Binary-Cooperative Ultrathin Porous Membrane for Gas Separation

Bo Wang,Wen-tai Zhao,Xiao Xu,Chen Zhang,Shuai-ying Ding,Yue Zhang,Tie Wang

The construction of ultrathin porous membranes with stable structures is critical for achieving efficient gas separation. Inspired by the binary-cooperative structural features of bones and teeth—composed of rigid hydroxyapatite and flexible collagen, which confer excellent mechanical strength—a binary-cooperative porous membrane constructed with gel-state zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (g-ZIFs), synthesized using a metal-gel-induced strategy, is proposed. The enlarged cavity size and flexible frameworks of the g-ZIF nanoparticles significantly improve gas adsorption and diffusion, respectively. After thermal treatment, the coordination structures forming rigid segments in the g-ZIF membranes appear at the stacked g-ZIF boundaries, exhibiting a higher Young's modulus than the g-ZIF nanoparticles, denoted as the flexible segments. The g-ZIF membranes demonstrate excellent tensile and compression resistances, attributed to the effective translation of binary-cooperative effects of rigidity and flexibility into the membranes. The resulting dual-aperture structure, composed of g-ZIF nanoparticles surrounded by nanoscale apertures at the boundaries, yields a membrane with a stable CO 2 permeance of 4834 GPU and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 90 within 3.0 MPa.

A monolithic hydro/organo macro copolymer actuator synthesized via interfacial copolymerization

Zhang Feilong,Fan Junbing,Zhang Pengchao,Liu Mingjie,Meng Jingxin,Jiang Lei,Wang Shutao

Synthetic polymer actuators have attracted increasing attention for their potential applications in artificial muscles, soft robotics and sensors. The majority of previous efforts have focused on smart hydrogels with bilayer structures that can change their shape in response to environmental stimuli, such as temperature, light and certain chemicals. However, the practical application of hydrogels is limited because of their low modulus and weak mechanical strength. Here we synthesized a robust monolithic actuator of a macro-scale hydro/organo binary cooperative Janus copolymer film. The process involves direct, one-step interfacial polymerization of immiscible hydrophilic and hydrophobic vinyl monomer solutions, and the resultant product exhibited binary cooperative shape transformation to multiple external stimuli. The Janus copolymer film can work in both aqueous solutions and organic solvents, with bidirectional and site-specific bending arising from cooperative asymmetric swelling/shrinking of the hydrogel and organogel networks. In addition, the as-prepared Janus copolymer film can act as a sensor element for solvent leakage detection. This binary cooperative strategy is applicable to most immiscible monomer systems and provides a general approach to developing novel functional copolymer materials.

LM-Gel Plasticine Based on Binary Cooperative with Kneadable Shaping and Conductivity

Xingchao Li,Kai Hou,Yue Long,Kai Song

Liquid metal (LM)-based polymers have received growing interest for wearable health monitoring, electronic skins, and soft robotics. However, fabricating multifunctional LM-based polymers, in particular, featuring a convenient shaping ability while offering excellent deformability and conductivity remains a challenge. To overcome this obstacle, here, we propose a strategy to prepare LM-Gel “plasticine” (LGP) with great deformability, which is composed of a PVA (poly(vinyl alcohol)) soft network and an LM conductive phase. LGP can be easily constructed into different shapes such as plasticine and can be applied to different conditions (such as building a 3D circuit, circuit repair, and switch). Meanwhile, LGP has great conductivity (2.3 × 104 S/m) after surface annealing. Besides, LGP has a good electric heating performance, which shows the potential for application in wearable heating devices. Thus, this approach not only provides a way to prepare LM-polymer plasticine but also provides a novel perspective toward extending the applied range of LM-polymer composites.

“Star” miR-34a and CXCR4 antagonist based nanoplex for binary cooperative migration treatment against metastatic breast cancer

Xue Yang,Fang Gao,Wenan Zhang,Huipeng Li,Xinzhi Huang,Jiajia Wei,Jiayi Bian,Ying Yang,Chenggen Qian,Minjie Sun

Invasion and metastasis of tumor cells is one of the major obstacles in cancer therapy. The process of tumor metastasis and diffusion is coordinated by multiple pathways associated with chemokine signals and migration microenvironment. In our previous work, chemokine CXC receptor 4 (CXCR4) antagonists showed significant anti-metastatic effects by blocking the CXCR4/stromal cell-derived factor-1(SDF-1) axis in pancreatic cancer and breast cancer. Here, we proposed to achieve migration chain-treatment for metastatic tumors by introducing a cell adhesion molecules CD44 inhibitor (Star miR-34a) to deprive of cell migration capability on the basis of CXCR4 antagonism (cyclam monomer , CM). Dextrin modified 1.8 k PEI with CM-end was prepared to deliver therapeutic miR-34a (named DPC/miR-34a) for efficient anti-metastasis by downregulating adhesion protein CD44 and targeting the CXCR4/SDF-1 axis. Additionally, reduced expression of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl2 caused by miR-34a could enhance the anti-tumor efficacy of DPC/miR-34a nanoplex administration. Compared with inhibition of the CXCR4/SDF-1 axis or CD44 expression, the multidimensional therapy (DPC/miR-34a) exhibited considerable suppression of cancer cell invasion as assessed by an in vitro cell invasion assay and in vivo anti-metastasis model. Moreover, DPC/miR-34a demonstrated a superior antitumor and anti-metastatic efficacy both in lung metastatic model and orthotopic MDA-MB-231 tumor models, thus providing an efficient approach for combating metastatic tumors.
