Enrofloxacin-loaded docosanoic acid solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) with different physicochemical properties were developed to enhance activity against intracellular Salmonella . Their cellular uptake, intracellular elimination and antibacterial activity were studied in RAW 264.7 cells. During the experimental period, SLN-encapsulated enrofloxacin accumulated in the cells approximately 27.06–37.71 times more efficiently than free drugs at the same extracellular concentration. After incubation for 0.5 h, the intracellular enrofloxacin was enhanced from 0.336 to 1.147 μg/mg of protein as the sizes of nanoparticles were increased from 150 to 605 nm, and from 0.960 to 1.147 μg/mg of protein when the charge was improved from −8.1 to −24.9 mv. The cellular uptake was more significantly influenced by the size than it was by the charge, and was not affected by whether the charge was positive or negative. The elimination of optimal SLN-encapsulated enrofloxacin from the cells was significantly slower than that of free enrofloxacin after removing extracellular drug. The inhibition effect against intracellular Salmonella CVCC541 of 0.24 and 0.06 μg/mL encapsulated enrofloxacin was stronger than 0.6 μg/mL free drug after all of the incubation periods and at 48 h, respectively. Docosanoic acid SLNs are thus considered as a promising carrier for intracellular bacterial treatment.

Rare earth (RE)-exchanged zeolite Y is the major active component of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts. Herein, a series of yttrium (Y 3+ )-exchanged zeolites Y was prepared by the ion-exchange method, and the location of Y 3+ ions in the Y 3+ -exchange zeolite NaY was determined by fitting synchrotron radiation X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) pattern combined with the infrared spectra in the hydroxyl stretching region. In analogy to lanthanum (La 3+ )-exchanged zeolite Y, Y 3+ ions were preferentially located inside the sodalite units near the double six-membered rings (D6R's), octahedrally coordinating to three framework oxygens and to three H 2 O molecules (or OH groups) in close proximity. The substitution of Y 3+ ions for counter-ions Na + caused a noticeable shrinkage of the unit cell due mainly to the relatively small ionic radius and high charge density of Y 3+ ions. As a consequence, the Y 3+ -exchanged HY-based FCC catalyst exhibited improved steam stability, and higher selectivity for high-value products (liquefied petroleum gas and C 5 +gasoline) in n-docosane cracking compared with the La 3+ -exchanged HY-based catalyst.

Contamination and waste heat are major issues in water pollution. Aiming at efficient synchronous recovery wastewater and waste heat, we designed a novel CaCO 3 -based phase-change microcapsule system with an n -docosane core and a CaCO 3 /Fe 3 O 4 composite shell. The system was fabricated through an emulsion-templated in situ precipitation approach in a structure-directing mode, resulting in a controllable morphology for the resultant microcapsules, varying from a peanut hull through ellipsoid to dumbbell shapes. The system has a significantly enlarged specific surface area of approximately 55 m 2 ·g −1 with the CaCO 3 phase transition from vaterite to calcite. As a result, the microcapsule system exhibits improved adsorption capacities of 497.6 and 79.1 mg/g for Pb 2+ and Rhodamine B removal, respectively, from wastewater. Moreover, increase in the specific surface area of the microcapsule system with a sufficient latent heat capacity of approximately 130 J·g −1 also resulted in an enhanced heat energy-storage capability and thermal conductance for waste-heat recovery. The microcapsule system also exhibits a good leakage-prevention capability and good multicycle reusability owing to the tight magnetic CaCO 3 /Fe 3 O 4 composite shell. This study provides a promising approach for developing CaCO 3 -based phase-change microcapsules with enhanced thermal energy storage and adsorption capabilities for efficient synchronous recovery of wastewater and waste heat.

The present research investigates the chemical profile of secondary metabolites produced by Bacillus paramycoides BOK01 and Microbacterium barkeri BPATH02 rhizospheric bacteria originating from the tea rhizosphere and their antifungal activity against major tea pathogens. GC–MS analysis revealed that dimethyl sulphate (77.09%) was a major compound (Compound I ) of B. paramycoides BOK01 and 1H-Purin-6-amine, [(2-fluorophenyl) methyl- (CAS) (Compound II; 16.88%), and docosane (Compound III; 11.75%) as putative major compounds in M. barkeri BPATH02. Furthermore, the ethyl acetate extract of both bacterial antagonists and compounds I, II , and III were evaluated for their efficacy against major tea pathogens, namely Exobasidium vexans , Pseudopestalotiopsis theae, and Fusarium concentricum causing respective blister blight, gray blight, and Fusarium dieback in tea crops using two-sealed-base-plate method. Laboratory screening of ethyl acetate (EA) extracts of both bacterial antagonists at 200 µg/mL provided a 65.95 to 82.5% range of growth inhibition of tested pathogens. At similar dose, compounds I, II, and III provided 70.88 to 77.53%, 67.7 to 78.0% and 71.8 to 73.07% range of growth inhibition of tested pathogens, respectively. Thus, this study shows that bacterial metabolites and their compounds are sources of putative antifungal agents, which can be harnessed for bio-fungicides development against tea diseases.

