Functional coatings with breathability, moisture permeability and antibacterial properties are extremely popular in textile applications. The secondary reactions of the surface coating are greatly important and have attracted attention since they can make the coating a multifunctional platform by customizing the surface characteristics. However, common coatings such as polydopamine are restricted in textile fuctionalization due to their undesired color. In this study, we developed an amyloid-like natural protein coating on wool textile based on the phase-transited assembly of lysozyme. It is found that this coating significantly improve the hydrophilicity and moisture permeability of wool fabrics, which can withstand 50 washing cycles and 100 friction losses. The coated fabric maintained antibacterial properties for a long time in a humid environment after soaked in simulated sweat. At the same time, we used phase-transited lysozyme (PTL) as the secondary reaction platform to generate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in-situ, which endows the fabric with excellent antibacterial properties. Interestingly, the finished fabric still maintains an excellent antibacterial rate after 50 washing cycles. This work shows that the secondary reactivity of the PTL assembly coating provides a facile and adaptable platform which is promising to realize diverse functionalization of textiles. It has overcome the color problem of commonly-used bionic coatings, thus providing new insights for the surface modification of other natural or synthetic fibers.

The development of multifunctional, stable, and secondarily reactive surface coatings is highly desirable, regardless of the surface structure and chemistry of the textile. However, it has remained a great challenge until now. Commonly used strategies for textile surface functionalization are limited to certain types of fibers or weak and unreliable surface bonds, as well as colored surfaces. Herein, a supramolecular assembly strategy involving phase-transited lysozyme (PTL) and tannic acid (TA) is proposed, which can be used to functionalize various textiles through simple padding and drying. This coating has been shown to withstand 50 washing cycles and 100 rubbing cycles. The PTL/TA coating not only effectively improves the antibacterial properties of textiles (with a 99% bacteriostatic rate), but also enhances UV resistance and antioxidant properties. Additionally, the PTL/TA coating can serve as a secondary reaction platform to prepare X-PTL/TA@fabrics with various functionalities. For instance, sol-gel functional finishing can be employed to achieve hydrophobic modification of fabrics. Furthermore, electroless deposition of Cu on the coating surface can impart infrared stealth and electromagnetic shielding properties to the fabric. PTL/TA coatings exhibit promising practical application prospects as a bridge between various textiles and multifunctionality.

The pyrolysis kinetics of herb residues with potassium and iron addition were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and a four-logistic distribution activation energy model (4LG-DAEM). The model included hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin, and a pseudo-component for coke. Kinetic compensation effects and n -order mechanism functions were incorporated to better fit the catalytic pyrolysis process. Compared with conventional models, the 4LG-DAEM captured the TG curve characteristics more accurately, with R 2 values above 0.995. Fitted parameter analysis showed that potassium addition significantly reduced the activation energies of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and biochar reactions, but narrowed the reaction temperature ranges. Iron addition had a smaller effect on activation energies but widened the reaction temperature range. The combination of potassium and iron had a synergistic effect, enhancing the secondary reactions of hemicellulose, cellulose, and coke more effectively than single catalysts. Potassium–iron composite catalysts notably increased the proportion of biochar secondary reactions in the total process. Additionally, the 4LG-DAEM model demonstrated strong predictive ability for the kinetics of potassium–iron catalyzed pyrolysis of various biomasses.

A novel polymerization route to synthesize monomodal high solid content latexes of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) with low viscosity based on pressure drop was designed. This route consists of a semi-continuous polymerization step (step I) and a pressure drop step (step II). An investigation of the effect of pressure drop on the polymerization showed that pressure drop led to a secondary reaction. Secondary nucleation of a large number of particles followed by limited flocculation was caused by the pressure drop, which further led to an optimization of the particle size distribution (PSD) of latex. The effect of pressure drop on formation and growth of new particles was investigated and a possible mechanism was inferred. Latex with solid content of 70.1 wt% and a viscosity of 640 mPa s at a constant shear rate of 20 s−1 was obtained through this method.

The purpose of this study was to reveal the structural evolution of cellulose-derived tars in the biomass/coal co-gasification environment. A two-stage reactor was employed, where the pyrolytic vapors of cellulose were produced in the top stage and the secondary reactions of these vapors took place in the bottom stage under a range of conditions. The roles of anthracite char and steam were examined by implementing three operational modes in the bottom stage: thermal cracking (TC), catalytic cracking (CC), and catalytic reforming (CR), over a temperature range from 600 to 900 °C. Anthracite char was effective in enhancing tar reduction at lower temperatures (≤700 °C), above which its effect diminished. Tar yields under the CC and CR modes were comparable in the studied temperature range, suggesting the minimum effects of steam on the tar amount. However, gel permeation chromatography coupled with a diode array detector (GPC–DAD) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) characterization of tars showed that both anthracite char and steam had significant influence on the composition of tar, in terms of the molecular weight distribution and aromatic cluster sizes. Specifically, at a high temperature (900 °C), the presence of anthracite char facilitated the reduction of aromatic compounds, especially those with larger aromatic ring systems (≥3 fused benzene rings). In addition, the used anthracite chars showed lowered specific surface areas, which was postulated to be the main reason for their slightly reduced gasification reactivity.
