Effects of Divalent Salts on the Interfacial Activity of the Mixed Surfactants at the Water/Model Oil Interface

Kaihe Lv,Kaile Jia,Yugui Han,Qiuxia Wang,Xu Leng,Hui Yan,Han Jia

In our previous report, the mixed cationic/anionic surfactant system consisting of N -dodecyl- N -methylpyrrolidinium bromide (L12) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) showed good interfacial tension (IFT) reduction of water/model oil ( V toluene : V n -decane = 1:1). In the present study, the effects of divalent salts (MgCl 2 or CaCl 2 ) on the interfacial activity were systematically evaluated. The additional Mg 2+ ions greatly reduced the IFT to an ultralow value, whereas Ca 2+ ions caused the generation of the precipitates and resulted in increased IFT values. The precipitates disappeared in binary divalent salt solutions, and the IFT values remained at a low level. Based on the valence, polarizability, and hydrated radius of the ions, we proposed a model to explain the abnormal changes. The effects of NaCl and temperature were investigated to further verify our proposed mechanism. Moreover, the additional divalent salts obviously enhanced the stability of L12/SDS stabilized emulsions.

Boric acid-loosened polyvinyl alcohol/glutaraldehyde membrane with high flux and selectivity for monovalent/divalent salt separation

Die Zou,Yuzhe Zhou,Wentao Yan,Yong Zhou,Congjie Gao

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has the advantages of excellent hydrophilicity, good film-forming properties and competitive prices, thus it is an ideal membrane material. However, rare reports about PVA membrane for monovalent/divalent salt separation, which is widespread in chemical industry can be found. Herein, we developed a novel boric acid (BA)-loosened PVA/glutaraldehyde (GA) membrane with high flux and selectivity for monovalent/divalent salt separation. Our idea is based on the fact that BA and PVA can form a complex due to some special interactions (including chemical bonding and H-bonding). In general, PVA membrane needs to crosslink with GA for obtaining a high salt rejection. However, PVA/GA membrane is usually too compact, leading to a low membrane water flux. The formation of PVA/BA complex reduced PVA/GA membrane crystallinity and increased its pore size, thereby improving the membrane flux obviously (by 16 times). PVA/GA/BA membrane flux is high: under 7.5 bar, its pure water flux was 20.20 L/m 2 ·h. Besides, a high monovalent/divalent salt selectivity (64.21) was also achieved since the rejection of monovalent salt (NaCl) declined sharply and meanwhile the high rejection of divalent salt (Na 2 SO 4 ) was maintained. Moreover, the developed PVA/GA/BA membrane exhibited a good alkali resistance, antifouling performance and stability of permselectivity, which has a bright application prospect. This work may pave a novel avenue to develop high-performance PVA monovalent/divalent salt separation membranes .

Polyamide-based nanofiltration membranes with acicular leaf-like structure for rapid and selective separation of mono-divalent salts

Bo Zhu,Tiefan Huang,Lelin Zeng,Nan Li,Zhiwei Xu,Jianxian Zeng,Hu Zhou

Conventional polyamide-based nanofiltration (NF) membranes frequently encounter significant trade-off constraints between selectivity and permeability, which impedes their widespread adoption. In this study, we present a method for the construction of membrane surfaces with regular acicular leaf-like structures via interfacial polymerization reactions. This approach involves the induction of KCl crystal growth and the sacrifice of crystal templates, resulting in the formation of NF membranes with enhanced water permeability and pleasing mono-divalent salts selectivity. The molecular dynamics simulation and the observation of the membrane surface morphology revealed that the orderly grown KCl crystal templates successfully helped to form a regular acicular leaf-like structure on the membrane surface after the sacrificial treatment. As a result, polyamide-based NF membranes with a high permeable area were produced. The enhanced permeable area, diminished membrane thickness, and concentrated pore size distribution were identified as the key factors for the high permeability of 14.6 LMH/bar. And the mono-divalent salts separation coefficients (α(NaCl/Na 2 SO 4 )) of the membranes reached 97.8, which is outstanding compared to most currently reported polyamide-based NF membranes. The ultrahigh permselectivity NF membranes prepared by means of crystal template sacrifice are expected to provide a powerful aid for ion separation, desalination and drinking water treatment.