Human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) attacks the immune system, making people susceptible to various diseases, thus increasing their risk of death. Comprehensive detection of major HIV-1 strains circulating in China is vital for effective HIV-1 infection prevention and treatment. HIV-1 nucleic acid detection is considered effective for HIV-1 diagnosis since traditional immunological testing may fail to detect HIV-1 infection during the window period. This work demonstrates a one-pot two-stage amplification assay (RT-RAP), a combination of reverse transcription recombinase (RT- RAA), and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The turn-around time of the assay is only 50 min and can be performed with commonly available laboratory equipment, the qPCR devices. The RT-RAP assay could detect approximately 5 and 14 copies/reaction of HIV-1 DNA and RNA using recombinant plasmids and standard reference strains, respectively. Additionally, we found that the clinical performance of RT-RAP (detected 169 samples out of 170 specimens) was consistent with that of qRT-PCR. The sensitivity and specificity of RT-RAP were 100.00% (99/99) and 98.59% (70/71), respectively, while its positive and negative predictive values were 99.00% (99/100) and 100.00% (70/70), respectively. The total coincidence rate of the RT-RAP was 99.41% (169/170), with a kappa value of 0.988 (p< 0.05). We demonstrated that RT-RAP could rapidly detect the common HIV-1 subtypes commonly circulating in China with comparable sensitivity and specificity to qRT-PCR.Keywords:HIV-1;RT-RAA;qRT-PCR;clinical detection

The medical dressings with temperature regulating function can promote wound recovery and cure chronic diseases. To address the outdoor heat source of thermal compress film, Kevlar nanofibrous film (AKD) containing n-Docosane (DE) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) with active photo-thermal conversion and thermal energy storage properties was developed. The results shown that DE and AgNWs were wrapped in Kevlar nanosheets through entanglement and extensive hydrogen-bonding interaction, and AKD film presented the layered structure. Due to the formation of non-melting layer, the melting latent heat of AKD film containing 58 wt% of DE without leakage is 105.1 J·g −1 . The as-prepared film also presents enviable photothermal conversion efficiency of 88.5 %, impressive tensile strength of 26.15 MPa and high flexibility even at temperatures below the melting point of DE. Moreover, the pilot-scale film with the thickness of 1.54 mm can rapidly rise to 50 °C in 402 s and maintain the temperature from 50 °C to 37 °C for about 18 min. The excellent heat storage capacity, impressive mechanical and flexible properties, rapid photo-thermal response and stable heat release performance make it promising to be used as thermal compress therapy.

To promote the high-value utilization of lignin, a novel, all lignin-based chemically crosslinked sponge (CCL) was prepared and used to encapsulate phase change materials (PCMs) to solve problems associated with PCM leakage in practical application. In a straightforward, one step vacuum impregnation method, myristyl alcohol (MA), n-docosane (C22), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) phase change materials were encapsulated in the CCL sponges that were used as supporting material to prepare CCLPCMs, which were named as MA/CCL, C22/CCL, and PEG/CCL, respectively. Benefiting from the strong capillary action provided by the unique 3D continuous porous structure of the CCL, the mass loading of PCMs in the corresponding CCLPCMs are reached up to 93.1 ± 1.5 %, 90.2 ± 1.2 %, and 91.2 ± 0.6 %, respectively. It is also worth noting that η values of the corresponding CCLPCMs reached 99.4 ± 0.9 %, 100.9 ± 1.0 %, and 99.7 ± 1.0 %. The CCLPCMs showed excellent encapsulation capabilities, thermal reliability after 300 heating and cooling cycles and high solar-to-heat conversion capability over 30 cycles. These results provide a fresh, green, sustainable, and promising strategy to promote high-value utilization of lignin and design shape stability PCMs for heat energy storage.

In this paper, a new type of microencapsulated phase change materials (MPCMs) with docosane as the core and titanium dioxide (TiO2) as the shell was prepared by in situ polymerization. Its phase transition temperature was approximately 40 °C, and it can be used as a phase change material (PCM) in a low-temperature solar heat collection system. The properties of the new material were examined including the microstructure, the chemical elements on the surface of the microcapsules, and thermal conductivity. In addition, to obtain the optimized formula of the microcapsules, single-factor analysis on the emulsifier type, its mass fraction, ultrasonic oscillation time, pH, and core–shell ratio were performed. The results showed that the MPCMs prepared in this paper had a particle size of 2–5 μm and were spherical. Its surface was uniform and smooth without cracks, and the TiO2was well dispersed around the docosane, completely coating the docosane without impurities. The MPCMs had good performance in terms of thermal properties and heat storage when using 0.40% SDS as an emulsifier, 10 min ultrasonic, a 3.5 pH value, and a 1:1 core–shell ratio. However, the stirring method, time, and experimental reaction temperature also affected the properties of the material, which was not studied in this experiment. We will continue to study these factors in the future. Keywords:microencapsulated phase change material;core–shell ratio;nanoparticles;thermal property

