Diuron is a urea herbicide that is frequently detected in surface water, groundwater, and marine waters. However, there are few methods or guidelines reported on ensuring the quality of sugarcane and soil. In this study, a method was developed for detecting diuron to ensure the quality and safety of food and sugar. Mass spectrometry was used to identify 3,4-dichloroaniline as a marker for the thermal decomposition of diuron, and thus, as a representative component for quantitative diuron analysis. This approach can be used to rapidly detect trace amounts of diuron. In addition, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and carbon nanotube column purification were used in conjunction with gas chromatography–electron capture detection to detect diuron. The method was then evaluated for its accuracy, detection limit, and viability. The effects of extraction solvent, ultrasound time, and ultrasound power on the extraction efficiency of the analyte from sugarcane and soil were also investigated. The efficiency and optimum conditions of UAE were examined through single-factor experiments and Box–Behnken design (BBD). The optimal extraction conditions were identified as follows: acetonitrile as the extraction solvent, extraction temperature of 27 °C, extraction time of 3.4 min, and ultrasound power of 70 W. Under these conditions, high linearity was achieved for diuron concentrations of 0.01 to 5.0 mg/L, and the purification correlation coefficient was consistently greater than 0.998. Hence, gas chromatography, combined with UAE and BBD, offers superior efficiency extraction, which is sufficiently accurate and precise for pesticide residue analysis. Practical Application We developed an accurate and cost-effective method for detecting diuron (a commonly used herbicide) in soil and sugar samples. We performed experiments to determine the optimum detection conditions for our method. This method can be used for online monitoring of sugar manufacturing processes to ensure food safety and quality.

Coal is the primary energy and consumption accounts for a higher proportion of fossil fuels, but its combustion product (fly ash) is a hazardous industrial solid waste (ISW). To alleviate its environmental problem and reuse waste, an appropriate disposal method for fly ash was proposed, which is using fly ash to construct the ceramsite as a catalyst carrier. To improve the catalysis property of the composite, layer double oxides (LDO) was doped into the lightweight ceramsite (CoFe-LDO/FAC) with dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBDP) catalysis activity. In addition, following the mindset of a “waste-to-waste” strategy, apply the composite ceramsite enhancing the diuron-containing (DUR) water purification in a DBDP self-Fenton-like system, creatively using one stone kills two birds. The porous structure endows the CoFe-LDO/FAC possessed water adsorption ability, assisting oxidants and contaminants diffusion with water inside CoFe-LDO/FAC. More than 95 % of DUR could be removed within 10 min, and the DBDP + CoFe-LDO/FAC performed the properties of stability as evidenced by low metal ion leaching in the eight times recycle. During the catalysis process, CoFe-LDO/FAC promotes the dominant reactive species ( 1 O 2 and • OH) yield by the valence cycle of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Co 2+ /Co 3+ in DUR decomposition. Abundant oxygen vacancy remedies the electron consumption and maintains the surface charge balance. This work provides a novel application of fly ash and LDO in water treatment and is helpful in ISW disposal.

The herbicide diuron is hardly soluble in water and most organic solvents and is usually made into a wettable powder or mixed with soil when used, which causes environmental risk and a reduction in herbicidal efficacy. In this study, the physicochemical properties were changed by usingβ-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to encapsulate diuron to form an inclusion complex. Some key technologies, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), were used to characterize the inclusion complex. The stoichiometry of the inclusion complex was determined by recording the1H NMR spectrum or by using a diagram of inclusion ratios. A phase solubility study proved that the formed inclusion complex exhibited higher water solubility. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that the formed inclusion complex exhibited better thermal stability. Biological activity studies indicated that the herbicidal activity, in terms of herbicide removal, of the formed inclusion complex was higher than that of the original diuron. In general, the formation of the inclusion complex could reduce the environmental damage caused by diuron and enhance its herbicidal activity, providing an environmentally friendly method for using diuron.

Diuron, a persistent organic herbicide, was effectively degraded by the solar/chlorine process in this study. The solar/chlorine process could not only produce HO˙ (hydroxyl radicals) and reactive chlorine species (RCS), but also O3. They are the major contributors to diuron degradation at different solution pH values (6–8). Natural organic matter (NOM), NO2− and a high dosage of Cl−, NO3−, and HCO3− could inhibit the efficiency of diuron degradation. Moreover, a possible degradation pathway of diuron was proposed, which gives detailed reactions in the solar/chlorine process. The co-existence of NO2− in diuron degradation has risks of producing N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). Finally, the ecotoxicity of diuron and its oxidation byproducts was reduced overall according to the calculated results from the Ecological Structure Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) program. But the toxicity of the products is still very high. For that, the solar/chlorine process should be of concern when it is used for diuron degradation.