Zwitterions functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polyamide hybrid nanofiltration membranes for monovalent/divalent salts separation

Yao-Shen Guo,Yi-Fang Mi,Feng-Yang Zhao,Yan-Li Ji,Quan-Fu An,Cong-Jie Gao

N-aminoethyl piperazine propane sulfonate (AEPPS) modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (AEPPS-PD@MWCNTs) were prepared by co-deposition of dopamine and AEPPS on MWCNTs surfaces. AEPPS-PD@MWCNTs were mixed with piperazine aqueous solution and polymerized with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic chloride (TMC, dissolved in hexane solution) to prepare negatively charged NF membranes, which were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. It was found that compatibility between AEPPS-PD@MWCNTs and polyamide matrix was enhanced as a result of the multiple interactions between AEPPS-PD@MWCNTs and TMC monomers. At optimized conditions, pure water permeability of hybrid membrane was 127.3 L m −2  h −1  MPa −1 , 1.8 times as high as pristine PIP/TMC membrane without compromising Na 2 SO 4 rejection. Meanwhile, NaCl rejection of hybrid membrane was 19.0%, much lower than pristine PIP/TMC membrane. Hybrid membrane exhibited applications in separation of monovalent/divalent salts and monovalent salts/neutral organics coupled with good stability and better anti-fouling property which was sought for applications in the field of desalination, food and biological separation processes.

Fabrication of anti-fouling polyamide nanofiltration membrane by incorporating streptomycin as a novel co-monomer

Shujie Guo,Jiao Du,Fangzheng Yan,Zhi Wang,Jixiao Wang

Polyamide (PA) thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membrane has extremely broad application prospects in separation of monovalent/divalent inorganic salts mixed solution. However, membrane fouling is the main obstacle to the application of PA, TFC and NF membrane. Streptomycin (SM) is a hydrophilic antibiotic containing a large number of hydroxyl and amino groups. In this work, the NF membrane was prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP) between trimesoyl chloride (TMC) in the organic   phase   and SM/piperazine (PIP) mixture in the   aqueous   phase. The NF membrane structure and performance were characterized in detail. The results showed that SM successfully participated in the IP. The negative charge and hydrophilicity of membrane surface were improved. The prepared membrane exhibited good anti-adhesion and anti-bacterial performance. Additionally, when the SM concentration was 2%, the prepared membrane exhibited the optimal permselectivity. The water permeance was 89.4 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·MPa −1 . The rejection of NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 were 17.17% and 97.84%, respectively. The NaCl/Na 2 SO 4 separation factor of the SM2-PIP/TMC membrane in 1000 mg·L −1 NaCl and 1000 mg·L −1 Na 2 SO 4 mixed solution was 40, which was 3.3 times that of PIP/TMC membrane. It indicated that SM2-PIP/TMC demonstrated excellent monovalent/divalent salts separation performance. This work provided an easy and effective approach to preparing anti-fouling NF membrane while possessing superior monovalent/divalent salts separation performance.

Monovalent/Divalent salts separation via thin film nanocomposite nanofiltration membrane containing aminated TiO2 nanoparticles

Siyu Wei,Yingbo Chen,Xiaoyu Hu,Chunhao Wang,Xiujing Huang,Dongqing Liu,Yufeng Zhang

Nanofiltration is widely used in separation of ions with different sizes and charges. However, thin-film composite nanofiltration membrane is hard to reach satisfied selectivity for monovalent ions from divalent ions. In this study, polyamide thin film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofiltration membranes were prepared via interfacial polymerization of piperazine and trimesoyl chloride on a PES substrate by incorporation of aminated titanium dioxide (APTES-TiO 2 ). Surface morphology, roughness of the TFN membranes with varied concentration of aminated TiO 2 were tested by SEM, AFM and Zeta analysis. The results showed membrane containing 0.3(w/v%) amino-modified titanium dioxide with ion-selective properties had greatly improved pure water flux while the Na 2 SO 4 rejection keeps at a relative high level (>95%). For the separation of single salt solution, 0.3(w/v%) TFN has a higher rejection for sodium chloride (23.2%) and sodium sulfate (99.7%). For monovalent/divalent mixed salt solution has a separation factor of 477.89 in terms of chloride ion (Cl − ) and sulfate (SO 4 2− ) in the mixed solution with a salt concentration ratio of 1:19, which was higher than that of the conventional commercial NF membranes, such as Desal-DL, NF 270. This method provides the possibility of recovering concentrated brine and industrial separation of monovalent and divalent ions.

