm −2 h −1 bar −1 ). The extrusion and cutting demulsification on the confined space of PAN-PDA surface was proposed. Antifouling mechanism of the superhydrophilic membrane was first theoretically elucidated based on hydration ability and adhesion free energy with recourse to thermal analysis and Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory respectively. It was found that PDA micro-/nano-spheres mediated membrane showed strong hydration ability (higher fraction of non-freezable water) and weak adhesion towards toluene (low free energy of adhesion) compared to pristine PAN membrane. These findings would lead to a better understanding of antifouling demulsification mechanism and improved design of sustaining antifouling membranes for oil/water separation.

Preparation and demulsification performance of modified attapulgite nanoparticle demulsifier

You Mu,Jun Liu,Juan Liu,Sili Ren

By chemically modifying the attapulgite (AT) using 3-Aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES), stearic acid (STA) and/or octadecyl trichlorosilane (OTS), AT-APTES, AT-APTES-STA and AT-OTS nanoparticle demulsifiers were prepared. The structure and morphology of the prepared materials were characterized and analyzed by FT-IR, SEM and Zeta potential. Contact angle characterization and the distribution of nanoparticle materials in the oil-water mixture showed that the AT-APTES-STA nanomaterial has good amphiphilicity and interfacial activity. The demulsification performance of various NP demulsifiers was investigated by using bottle test method. The results showed that the AT-APTES-STA nanoparticles can achieve rapid and efficient demulsification of the crude oil emulsions at room temperature in a wide pH range from acidic to weak alkaline. The increase of demulsifier dosage and demulsification temperature was helpful to improve the demulsification efficieny. However, the influence of temperature on the demulsification efficiency was limited, and good demulsification efficiency could be obtained at room temperature. Under the conditions of demulsifier dosage 900 ppm, pH 7 and temperature 25℃, the demulsification efficiency of AT-APTES-STA was as high as 96.7%. In contrast, the AT-APTES had a poor demulsification efficiency, while the AT and AT-OTS materials basically do not have the demulsification ability. By comparing the demulsification performance and the chemical structure of these modified attapulgite nanoparticles, it was concluded that a NP demulsifier with excellent demulsification performance should have the following two basic characteristics: (a) good amphiphilicity and interfacial activity; and (b) enough surface functional groups that can strongly interact with the emulsified molecules. It is believed that this work is of great significance to the design and preparation of NP demulsifiers for the crude oil emulsion.

Solar demulsification: Towards the oil-water interface broken of solar photo-thermo-electro coupling

Chunhong Nie,Huan Du,Yupeng Zhang,Jiangrui Yang,Wenfei Wang,Rui Mo

The stability of the emulsified oil/water mixture depends on the strength and tightness of the interface, which is closely related to the adsorption and close packing of the active components on the interface. The core task of demulsification is to change the interface properties to enhance efficient oil-water separation. In this study, a coupling model of photo field, thermo field, and electro field was constructed to focus on fully considering the particularity of the demulsification, while improving the utilization efficiency of solar energy by presetting and matching a variety of energy flows and sub-processes. Taking oil/water emulsion from the ASP flooding as an example , the oil removal rate of 82.27% can be obtained, and efficient energy modes, namely high-intensity thermo field, uniform photo field and low-intensity electro field, are established. At the same time, the results show that the photo-thermo-electro field changes the properties of the oil-water interface, such as the interfacial tension, zeta potential and modulus. The mechanism of solar demulsification is that the solar thermal effect changes the motion state of the molecules at the interface, the coupling electro effect drives the migration of charged droplets and the stretching or deformation of the polymer chain, which combined with the photo field to degrade the polymer at the interface. Solar demulsification not only enables innovation in the form of energy and promotes its sustainable development, but also provides a green process in which solar thermo, photo, and electro are synergistically combined to achieve demulsification.

Expansion and growth of liquid bridge in saline water-in-oil emulsion under synchronized magnetic field coupled low-intensity electric field

Li Mofan,Yang Donghai,Chen Conglei,Lv Shiyi,Miao Jiaxu,He Limin

Unconventional crude oil and offshore oilfield extraction often lead to the formation of stable oil–water emulsions with high mineralization, posing significant threats to environmental protection and pipeline transportation safety. Electric–magnetic coupling separation technology represents a novel approach to emulsion breaking, offering superior separation performance compared to the conventional electric coalescence methods. However, its underlying mechanism remains elusive. To address this gap, this study comparatively investigates the liquid bridge dynamic during droplet coalescence under a single electric field and electric–magnetic coupling field conditions. High-speed camera experiments reveal that synchronized coupled magnetic fields suppress the extension of liquid bridges, with this suppression effect being augmented by increasing ion concentration and electric field strength. Nevertheless, the enhancement of the inhibition effect is not pronounced at electric field strengths up to 224 kV m −1 and within the frequency range of 50–500 Hz. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the mutual repulsion effect between water molecules and the hydration effect between water molecules and ions are intensified under the coupling field. Finally, by integrating flow field and velocity analyses, a mechanism is proposed to elucidate the hysteresis in the evolution of liquid bridges, attributed to the mutual repulsion of water molecules hydrated by deflecting ions and convecting water molecules in the coupled field. This study offers valuable insights for the development of electric–magnetic coupling separation techniques, with implications for mitigating oil contamination and facilitating dewatering treatments.

