In this work, a novel strategy for Fenton activity improvement of Cu2X was reported, in which the local electron density of Cu sites was regulated via manipulation of simple chalcogen elements (O, S, and Se). Among them, Cu2Se catalysts show excellent catalytic activity to activate H2O2 for the complete removal of ofloxacin (10 mg/L) at an initial pH of 6.5 within 120 min. Radical scavenger experiments and electron spin resonance spectroscopy confirm that •OH radicals are the primary oxygen reactive species to drive ofloxacin degradation. In addition, density functional theory calculations further proved that electrons would migrate from X and accumulate on Cu active sites in the order Se > S > O. Compared with Cu2O and Cu2S, the highly concentrated electron density of Cu atoms in Cu2Se not only decreased the activation energy of the Fenton-like reaction but also boosted the Cu2+/Cu+ cycle with the generation of more •OH radicals (18–66 μm) and the maintenance of high stability of catalysts, leading to excellent catalytic activity and application potential. We believe this work will lay the foundation for designing excellent Fenton catalysts for practical applications since developing a heterogeneous Fenton system with the highest oxidation efficiency has always been the long-term goal in this field.
Supercapacitor is one of well-known energy-storage devices. However, the electrode materials still restrict its performance and reduce its practical value due to low capacitance or high cost. Therefore, it is of vital importance to pursue the cheap electrode materials with high performance for the next generation supercapacitor. Herein, a series of bimetal sulfide MnS/Cu 2 S/C composite materials were synthesized by hydrothermal reaction and the subsequent calcination with expired manganese gluconate and copper gluconate as the starting materials. Moreover, the effect of Cu 2 S's content on the microstructure and capacitance of MnS/Cu 2 S/C bimetal sulfides was further investigated. All the composites showed the well-organized morphology of about 3 nm metal sulfide nanoparticles embedded in the carbon microspheres with a diameter of about 6 μm. When the feeding ratio was 2:1, the reversible specific capacitances of 2MnS/Cu 2 S/C (MCS-2) in the three-electrode and two-electrode systems were as high as 1206 F/g and 116 F/g at 1.0 A/g, respectively, higher than those of other samples. The synergistic effect of the bimetal sulfides and the joint contributions of high conductivity and low capacitance of Cu 2 S may be responsible for the desirable high supercapacitance. Additionally, the successful conversion of expired gluconates to the useful electrode materials in this work highlighted the ecological benefits and the positive effect on the environmental protection and the resource conservation.
Digenite Cu1.8S and covellite CuS nanoparticles can both be obtained through the hot-injection synthetic process by controlling the synthesis temperature and time. Compared with digenite Cu1.8S, covellite CuS attracts more attention due to the extraordinary LSPR effect. However, digenite Cu1.8S is thermally more stable and suitable for applications at elevated temperature. In this work, LSPR was found to be induced by incorporation of manganese (Mn) into originally weakly absorbing digenite Cu1.8S nanoparticles. In addition, it was observed that the intensity of the LSPR effect could be controlled by tuning the manganese content in the new Mn-incorporated digenite Cu1.8S (CuxMnyS) nanoparticles.