Synergistic emulsion effect-inspired design of starch nanoparticle-based nanofiltration membranes with nano-Turing structures for enhanced performance

Hanjing Xue,Houkang Pu,Xiaojuan Wang,Xinyan Wang,Weizheng Zhang,Huacheng Xu,Yijun Huang,Jiayan Xu,Congjie Gao,Xueli Gao

In this paper, inspired by the synergistic emulsion effect, nano-Turing structured nanofiltration (NF) membranes were prepared using negatively charged starch nanoparticles (SNP) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The SNP and SDS at the water–oil interface were utilized to influence the interfacial properties, and through the synergistic effect resulting from the strong electrostatic repulsion between the two, the organic phase was stably dispersed in the form of oil droplets on the water surface in a transient period. By constructing “ring-like” interfacial polymerization (IP) templates, a polyamide (PA) layer with coffee-ring structures on the surface was finally formed. This structure not only increased the effective filtration area for water molecules, but nanovoids underneath optimized the water transport path and enhanced water flux by suppressing the funnel effect. It was further found by adjusting the SNP content that NF membrane with 0.02 % SNP showed the lowest effective thickness of PA layer and the best wettability. Those factors together contributed to high water flux (29.97 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and good divalent salt rejection (98.88 %). Furthermore, it showed excellent ionic selectivity (162.6) for Cl − /SO 4 2− . This paper deeply explores the formation mechanism of coffee-ring structures by analyzing the water–oil 2D interface, and the discovery provides a new direction for the preparation of PA NF membrane surfaces with regular patterns.

A novel method of fabricating anti-biofouling nanofiltration membrane with almost no potential to induce antimicrobial resistance in bacteria

Ying Zhang,Xu Li,Zhi Wang,Jixiao Wang

The fabrication of anti-biofouling nanofiltration (NF) membrane is one of the effective methods to improve the vulnerability of membranes to bacteria in the feed solution. The prevalent approach to prepare anti-biofouling NF membranes is to graft biotoxic substances onto the NF membrane surface to kill the attached bacteria, inducing antimicrobial resistance in bacteria and water safety problem. In this study, non-biotoxic methyl 2-aminobenzoate (MA) was employed to prepare the anti-biofouling NF membranes. Instead of killing bacteria, the modified NF membrane could effectively prevent proliferation of bacteria on the membrane surface by blocking the quorum sensing in bacteria, thereby avoiding the generation of antimicrobial resistance. On the condition that the bacteria are alive, the biofilm formed by Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Bacillus subtilis ( B. subtilis ) on the modified NF membrane were significantly reduced by 94.5% and 65.1%, respectively. Additionally, the modified membrane showed superior anti-adhesion property for proteins and polysaccharides, attributing from the improved hydrophilicity of membrane surface. The optimally modified membrane exhibited the enhanced water permeability (from 6.72 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 to 12.12 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 ) and un-degraded divalent salt rejection (98.4% of Na 2 SO 4 ). This work provided an efficient and non-biotoxic approach for the fabrication of environmental friendly anti-biofouling NF membranes, which would eliminate the worries about the water safety and the development of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria.

Host-guest nanofiltration membranes having amino-complexed cucurbituril supramolecular channel for monovalent/divalent salts separation

Ying Wang,Song Zhao,Zhiyuan Zha,Zhi Wang,Jixiao Wang

Nanofiltration (NF) is widely used in separation of ions with different sizes and charges. However, thin-film composite NF membrane is hard to reach satisfied selectivity for monovalent/divalent salts separation. Herein, a novel host-guest NF membrane was designed and fabricated with cucurbituril-polyethyleneimine (CB-PEI) complex, which provided a “ring-like” supramolecular channel. The results indicated that CB-PEI/PSf membrane showed attractive separation performance for monovalent/divalent salts separation, purification and desalination of small molecule solutions. The as-prepared CB-PEI/PSf membrane exhibited superior pure water permeability up to 25.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , and salt rejections of 97.4%, 90.6%, 41.9% and 12.4% to MgSO 4 , Na 2 SO 4 , MgCl 2 and NaCl, respectively. The monovalent/divalent selectivelies for NaCl/MgSO 4 and NaCl/Na 2 SO 4 reached up to 30.0 and 8.9, respectively. Besides, the CB-PEI/PSf membrane exhibited very high separation factors for medicine/NaCl and dye/NaCl mixtures. Moreover, NF membrane processes were designed and operated for monovalent/divalent mixed salt separation by using CB-PEI/PSf membrane. The NaCl with mass fraction above 98% was successfully recovered after the single-stage membrane separation of NaCl/MgSO 4 mixture and the two-stage membrane separation of NaCl/Na 2 SO 4 mixture. Therefore, this novel host-guest NF membranes and process design provide a valuable basis for the industrial application of monovalent/divalent salts separation.