To meet the requirement of multipurpose applications in infrared thermal camouflage and solar photothermal energy storage, we have developed a series of multifunctional composite films based on polyurethane (PU) as a flexible matrix and double-layered phase-change microcapsules as an additive. The double-layered microcapsules were first constructed by encapsulating n -docosane as a phase-change material in a titanium dioxide shell, followed by depositing a polyaniline (PANi) functional layer. Then, the microcapsules were incorporated into the PU matrix to form the composite films through in situ polycondensation . A high latent heat capacity of over 130 J g −1 was achieved by the microcapsules as a result of a high n -docosane loading. This can generate an effective thermal buffer for the composite films and thus endow them with a good thermal camouflage capability. The composite films also show good solar energy-storage performance thanks to their superior sunlight absorptivity derived from the PANi coating layer of the microcapsules. The composite films present a much higher surface temperature (68.6 °C) than pure PU film (41.9 °C) under simulated sunlight irradiation for 1488 s. In addition, the composite films exhibit a self-cleaning surface and high flexibility. Integrating the double-layered microcapsules and flexible PU matrix may provide an innovative strategy for developing flexible functional films for infrared thermal camouflage and photothermal energy storage applications .

Stem cell therapies are increasingly recognized as the future direction of regenerative medicine, but the biological fate of the administrated stem cells remains a major concern for clinical translation, which calls for an approach to efficiently monitoring the stem cell behaviors in vivo. Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is an emerging technology for cell tracking; however, its utility has been largely restricted due to the lack of optimal magnetic nanoparticle tracers. Herein, by controlled engineering of the size and shape of magnetic nanoparticles tailored to MPI physics theory, a specialized MPI tracer, based on cubic iron oxide nanoparticles with an edge length of 22 nm (CIONs-22), is developed. Due to the inherent lower proportion of disordered surface spins, CIONs-22 exhibit significantly larger saturation magnetization than that of spherical ones, while they possess similar saturation magnetization but smaller coercivity compared to larger-sized CIONs. These magnetic properties of CIONs-22 warrant high sensitivity and resolution of MPI. With their efficient cellular uptake, CIONs-22 exhibit superior MPI performance for stem cell labeling and tracking compared to the commercialized tracer Vivotrax. By virtue of these advantages, CIONs-22 enable real-time and prolonged monitoring of the spatiotemporal trajectory of stem cells transplanted to hindlimb ischemia mice, which demonstrates the great potential of CIONs-22 as MPI tracers to advance stem cell therapies.

Confinement effect of nanopores on phase transition of docosane ( n -C 22 H 46 , C 22 ) is studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature-dependent powdered X-ray diffractions (XRD). The bulk C 22 has a stable rotator phase R I and R II . In the pores of CPGs, SBA-15, C-SBA-15, KIT-6, and MCM-41, the transition temperatures of solid–solid ( T s ) and solid–liquid ( T m ) transitions of C 22 are depressed. The depression of the transition points (Δ T s , Δ T m ) has a linear relation with the reverse diameter. However, the Δ T m values seemingly show weak relation with the polarity of the pore walls but to vary with the pore dimensionality. According to XRD analysis, C 22 confined in CPG (11.5 nm) and SBA-15 (14.4 nm) present low temperature phase and rotator phase as the bulk, but the lamellar packing of molecules is heavily disturbed in the small pores.

Homeostatic microfiber leathers with temperature self-regulation promise broad applications, ranging from the apparel and automotive interior industries to the home furnishing and healthcare industries. Temperature self-regulation is achieved by phase-change materials containing microcapsules introduced within the leathers. The introduction of phase change microcapsules (PCMs) into microfiber leather faces two formidable challenges: (1) the shell of microcapsules must remain chemically stable against alkalis and organic solvents; (2) PCMs possess the ability to reduce supercooling during which latent heat is released, allowing for the precise and controllable release of latent heat. Here we present a high-performance homeostatic microfiber-composed synthetic leather containing PCMs that can address these two challenges, which not only demonstrate exceptional chemical robustness under alkaline conditions but also offer efficient and precise control over temperature fluctuation and latent heat release by reducing supercooling. Titanium carbide (TiC) known for its high thermal conductivity and alkali resistance has been selected as the shell material for the microcapsules, which can effectively resolve chemical stability issues. Meanwhile, the high thermal conductivity of TiC can be leveraged to enhance heterogeneous nucleation, thus narrowing the temperature range for latent heat release. The resultant microfiber leather shows outstanding capabilities for adjustable thermal energy storage. Our studies offer an effective approach to create homeostatic microfiber-composed synthetic leathers with chemical robustness and undercooling self-regulation, which would be useful in the fields of the textile, biomedical, and healthcare industries.