Towards efficient solar demulsification (I): A solar electrical role on interfacial film of emulsions

Chunhong Nie,Huan Du,Yupeng Zhang,Guoqiang Han,Heting Wang,Dandan Yuan,Baohui Wang,Xirui Wang

Oil/water separation has become a significant issue since emulsions are detected in many industrial wastewater and severely threaten the ecological environment. Developing separation technique driven by solar energy with high separation efficiency is quite meaningful and challenging. In this work, solar electrical role on an interfacial film of emulsions was developed for efficient oil/water separation. Emulsified oil/water droplets from the ASP flooding were chosen to characterize the influence of solar electrical role on demulsification. Droplet size distribution , zeta potential , interfacial tension, viscosity, microscope image, and rheological properties were systematically studied to explore the mechanism of electrical role on the instability of oil droplets . Experimental results indicate solar electrical role on the oil-water interface can change the properties of the interface, help the oil-water emulsion instability, and promote oil-water separation. The instability mechanism of the emulsion can be summarized as the following. Firstly, the charged oil/water droplets interfere with the original electric field, which generates a force along with the droplet's tangential direction. Secondly, the force drives charged groups to radially migrate away from the electrode, which causes the entangled polymer to loosen, expand, and rearrange interface charges, resulting in decreasing in the rigidity and zeta potential. Thirdly, the force also promotes the electrohydrodynamic flow of oil/water droplets. The adjacent oil/water droplets mutually entrained in electrohydrodynamic fluid flow, resulting in coalescence . Furthermore, the interface-active components can be electrochemically oxidized to small molecular. The in-depth research of solar electrical role on interfacial film provides theoretical support for coupling of solar photo effect and thermal effect, to obtain highly efficient solar demulsification.

The Application of Fatty Acids Emulsions in Thermal Coal Reverse Flotation

Liang Shen,Huai-fa Wang,Bing-lin Guo,Hao Wang

Reverse flotation of Pingsuo thermal coal was investigated and it turned out that a large amount of DDA-HCL (dodecylamine hydrochloride) was needed in this process. Two fatty acids (dodecanoic acid and oleic acid) of different carbon chain lengths emulsified by DDA-HCL were used to compare with DDA-HCL in the experiments. Experimental results showed that the two emulsions had stronger collectivity than DDA-HCL. Dodecanoic emulsions had higher selectivity than OA (oleic acid) emulsions. The application of dodecanoic emulsions can obtain a lower ash content of the concentrate than DDA-HCL at the same collector dosage. And it can reduce DDA-HCL consumption greatly under the same concentrate ash content. Reverse flotation results of the two emulsions were also compared. The results indicated that the selectivity of dodecanoic emulsions dropped sharply when the amount of substance ratio of DDA-HCL and dodecanoic acid was less than 1:1.

Facile fabrication of fabric-based membrane for adjustable oil-in-water emulsion separation, suspension filtration and dye removal

Keru Hou,Kaili Jin,Zhuizhui Fan,Peibo Du,Yating Ji,Jun Wang,Yaping Zhao,Chengjian Yao,Zaisheng Cai

Special wettability fabrics-based membranes have shown excellent performance in emulsified oil/water separation, however, their application in separating industrial oil-in-water emulsions still remains a great challenge due to the complexity of multifarious surfactant components. In this work, we demonstrate a simple and facile approach to fabricate fabric-based membranes (P(AM-DMC-AA)@CFs) for complex emulsified oil/water (printing and dyeing wastewater) separation with combining the advantage of amphoteric polyacrylamide layer and cotton fabric in a single system. The amphoteric polyacrylamide surface and tortuous fabric channels synergistically provide the membranes with demulsification adjustability for separating emulsified oil in water which stabilized by anionic/cationic surfactants. Meanwhile, the incorporating of amphoteric polyacrylamide into cotton fabrics had remarkable advantages of both flexible and stable superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic. Consequently, the obtained P(AM-DMC-AA)@CFs membranes are endowed with robust superhydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity and switchable zeta potential , which make it capable of highly efficient separation of oil/water emulsion (anionic: 94.05%, cationic: 96.19%), suspension filtration (kaolin: 89.5%, hematite : 93.1%,) and concurrent dye removal in 5 min (14.3 mg/g). In addition, the prepared membrane is still effective in separating simulated printing and dyeing wastewater containing multiple pollutants. The facile and versatile design of the P(AM-DMC-AA)@CFs membrane offers new prospects for exploiting fabric-based membranes with extraordinary features for industrial oily wastewater treatment .

Tailoring of structured hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-stabilized emulsions for encapsulation of nobiletin: modification of the oil and aqueous phases

Gege Sun,Lingling Lei,Huanle Chen,Bin Li,YanPing Cao,Yan Li

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)-stabilized emulsions were produced and their structure was further modified by altering the oil (glycerol monolaurate, GML) and aqueous (whey protein concentrate, WPC) phases. Then, the encapsulation and release of nobiletin were evaluated. HPMC (3%) could efficiently stabilize the oil droplets with a particle size around 370 nm. When HPMC was the emulsifier, the stabilization time of nobiletin in the emulsion was prolonged, but its encapsulation amount was still maintained around 4.5 mg g−1. Nobiletin crystals were found to adsorb on the interface of oil droplets. The addition of GML and WPC changed the microstructure of HPMC-stabilized emulsions. Both of them enhanced the encapsulation efficiency and storage stability of nobiletin. Nobiletin crystals became softer and shorter. After modification, nobiletin was stable for one week at a level of 7.5 mg g−1. The bioaccessibility of nobiletin was modulated in the presence of GML and WPC. The results demonstrate that the structure of emulsion-based delivery systems affects the encapsulation and delivery of hydrophobic components.