Porous organic cage supramolecular membrane showing superior monovalent/divalent salts separation

Ying Wang,Yue Yang,Zhiyuan Zha,Jixiao Wang,Zhi Wang,Song Zhao

Nanofiltration process has been perceived as one of the promising approaches in desalination and separation of monovalent/divalent salts. Despite significant progresses has been made in permeability and salt rejection, the industrial separation for monovalent/divalent salts is limited by the insufficient selectivity for ions with different charges and sizes. This work firstly proposed a porous organic cage supramolecular membrane with topologically structured “window-to-window” channels for the fast transport of monovalent ions and water molecules. Specifically, porous organic cage (RCC3) molecule and nonpolar alkyl of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) were assembled into supramolecular [email protected] through hydrophobic interaction by molecular recognition of polar cavity. Furthermore, terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) was employed as a crosslinker by interfacial polymerization to construct [email protected] supramolecular film onto the surface of polydopamine modified polysulfone (PSf) substrate. The results suggested that [email protected] membrane displayed a high permeability of 13.9 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 , and attractive performance for monovalent/divalent salts separation and small molecule solutions desalination. The salt rejections to Na 2 SO 4 , MgSO 4 , NaCl and MgCl 2 are 98.5%, 90.1%, 19.8% and 12.8%, and the selectivities of NaCl/Na 2 SO 4 and NaCl/MgSO 4 reached 42.6 and 7.8, respectively. Besides, the separation factors for NaCl/medicine and NaCl/dye mixtures are 95.5 of δ NaCl/DG and 76.6 of δ NaCl/CR , respectively. The excellent separation performance of [email protected] supramolecular membrane provides a new idea for developing high-efficiency membranes for monovalent/divalent salts separation.

Surface Modification of a Thin-Film Composite (TFC) Nanofiltration Membrane with 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) for Efficient Dye–Salt Separation

Jian Li,Pei Xiao,Jie Yu,Lei Li,Yiyun Zhang,Yun Ma,Fei Liu,Yi Li

Nanofiltration (NF) technology is attractive in desalting and concentrating dyeing wastewater in the textile industry. A highly efficient NF membrane is critical in reducing the cost of the process. Here, a facile and reliable approach to prepare an NF membrane for the selective separation of dye/salt is proposed by surface grafting of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) on a fresh polyamide (PA) layer after interfacial polymerization (IP). A thin layer of APTES with a thickness of ∼64 nm was found successfully covalently bonded onto the PA surface via esterification and amidation reactions. The thin-film composite (TFC)-1.0 membrane grafted with 10% APTES achieved a high water permeance of 44.8 L m–2 h–1 bar–1, which was 4.7 times higher than that of the control TFC membrane. Interestingly, the rejection of monovalent salt (NaCl, 11.5%) and divalent salt (Na2SO4, 17.2%) decreased significantly, while the rejection for different dyes (Congo red, reactive blue-19, Coomassie blue G-250, and methyl blue) remained over 99.0%. These noticeable changes in separation performances could be attributed to the large pore size of the active layer, resulting from the interference of APTES on the post-cross-linking of a PA network. The poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) filtration experiments confirmed that the mean pore size of the membrane was enlarged significantly from 0.51 to 1.17 nm after surface modification. Finally, the modified membrane showed good long-term stability and excellent separation efficiencies in fractionation of a high salinity Congo red/NaCl (0.2/50 g L–1) mixture. Overall, this work provides a practical strategy to prepare a permeable and selective NF membrane for dye and salt separation by surface grafting of the nascent PA layer.

Mix-Charged Nanofiltration Membrane for Efficient Organic Removal from High-Salinity Wastewater: The Role of Charge Spatial Distribution

Yuling Ren,Pengfei Qi,Yujie Han,Yinhua Wan,Jiuyang Lin,Ming Xie,Xiangrong Chen,Shichao Feng,Jianquan Luo

The efficient removal of organic contaminants from high-salinity wastewater is crucial for resource recovery and achieving zero discharge. Nanofiltration (NF) membranes are effective in separating organic compounds and monovalent salts, but they typically exhibit an excessive rejection of divalent salts. Modifying the charge characteristics of NF membranes can improve salt permeation; however, the role of charge spatial distribution in governing salt transport behavior is not fully understood. In this study, we developed a mix-charged NF membrane with a horizontal charge distribution by employing interfacial polymerization combined with a polyester template etching and solvent-induced polyamine intercalation strategy. The ratio of positive to negative charge domains in the membrane can be precisely controlled by adjusting the aqueous monomer ratio and polyamine modifier type. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth profiling and separation layer thickness analysis confirmed the complete penetration of polyamines into the separation layer, providing direct evidence of the formation of horizontally distributed charge domains. This unique charge distribution results in a high charge density and a near-electroneutral surface, which facilitates the permeation of the divalent salts. The size-dependent “plug-in” modification and covalent cross-linking further reduce pore size, enhancing rejection of small organic molecules. Additionally, the membrane demonstrated exceptional antifouling performance against both negatively and positively charged pollutants, attributed to its unique charge distribution and smooth surface. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations further revealed that weak electrostatic interactions and a tightly bound hydration layer contribute to the membrane’s superior antifouling properties. This work provides valuable insights into the design of NF membranes with tailored microstructures and charge distributions for improved water treatment performance.
